Smith signs with 49ers
Determined not to let him leave town Friday without a signed contract, the San Francisco 49ers made good on their pledge and signed former Bengals defensive end Justin Smith to a six-year, $45 million contract that includes $20 million in guaranteed money, ESPN.com reported this morning.
Minnesota was interested in Smith, the fourth overall pick of the 2001 draft by the Bengals.

Same old Bengals. Many other teams in the NFL being proactive, and targeting players, and signing players. The Bengals screw up a trade and do not "schedule" visits only for other teams to be much more aggressive sweep in and grab the player. Tell me if we have heard this story before. JOKE, JOKE, JOKE.
I agree totally about the joke-joke-joke. The brown family could mess up anything. I don't understand what these folks think we fans are supposed to bear while watching their antics (oh, by the way, ticket price increase). They remind me of aristocrats with the Bengals football team as a hobby. They've got Marvin Lewis seeing things their way (look out). Heck, they even brought in Carson Palmers brother. Is Carson's brother supposed to make us feel warm and fuzzy? Before long they'll have Carson onboard with their thinking as well. If we see Carson and his brother in wing tip shoes, a $250.00 suit and driving a buick to the Wal-Mart to do some shopping we'll know the metamorphosis is complete. Nothing like an NFL philanthropist owner(wrong sport/business for philanthropy). Oh well, you know what they say, "winning isn't everything". Oh by the way, ticket price increase.
Justin Smith, imho, is not worth that kind of money! I'd much rather take a couple of draft guys vs that kind of dough.
Let him go - I have no problem losing his 2 sacks from last year.
Then please, go dind another team. Don't spend your time here if you don't like the Bengals and hat they do. Look, they don't always make decision I like either, but they're the team I root for, so I hope they work out, but complaining is just useless.
I think letting Justin go was a good decision. Everyone complained last year when we got the franchise tag...now they're complaining when he has a 2 sack season and the Browns let him walk??
So if the Bengals had given him that type contract last year, we would have 2 sacks for 20 million dollars, or 10 million/sack. Good riddance.
Bengals management, coaches, radio announcers,players,fans,critics...I can help the process evolve to a top 5 franchise by reminding all concerned..Fundamentals..live it,coach it,believe it,do it,over and over and over. Ever go to training camp and watch the kickers for example. I would have them kicking til they were sore, Special teams would be consisted of ist team players, Kick offs, watch the successful teams on kick offs, they huddle at the kicker then spread out and attack different ways each kick. Also you cant tell me that there isnt someone on this planet who can kick the ball through the endzone everytime ,anywhere. Tackling, blitz blocking, plugging run lanes, knocking down passes, knocking people in the dirt and leave em there, too much talkin crap and not enough dealing the pain! - the worst Ive ever seen seen. Go for it or move on boys! take your money and run! Thats the problem too much pampering these boys who think the money makes em men! Doug Combs,Middletown, Ohio
So this is a place where we can only praise the Bengals for all of the great work they have done this year and in the past? Give me a break This is the same thing that happens every year. It is not about Justin Smith, who cares about him. It is about replacing him, it is about a plan, it is about being proactive. It is about all of the things the Bengals are not. Can you tell me the last impact free agent they landed? I'm still waiting.
After 17 years of ineptitude, it's gotten a little hard to hope for the best.
Pollyanna would be pizzed at the Bengals, and she's got a reputation for being pretty darn positive.
Player personnel decisions have to be being made by picking slips of paper out of a hat. At least then you got a 50% chance of being right. 1 winning season in 17 translates out to 6% right, 94% wrong.
Go Bengals. Bring home that 6%. Take it to the house. And you wonder why Ocho Sleazo is postioning himself to be traded?
I think everyone here, myself include, would drop the cynical viewpoints if the Bengals showed some, hell, any, real effort at fixing the dysfunctional management strategies they have employed ad infinitum. Until then, Mike Brown's legacy continues to be that of a guy who is as big a loser as his father was a winner. Sad, really.
This botched trade thing just boggles my mind. Please, Lord, grant us a miracle and fix the Bengals. Amen.
The Bengals and their so called front office is a joke. This is the worse franchise in all of pro sports. An owner that is only worried about the dollar. The way him and his family do their business is a joke. Head of scouting was a athletic director at a local high school.Marvins staff isnt very good either. Someone tell me how Jay Hayes has a job besides growing up with Marvin.Mikey and Katie keep up the good work.I think were looking at last in the division and a top 5 pick next year. But as we all know we have been there before.
If they sign McCree he will be just another ageing safety looking for his last payday. But we have been down that road before with Kim Herring and Dexter Jackson. Its all just window dressing to make it look like they care. Please Mark Cuban find a way to buy this team and end our misery with the Brown family.
Big name player after big name player continues to get signed by other clubs and the Bengals again have their tail between their legs. The Browns are getting better and the bengals are getting worse.
