49ers target Justin Smith

Justin Smith, the Bengals unrestricted free agent defensive end, will make his first visit to the San Francisco 49ers and not the Minnesota Vikings, according to ESPN.com. Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Bengals coordinator in 2003 and 2004, wanted Smith there first.

Smith will not visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to PewterReport.com.

Lines of communication will remain open between the Bengals and Jim Steiner, Smith's agent, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has said. Smith told Lewis that he would give the Bengals the chance to re-sign him.

UPDATE: Word is the 49ers are saying they won't let Smith get out of town without a contract. He is scheduled to fly to Minnesota later today or Saturday. The 49ers run a 3-4 (three linemen, four linebackers), a scheme in which Smith has not played as a pro.

The Vikings play a 4-3 and have two dominating defensive tackles in Pat Williams and Kevin Williams. Frazier knows that Smith would not get double-teamed the way he was with the Bengals. Smith's sack totals would increase with a team like the Vikings, and he would benefit from playing alongside those tackles, who occupy blockers.

During Frazier's two seasons as Bengals defensive coordinator, 2003 and 2004, Smith had five and eight sacks. Smith as 43.5 sacks in his career and has started an impressive 107 consecutive games.

We better have somebody good to replace him. (i know he had 2 sacks last year but there is only so much you can do when the two guys next to you are terrible and the defensive coordinator didnt have the guts to pass rush any linebackers [and were any of the linebackers a threat]) Justin would have done better than that if he had other good players around him... Peko, Thorton, Johnson, Jeanty, Jones didnt quite fit the bill as pass rushing threats. Great players also need help (not by any stretch of the imagionation is Smith a Great player, he just didnt get any credit he deserved)

Smith may not be the greatest sacker, but he never takes a play off and plays hard. Losing him will definitely weaken the team. He, not Geathers, has been the Bengals best d-lineman since he has been on the team. Sign him because whom we get in his place will not be as good.

I like Smith's intensity but he isn't worth the money. The franchise tag worked perfect on him. Let someone else over pay him. Go after Albert Haynesworth. An established Defensive tackle rather then building one which takes 3-4 years.

Haynesworth got franchise tagged.. the cost of pursuit is too high. Tenessee wouldn't let the best defensive lineman in the nfl go.

Mark why does your article state that the Bengal's released Tab Perry??? That is totally incorrect he was tendered, not released.

Yest Hanyesworth got tagged but isn't a 1st round pick worth the best established DT in football. Peko sucks, he's too small & building takes too long. Marvin needs to win this year or he's gone & I believe he knows that.

The Jets appear to be getting Kris Jenkins for a third and fifth round pick.
We will allegedly have an extra third round compensatory pick.
This is a deal the Bengals should make, but they won't because they're conservative and won't swing for the fences.

Whoever was questioning Mark's article regarding Tab Perry needs to read a little more, how about reading Bengals.com "The Bengals emerged Thursday with nearly $1 million more to spend in the market when they surprisingly opted not to tender an offer to restricted free-agent wide receiver Tab Perry. But he said Thursday night there's a good chance he'll be back." That "NOT" means we did not tender him, good job Mark, but are we going to do anything in FA?

Anon 10:42 -- Please reread Mark's posting on this blog and his article today. The Bengals did not tender Perry an offer meaning he has been released into unrestricted free agency.

Anon 10:42 seems to have a typo in his post but his point is still the same.

I believe he meant to say "That is totally incorrect he was [NOT] tendered, not released."

But the point is still that Perry was not released - he was simply non-tendered, which makes him a free agent.

That's not the same as being released.

The best move this offseason has been not re-signing Justin Smith.

How can anyone defend this keeping this guy, he has 2 SACK...He's a DE, his job is to put pressure on the QB which he hasn't done over his career. He was the number 2 pick in the draft..He's a bust

You can't release a player that is NOT under contract. Your article should say "Bengals decide not to tender Tab Perry". Why was the word "released" used???????????????
