6-year deal for Madieu with Vikings

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

Madieu Williams is a former Bengal.

The four-year veteran safety has agreed on parameters on a six-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings and is on a plane now headed to Minneapolis, agent Kenny Zuckerman said late this morning.

The contract with worth a total of $33 million.

"Leslie gave Minnesota the advantage," Zuckerman said of former Bengals defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, now with the Vikings.

Frazier was Bengals coordinator in 2003 and 2004 before being fired by head coach Marvin Lewis and replaced with Chuck Bresnahan, who was fired in January and replaced with Mike Zimmer.

Williams said Frazier is as good a coach as he ever had.

The Bengals made no offer to Williams but asked Zuckerman to check back with them with information about any other offers he had received.

As many as four other teams showed serious interest in Williams, Zuckerman said.

Williams was the second of two Bengals second-round draft choices in 2004. He played in 13 games with 13 starts last season, finishing sixth on the defense with 73 total tackles, including two sacks. He had two interceptions.

Williams finished the season on the injured reserve list after sustaining a thigh injury in the Pittsburgh game.

The Bengals started two rookie safeties down the stretch in Marvin White and Chinedum Ndukwe and now appear comfortable moving forward with them as their starters. Veteran Dexter Jackson might be an offseason salary-cap casualty.

Wow, the bengals are gonna suck.

The bengals' complacency with just "being competitive" is becoming all to clear now. I am not terribly upset to see Madieu go, I am just upset that there hasn't even been a peep out of the Bengals camp yet in FA. We have the funds to be aggressive, yet we choose not to be. I suppose I should be used to the Bengals sitting out of FA, but if they are going to continue to do so, at least hire more in the scouting department.

This franchise is the most inept decision making franchise I have ever seen,I wouldn't put any stock into seeing the bengals do anything(good) next season.

Funny how LF get's fired from the Bengals & now has a one of the best Defenses in the NFL,now he's taking his 2nd draft pick back.Look for MW to have a pro bowl year.

Bengals are stupid!!!

Thats AWESOME...I'm pumped. This is exactly what the Vikings need....no "stairwell incidents" no drug violations. Now its on to Berrian and J. Smith. Thanks Cinci!

We will miss him. I have always like him, he is a good character guy and I am sorry to see him go. Justin Smith...not so much

Definitely dissapointed with the Bengals letting him go. I still thik he would have been very valuable as the starting FS and mentoring the young talent in the defensive backfield and he could also have been the nickle back when in a passing situation and played a lot better than Deltha in those situations.

Over. Paid.

Not sold on turning over the secondary to a couple of 2nd year safeties, a second year CB and a third year CB, but Madieu is not worth that kind of cash.

This team never spends on safeties anyway. Who can blame them? Their excellent track record speaks for itself.

I wonder if Mike Brown is even out of bed and showered yet. Who runs a franchise like this. He has become completely detached from the desire to win and is simply viewing the team as an investment portfolio. Yet, I know this to be the case and I still cannot help but support the Bengals.

okay reddleg fraiser going to Minn and haveing a good defense is more a product of the players he has there then anything else...that being said, i agree that we are totally inept when it comes to personel decisions and that's why Minn has good players and a solid defense and we don't...this "our defense just has to keep us in games" mentality is killing me!!!!

Not a big fan of Williams of Smith but you do have to wonder if the Bengals even know free agency has started.

I'd like to see the Bengals do something in free agency, but come on, $33 million for Madieu Williams? He seems like a nice enough guy, but I won't miss his really poor tackling. Unless he can play CB for Minnesota, they just wasted a lot of money on a safety that can't tackle. I won't even get into his stupid dances every time he made a tackle...even as the defense was getting gashed play after play.

I'm glad to see the shoulder-tackle, whiffing safety go. Minnesota got a bad deal for $33 million. This opens the door for White & Chinney. How about solidifying the position with Nakamura in the 5th or 6th round of the draft. Does anyone realize we only have Whit & a broke leg Kenny Irons left out of (6) 2nd round picks during the Marvin Lewis era. Way to build through the draft. How bout trading that pick for something, anything.

Madieu Williams is not worth $33 million dollars, Chinedum Ndukwe looks to be promising anyways. The Bengals need to focus on the defensive line so we can stop the run and pressure the qb.

Why is anyone a bengals fan? How stupid do you have to be to continue to support such a lousy franchise and an owner who couldn't care less about winning.
I feel sorry for you people, until you stop showing up and spending money nothing will change. Wake up!

Justin Smith double teamed??????????????????? WHat a joke everytime I read an article that includes this type of non-sense I openly wonder have the writers actually reviewed or watched film of the game? I've watched every game going back to the mid 1970's almost and you can count of two hands the number of times Justin Smith has been double teamed by another team. The media tries so hard to make this guy sound like some kind of stud, face it he's a try hard slightly above average player at best. Frazier and the Vikings can have him and I will gladly accept the compensatory 3rd rounder for him next year.

I would have liked to see Madieu stay since he is of quality character and a decent player, but for that kind of money, he can go. White and Ndukwe will be just fine at safety.

I would like to see the Bengals make some free agency moves, but there really isn't much out there of interest. Lance Briggs would be nice, if the Bears don't resign him. Calvin Pace could easily replace Justin Smith's numbers. And there are a handful of interesting LBs.

Oh, and about the Browns signing Anderson. I'm not sold that that was a good move. He got off to a good start, but then faded. The last 7 games of the season he threw 10 picks and 9 tds. He put up his best two games against the worst two teams in the league (Miami and St. Louis).

In order for the Browns to be successful, Quinn wil have to step in and start at some point this season.

Take the money you'll save on getting rid of Justin Smith and not resigning Madieu and go get Michael Huff...The Raiders are shopping him, due to salary reasons.

The Vikings are idiots.
While everyone ragged on first Chad Johnson and then Palmer this season, Madieu Williams regularly was late in coverage, and saw his tackles get broken.
He was awful this year, outplayed by both Ndukwe and White, and if that's the kind of money he's going for, an average cover safety who's afraid of physical contact, then the Bengals did the right thing here.

Consider that we should get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick in the '09 draft and it doesn't sting as much. That and the fact that Madieu "Ole!" Williams couldn't tackle worth a darn.

Come one people, he isn't worth 33 million for 6 years. He hasn't done anything since he has been here except miss tackles and get hurt. What do you do.....keep working with what you have and try and get some other players through the draft or even free agency, although the Bengals track record with free agents isn't much too be desired. Seems like they need more talent evaluators than anything...how about spending money on some more scouts so we can get some good young talent like the Reds are about to showcase!

As a Bengals fan, I am THRILLED to see that the Browns gave Anderson a contract. I am hoping for more 4-interception performances like he had in Week 16 last year! Keep Brady Quinn on the sidelines as long as possible, Romeo!

Sorry, that was a bit off-topic. I'm happy for Madieu, and glad to see that other teams seem to be a lot more DESPERATE (some would call it "proactive") than the Bengals...

You people kill me...not only is it a $33 million, it's $13 million guaranteed and $17 million in the first three years. If the Bengals would have done the same contract with him you would be saying, they're stupid, this and that etc...... Way too much for a good player who's been hurt most of the time he's been a Bengal. I like him too, for his ball hawkin ability, but his pad level is too high. Mr. reddlegg, have you ever heard of Mike Tomlin? yea, he was the DC in Minn the year prior to Les getting the job. Not to take anything away from Les, but the defense was in place and down the stretch they where mediocre. Just relax, there's only about 3 free agents out there that will make a difference and Justin is not one of them!

I know it may not be popular. But... Reading mock drafts online etc... If certain players fall a certain way and Bengals don't get one of the prized DEF Lineman or other top players. I believe you take best player available. Therefore Bengals should consider that safety from Miami U whs ranked as best safety and one of best players in draft.

The Bengals did great in letting Williams go. He's not worth that much. I have seen him get stiff armed into the grass when tackling a rb waay too many times..He seemed like a nice guy though.
