Paper: Rogers ends up with Browns

The reason wasn't clear, but the trade today of defensive tackle Shaun Rogers from the Lions to the Bengals didn't happen.

Theories ranged late tonight from the league stepping in because the trade violated a salary-cap rule to one that the trade was never reported to the NFL office, leaving the Lions free to negotiate another deal with another team. Another explanation was faulty language in the trade forced the NFL to void it.

According to The Detroit News, Rogers ended up with the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a third-round pick in April’s draft and cornerback Leigh Bodden.

The Bengals had no comment tonight on the situation.

According to the Associated Press in Detroit, the Lions were aggressively trying to trade Rogers because he was due to make a $1 million roster bonus at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

Can it get any worse that this?? Our arch rivals come in and land the guy. http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

Clowns get Rodgers for 3rd rounder and Leigh Booden like Mark said.

If you believe that then you are insane. There is no difference between the 2 draft picks and a third and a player when it comes to the CBA and salary cap issues.

What Salary Cap Rules the Bengals have $30 Million to spend...Mark there is more tothis than the league just rejecting a trade. AAAAHAAHHAHAHAHAHA I am Pissed. Why is this city and franchise cursed...why why why!!!

Good God whats next?

Mark- Please explain your story. How in the hell does trading a 3rd and a 5th round pick for Rogers violate the leagues salary cap rules?

Talk about an emotional rollercoaster ride, 6 hours ago the Bengals were on the verge of being a good defensive team with Rogers and then possibly getting Odom this weekend. Hopefully something else gets done within the next few days.

Just an excuse for the NFL to get back at the Bengals for past problems.

at 2/29/2008 10:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

There's only two scenarios here and both are horrible:

1) Bengals front office works on a trade all day and doesn't make it work under league rules. So in this case they are overmatched and incompetent.

2) The league really does have it out for the Brown family and Bengals (handling Odell, unfair suspensions, this trade)

Either option makes me want to give up the NFL.

And the Browns get the deal done. They know what they are doing and the Bungles are clueless. Thanks Mike Brown for another long long season.

Ah, the Bungles strike again. If the Browns signed Rogers this will be very bad. If so F Goodell, the NFL and the rest for nixing the deal. Looks like 1 more year of false hope. thanks Roger, u b@stard.

what a joke, the 2 picks we offered and all the cap room we had nothing to do with this. What salary cap rules?? the 2 picks had nothing to do with the lions salary and getting rogers should not have effected us - we have planty of room. There is more to this and we're getting screwed yett again!!!

at 2/29/2008 10:54 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mark, a few questions if you're kind enough to answer 'em:

1. How does this deal run "afoul of the salary cap?" Doesn't Cincinnati have a lot of space?

2. Does this mean the Browns will not get Corey Williams from Green Bay (and is he a possibility for Cincinnati)?

3. Does this maybe set up a sign Odom, draft Ellis offseason for the defense?

at 2/29/2008 10:55 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mark - What salary cap rule is this? Could you be more specific? I thought the Bengals were fine under the salary cap and a $7 million hit for this year shouldn't put us over it. Am I missing something?

It ran afoul of league salary-cap rules???

You have got to be kidding me. I know the Mike Brown family doesn't know much about family. I thought for sure they had the salary-cap figured out. This is no excuse the Bengals can lay on me... the whole family has IVY League law degrees for crying out loud!

Bengals, you really know how to play with the emotions of your loyal fan base. You screwed this up, I would have more respect for you if you would just come out admit it.

More importantly, go back to the drawing board, and figure out what plan B is and that is how to get defense in stripes that knows how to be aggressive that can stop the run, and put pressure on the QB!

Even if the trade was rejected, I still don't buy that he's going to the Browns without more info. The Browns website says the deal for Corey Williams would have involved Cleveland giving up a 2nd rounder, "its only first day pick remaining" for Williams. How can the Browns then give up their 3rd round pick for Rogers... they don't have one....???

at 2/29/2008 11:23 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

People! Everyone should know the new salary cap is tied to the league's perceived competence of the team's ownership. Instead of $30M under the cap the Bengals are actually $30 over the cap with the new structure.

Roger Goodel.

for god sakes trade carson palmer now!!! don't waste a guy with all the potential, charisma and talent he has in this joke of a franchise.

there is absolutely no reason to believe that this team will ever amount to anything worthwhile as long as the brown family is in charge...which of course will be FOREVER!!!

2005 was nothing but a fluke.

As usual, thanks for nothing Mr. Brown.

Bengal fans...be glad this guy went to the Clowns...he is overweight and overpaid. A 3 & 5 for someone who ran out of gas after 8 games last year because he was too fat.

He also choked out a stripper and has multiple children with multiple women...another fine citizen.

Things will be ok...we have Petko in the middle, with Fannene, Rucker, Robinson, Thorton, Geather, & Pollack rotating on the DL...all is well.

This is the best trade the ever happened, trust me. This is from a life long Lions fans as well.

Sorry... forgot about that. Nonetheless, I think Cleveland overpaid for this guy. Sounds like he'd be another Sam Adams. I agree that this may turn out to be the best trade they never made, especially if they can still bring Odom in and sign him. If Rogers is so great, why was Detroit so anxious to dump him???

So is this your first try at this Free Agent stuff? Mike Brown, if this story pans out then it is the best argument for hiring a dedicated GM who can handle player matters. And leave you to do other things - like find ways to win!

Typical. The Browns vastly improve their team with two stud defensive linemen. What do we have to show for it? Dhani Jones - an aging veteran. Sound familair?

Can't say I blame the Lions. They got a much better deal.

Then again with Bowden gone, who do they have who can cover Chad?

We better pick up a difference maker or two (Pace would be nice or swing a trade for Stroud). Otherwise, it's another six or seven win season.

At least The REDS have a goal of bringing a WINNING franchise back to Cincinnati.. The Greater Cincinnati Browns Backers meet at the Willie's in Lawrenceburg off of 275 for Browns games. We would love to see you there rooting for Paul Brown's original team. Dont put up with this who dey crap, jump on the Browns Bandwagon today!

The reason that Mike Brown does not care is that all of the Bengal fans are still selling out PBS, buying all the jerseys and buying their seast licenses.

First off, yes go Cleveland. 2nd, we had a 3rd rounder. We gave this years 1st and last drafts 2nd for Quinn. Then we gave last years 3rd and 4th for Dallas orginal 2nd for Wright. Then we traded our 6th for Dallas 2 low 6th round picks. For Rodgers deal, my guess is the Bengals rushed in made the offer, not choosing to use proper channels and report it to the NFL HQ. They got it, then had to do the paperwork and report it. By then the Browns topped it and Detroit backtracked. That 3rd and 4th for rights to draft Wright last year got us this. Who Dey? The Browns are, need 1 more de and a outside linebacker, and the front seven has been retooled

You doggers over this trade ought to be happy it got screwed up. Rodgers never won anything in Detroit. He made plays on Thanksgiving!! But I saw a fat out of shape player who always had to leave the games because he was out of shape. He was on the sidelines during Dallas game winning drive last season. He also was hurt alot. Use those draft picks on a couple Def lineman. But at least Bengals tried to make a move!

Couple of things. First, in defense of a good writer with a wicked-cool first name, he was not the one to say it WAS a salary-cap issue, he just stated that was one of the rumors. Second, the last 17 years of suckitude should have taught us that Mikey and the Morons can't do anything right. Inevitabley, this "langauge screw-up" is just dumb oversight by a bunch of cheap idiots. I'm pissed at the Bengals for mucking this up, but I'm even more pissed at myself for getting excited about the worst-run franchise in professional sports. Yes, it's worse than the Clippers right now. Donald Sterling is a GENIUS compared to Mike "Charlie" Brown and his Company of Blockheads. Once again the football was pulled right before we went to kick it, and we're lying in the dirt.

Being a Detroit guy believe me when I say this is the best thing that could have happened to the Bengals. You don't want Rogers. Here's what you would have gotten. A man that is the definition of underacheiving and lazy, he's one test away from a year long suspension. Not to mention the of field issues at a strip club!!! He's not worth the risk. You'll 2 or 3 games where he plays well, that's it. Cleveland did you a favor. Don't look at his highlights, look at the whole body of work. Sign Odom this Sunday and get a few players in a deep draft. You guys will be better off.

at 3/01/2008 7:58 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Did any of you think the language issues/salary cap could have been put in by the Lions? Maybe that was a big part of the deal for them.

I think Mark should have an IQ test prior to someone being able to post. I think it would cut down on some of the idiotic comments I've seen. I don't think Shaun Rodgers was ths savior of the franchise, I think the Lions had a worse defense than the Bengals.

at 3/01/2008 8:02 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You state that the trades can only involve draft choices, how can the Browns deal involve a current player and be valid? Not being a conspiracy theorist, but it seems like the commissioner's office has gone out of its way over the last year to screw over the Bengals at any opportunity. Didn't know the commissioners office was on the schedule every year.

Some of you are misunderstanding the trade. The Lions gave up a 3d round pick and Rogers to get Leigh Bodden from the Cleveland Browns.

Why so quick to bash the Bengals organization without knowing what actually happened?

at 3/01/2008 9:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

All the people whining are either fans of other teams or just plain dumb Bengals fans. I'd much rather have the 3rd pick than Rogers--I read one Browns fan comment of a "top D lineman" and it's definitely *not* Rogers. He's overweight, not motivated, and carries tons of off-field baggage. I groaned when I heard the Sam Adams...er, Rogers, trade. Thankfully it didn't happen--I wonder if enough people had second thoughts and sabotaged the contract?

Free agency is for teams rebuilding, or already at a championship level. As terrible as the Browns were, anyone would be an upgrade. As great as the Patriots are, they can afford to reach--and have the talent to turn bad players around. The Bengals are middle-of-the-road. Draft picks can be had for much less and have a much greater upside than Rogers.

Quit cryin'. It might be a long season, but the Rogers trade won't be the reason why.

at 3/01/2008 9:47 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am actually glad this thing fell apart. We don't need another Sam Adams on the team. This guy was a trouble maker in Detroit and the Bengals have had enough of those guys on the team already. If this guy is so great why was Detroit so eager to get rid of him?

at 3/01/2008 9:59 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

As we all know, this has Mikey Boy Brown written all over it. I'm sure his creative writing of a contract set off the NFL. Who's always the "NO" vote at NFL meetings? The Brown family has no interest in winning, an 8-8 season is their dream season. This will not change until Carson speaks up or threatens to leave.

more overreaction. People are making it seem that Rogers was the top DT in the league. He wasn't...there were some red flags wit the guy so maybe this is a blessing is disguise. Also this isn't Marvin's fault. He's not in the front office..It's M.Brown clan that takes the hit for this mix up.

at 3/01/2008 10:08 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Best thing that could happen - Rogers was the second coming of Sam Adams on the field and Chris Henry off the field.

As for all you nuts crying that the NFL has it out for the ebngals - huh? Mike Brown is an idiot, that's the problem.

Only thing different about this - their screw up won't hurt them.

at 3/01/2008 10:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're better off without Rogers anyway. Having watched every game he's played since being drafted I can honestly say that he's not the player you think he is. The last few seasons he's only been on the field for about 30% of all defensive plays a game because he's winded. The guy is fat, lazy and unmotivated. It was common for the Lions to be in critical 3rd and short situations while Rogers was on the sidelines getting oxygen after playing on 1st and 2nd down.

When one of the worst teams in the league considers you to be a detriment in the locker room - your days in the NFL are likely numbered.

at 3/01/2008 10:15 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

'Faulty language' is probably a nice way to say that yet again the Bengals tried to screw someone out of money. Loyalty clauses, sweetheart leases, players buying their own locker room towels. When does the madness end? Can anyone figure this front office out? I mean, who is really steering the ship here? It's a bunch of nepotist with no other experience than their parents handing over the reigns. I have >>> Z E R O <<< confidence in this team.

I feel Mike Brown called off the trade. He called off the Sapp signing a few years back & he never makes trades. The Bengals need to hire an outside GM. The Brown family just isn't good at their job. 1 winning season in 17 years doesn't say much.

at 3/01/2008 10:20 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know, I tend to believe the Detroit fans who say he's a lazy, fat, bad-character guy. But you know what? WHY would I expect anything else from this franchise?

Mike Brown and the family band are terrific business minds. Their business is designed around losing, and Mike's REALLY good at being a loser. It makes major $$$$ somehow.

The real quandary here is, why is it that EVERY off season, fans are convinced that THIS is the year the Bengals will start winning??? Houdini and David Copperfield together couldn't pull off a stunt like this.

Its very simple the Browns have a GM and the Bengals do not,They have very little experience with these sort of things.

Hey Bengal Whiners:

For those of you that think Shaun Rogers is fat & lazy, consider this:
2007 Stats: 7 sacks, 78 total tackles, 47 solo tackles, 31 assists. He had more sacks than ANYONE on the Bengals roster last year, and tied Justin Smith for total tackles. The same Justin Smith that you simply let walk away. Shaun Rogers outperformed everyone on your defensive roster last year, and you call HIM fat & lazy? It's no wonder that Chad Johnson wants out of that dreadful city. GO BROWNS.

at 3/01/2008 11:15 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Riddle me this: if Rogers is so horrible, why are so many teams after him? Last time I checked, he racked up seven sacks last season, did all of the Bungles D-linemen have seven sacks total last year? For everyone saying, "We'll be fine with who we've got" how do you come to this conclusion? The D sucked last year and so far, we've lost two starters and aren't close to replacing them. Anyone actually thinking the Bungles will sign Odom is living in a dream world; he'll come in, get a lowball offer and sign with the next team he visits because they'll actually make an effort to make him feel welcome. Thank God for NFL Sunday Ticket so I won't have to watch the Bungals go 3-13 next season.

Any possibility the NFL sends a MSFT Word copy of the Browns/Lions' trade document and they do a find on the words Browns/Lions/Leigh Bodden/Sean Rodgers and replace with Bengals/Jaguars/5th round draft pick/Marcus Stroud? Maybe they can get the language right then!

News Flash:
(Just when you thought it couldn't get worse).

The NFL has notified the BenGALS that they must forfeit the contracts of Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson & Rudi Johnson because of more "faulty language" & "salary cap rules". To avoid shame on the NFL, the Bengals have been suggested to join the Arena Football League. GO BROWNS.

I can't take this anymore. You people have no idea of what you are talking about. He was not another Sam Adams, Sam was 33-34 years old when we signed him Rodgers is 29 and had 7 sacks last year. The bottom line is we screwed this up and the Browns did not. I have never posted on a comment board before but you people say things with not knowledge of what you are talking about. Being a Bengals fan has made us crazy. The bottom line is our goal and the Browns goal was the same this offseason, that was to get better on D. The browns have picked up Rodgers from Detroit and Williams from Green Bay. We have lost Smith and Williams. If you didn't want to sign them fine, but bottom line is they are better we are worse.

I love all of the posts here by Cleveland fans trashing the ineptitude of the Bengals. Last I looked the Browns were pretty much Bengal clones i.e. high flying passing game, passable running game, and an even worse defense. Romeo was about to be run out of town on a rail last year and now he and Phil Savage are geniuses. The improvements the Browns made trading for Williams and Rogers is negated by the decision to re-sign Derek Anderson. HE'S NOT VERY GOOD. Third best QB in his own division. Oh well, hopefully Brady Quinn can get more endorsement deals as a backup on an 8-win team next year.

The difference between the Browns and Bengals is simple: the Browns areactually trying to win, the Bengals are just trying to make as much money as possible.

Man, I wish I had enough time to search around on other team's blogs and talk cyber-trash - real cooool Browns fans. I am leaning more toward the side that Detroit liked the deal with Cleveland a bit better, having a veteran DB over a 5th rounder - who can blame them? I am not going to go so far as to say that we would not benefit from the Rogers trade, but is he really the kind of guy we need in our locker room at this point? Really, until the season starts and Rogers drops some lb's and actually proves himself, this doesn't really mean a whole lot. Lets just hope the Odom trade works out, or something similar, and we draft well. Don't get too excited Sleazeland, this guy is one substance test or a stripper away from being suspended - plus the fact that he, or anyone for that matter, could pull a Bentley. Bengals fans, please refrain from leaping into the Ohio river until things shake out. Keep your heads up, everything is going to be fine.

I suspect there were two issues at play here. First, Rogers was due a $1 Million roster bonus from the Lions if he wasn't traded before midnight. Perhaps, under the CBA between the NFL and the NFLPA, the team acquiring the player assumes the contractual liability for the roster bonus. If that's the case, then the salary cap violation may have been the Bengals attempt to avoid paying the roster bonus. There was also a rumor that the civil lawsuit by the stripper may have played a role, whether it was the NFL stepping in because of all the character issues the Bengals have had or the Bengals getting cold feet. In any event, the Lions got a much better deal and the Browns are greatly improved.
