League stops Rogers trade to Bengals

UPDATED: 10:25 p.m.
The NFL nixed the trade today of Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Bengals for two draft picks because it ran afoul of league salary-cap rules.

The Bengals had agreed to trade third- and fifth-round picks to Detroit in April’s draft in exchange for Rogers, who plays at more than 360 pounds and had seven sacks among his 66 tackles in 2007.

The Bengals confirmed nothing today, even as reports swirled nationally that Lions officials had said they'd traded Rogers to the Bengals for third- and fifth-round picks in April's draft. The Bengals have the 77th overall pick in Round 3 but are expecting to gain compensatory draft picks in the third and fifth rounds for 2007 free agent defections.

Kennard McGuire, Rogers' agent, told The Enquirer in an e-mail this afternoon that Rogers had been traded to the Bengals.

Neither the Bengals nor Lions backed out. The league stepped in to prevent the trade.

The Detroit News is reporting tonight on its Web site that Rogers was headed to Cleveland for a third-round pick and cornerback Leigh Bodden. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said last week at the scouting combine that their priority was to upgrade their front seven defensively.

ORIGINAL POST:
I'm working now to get details on what I have learned is a Bengals trade with the Detroit Lions for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire, confirmed the trade in an e-mail to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Bengals, though, as of 5:30 p.m., were not in a position to confirm it, public relations director Jack Brennan said.

Rogers, at 340 pounds, could play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. He will turn 29 next month and is a seven-year veteran. He had 66 tackles last season for the Lions, seven of them sacks.

The Bengals are trading their third-and fifth-round picks to the Lions in exchange for Rogers.

After the 2004 season, Rogers signed a six-year, $46 million contract extension that made him the league's highest paid defensive tackle at the time. He has three years remaining on a contract that will pay him $4.25 million in 2008.

Rogers was suspended for four games during the 2006 season for violation of the substance abuse policy. He denied taking steroids and said the banned substance was in an appetite suppressant he was taking to control late-night cravings.

The Bengals are apparently set on remaking their defensive line. While it appears that end Justin Smith will sign with the 49ers -- or the Vikings if he doesn't do a quick deal in San Francisco -- the Bengals will entertain a prized free agent Sunday in Tennessee Titans defensive end Antwan Odom.

Odom, a four-year veteran from Alabama, is a 274-pound defensive end who had a career-high eight sacks last season for the Titans. He is an unrestricted free agent. The visit with the Bengals will be his first.

Can the Bengals overcome the problems Sean Rogers had with Detroit last year? Also, any truth to the rumor that the Bengals are talking trade with the Falcons for Deangelo Hall??

Heard a 3rd & 5th rounder. Once a leap year apparently the Bengals make a move.

What's his contract status?

Here's the beef !! a 3 rd and a fifth was too much to give up for a troublesome DT. But Mikey likes the sideshow more than football anyway.

I hope it was just a single 4th round or 5th round pick. This guy is a lazy bum with a bad attitude. Just another joker the Bengals don't need. If I was Carson, I'd demand a trade outta this joke of a franchise. Why couldn't they have gotten Jenkins for a 3rd and 5th like the Jets did...Oh, that's right, EVERYONE, including other NFL team's personnel hate Mike Brown.

Shaun Rogers move is I think the best I've seen recently. Hopefully Keith Rivers or Gholston drop down in the draft. Nice move Marvin and Mike!! show us some D!!

Good luck. hope you like a guy who only plays half the time. Yep, check how many snaps per game last year.

I like this move - finally a telented D-lineman to build around.

I think this will pay off big time.

We finally made a move, now if we add Odom to the mix that's 15+ sacks, I like the sound of that!

Best move! Rodgers is a beast and his sack total alone at DT was more than both our ends combined. If he comes in motivated this could be something special! Now lets get Odell and Brooks back healthy and pick up a DE in FA or the draft and the front seven may not part like the red sea!!!!

A third and a fifth rounder for Rogers???

I'd make that move everyday, and twice on Sunday. Rogers was Lionized, it's would be hard not to be playing for that organization.

A great trade, well done.

People in this city never cease to amaze...look above to see why.

this blows - typical lions move. this guy is worth more than a 3rd or 5th round especially since millen is drafting (drafting skills arent worth a dump). The lions are like a charity here, constantly giving away talent for nothing (ie bly for Bell and Foster - both sucked and were benched). I knew Millen was an idiot but he continues to amaze me. I'm pissed

What is there not to like. The move to a 3-4. The guy weighs 340lbs he is a nose tackle. to give up a 3rd and a 5th round pick with all the picks they have allready this is a no brainer. remember that the Bengals are supposed to be recieving an additional 3rd round pick for the loss of Steinbach last year.

Mark anyword on Rodgers Contract numbers? Guranteed Money and total Salary Cap hit, plus years on his contract?

There are rumors that he takes plays off but he's help the depth at nose tackle..At least the Bengals are trying to redo the defensive..No more of that bs "discipline talk"

340 POUNDS AND 7 SACKS! That sounds like a lot of fun to watch! Look out, Big Ben!

I like the move, even with giving the Lions two picks, they still have 10 picks in this draft. (I read this on bengals.com) And giving up a 3rd and a 5th, this was an easy deal. Hopefully we'll get more good news, Marvin knows he has to make that defense better, his job depends on it.

GREAT TRADE!!!!!!! No doubt about that. We do still need a DE. I would like to see how this works out. I think now we need someone that has a frame like Gathers, strong and fast. I am kind of worry about what his contract is like from detroit. I don't know how many years we have him for and how much he makes. Who dey!

People against this trade calm down, here is the math on it: the Bengals have 11 draft picks, most likely 2 3rd rounders, so they still have 9 picks this year, there is no way, at we better hope not, that all 9 rookies will make this team. So, this is a great trade, he has made the pro bowl twice, had 7 sacks last year for the crappy Lions, and he is under contract for 3 more years for only 5-7 mil a year. What's there not to like?

For everyone excited about a 3-4: Brooks has ONE NFL GAME under his belt as a LB going into his 3rd season. Odell is an alcoholic that may not even be allowed to play. Landon is going bye, bye in FA. That leaves Dhani Jones (if he re-signs) & Rashad Jeanty... They better sign some other FA LB's and do some drafting as well.

Seems a little much to give up. I hope this works. It looks like Marvin is staking his defensive reputation on Rogers. An unmotivated, out-of-shape space eater.

The Sam Adams comparison isn't a good one. He is significantly younger than when Adams came here.

I like the deal... he is signed for the next three years and the first two are affordable. Imagine this front seven if we sign Odom and draft Harvey at 9:

Odom - Rodgers - Harvey accross the front

Jeanty/Jones - Brooks - Thurman - Geathers (as a hybrid) backing them up. That plus the kids we have in the secondary and suddenly we have a defense.

Well if hiring Zimmer as our DC, didn't clinch a move to a 3-4, this move most certainly did.

So that said, this is a GREAT move if you are running a 3-4. You need a HUGE NT to take up two blockers, to help free up a linebacker, and above all else Rogers is HUGE. Hopefully he will be reengergized by playing for a new team.

Now I am worried a little about the linebackers, but something tells me Zimmer has a plan, and hopefully the Bengals can execute it. Also the fact that it appears that Dhani is going to resign, definitely helps.

Anon 4:36:

since the 3-4 switch looks imminent, you're forgetting that Robert Geathers would also move to Linebacker...so him and jeanty on the outside with brooks/thurman inside. Dhani jones is already a backup. a pretty good one i'd say

HOLD UP..HOLD UP...Are you saying theres a Rumor on getting DeAngelo Hall in here???...This Could Be The Trade People...If We can get a Shut Down Corner in here like DeAngelo Hall that would be The Trade,I like Shaun Rogers, but to get DeAngelo Hall would be over the top,our corners are way too young and we need a vet to give the young guns in the secondary to stabilize the youth...WOW MAKE THAT HAPPIN BENGALS...Im A Season Ticket Holder,Pleaseee Hear Our Voice!

James from Centerville

The only way that we get Deangelo Hall is if we send over Chad Johnson. With the two young boys only going to get better (but be patient b/c Leon Hall is likely to have the sophomore slump), there's too much money involved for D-Hall to come in here. He's a great player...but not after the Rogers payday. I guess you can all dream though.

UMMMM......

Pollack-rodgers-odom/fanene

Jeanty--brooks--thurman--geathers

joseph Hall

White Ndukwe

Even a frostee at end and eric henderson.......

This is without having a top ten draft pick, I think half of you are nuts. Looks pretty damn good to me.

I think the people who think we are now going to a 3-4 need to wake up a little. You don't trade for a DT who lead or tied all NFL DT's in sacks from a 4-3 and then move to a 3-4 where he will be doubled every play, it would be stupid. I don't even think our front office is quite that stupid. Another clue for you guys is Odom visiting us, he is definitely a 4-3 DE and not a guy you would want at a 3-4 DE spot, just too small to hold the point of attack and too good of a pass rusher to waste there also. This constant infatuation with Ahmad Brooks drives me crazy, this guy has done NOTHING so far in the games, he is nothing but an infatuation for the Cincinnati media. It's amazing how Cincy fans drink the kool-aid so easily without any production out of player just based on a few articles by writers who are generally spewing what the Bengal's front office wants them to hear.

In regards to DeAngelo HAll being a shut down corner, no I don't think so. Shutdown corners don't exist. Generally Champ Bailey is viewed as the best corner and a shutdown corner, but I recall Chad Johnson schooled him on Monday Night football a few years ago. Shut down corners don't exist. I like the Rogers trade.

Thats the great Bengals front office. Finally they hear about other teams helping their teams by making trades and go to do one only to realize they didnt cover all their bases. no this team doesnt need a GM. Good move Mikey and Katie

Sorry guys, we got a better deal with cleveland, thank you league office for not letting the bengals fleece our stupid GM.
