Official: Utecht a Bengal

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

The Bengals this morning announced that tight end Ben Utecht is now theirs.

The NFL informed the Bengals this morning that the Indianapolis Colts decided not to match the Bengals' offer sheet for Utecht, who had been a restricted free agent.

On March 14, the Bengals signed Utecht to a three-year, $9 million offer sheet as a restricted free agent.

Utecht, speaking from by phone from the Twin Cities, told The Enquirer that he already had talked this morning to Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis.

"The emotional roller coaster, the last few weeks, is over," Utecht said. "It's finally good to be graduated and know where I'll be."

Utecht has plans to visit his parents over the Easter weekend and won't be attending the opening of the Bengals offseason strength and conditioning program Monday.

"I was on the Colts' schedule, and they don’t start until March 31,” Utecht said. "Coach Lewis understood."

Indianapolis, which had signed Utecht as a college free agent in 2004 – he was injured and missed all of that season – had extended him a one-year, $927,000 qualifying offer as a restricted free agent.

The tender guaranteed Utecht that one-year salary and gave the Colts seven days to decide whether to match an offer sheet Utecht might sign with another team. The Colts will not receive any draft-pick compensation from the Bengals because Utecht was not a drafted player.

Utecht had 31 receptions for 364 yards (11.7-yard average) and one touchdown in 2007.

Career, he has 71 receptions and an 11.3-yard average with three touchdowns; 41 of his career receptions have resulted in first downs. His goal, Utecht said, was to play in the Bengals offense with quarterback Carson Palmer.

Utecht also visited the Jets. With the Colts, he played behind Dallas Clark.

With the Bengals, Utecht would provide a pass-receiving threat at tight end, complementing blocking-oriented starter Reggie Kelly.

The Bengals have two other tight ends under contract, Daniel Coats and Nate Lawrie.

The Bengals obviously have big plans for Utecht. He is being paid roughly the same contract that Kelly signed last March as an unrestricted free agent to stay with the Bengals, $9 million over three years.

Last month, in an interview with The Enquirer, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said the team was interested in finally drafting a receiving-oriented tight end. Now, with the additional of

Utecht, they don’t have to.

In 2007, Bengals tight ends combined for 32 receptions (Kelly, 20; Coats, 12) and no touchdowns.

Utecht, at 6 feet, 6 inches, 251 pounds, runs well and can stretch the middle of the field.

He was a wide receiver in high school and wants to add a run-after-the-catch threat to the Bengals offense.

"I want to help take some pressure off the outside guys (wide receivers)," he said. "I'm excited to be moving onto Cincinnati."

Fantastic...another good move by Cincinnati..I like to sign them young and ready to play. Carson needed a TE to throw to and from my understandingn he is a good blocker as well. Congrats Ben and Welcome to Cincinnati.

Can you see Chad, T.J. Uteckt and Henry with Kelly in the backfield to block, or put Watson or Perry in the backfield. Is it run or pass? who would you double? I like the possibilities!

Good signing. With him playing behind Dallas Clark the guy should of picked up some solid football knowledge. Everytime I saw Utecht play he caught the ball when he was supposed to..

Good pickup by the Bengals. Utecht seems to be the type of TE the Bengals have wanted for a while. While he isn't known for his blocking, he'll certainly block better than Matt Schobel did in his time here. And at 6'5" with some speed, he's a good dual-threat player who will probably only get better. Indy was certainly thinking about matching, but just couldn't do it with their cap numbers. The Bengals did their homework on this one.

The only negative I have seen this off-season was letting Landon Johnson go. I believe we needed him back, even if we had to overpay. But if the injured LBs come back close to 100%, we should be OK there.

Now, if we can just land Ellis in the draft...

i do not think alot of people stop to consider how any team would fare losing both offensive tackles, your linebackers, your running back, chris henry not available for the first half of the season (so far so good on chris this offseason). which lead to double coverage for tj and cj. carson felt he had to make tough throws to win. you become predictable and easy to defence. we had to keep andrews because of andersons uncertainty. now add chris perry back, the signing of utecht, now double teaming tj,chad and chris henry will be painful for teams. take it one step further trade down and pick up another 2nd or 3rd round pick take mendenhall, release rudi you would have maybe two 2nd round picks or an extra 3rd d tackle is very deep you will get two good ones and maybe a good center. i believe the young linbackers will grow up this year and with our new defensive coaches we will be very good. we need to get over the 90s.

Let's get Utecht and trade up and get Dorsey/Ellis. As far as Chad goes, he can stay at home. I used to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I've had enough, and I'm sure the rest of the team has as well. If Mario Manningham is there in the 2nd, snag him, and Chad can rot for all I care. Somebody get that baby his bottle. I'll take Utecht and polished route runner in the 2nd/3rd over Chad. Addition through subtraction.

I agree, way to go, great pickup, and I too believe we need to trade up and get a stud defencive tackle, we have the extra draft choices burn a couple and get that tackle, offensive lineman will be available in later rounds and for Ocho, SHUT UP AND DO YOUR JOB!!!, you're not getting out or more money, get over it, and to the Bengals, PAY HUSH!!!! and as far as linebackers go, Odell will make you forget all about Landon, he is a stud and will be glad to see him back in the orange and black.
GO BENGALS

Excellent move with Utecht! Great abilities and excellent intangibles. The kind of guy we need on our team.

As for Child...I mean Chad...Johnson - it's time to grow up. I've always been one of his biggest advocates, but I'm done with his behavior. Very selfish. I've been battling through cancer for 5 years now. I go to work every day and do my job to the fullest. I don't complain. I don't make demands. I do the best with what I'm blessed.

If Chad can't learn to see past himself, it's time for the Bengals to take steps (draft?) to prepare for his dismissal in the near future. One man's talent, no matter how great, is no match for the harm caused by a bad attitude.

Good pickup.....we must now get Chad & T.J. on the right page !!I would love to see Chad stay & Marv...Less go. M.L. will be fired after contract expires . Very poor coach who laughs after losses!!(not a good trait)Way out of touch

Awesome signing. I am so glad Utecht can play defensive tackle for our awful defense. Defense wins games not tight ends.
