Andrews signs tender contract

The Bengals today signed guard/tackle Stacy Andrews, who was designated last month as the team's franchise player.

Andrews is a fifth-year NFL player in 2008. He exercised his option to sign a one-year contract for a salary equal to the average of the top five offensive linemen in the NFL in 2007. Andrews' one-year tender is $7.455 million. He is now under contract for the 2008 season.

"We're happy Stacy is signed in advance of our offseason work," head coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement, "and this does not preclude our continuing to talk to Stacy and his representatives about reaching a longer-term agreement."

Andrews played in every game last season with 14 starts. He started Games 1-3 at left guard, and later replaced injured Pro Bowler Willie Anderson at right tackle, starting there in Games 5 and 7-16. He was a key contributor to the team’s record-low total of 17 sacks allowed. The Bengals ranked second in the NFL in fewest sacks allowed, just one off the pace of league leader New Orleans.

Lets not mess this up yet again, get the long-term deal done. We can NOT afford to pay him top 5 money, especially if he doesn't start!

I agree with the last comment. We have to get this guy signed long-term to reduce the cap hit. We still REALLY NEED a DT. I think we'll get one in the draft, but we need to add a solid veteran too. Odom was a great signing, but he won't get any pressure if they don't get push up the middle.

I did NOT know the Bengals only allowed 17 sacks!! THAT is very impressive! I still scratch my head at the inability to run the ball this past year. I hope our beloved Bengals get that straightened out. Good for Stacey Andrews and the Bengals. Continuity is almost a MUST for the O-line. We all know a successful offense starts with the offensive line.

Andrews is a starter, only missing 2 starts last year due to injury. So yes a long temr deal is a must but disagree that we cant afford to pay him top 5 money...he deserves top five money.

Another waste of 10 Million...just like Justin Smith was last year.

Could have been spent on Albert Haynesworth, Jonathon Vilma, or Asante Samuel....but we have STACEY ANDREWS!!! Yippie!

Chad Johnson, has said repeatedly that he don't know if he is a fit for the Bengals, here is my question we need a kick returner/punt returner why not trade Chad to Miami for a second round draft pick and Ted Ginn Jr. that will address our needs for a kick returner/punt returner.

@jlowe4 -

because trades in the NFL don't work the same as they do in the Madden video game.

Chad is going to screw up our season. There has to be a way to work around the cap hit and get rid of him. I'm so sick of hearing him yap away about how he wants to be somewhere else. Could it be that Chad is the player he is today thanks to the guy that's throwing him the ball?

Haynesworth was franchised and would have had to give up TWO first rd picks, if the Titans WOULD NOT match. Basically, he was not availlable because the Titans would have matched. Vilma???? Damaged goods and hasn't been the same player he was since his rookie season in '04. Samuel.....Eagles OVERPAID greatly for an average DB, where we have four younger and cheaper up and coming players who will be just as good if not better than Asante. And how does signing Samuel help the front 7???

Tagging Andrews was the most logical choice because of his age and abillity to play both G's and T positions, and Willie won't be a starter much longer. A good OL can also be an improvement for our D as well, by keeping drives alive and keeping our D off the field longer.

FA had no stellar guys this season at the positions we needed, DL, and breaking the bank for any of them would have been bad business.

Matt, don't forget that Chad led the AFC in receiving yards with Jon Kitna behind center. Not that I condone his behavior at all, but he IS good...

whodey8188-Samuel a average DB.He's one of the leagues top tier DB's & has the results to back it up.I disagree with you on that point, but do agree we don't need DB's,we have seem to drafted well there already in Hall & Joseph.

Andrews may be the next best thing to Anderson,so keep him around.A good rushing attack is critical for the bengals to have success this next season.

The need for a LB that put's fear in the opposition is still needed.I'm not convinced the LB corps. is anything to write home about & is still suspect.A vet. leader that produces(@LB) would be helpful

And yes of course, the DT has to be addressed. No pressure on the QB ends up another sub-par or mediocore season & making back up QB's look like Joe Montana or Dan Marino.

Bengals spokesman comments-

"Business as Usual,as long as ticket sales are up & the(Fairweather) fans believe MB & company want to win. Then we should keep up the business practices that have helped MB become a leader in the ranks of NFL owners for his shrewd business skills & his will to excel. He his highly respected throughout the league for his clubs excellence".
