Chad will not be at team workouts

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

Chad Johnson’s offseason of discontent could be headed for its first showdown Monday with the Bengals.

And the Bengals wide receiver, in a series of Los Angeles-based television appearances today, said he would not participate in the team’s offseason strength and conditioning program beginning Monday.

"I will not be there," he said during a late afternoon stop at Current TV and Current.com. "There are a lot of issues that need to be dealt with. Nothing has changed."

The Bengals will begin their offseason strength and conditioning program at Paul Brown Stadium. It is not mandatory, though Johnson – who has been a regular attendee every year since drafted by the Bengals in 2001 – can earn a $250,000 workout bonus by participating.

"The sessions are voluntary," Bengals public relations director Jack Brennan said when reached for reaction to Johnson's comments.

"I don’t have any further comment at this time," Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson’s agent, said in text message today to The Enquirer when asked if Johnson would be at the stadium Monday.

Johnson might have dropped a hint about what he intends to do, when he said this morning in an interview on ESPN2, "You know, my offseason for football hasn't started yet. I haven’t started training yet. I am still somewhat enjoying the offseason. You know, I don’t start working out on my own until April."

Largely quiet since the week before the Super Bowl, Johnson appeared Tuesday on ESPN2's "First Take."

Johnson has not spoken to the Cincinnati-based media since October.

Asked several times by “First Take” host Jay Crawford on ESPN2 as to where he might be playing next season, Johnson said, "You know what? I want to continue my career wherever I have an opportunity at winning a playoff game and getting to a Super Bowl. That’s where I want to be."

Then asked if the Bengals were that team, Johnson said, "I’m not sure. I have no idea. … I haven’t made a decision on anything of that nature."

So no idea of where he would like to play in 2008?

"I don’t know," he said. "I am undecided."

Still, the venom of national broadcast and radio interviews in January and February was gone in Johnson's tone. He had said then that he wanted to play somewhere else and said he was unfairly targeted as the primary reason the team struggled to a 7-9 finish, its first sub-.500 season since 2002.

Johnson said he has not spoken to Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis or anyone else in the organization since the end of the season.

Earlier this month, former Bengals defensive lineman Shaun Smith -- during an appearance at a Cleveland Browns Backers meeting in Maryland -- said Johnson punched Lewis at halftime of the Bengals wildcard playoff loss in January 2006.

"It was an incident that did happen," Johnson said on ESPN2. "Of course there were no punches thrown or anything of that nature. I would have been released. I would have been cut, you know, right away.

"I was unhappy about the first half, the way we were playing. We were winning at the time, so I was out of place with my frustration, really, about not being able to held with what we were doing offensively. That was it. Coach Lewis … had to restrain me. (Former Bengals wide receivers coach) Hue Jackson had to restrain me. And that was as far as it went."

No punches?

"Man, please, be for real. No."

Johnson's appearance was designed to promote his role in an Internet drama called "The Rookie," in which he plays a character named Agent Ocho.

"I have always really wanted to act," he said. "It is something I really love besides football and soccer. I am really, really putting my energy into it, and I am starting in these short, short films. … I am a surveillance expert in this one. There are six webisodes, and I am in Webisodes 3 and 4. It is very funny seeing me out of football."

Just another pathetic stab at a dead issue by ESPN. I realize that Chad is probably unsatisfied with what happened last year and the team's status, but I think the constant badgering by ESPN's reporters (none of them have asked the question about where he'll be next year just once) causes him to blow his assertions out of proportion.

Welcome back Chad, we always knew you would come back to your senses and be the Bengal we have come to love. with that said chad, you need to make up with your QB and your coach. we realize last season was frustrating and the media did everything possible to make you out to be the bad guy. But that's Cincinnati for you. Conservitive as hell and they like it that way in Cincinnati. but rest asure the "community" has your back and will continue to have your back aslong as you act accordingly. So lets get back in camp, lead this team back to the playoffs and all will be forgiven. dont worry about the HATERS, they will always be HATERS, what else do they have to bring to the table? That's just the way it is in Cincinnati. i can only imagine the uproar from the right wing sports talk radio media had you had a couple of DUI"s on your recoerd or if you were recovering from a crack addiction. keep it real Chad and get back on the feild. Just play ball, let your performance speak for yourself. That way the haters will have to find something else to HATE ON.

I still have problems with Chad Johnson's comments. The Lombardi Trophy will never read "Ocho Cinco", it will read "Cincinnati Bengals." Up until last year he exemplified a team player but now his comments are those of a selfish receiving diva. I’m beginning to think that T.O. cares more about his team than C.J. His attitude is one of a franchise quarterback and we all know there is no such thing as a franchise receiver.

The Bengals might be very close to messing this up. Chad is a stud, but he NEEDS to be traded. His value is high, and his age and desire to leave Cincinnati will only make his price drop. Our focus should be in winning the Super Bowl sometime between 2009-2011. Chad does not help us achieve that goal as much as 2 good draft picks likely would. It is poison to have the commitment of one of our offensive "leaders" be in doubt.

So it's o.k. if carson Palmer acted the same way as Chad? that's makes alot of sense. Let carson grow and prosper like all the other q.b.'s and not give carson the "sen casey/josh hamilton" treatment. I know we are in cincinnati but damn. let's not "goober" the guy to death. The other players know a fraud when they see and hear one.

I don't blame Chad for being upset at the situation. He's a competitor, who plays hard, and wants to win. You can't ask for anything more, and WE ALL KNOW that Mikey boy hasn't done much to help this team.

WITH THAT BEING SAID: Chad, you make millions of dollars doing something you love to do. SHUT UP AND PLAY! Prove your a bigger man than most of the management on this team.

Come July, everything will be just fine.

Hey Sticks, the community has Chad's back? Are you kidding? He has evolved into a "me first" player! Acting like a spoiled little baby because Palmer might have missed him!! He has failed to understand some of the reasons Palmer missed him, e.g. running for his life, trying to get rid of the ball! Surely he sees this on film. But no, the very next week he comes back to the huddle and pulls the very same stunt!! No QB should have to put up with that kind of crap!! He has cost his team 15 yards for excessive celebrations! The Bengals are losing and CJ jumps into the "Dawg Pound"!! Instead of focusing on the business he is being paid very well to do, he's more focused on "look at me" stunts. CJ is a good WR!! But where is he when it's crunch time in the 4th quarter? Where was he the last 3 or 4 games in 2006 when the Bengals need to win just one more game to get in the playoffs. No where to be found!!He said he wants to be as good as Jerry Rice. He can't hold Rice's jock!! Rice was most dangerous when his team needed him the most. You'll NEVER, EVER get that out of CJ!!! Anyone that takes up for him says he's double teamed. So! The great one's find a way!! Like I said, he's a good WR, not great!! Never will be!! You can call me a HATER if you want. But I'm also a realist!! He is what he is!! A selfish prima-donna!! His "act" has gotten very old! I'd tell the Bengals to get what they can and get THIS CANCER OFF OF THE TEAM!! Why does Rosenhaus' clients act like punks? That's probably another topic. I guess us "HATERS" would like to see production and not some selfish sideshow!!

Hey.... When did Carl Pickens come back to the Bengals?

Chad will also not be at mini camp or training camp. He won't be here for the season either. Chad's basically stated that he'd rather be on NFL Network than play for the Bengals. It no longer matters what the brass wants to do. Chad won't honor his contract, and there's little anyone can do about it. It's clear that his position is to sit out for as long as it takes. His recent tone is intended to facilitate trade dicussions, if that's even possible at this point.

Chad's an ex-Bengal. We're just waiting for the official announcement.

In this case Chad is acting like a child. Marvin just needs to talk to him like he would talk to his 3 year old.

Being a Bengals Fan sure is tough...

I really think that Marvin Lewis and Bengal management should be sitting down and working things out. If you or I had a problem with our bosses at work, isn't that how things usually get resolved? To ignore him, knowing that he's upset, just lets the problem fester. I'm not saying CJ is right or wrong, but, management should at least be communicating with him.

It's hard to play for a perennial loser. It's harder if you're one of the best players. It's hardest if you play for the Cincinnati Bungles. Do you really think Pickens, Scott, Dillon et al would have been so unhappy on a WINNING team? Even Big Willie started to b*tch about the losing afte a while. And he's a perennial optimist.

They're no different than us fans. They hate the ineptitude too. They wanna win, and after 5 or 6 seasons, the handwriting's on the wall. Stay a Bengal and never see the playoffs. Careers flushed down the toilet.

When you're a kid, you're taught to play to win. Losing stinks. Bad teams continue to plague this franchise. It all falls back on the man who runs the show. Once again Mike Brown handles a crisis like it doesn't even exist. No public comments, no outrage at Johnson's antics, no nothin'.Just Bidness as usual. Drive the Lumina down to the stadium and count the money. Damage control? Uhh, let's raise prices, and dabble in free agency. Pull back on that trade, Katie, I wanna read the guideline book. You mean we botched another one, sweetie pie? Gosh, we're Ivy Leaguea round here, how'd that happen?

Chad Johnson is childish, boring, and self absorbed. But he hates losing, which means he still cares about his team. The die is cast. He stays and team chemistry sinks to all time lows. He goes and a struggling offense becomes no offense.

If only Mike Brown the owner would fire Mike Brown the Gm. And blue skies and puppy dog tails and candy cane house.............sigh!

(pan to Judy Garland and her sad eyes)

"Somewhere, over the rainbow......................."

Just a few months ago I stood in line with my sons for hours to get an autographed copy of Chad's book. My feelings for him have not changed. I would suggest to him that he tone down his celebrations and his comments but I will support him whether he does or not.

Michael Strahan made the same comments as Chad, skipped offseason workouts, SKIPPED TRAINING CAMP, and still came back and won a
Super Bowl ring. This is all part of the dance between ownership and players. If the Bengals decide to cut ties with him then they better get good compensation for taking a 8 million dollar cap hit and someone who will keep TJ freed up to make all those catches.

The difference between CJ and Strahan is Strahan is a leader! Did anyone notice after the Super Bowl, Strahan refered to his team as "his team"? "His team is the best." "His" guys are great team-mates!!! The "MAN shows up and leads by example!" I hate ANY team from NY!! But, my friends, give "my man" his due!! Strahan knows what it takes!! CJ DOES NOT!!!!!It's the "Chad Johnson Show!"
Who cares what Stacey Andrews did on "that" play!! Chad let a ball go through his hands and would have scored if he caught the ball!! But he thought he was going to get "drilled!" Why did that happen? Most likely, he was thinking about jumping into the DAWG POUND when his team is down 14 points!! Selfish!! Go ahead and put on that your "HOF" jacket!!

Does anyone know when the deadline is up for Indy to match the offer for Utrecht? Any inkling as to whether or not they will?
