Utecht a Bengal

The Indianapolis Colts intend to let the midnight deadline pass silently, which means restricted tight end Ben Utecht is a Bengal.

The Colts had seven days to match the Bengals' three-year, $9 million offer sheet for Utecht that he signed March 14.

Utecht, who played college ball at the University of Minnesota, will give the Bengals a receiving-oriented tight end for the first time since Marvin Lewis became coach in 2003. Utecht is expected to split time with Reggie Kelly, who is entering the second year of a three-year contract that is essentially worth the same amount as Utecht's new deal.

Awesome move! Our offense just gained a whole new dimension!

Utecht will have a musc bigger impact on the Bengals' offense than most people suspect. He will provide Palmer with the "release valve," missing from the Bengals' offense since Chris Perry went down with injuries in late 2005. Worried about getting burned deep by Chad, T.J. and C. Henry, teams will leave alot of creases open for Utecht to exploit. The Bengals will also be able to use him as a decoy to open up the running game. Linebackers will be less likely to crowd the line when he is in the game. I for one can't wait for Fall to roll around. WHO DEY!!!

A solid pickup. Does this effectively rule out the Bengals picking at a TE on the first day of the draft?

What round of a draft pick do we have to give up for Utecht? He's a RFA, so we have to give up something correct? I haven't seen anyone talk about this.

I would say this guy is easily as good as John Carlson will have be, and we probablly would have had to take him in the second round. I think this could be a huge payoff. Now if we could only get Chad to shut up and pay TJ.

Wow, $3 mil a year is a lot for a backup TE. Even if Utech's not a traditional "backup," Kelly still has to be #1 on the charts, and that was too much cash for Indy to sign a backup TE...on that note, I fully trust Marvin and the Bengals scouts in terms of talent - Sam Adams being overweight and having a bum knee seems to be the only big one they've missed. Perry, Perry (Tab), Irons, Pollack, Thurman, and Henry were all good picks with unfortunate circumstances, and Hall and Joseph are studs-in-the-making. I think we just slipped under the radar and landed ourselves a very nice middle of the field option who will open things up a bit - pair that with Perry's return and Rudi's health, to say nothing of a younger, faster, and hungrier D, and I'm expecting a big year.

He was a restricted free agent but since he was undrafted coming out of college we do not have to send any compinsation to the colts.

There was never a chance of drafting a TE on day one of the draft. Day one is only two rounds beginning this year and no TE is really worth a pick that high in this class.

i think chad is rubbing off on some of the crybaby fans comments. the bengals will have a great year having all the injured players back. seems like chris henry has stayed out of trouble so far this offseason utect and perry will make the double team on tj and cj painful and hopefully the offensive line is healthy, the reason andrews was tagged, you will see two defensive linemen signed in the first 3 rounds there will still be some good ones in rounds 2 and 3 if we miss on the first two. we may trade down and get the running back from ilinois then you may see rudi gone that may bring us another 2nd or 3rd round pick by trading down. we are slowly coping how indy and new england buid their teams a free agent now and then but do not sign average to just better than average players to outlandish contracts then you get the extra picks. does anyone know if we get anything for justin and madieu? i believe we have to get the 90s out our minds and believe they are doing better the injurys of last year would be hard for any team to do better than we did. chad will come aroud his agent did not get paid on his last contract that should help understand where this is comiing from, chad is crying like a little girl this is football get over your feelings getting hurt and be a teamate

We don't have to give up a draft pick b/c Utecht was not drafted. I think that's why...either way, we get him w/o sacrificing anything.

Utecht is a good pick up. All the top teams in the NFL have a play making tight end. Hopefully, Utecht brings that threat to free up TJ, Chad and Chris Henry. Now the bengals need to finish up on defense. They need to pick up a safety and d-tackle so they can pick up some o-lineman early in the draft.

(a) Utecht was undrafted out of college -- so the Bengals don't have to give up a draft pick for him.

(b) The money the Bengals are paying Utecht and Kelly strongly suggests both will be on the field a lot -- remember the old two tight end sets?
