LB Johnson signs one-year contract

Linebacker Brandon Johnson, a former backup with the Arizona Cardinals, has signed a one-year contract with the Bengals, the club announced this afternoon.

Johnson, who is 6 feet, 5 inches and 224 pounds, played college ball at Louisville. He is a third-year NFL player in 2008. He was a fifth-round draft choice of Arizona in 2006 and played the last two seasons for the Cardinals, seeing action in nine games. He has eight career special teams tackles, including six last season, when he saw action in six games.

Johnson’s Arizona contract expired after the 2007 season, and he became a free agent when the signing period began on Feb. 29 with the Cardinals not having made him a tender offer.

He is the second Arizona backup linebacker to sign with the Bengals this month, joining Darryl Blackstock.

This is A HUGE SIGNING!!!!!!! 2 AWESOME LB'S FROM A PROVEN WINNING DEFENSE(Arizona Cardinals).Great Job Bengals.(Kidding for those who think I'm serious)

Bengals spokesman comments-

"MB realizes if you can't beat them, join them. After the Cardinals came to Cincy & beat the Bengals. That was MB 's goal in the offseason. To seek out talent on Defense at 1/2 the cost than the going rate.If the Arizona Cardinals(The Bengals sister team in inept business decisions) can beat Us with lower tier LB's,then we must have them. It's savvy business decisions like this that have helped build MB's success as an NFL owner/GM .His results speak volumes within the ranks of NFL franchises".

hey redlegg:

Cardinals had top 10 D against the run and were ranked 17 overall in total D. Signing players that are better than what we have is called upgrading, no matter what team they come from

Whodey8188-Thanks for the info. How many games did the Cardinal win in the postseason?

My point Exactly.

I have no problem with these two recent LB signings. We always need help on Special Teams plus depth on "D" is fine. Look what happened to our LB's last year!

Getting Ethan Kilmer back from injury will help ST's too. It's all good for now. Yeah, I know, we're still the Bengals but I'll reserve judgement until after the draft.

I can never figure out the "fan" who hates everything the team he supposedly roots for and every word out of his mouth about that team is hatefully negative.

Maybe it's because he thinks he is smarter than the people running that team, which is probably not true, because if he knew that much, he would likely be employed somehow in the industry.

Maybe it's because he just hates everything. I'm leaning toward this choice.

The biggest thing I don't understand is this. If following this team causes you such obvious misery, Mr. Fan, why do you bother.
Unless it's work-related, I avoid things which make me miserable.

I know Mr. Fan will always hide behind this statement:

"I'm a fan. I have a right to say whatever I want."

I won't argue. The team would be nothing without you, right? They owe you, right?

To me, though, there are few things sillier than a "fan" constantly bad-mouthing "their" team. It just makes a guy seem like a fool to me.
But, hey, that's just me. I'm not one of the experts here.

reddlegg, reddlegg what are we going to do with you. You're like that stubborn old man who can't make an argument he just keeps spouting hate. The Bengals made this move not to be cheap or make these two LB starters but to shore up their depth at a position that is lacking. I like you want a stud middle LB to put fear in the qb's eyes but i'd rather get that from the draft or see what Jones or Thurman can do this year than to overpay for someone that won't produce. Really after Suggs was tagged what great LB's were left out there.

Well I sure don't want to sound like I am being negative about my team. Wow, that would be just awful in America now. I guess I will say yeah, yee-haw when they do anything, even if it means loosing again.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That is what being a fan is all about. As far as being negative about what they have done....well.... everything they have done is negative, except resigning Dhani Jones.

Also about upgrading from a different team no matter what team.....This guy has 8 CAREER S.T TACKLES....8....Come on, the dag gone kicker on a team records more than that!!!!!

Before you can add depth on a defense, you have to have a DEFENSE. Quit drinking the Mike Brown cool-aid!

? 4 u redlegg...so now we shouldn't sign anyone who hasn't played in the postseason????

Probably 90% of America could run the Bengals better than they are currently being run! One winning season in 17 years says it all.

This recent LB signing says everything about the Bengals scouting process. A lot of the games scouted are within driving distance. That is one of the reasons the Bengals make most of thier first round picks out of the Big 10. This recent LB is from Louisville (100 miles away)

It's a cheap and funny way to do business, and the results are guarenteed.

And by the way, I have been a fan since 1981 and a season ticket holder since 2000. I have no idea why I still support the Bengals, they have done nothing to earn my support.

i agree some of the so called fans need somwthing in their life that would cause some joy the bengals are not getting it done for them. become cleveland or pittsburg fans if you do not understand football any better than some of the stupid blogs especially the ones on the d tackles you should be happy they did not get these done the tackle from the jets, denver did not even want him because of his knees. i am a season ticket holder and feel lucky to have a nfl team to follow to be able to see some of the best players. we had an unusual amount of players injured very early last year lose your linebackers have both offensive tackles injured, your running back injured, having a rookie corner, a second year corner on the other side you become very predictable for other teams to defence you basically had 2 options tj, and cj very easy to defence. having all these draft picks wait and see before becoming so negitive or become a browns fan

Carl,

I don't want to flame you, but I think there is a huge difference in being disgusted with management and the apparent lack of concern to do next to nothing to improve a terrible defense and not supporting the team.

I love the Bengals, as I'm sure reddlegg does, but our owner is, and has been, the butt of nearly every joke in the NFL for nearly 2 decades running. Most fans are simply weary of moves like this. They wreak of cheap and useless. It's what we're used to and we're not surprised, but it's still frustrating.

I agree with you, some do take it too far with their rhetoric. I do, however, understand it. It has nothing to do with the players and everything to do with MB.

Reddlegg, do you really think Mike Brown and Company are reading this blog? If you have something to say to them, SAY IT TO THEM! You are not improving the Bengals team by trashing them on this blog that they couldn't care less about...

Wow,I'm gone for a few days & I come back to the word Hate(With my handle) being thrown around.

Please Folks,It's sports not war.I have never used the word hate, toward anyone.Distrubed & disgruntled, I have.Hate is a very negative word. Please lets refrain from going there.

I Hate Nobody,ok.I may not like something's or some people, but Hate, NO.Come on people.

For the record,I 'm a very happy person.I just think MB is a clown & he makes bad, cheap, inept business decisions, that affect his pocket book for profit & he leaves Cincinnati in the dust.If he was so great then why did the City want to sue him(& followed through),for lack of following through on his commitment of putting together a winning team.

It was the long years of the 90's & the early 00's that hurt the worst. To say there was no damage done in the relations of this franchise & city, would be a lie.I still haven't forgot those days & forgive NO I do not. There's no excuse for what he did to this city.

I want results & want them NOW.I'm tired of MB & how he runs this team.If I wanna complain about MB,I have that right.AM i putting anyone else down,NO.I am a die hard bengals fan, through family tradition & Hometown pride.Just because I don't like the owner & his offseason moves, does not mean I don't love my hometown football team.

The spokesman comments are funny & keep things light,it's my way of communicating that I think MB is a joke.If you don't like it,don't read it.

I also wanna thank Mark, Paul D, & Lonnie W. for all their info.If it wasn't for these guys,we the fans would be drinking whatever MB & Co give us.Geofff H. from Bengals.com does not give accurate info & it's biased.I wonder why?

Whodey8188-

Veteran LB's that have postseaon experience would be great. If we are trying to win & make the playoffs then we shouild have personnel that can handle that kind of pressure. That's my point.

mindriot25-

Stubborn yes,old no.Glad to see you agree with my point of wanting a stud LB that put's fear in the opposition.Funny how you contradict yourself in that same paragraph. If no FA's are to be found you make a trade.Wait MB & CO. tried that already,it doesn't work. They don't understand the buercacy of the NFL of today. Can you say out of touch. The scouting team is a joke & so is 1 winning season out of 18.

I didn't mean to contradict myself in saying that there were not any good FA LB. I agree that should have tossed out some picks to get one, but that LB that puts fear in the opposing QB and RB isn't available via trade. I'd give up Chad and a 1st round pick for Suggs but the ravens won't trade him. Same with Seattle's whose name escapes me right now.
I'm not happy with how MB handles business but in some ways I'd rather have him than Snyder who overpays and ends up in the same spot as us.
