Lewis on NFL TV: Chad a Bengal

A transcript of an interview Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis did Monday on NFL Network, the league's in-house TV channel:

(Host) Rich Eisen: Last week, Chad Johnson was a guest of our program and once again making it well known that he feels unappreciated in Cincinnati and wants to go somewhere else. It appears from the outside that differences seem irreconcilable – how is it from the inside?

Marvin Lewis: There really are no differences because if Chad wants the opportunity to play professional football, this is his opportunity right now to play here in Cincinnati. Despite his feelings and whatever he says when he comes on your show, he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. He signed a contract, which is a very long-term contract, he’s been very well compensated since 2003 under two different contract since then. So that’s the case right now. He’s got an opportunity to play professional football here or do what he says he’s thought about doing, which is sit out and that’s fine. Our football team will move on and be ready to go just as we would if someone got injured. You talk to your team all the time about being one play from being injured and without a certain player and if that the case, we’ll be fine and move on.

(Co-host) Solomon Wilcots: We’d heard Chad linked to a number of teams, at least that he’s talked about, from the Miami Dolphins to the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys…

Lewis: He’s linking himself, because that would be tampering.

Wilcots: But from the Bengals’ perspective are you willing to part (with Johnson), would you listen to other teams’ if they were interested in Chad?

Lewis: No, we are not going to trade Chad Johnson as I’ve said. We’re not going to trade Chad, I’ve made it clear and our owner has made it clear. Like I said earlier, if he’s going to play professional football, he’s going to do it in Cincinnati.

Eisen: He’s been dancing around the concept that he’s unappreciated there in Cincinnati and that he feels as if he’s been treated like a cancer of the team. Where would he get that idea from?

Lewis: I don’t know. I can’t take the heat on both sides of the coin here, because at some point last year people said I don’t do a very good job and I enable Chad, so I can’t be on one side with him, then on the other side with him. I coach Chad, I love Chad as a player and as a person and want the very best things for Chad.

Eisen: So coach, what is the issue that you’re facing right now?

Lewis: There really is no issue, Rich. There’s two choices. I think Kobe Bryant went through a little of this in the offseason. The Lakers said you’re going to be a Laker and he said, well let’s play and let’s go to the playoffs. Kobe has led his team to the playoffs and I think that’s what Chad has an opportunity to do. To stay on the positive and get things right. If indeed the things that he says and tells people that I hear and read about going to the playoffs and winning a playoff game, those are right in line with our goals. So he needs to do his part, put the team on his back and go to work.

i've always thought (since last year when all this started) that it has been the national media's fault for why chad feels "unloved" they kept giving him sh*t for his touchdown dances and all that stuff and then when he was getting in the endzone they started ripping him. the main reason we had a bad season last year was b/c the D was terrible! we had a rookie and a 2nd year for corners, every linebacker got hurt, and we've never been good against the run. that is why the team sucked last year, not cuz chad was dancing too much or talking too much. I BLAME ESPN AND ALL OTHER NATIONAL MEDIA OUTLETS. granted chad took it WAY to personal and probably did a little too much behaving like a 4yr old who didn't get new toy they wanted. but no one in cincy hated chad or thought he was a "cancer". but unfortunately that may be changing with all his whining and complaining this offseason. like ML said he is under contract with the bengals and if he wants to play football this year he can do it with the bengals.

I am sure it is just me but i think Marvin handled that pretty well. I do want chad to come back. I think the Kobe comparison is a great comparison. Granted i dont think one player who is only involved in a small percentage of one side of the ball can really carry a team on his back but i think we get the idea. If we sit him then that works as well. Keeping a threat off of the competitions hands is an advantage as well. unfurtunatetly Chad does need to shut up at this point. With the loss of talent and the cap hit we would take... i cant see any trade or release happening any time soon. I tell you what, If Chad shuts his mouth, plays the best he can, and contributes to team ball, and provides the TEAM with an honest desire to win in Cincinnati not only by his word and action off the field, but on it as well... maybe we will give him a high five (hey i only get compliments for doing my job as well -especially after i just got a raise).

I agree with the whining part. He's setting himself up for a long fall with the fans. I don't blame him for last year's team record. Not in anyway, but... he needs to shut his mouth. Drew Rosenhaus is the cancer and the bigger problem here. It seems like every player he has behaves this way. All this crap is about money. His contract was front loaded and now he's looking at years with not as much money. These players making 7 figures and crying about not being appreciated. Try living on a preachers salary dude. Then we'll talk about appreciation.

I applaud the Bengals and Coach for sticking to their guns. This boils down to one thing.... MONEY.... Chad wants a new contract. The Bengals got the contract right for once with Chad.

Look at the contract for wideouts recently and Chad is a deal for his talent.

For Chad's part, he is a selfish immature player that quits on games and I'd like to see him ride the bench.
The unfortunate truth is that at some point the Bengals will deal him to get rid of the headache.

chads agent has corupted him rosenhaus is poison to players and to their teams. rosenhaus just wants paid he did not get his cut last time. chad needs to think about how he is percieved after his playing days are over. if he sits out he can forget getting that jacket he wore last year. we can make it without him. its ironic he does not ever consider having carson throwing him the ball is part of his success. i also think other recievers getting attention also bothers him he has to have all of the attention all of the time lets hope he finds his way. we will not boo chad but will have trouble cheering him unless he realizes it is a team game not an i or me game. i watched the intervew i wonder he said me and i and he also alks in the third person which is not good

HAHA Chad Johnson just got had. I'd love nothing more than to see the Bengals go to the Super Bowl without him.

The bengals are not in the position to have Chad sit out the year. Lewis' talk about the team adjusting and moving on as a team is nice in theory, but you're losing the biggest playmaker on the team. The Bengals have too few playmakers to afford this luxury. Unfortunately, given what happened with Corey Dillon and Jeff Blake to a lesser extent, what i can very well see happening is that they let the Chad situation continue to fester, he ends up sitting out, then they finally trade him after this season but for a much lower value than what they would get if they traded him now. Wake up Mike and Marvin, quit being so stubborn. It's not about letting Chad have his way, it's about getting value while you still can. Mark my words, this will end up being another case of personnel mismanagement 101, authored by Mike Brown.

Good job by Lewis, and brilliant from a public relations standpoint. Put the responsibility on Chad's shoulders and make him accountable for his own actions and his desire to dishonor the generous contracts from the Bengals.

Chad really has no options other than to either play or sit.

Chad wants to come to a winner. And in Dallas, WINNING COMES ABOVE ALL ELSE. If he were really not a team player, why would he link himself to a team where he would certainly be the #2??? Chad wants the kind of jewelery that money can't buy. And thats a superbowl ring baby. I say let the guy leave, get yourself some extra draft picks, and be glad that TJ still wants to be in town. Lets face it, the bengals dont have a superbowl for a reason. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!! Not Heiseman winning quarterbacks. Until they fix that problem, there will be no world championship parade in the Nati. Send Chad to Dallas and enjoy the draft gentlemen. GO COWBOYS!!!!!!

4pm and 1:28am both got it right.
1:35 am dream on.
I wouldn't have the patience to do the right thing and keep him though.

I would like to send him to Oakland for 3 or 4 3rd round picks.
He would just fade away because age is about to catch up with him anyway.

I think Marvin did a great job of speaking with the media and expressing his point.

His next step is speaking with Chad and getting everything straightened out. Chad just needs an ego boost from the coach. (most players don't need it, but Chad does)

just dawned on me...potential of TO and Chad on the same team. Now just bring Keyshsawn out of retirement (cousin connection)...Wow, we would never get any real sports updates during the football season..add Romo into the mix...next stop, daytime television, somewhere between the guiding light and bold and the beautiful. Jerry Jones can play Dr. Nick Galobpolus, respected plastic surgeon.

Seriously, don't care anymore, just wish he would shut up and in my opinion Marvin handled it perfectly.

Is anybody else wondering why a cowboys fan is posting comments on a bengals blog? I am actually curious as to how many people go on to other teams web site and post comments on their situations? Im not saying its a bad thing, i am just curious. (though, i dont see the relationship between the bengals and the cowboys [that would make somebody want to comment with us)

Palmer will be MVP (just sayin)

You guys all need to start thinking clearly.

Chad will either play out his contract in Cincinnati or he'll ride the bench for the rest of his contract in Cincinnati. MB spent the heavy money on him, now he wants the return on investment. If Chad doesn't want to give that ROI, Mike Brown will let him sit and ruin his future prospects. MB doesn't care if Chad wants to ruin his career. Do you think Chad will ever sign another big money contract after a few years of riding the bench? His playing years will be used up and he will have been forgotten.

Why would an owner who has proven himself to be the most stubborn owner in the league give in to a player? Mike Brown holds the cards and will eat Chad's salary to prove that point and keep these stunts from happening in the future.

This is the only time I've ever agreed with Mike Brown. Stick to your guns and don't give in to the athletes who think they can manipulate the owners and the contracts to get whatever they want.

For the first time in the past three years I have that "In Marvin I trust" feeling again. That is how a Leader and a Professional should respond to whining!!!! You go MARV!!! Now keep everyone out of the police blotter and maybe we can get back to the playoffs.
AS for Chad....I am not drinking the Kool-Aid. You want to bring the fans happiness.....show up work harder than everyone else and keep all this negative B.S. away from the Bengals! He MAY not have been the cancer before.....but he is beginning to get really annoying right now!

CAN WE TALK ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN CHAD BEING A LITTLE BABY. EVERYONE IN CINCY KNOWS THIS, OLD NEWS! How are they player AT the voluntary workouts looking? how does Rudi look? what kinda of stuff are they doing? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ANYTHING BESIDES CHAD CONTINUING TO ACT LIKE A 4YR OLD!!!

The Kobe Bryant comparison is very generous to Chad. I think Kobe is much more important to his team's success. But I know that wasn't Marvin's point.

Greg, if Chad sits out, the Bengals don't have to pay him (in effect), because he would be fined for every missed activity and game.

chad is a good receiver but... he has only scored in 8 of the last 32games. he doesn't do much accross the middle (except cough up footballs). he gets shut down in the big games and blames it on double teaming. yards after catch are nonexistent..... when they only needed 1 game out of the last 3 to make playoffs, he was shut down for those games. he fumbles on end arounds. he catches the ball with no body control and is often lying on the ground (or diving) when he catches the ball.

"hey hey redlegs", I COMPLETELY AGREE. BUT, cincy as a whole is to blame as well.

I'm not going to kiss up to chad and say he had a great season or even say that he played well. he didn't. regardless of the stats, he had a bad year. indeed the media is to blame, but speaking from first hand experience, quite a few bengals fans started saying "get rid of him" before he even said the infamous "if i'm the problem, trade me" speech. Lets not forget also, Chad only thinks his teammates consider him a problem because when the media started saying such, no one in the bengals club refuted. i'm just trying to get people to look from his perspective. i'm not sticking up for him. he's a grown man who 1. shouldn't be letting something as stupid as the media get to him and 2. shouldn't need his teammates to speak up for him when it comes to a sports caster's mudslinging.

The moral of the story is this, Chad, they get paid to criticize players. you get paid to catch a ball and get in the end zone. so quit looking for a way out because you don't have one. shut up, play ball, and you'll get your super bowl ring here if you pull your own weight. most likely not next season. or the season after that. but if you work at it and push everyone around you, it will happen. end of story.

peace reddlegg i was just messng with you sorry you are so frustrated but i do believe the baby backers of the bengals will grow up this year and the samions have beefed way up both will play large the two young corners will also improve along with the young safeties also with some d linemen in the draft. if we do not get the top 4 d linemen we should trade down take mendenhall cut rudy take one of the draft picks you recieved when you traded down along with your 2nd round pick take the reciever from indiana then get 2 d tackels in the 2nd and 3rd round i know it is far fetched. i do believe you are a true fan reddlegg if you come back i can get you a couple tickets to a game if you give me advanced notice.

2) Chad, everyone but you knows >> your agent steered you down a dead-end road. Dump him tomorrow.

Cheers!
