Bengals keep talking privately

Free agent wide receiver Tab Perry, who was not offered a qualifying contract as a restricted free agent by the Bengals last week, already has visited the Miami Dolphins. Baltimore and Green Bay are interested, as well.

The door remains open with the Bengals for Perry. Another conversation is scheduled for later today.

In addition, the agent for 338-pound free agent defensive tackle Ethan Kelley said his client had a good visit with the Bengals.

"Ethan enjoyed his visit," Neil Cornrich of NC Sports said today. "Obviously, for a visit to be scheduled, there is mutual interest. There is interest in Ethan throughout the league."

Kelley, 28, had 24 total tackles, including one sack, last season for the Browns in 13 games.

John Thornton, 2007 season, 32 tackles, one sack. What's the point of going for Kelly then? Cheaper? Same deffense next season then.

anonymous 2:44???

What is your point did they cut Thornton? No so they are adding a player not replaceing one...

If you pay attion you will see they are trying to add depth to the teams D-line.

anon 2:44...the difference between thornton and kelly is that thornton is undersized and gets pushed off the ball so guards and centers can block the second level...at 338lbs kelly at least takes up space and demands a double team now and then...DT is one of the few postions on defense that the stats really do not tell the whole story

While they didn't cut Thornton, they did let Justin Smith walk so all they are really doing is replacing Smith with Odom (although I believe Odom is a better player). They haven't added any depth to the D-Line yet. My hope is that they will spend at least the first 2 rounds of the draft on that.

Get Thornton out. He's overpaid for what he actually does.

That being said, it doesn't make too much sense to cut him until we land a Dewayne Robertson or trade up in the draft to get Ellis and Dorsey...which by the way, we should absolutely do with our 11-12 draft picks this year.

odom is not better then smith. That comment was ignorant. Do any of you watch football? McCree? Are you joking? He is worse then dexter Jackson. Its like 10 year old children posting on here

To Anonomous who said Justin Smith is better than Odom, it is he who is ignorant. For $8 million he gave us 2 sacks. From the 7th or so game in 2006 he had another couple of sacks. Over his career he averaged all of 4 tackles a game -- most 3 or so yards down the line of scrimmage. As stated in the Steeler game, whenever they needed a big play they went to the left side -- Smith's side. Showing up ain't enough. You got to make plays and he did not.

to anonymous at 7:26....

yeah, i'm sure odom will have a hard time surpassing smiths whopping sack total of 2.

do you even watch football??? justin smith has one move, and other than that did nothing but make tackles 8 yards downfield.

they upgraded and landed a younger guy with more physical tools and upside for less money...not to mention a guy that one reporter in tennessee dubbed "the best athlete on the team...period." which of course is a good compliment considering the team has vince young, one of the best athletes in the league.

Mark, what is the status of Kenny Irons. Will he be at full strength for training camp? How does he look? Will we get our money's worth? Please do an article about this.

I hope the don't Bungal and lose Landon Johnson. Are they even making an effort to resign him? They need to some how work a trade before or on draft day to at least move up in the draft above the NY Jets. Get Ellis, Gholston (excuse my spelling) or Dorsey.

odom had 21 tackles in 16 games. This is like one year where smith had 2 sacks and not around 7. Ignorant cincinnati sports fan. Odom had haynesworth and van Bosch or whatever his name is to help him. Smith had Schlegel and .... Oh yeah no one. Get a clue and stop drinking the Koop aid. In pretty sure smith had like 103 tackles in 16 games which would be more then 3 tackles a game. Do you know math. Your prolly one of those intelligent people that thought it would be a good idea to trade our best reciever for nothing. Ignorant fool

Justin Smith is not nearly as good as some fans try to make him out to be.

Justin Smith was not worth the money he received nor the franchise tag that we gave him last year. This doesn't mean he is a terrible football player just that he was overpaid. Given his lack of sacks, he was replaceable for a lower cost.

I will say this. I think Odom has promise but unless we get him a difference making D-tackle to play next to him, he's going to face the same double teams Smith faced and struggle. If we can't get Robertson (which it looks like it won't happen), trade up in the draft using our excess picks to snag Ellis or Dorsey. We are one strong D-tackle away from making the entire front seven better.

Oh yeah...and once we get that tackle, cut Thornton.
