Robertson agent: Contract the issue

Agent Hadley Engelhard spoke Monday night to the New York Daily News about the proposed trade of Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Bengals for two draft picks. And Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum was available to reporters that cover the team on a conference call.

"Obviously, we were close," Tannenbaum said.

The Bengals agreed to trade fourth- and fifth-round picks to the Jets, the best deal the team had received for Robertson. He was in Cincinnati on Monday for a physical and to meet with the Bengals, Engelhard told The Daily News.

The sticking point was reworking Robertson's contract, which calls for base salaries totaling $18.8 million over the next two seasons.

"We couldn't come to terms, plain and simple," the agent told The Daily News.

According to the paper, Robertson had surgery on a broken hand recently, which did not worry the Bengals, Engelhard said. But the Bengals might have been wary of a bone-on-bone condition in Robertson's knee, the agent said.

why am i not surprised? the Bengals need a dominating DT, yet they refuse to pay top dollars for one of the NFL's best. figures.

It's amazing the Bengals sign another ok defensive end in Odom from Tennessee to fill Smith's departure & they still won't sign at the position where they need it the most Defensive Tackle. Our linebacker's won't be able to run the field if we don't have the the defensive tackles keeping the guards on tackles off of them. Smith didn't work so why do they think Odom is going to all of a sudden change the whole line. Peko is average but the other DT's are terrible. Pay Robertson we need is expertise.

No sense in trading two picks for a guy that is not willing to renegotiate. The Bengals could probably take two DTs in the fourth and fifth rounders and one of them would be better than Robertson for a lot less money.

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see Robertson play for the Bengals. But for that kind of money, no way.

hey 8:06 AM, obviously, the BENGALS wanted both Rogers and Robertson, so who is the fool really? Fairweather fans? Are you high???? This town has been more than patient, and way more forgiving than any organization has a right to expect. Injuries???? you don't think those happen to other teams too? Look at the number of players that we drafted during Marvin's "era" that don't play here any more. The results are not pretty. But then, MB would argue that they draft just as many players as the other teams do, so that makes the Bengals pretty successful at drafting. (rolls eyes)

Give it a rest. This guy is an overpaid bum. 10 million a year for this guy is laughable. Haynesworth doesn't get that. You guys are idiots.

What has Robertson done so far in the NFL? Enough to justify that kind of $. Look if he would have redone the deal for 4-5mil a yr I'd say take a flyer on him but not for almost 10mil a yr! Don't forget Manngini didn't draft him and he never did much in the 4-3 in the NFL either under Herm Edwards. He is not just in the wrong system, he is just not that good! The truth is Rogers may have had issues but he was a much better and dominant player than Robertson ever has been.

You people do realize that Robertson rides the bench in New York, and wasn't all that successful in the 4-3 there either, right? He's not the second coming of Jesus. And given how little Lewis has gotten out of anybody on the defense, I'm not sure he's the guy to motivate a bust.

Building through the draft hasn't worked in Marvin's first five years why will this year be different. They are putting the same team back on the field that is nothing more than average. Marvin isn't a good motivator & he hasn't made the right moves in pushing this team to the next level. Same team in 08 as 07 same results will occur. Another sad day in Bengledom.

Robertson isnt top shelf material. Thats why you dont want to pay him nine million. He will rework the deal or find himself cut come june.

Dominating DT? Robertson? Can you honestly say, when looking at his stats, that he is $18m (for two seasons, mind you) worth of dominating? Seriously, if this guy won't redo his contract we are better off using a combination of these picks or others to move up and get ellis or dorsey (if they do not fall to #9).

You can't pay a guy with that productivity $18M over two years. He is a good, not great, 4-3 tackle and most importantly, a good person and good teammate. He works hard to be ready to play and works hard during the play. He is also a little different than most of the tackle types that everyone seems to covet in that he thrives more in a single gap role where he can penetrate, rather than two gap and occupy blockers. I was suprised to see the Bengals intrest at first, but that type of lineman can be a great asset if utilized properly and the possibilities intrigued me. However, though I like Robertson, I can't justify $18M in two years. For that kind of money I have to have a young, healthy, dominant interior lineman.
I don't blame the Jets for trying to rid themselves of that bad contract. I also don't blame Robertson for not wanting to give up that contract.
The good news here folks is that the Jets may have to rethink their position and Robertson may be a free agent in June. Robertson then may find that he has to play for less and he knows That Cincinnati is an option.
