Potential trade for DT Robertson

Talks continue between the Bengals and the agent for Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson on a trade that would bring the former University of Kentucky star to Cincinnati in exchange for the Bengals' fourth- and fifth-round picks (Nos. 114 and 151) in April's draft, according to ESPN.com.

A source this morning confirmed that talks were held Saturday and Sunday between the team and agent Hadley Engelhard. The Bengals are expecting to receive three or four compensatory picks from the NFL, which can't be traded, because of free agent losses in 2007. One of the picks might be as high as the third round.

Robertson is a 310-pound tackle that has not fit well into coach Eric Mangini's 3-4 scheme with the Jets. But sources close to the Jets say Robertson, described as a quiet personality, would thrive in a 4-3 set in which he was not always double-teamed by the center and a guard.

The Bengals are considering a switch to the 3-4 defense, but the best fit of personnel will be the ultimate factor in whether a change in the base defense is made. The Bengals did have a visit Sunday with Antwan Odom, a pure 4-3 defensive end and Tennessee Titans unrestricted free agent.

He was the fourth overall pick by the Jets out of UK in 2003. He is a five-year veteran but won't turn 27 until Oct. 16. He has two years remaining on his contract, which is due to pay him a $9.8 million base in 2008, The Newark Star-Ledger reported this morning. The paper reported that the Jets are intensifying efforts to trade Robertson to clear salary cap space.

Any trade would require a new contract and for Robertson to pass a physical.

The Bengals had no official comment on the possible trade this morning.

Despite the near-miss in the trade for tackle Shaun Rogers with the Lions on Friday, the Bengals clearly are attempting to upgrade their defensive line. Odom had eight sacks last season for the Titans.

The Bengals did lose longtime starter Justin Smith, an end, to the 49ers over the weekend as a free agent.

This Deal would be alot better Robertson is a hard worker and he is only 26. this will make me forget the Rodgers mess.

The good thing about Robertson is that he is not a character risk.

"The good thing about Robertson is that he is not a character risk."

Or have weight and motivation issues. Lions fans nicknamed Rogers "part time."

Rogers has more upside, but Robertson is still very good, younger and comes with much less risk...

If the Bengals land Robertson and Odom it will be a HUGE UPGRADE along the D-line...Personally, I'll take these guys over the deal with Rogers any day of the week...They're young, hungry and have no baggage...Exactly what the Bengals need...

I think this trade for Robertson is a good step in the right direction for the Bengals. They say some trades are better when not done and I think the S. Rogers trade is a perfect example for a couple of reasons.

1. the browns gave up their best CB and he had Carson Palmer's number.

2. The bengals didnt give up their 3rd round pick.

3. Dewayne is younger and will fit the 4-3 scheme better than Rogers.

Plus, the Bengals better get him re-signed b/c if this trade goes BUST, Mike Brown better run for the hills!

FOR 3!

Rogers was much more of a high-risk, high-reward trade than this one. Robertson, although unspectacular, gives the Bengals more beef for an undersized D-line. He sounds like a good DT in a 4-3 scheme. A rotation of Thornton, Peko, Myers and Robertson is about average. Rogers has character and motivation issues and I am hard pressed to remember when a guy like that worked out in the Bengals favor.

While the upside with Robertson is that he doesn't have character issues, the downside is that he's simply not that good. I hope he get his career on track here, but forgive me for not holding my breath on this one.

i'll believe it when he is wearing a Bengals lid and sitting on a podium at a Bengals press conference.

until then, i just sit here and wait for Mikey to botch yet another move.

our in-state rivals continue to get better and better, and the bengals family reunion, er, front office will just sit on their hands counting their money.

ridiculous.

Peter King reports the deal for Rodgers fell through because the
Brown/Blackwell brain trust would not kick in another $1 million for a bonus Shaun deserved. Now the Bungles will get a first-round bust/cull from the Jets. But he will be cheaper which is all that matters.

i am so tired of the same BS each and every year... the coaching staff has no clue on what defense they are going to run... this organization is the biggest joke, i am truly tired... i think they are settling for robertson to cover-up the cheapness that they showed in blowing the rogers deal... next, the headlines will read how the re-sign caleb miller, and let odom go somewhere else...

Rogers was going to be a roll of the dice. He'll probably be good for one year, while he tries to prove himself, but who knows after that. Plus, he is the type of player that if the team starts to lose, he gives up. Throw in his knee troubles and potential for character problems and that fact that he will be suspended for a whole season if caught with another banned substance.

I think Rogers would have been nice to have since the D-line needs an upgrade, but Robertson will work out fine. If the Bengals land Robertson, they will need to stick with the 4-3. I would also hope that they would agressively seek Odom or perhaps Gholston in the draft.

Mangenius wasn't so genius when he took players that fit better in the 4-3 and played with the 3-4. Robertson and Vilma clearly suffered through the transition.

The Browns sure have had an agressive free agent period. Signing Anderon, trading for Rogers, signing Stallworth ... it will be interesting to see if everything works out for them. I wonder if they will run into a salary cap crunch when Winslow and Edwards ask for raises.

Anon 11:36 - Peter King is wrong and will do anything to slam Mike Brown. He has a personal vendetta against him from his days reporting on the Bengals for the Enquirer.

The Bengals were willing to pay the bonus but the league wouldn't let them due to a technicality in the paperwork which Detroit submitted.

Robertson is a better player anyhow. There's a reason Rogers' nickname in Detroit was Big Baby.

Regarding the blown deal with Shawn Rogers, Peter King said the Bengals refused to pay the 1M roster bonus (due immediately), but on Sunday sports talk w/ Ken Broo, Chick Ludwig from the Dayton Daily News didn't have official comment from the Bengals front office, but it sounded like it could have been an issue with the Lions salary cap, not the Bengals. They are way under and paying the money I can't see as being the issue. What concerns me is that but it sounded like they didn't consult with the NFL league offices before submitting the trade...which is a huge blunder. All the teams consult with the NFL first to be sure it works (that they will likely approve the trade), then its either a go or no go decision by the two teams. So in that regard, they failed but the real reason may not be due to the Bengals being unwilling to pay. Also, I wonder could the Browns have made their offer before the Bengals deal was complete? Maybe they found a reason (Leigh Bodden & 3rd rounder) to back out at the last minute versus having to go with the lesser value (3rd & 5th round picks from Bengals)? Or is this illegal in the NFL?

Mark, any updates or insight on this matter? All of Bengaldom really hopes that its not another case of the front office being cheap and/or inept. Given the track record though...

We have to make the Robertson and Odom deals go through by the way if we are to have a chance this year. Hobson says you don't get the Lombardi trophy by making the biggest splash in free agency, but look at it this way. We were bad on defense last year, and lost 2 of our better performers (Smith, Williams). How exactly were we going to be better this year?

Smith and Williams were not two of the better defensive players last year.
Landon Johnson, Dhani Jones, Robert Geathers, Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall all played better. If anything, Landon needs to be the one the Bengals make sure to sign. Smith and Williams are nice guys and decent players, but simply not worth the money they are going to be paid.

How about the Bengals sign Randy Moss and trade Chad Johnson to the Dolphins for Jason Taylor and their second round pick?
