Sources: Robertson trade off

Foxsports.com is reporting that the Dewayne Robertson trade from the Jets to the Bengals is off. It did not name a source. A phone message and e-mail to agent Hadley Engelhard have not been returned.

Another source close to the situation told The Enquirer late this afternoon that Robertson, who was believed to be in Cincinnati today, does not want to re-negotiate the final two years of his contract.

And why would he?

He is due to make base salaries of $9.8 million in 2008 and $8.29 million in 2009, according to the New York Daily News.

The Bengals have no comment.

Also late today, the agent for Colts free agent tight end Ben Utecht said his client will visit the Bengals on Thursday.

I checked on Dewayne Robertson and he has a bone on bone condition in his knee.

The Bengals will end up still using the 4-3 most of the time by default.
By de fault of their inability to pay and entice new players for their reported plan to play the 3-4.

Not a shock. The Bengals are so cheap its almost comical. Please Mikey sell the team. Please I beg you.

I'm not sure I see a compelling reason to continue to invest emotionally in an organization that has consistently been managed with less passion and intelligence than the average NFL team. Even as I try to care less, I'm depressed by the reality of how this franchise has been managed under Mike Brown. It would be one thing to be able to call them a "hard luck" franchise, but the facts are that they are poorly run and financially non-competitive.

If you check the posting on foxsports.com it was 8:03 this morning. how acurate is it when every other source, espn included, is still reporting that it is going to happen.

Bet they trade him to Denver after Denver's DT just got busted for a long list of offenses. Bet Denver offers at least a third and fifth round pick.

Great news. The Bungles continue to get nobody. Spend your money on UC football Season tickets.

He will be a Bronco by midnight. Mikey and company are a sad excuse for a front office.

Even though the foxsports article says 8:03am, it was posted this evening via a phone update

My question is this, why make a trade for him and get him in town if you know already that he is not willing to renegotiate? Obviously they had no idea. How could you not know that he was not going to renegotiate his contract? Why go through all of this mess? Stupidity!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys this one time I am not too upset. 18 million dollars over two years for an underachiever? That makes less sense than giving Justin Smith big money. This guy is nothing special. If he were special the Jets would not be dumping their number 4 draft pick. I would rather have Kentwan Balmer or even Trevor Laws in the upcoming draft, than this bum. Now if we don't address the line in the draft, lets get upset.

Yep another tease.. sure makes me want to give Mike Brown my good hard earned dollars..NOT!!!!
Good luck Bengal fans. this joke of a ownership will NEVER see the post season again.. 2005 was luck and this ownership doesnt take the next step to help this team get to the playoffs..NEVER again with Mike Brown.. save your season ticket money and go watch the Reds, UC Football and forget this idiots.. NFL knows the Bengal fans are loyal.. Mike Brown isnt!!

watch him end up in Cleveland... the new team i am going to follow.. not waste anymore emotion on Mike Browns garbage... Chad should have came out and asked for a trade based on Mike Brown never wanting to Win!! he would be loved and had a huge backing then..and fans woudl have really been on his side

you know nothing shocks me anymore when it comes to the bengals, they sit idoly by in the offseason so they sit idoly by during the season. This team lacks passion both on the roster and the front office, i feel so bad for Marvin

No Surprise! I don't have anymore to say! This has went from comical to just plain SAD!!! OFCOURSE this guy isn't going to renegotiate, why would he. Would you do a deal to STAY in Cincy and play for a sub 500 team and the Browns' as your owner. NO WAY!!!! He will play his contract out and go onto the market and sign with a real team, just like everyone else does. NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY FOR MIKE BROWN, PERIOD! He has made this team a proven LOSER, and every player in the draft right now is hoping they don't get selected by Cincy. Just Horrible....

I have a bad feeling Mikey Boy will live to be 100 years old.. get comfortable people we are still in the early years of The Mike Brown era

imagine that...

this organization is a joke, quite possibly the worst ran team in the history of professional sports...which would also be the only title Mike Brown will ever be able to lay claim to.

how anyone can defend this incompetent group of people is just flat out beyond comprehension to me.

as usual, this team does nothing during the offseason but make excuses for the past seasons play, watch on as nothing but on-lookers during free agency, draft poorly and pin their hopes that things will turn out differently the next season. what a joke.

Cheap, stupid...what??$9.8 million in 2008 and $8.29 million in 2009!!!!! are you kidding me? And now the Jets will just release him prior to his $3 million roster bonus in June and some other team will sign him for much less...Mike Brown and the Bengals would be fools to absorb this contract. I think it's Robertson who has lost out here...Keep your head up and out of your butt!!!

I was for this trade until I saw those salary numbers. You guys would be giving the Bengals crap if they had completed this trade and agreed to keep that contract. Absurd amount of money for a player who has been at best average in his career. Atleast they're showing an effort; that's more than we've seen in the past.

i understand the logic behind your argument..however my and i believe most bengal fans feel that this comes down to this organization and how it's ran to begin with.

if the bengals were a first class organization, you'd feel that first of all there would be a lot of players who would accept less money in order to play here. Secondly, with a proper scouting department and perhaps a GM, you'd like to think that instances like what have happened over the last 3 days would be less likely to happen if you had competent and more well-informed people.

Now, maybe Rogers and Robertson weren't the answers to our prayers, as many fans and apologists lead you to believe...Yet at the same time the very people you and others apologize for believe that those two were an upgrade over what we currently have or they wouldn't have attempted the trade to begin with. So which one is it...are these guys not worth it to begin with, or is this organization incompetent? I'd say all signs from the last 18 years point to the latter.

That means that there are no first class organizations in the NFL...Every player, leaves for one thing and one thing only....$$$$$!!!! Yes, there are instances, few and far between, where a guy will settle for less, but in those instances, they are only signed for 1 yr and break the bank for greener pastures after. Look at NE this season in FA....I know that's the example you're making, but if so many players would take less $ to play for that organization, why has Gay , Samuel, and Stallworth left to go play for teams that had not even made the playoffs last season??? Reason.....majority of players will and do give up wins for $$$$$$!!!!!

This was another solid 'no move' by the Bengals. If Robertson didn't want to renegotiate, then we don't want him. You simply can't pay a guy number 1 money without the results to back it up.
This was also probably an ill advised move on Robertson's part. He will likely be cut and resigned anyways.

While I agree the Bengals are cheap, and mostly incompetent, I can't believe people are this upset that we didn't get another John Thornton at a price tag of almost $10 million a year.

The Bengals might be cheap, but this is one instance when being frugal makes sense. Robertson has not played up to his inflated rookie deal of nearly $10M per year, so I actually like this decision.
