Free agency updates

1. On the proposed trade of defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, I am told the deal could be official as soon as late afternoon today. If so, Robertson might already be in Cincinnati for a physical. Maybe not, but quite possibly.

2. The Bengals today confirmed weekend visits by Titans free agent defensive end Antwan Odom and former Chargers safety Marlon McCree, who was released last week by San Diego. No word on McCree's next move, but Odom is believed to have changed his itinerary to head to Minnesota, where the Vikings wanted former Bengals end Justin Smith, who signed instead with the 49ers. Odom originally was scheduled to go to Arizona after Cincinnati.

3. In terms of what went wrong with the proposed trade for Shaun Rogers, the best explanation I've seen -- and the one that best corroborates what I've heard from a variety of source -- is in this story today from Booth Newspapers in Michigan:

http://www.mlive.com/lions/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1204521314236420.xml&coll=6

(Some readers want my opinion on the defensive line: Robertson doesn't have the character issues Rogers does and is younger -- Robertson will be 27 Oct. 16; Rogers will be 29 a week from Wednesday. And if the fourth- and fifth-round picks stay in play as what the Bengals have to give up, they've held onto the third-round pick they would have traded to Detroit.

If the Bengals can stay get Robertson, stay in the 4-3 defense and win the sweepstakes for Odom. Robertson plays much better in the 4-3 than the 3-4, which is why the Jets are training him. All of a sudden, you can keep Robert Geathers at end, opposite Odom. With a rotation of Robertson, Domata Peko and John Thornton as the top three tackles, along with Michael Myers at tackle and Jonathan Fanene and Frostee Rucker in the mix inside and outside, the line is better. To boot, the Bengals could add even another defensive lineman with the No. 9 overall draft pick.)

4. More opinion: I was struck by what Smith said on a conference call Saturday after he signed with the 49ers; the Bengals, he said, did play some 3-4 last season, switching around given the down and distance. The scheme doesn't matter as much as the players. Get the best players possible, and then let their talent dictate the scheme.

5. Even more opinion: I criticized the Bengals for drafting a running back, Kenny Irons, in the second round last year, when they should have stayed on defense. Give them some credit in free agency this year: Their efforts are entirely on defense. Marvin Lewis said last month the A. defensive and B. offensive lines were the team's top priorities in the offseason. Agree or disagree, they used the franchise tag on offensive lineman Stacy Andrews. And the majority of their activity so far in free agency has been in trying to upgrade their defensive line.

6. Back to news: The Dhani Jones signing probably won't be official until Tuesday.

Mark,

The Bengals are trying to improve he defense? Whoop-de-doo. They have been trying to do this for the past 25 years(they had a great D in 1983), and in turn have been trying many fans' patience. BECAUSE THEY NEVER IMPROVE!

Don't give the Bengals any credit until they sign some players and actually improve the defense.

To quote Yoda: "Do or Do not. There is no try."

Thank you Mark! At last an answer to this mystery. It's a sad statement that I hope Marvin and Mike heard loud and clear when Rogers clearly chose CLEVELAND over Cincinnati. How's that for a slap in the face. The Bengals have clearly regressed after Marvin's initial success and players around the league are taking notice. Bad news.

Good work digging this up, Mark.

I think the fans need to give Curnutte and Hobson a little bit of a break. If you want to read some true "Homer" reporting check out the Steelers or Browns websites.

Nicely done Mark.

That is indeed one of the best columns I've seen you write. It was informative with fact and not speculation and it gave your opinion which I agreed with for once. I think this deal is actually a total wind fall for the Bengals. We don't to face Bodden anymore who seemed to know where Carson Palmer through before he did, and cleveland picked up a lazy Defensive lineman that has off the field problems. Robertson is so much better of a pick. Let's see how the rest of the offseaon pans out.

I like it. I think robertson would be great for our defense. I think we almost have to go with odom at end and a stud in the draft then i think we will have a nice little front 7. We can still switch it up with a little 3-4 with guys like henderson, jeanty, and geathers playing it on the outside every here and there with fanene, robertson, thorton, and who ever we get from the draft i would still be optomistic about still being able to play a 3-4 a little bit. (i did notice some 3-4 in the later games last year with geathers on the outside and robinson on the inside)

Thanks for the post mark, Good stuff!

So Hobson and Curnutte are not as "homer" as others -- that does not make them less "homers." Case in point: With the loss of Williams and Johnson, the Bengals have lost three No. 2 draft choices (Steinbach, Williams and Ratliff), three No. 3's (Johnson, Miller, and Kelly Washington) and two 4's (Askew and Dennis Weathersby) since Marvin has been drafting -- and that does not include getting almost no production from two other No. 1's (Pollack and Perry) and two No. 2's (Thurman and Irons). So a team whose team philosophy is to build through the draft rather than (G-d forbid) pay a free agent, one might think that there is a story there. Not with these two.

The negativity on these comments boggles my mind. Nevermind the fact that Robertson would be a much better addition than Rogers. He is younger and a better fit and doesn't have trouble keeping his weight under four bills. Of course, the Bengals could land Robertson and Odom, go back in time and get a 22-year-old Ronnie Lott and bring Ray Nitscke back from the dead and you people would still complain. Sit back, wait to see how everything pans out and then make a decision. That's how big boys do it.

please... give the bengals credit for concentrating on defense this free agency period... they only get credit for signing someone... a good team would have both robertson and then have odom in the fold, thats addressing defensive problems... really looks like cleveland figured it out..

Davud, most of us have been "sitting back and seeing how it all pans out" for the last 17 years. Have you? Hasn't been too pretty, has it, big boy? The problem most of us have with the Bengals, is that they are extremely unlikely to get the Robertson deal done, let alone sigining Odom, who probably couldn't be found by Marvin with a search warrant now, and as much as we'd all love for the Bengals to go back in time and get Ronnie Lott, and resurrect Ray Nitzke, we all know that is fantasy, but somewhere in the Bengals front office, Mikey Boy sits and dreams "if only" (if only he could get both of them for league minimum, that is.....)

Davud, you're wrong. If the Bengals traded for Robertson and signed Odom, fans would be pleased. I will buy everyone on this blog a pint if the Begnals sign Odom. Do you know how I know they won't? Because the Bengals have never signed anybody that other teams are interested in. Last year's big signing for the Bengals was a guy who didn't make the final roster cut. Odom is going to go to Minnesota and they are going to pay him well. The worst part of all this is that it appears the Bengals organization has decided on March 2nd to stay with the 4-3 instead of switching as they had planned. This is exactly why the Bengals are a joke. They go into free agency not even knowing what kind of scheme they are operating to find the appropriate players to fit!!!

Odom is not a necessity to sign, we still have a great pass rusher in Geathers and can pick up one with the #9 pick in the draft. However, it would be nice to get Odom and then focus on another player with that 9 slot. Odom is coming off a career year and is a gamble.

I have just gotten official word that the Bengals traded 4 and 5 rounders for Robertson. Nicely done!

Don't expect Odom. The Bengals, as usual, allow a guy they like to leave town without a deal. He will not leave his other visits without a deal because they understand how free agency works.

let`s all calm down and wait until midseason, after all, performance outweighs opinion, and the bengals "d" needs to produce,or expect lewis to get fired

Robertson is, was, and will always be a bust. A top 5 pick who hasn't done a thing. The Jets traded up to get him witht the Bears and now they are cutting him? Way to go Bungals....and even though he may not have any off the field issues, just wait till he gets into that locker room.. I'm sure he'll find a few to pick up.

Why would you want Robertson anwways...he's better suited for a 4-3 defense...he doesn't fit a 3-4 which is why NY is getting rid of him....and now Cincy picks him up to use in a 3-4...Brilliant!!

I love all this 'wait and see' crap. When have the Bengals EVER made good on wait and see? People, the negativity is warranted. This team reaps what it sows. Period. The onus is on them to disprove the naysayers, not the fans to make nice while they're getting fleeced. Count me in the disgruntled majority.

The Bengals absolutely cannot compete with their current defensive lineup. New players are needed. Getting rid of Justin Smith was the Best off season move so far...

To clear up the "homer " comments concerning Hobson and Curnutte. Hobson's job is painting a rosey picture and provide misinformation or he hits the unemployment line. Curnutte can't be stopped from reporting on the Bengals, but he can have his access very limited by the Bengals, thus putting his job in jeopardy due to lack of information. So, both are yes men in a way! It's up to you to deifer the content. Remember, only 50% of what you read is true anyway.

Almost as brilliant as the people who keep assuming the Bengals are moving to a 3-4 defense.
