Goodell: Thurman decision before camp

INDIANAPOLIS -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said just a few minutes ago that a decision of suspended Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman would be made before the start of training camp, which opens in July.

The NFL allowed Thurman, suspended for the past two years, basically, for repeated violations of the league substance abuse policy, to begin working out last month at Paul Brown Stadium with his teammates and meeting with coaches.

"What we wanted to do was get him back in a structured environment," Goodell said on the eve of the NFL combine here. "He's in the program. He can make progress. If he can do that, we will make a decision prior to training camp."

Goodell had emerged from a private meeting with NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. The annual NFL scouting combine starts Thursday, but league business was in full swing today.

Give the guy a break,he's done his time!!!!Time to find out if he still can play football.Maurice Clarrett could not make a rebound after a two year hiatus from college ball.I like to see how Odell's going handle this comeback.Because that's what it is at this point, a comeback!!!

Well, that certainly leaves the Bengals with another unanswered question going into the draft - whether or not to look for LB help through the draft. If Odell can keep things in order the Bengals can use a pick to address a different area of need. But, is that a risk they want to take? Or should take?

I see a repeat of last year just days before camp when everyone is expecting him back Goodell will prove once again he has some agenda against the Bengals and deny Thurman again. denying him is one thing but to be so incompetent as Goodell has been with handling the Bengals is completely uncalled for.

Previously, God-dell had said he would make a decision by the beginning of March, which was a good and workable date, ie the Bengals could draft and deal with free agency knowing Odell's status. Now, God-dell has screwed the Bengals, forcing them to plan as if he won't be here, which in turn means wasting a precious draft pick or spending additional dollars in free agency simply because God-dell can't make a decision about a man who he suspended TWO YEAR AGO

God-dell must go. I hate what Odell did, but by god, he has "done his time" and so have the Bengals, who are desperate for the type of defensive playmaking Odell exhibited in 2005.

The amazing thing here is Thurman is guilty of drinking too much! Look at all the other degenerates in the league that have done much worse and got a lousy slap on the wrist i.e. Joey Porter! If Pacman Jones is let back in the league it will be obvious that Goodell has an agenda against the Bengals. Lastly, if the NFL wants to make a real statement about being sober, they will stop taking huge amounts of money from the beer and booze companies and not allow this type of advertising to be associated with the NFL.

I hope Goodell gets hit by a truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is absolutely no way he can be considering suspending Odell for a 3rd straight season!!!!!!!!

There have been over 50 NFL players arrested since Odell's DUI - most of them got no suspension at all. Some of them commited violent crimes like hitting wives or girlfriends.

Goodell hates the Bengals. He's a diehard Squeeler fan. That's been documented.

Not deciding until training camp affects the draft and free agency. There is absolutely no reason not to reinstate him RIGHT NOW!!!

Did Odell bring this on himself? Sure. But this is overkill and not fair to the Bengal organization or the fans.

Enough is enough!!!

I agree with most posts on this board. Odell has done his time and some, he should be reinstated. I hope that behind closed doors Goodell has told Marvin/Mike his plans so that the Bengals can plan accordingly.

At first, Goodell seemed impressive, but lately I am not so sure. The whole cover-up of destroying the tapes that the Patriots used to cheat with was kind of shady. I think that there must have been more violations on those tapes than we relized, but Goodell didn't want to bring down a team that has been 'the model' for the past six years. And part of the reason I believe this is true is because of the minor slap on the wrist he gave the Patriots. On most other teams he would have brought down the hammer. I am just glad that the cheaters didn't win it all!

I don't understand why waiting until July before making any announcement serves any good purpose for anyone. It not only further hurts the player, but it gives the Bengals no chance to really figure out their draft situation. This is what hurt the Bengals last year. When they could have taken a good linebacker early, they find out late and coupled with all of the injuries, our defense in 2007 was doomed.
If the Commissioner has any respect for the progress of Odell and any respect for the Bengals, he should reinstate him now.
I think everyone has been punished enough! Reinstate him now!!!

I really think the incident at that party in Georgia last year is what blew Odell's chances for '07. I still don't like Goodell, but maybe Odell really did need another year to get things straight. It would have been worse for him to come back and then relapse, than to wait a year and be truly sober. I just wish him the best-and we really do need him.

The real question is why are the Bengals not screaming their heads off? Would Jerry Jones ever allow this? Never. Koren Robinson gets suspended numerous times but never had to wait two years nor wait 6 months after his petition to reinstate was filed. The time is for the Bengals to state they won't stand for this anymore.
