Bengals tag Stacy Andrews

The Bengals today placed the franchise tag on offensive lineman Stacy Andrews, severely limiting his ability to leave as an unrestricted free agent. He has been offered a one-year salary tender of $7.455 million, the average of the top five offensive lineman salaries in 2007.

Andrews or defensive end Justin Smith, who received the tag last year, were the top candidates. Now Smith has no limitations on him once he hits the market Feb. 29. Another phone message left this afternoon for Smith's agent, Jim Steiner, has not yet been returned.

The Bengals repeatedly had said they were trying to sign Smith to a long-term deal, but those efforts have not been successful. If Smith were to leave via free agency, that move could be part of a larger decision to move to a 3-4 defensive scheme in which three down linemen are used, not four.

You cant pay Steinback or Goff, but you can pay this joker 7 plus million.........?

That is a lot of money for a backup OL, however, I believe it was the correct choice. (Can't believe I actually said that.) Andrews can play almost every OL position and will prove to be valuable during the season. Smith is productive, but just isn't worth the money, and Madeiu can be replaced, period. Safety's are cheap.

This was a smart move. This means nobody else gets a chance at Andrews in Free Agency, and they will still have all summer to work out a long term deal with Andrews and lessen the cap hit. Considering Willie is a HUGE question mark that might be expendable, the Bengals front office actually made a good decision. Why'd they start now? Is Parcells secretly running our personnel department too?

what dies that say for resinging Justin Smith.. he is a goner?

I think this is an overreaction and essentially an admission that they regret letting Steinbach go. They could've tagged Steinbach instead of Justin last year.
I like Stacey, but I'm not sure he's a top 10 OL.

I like the move, but if the Bengals are paying him the average of the top 10 lineman, he is going to have to be a 16 game starter. That begs a personell question:

LT: Jones, LG: Williams C: Ghiaciuc, RG: Whit, RT: Anderson.

Which one is the odd man out?

Based on position, it's gotta be Whit or Anderson?

Franchise tag on a backup offensive lineman? Really? When we already have millions tied up in Levi and Willie? I would assume that either Levi or Willie is on their way out, or this would make even less sense.r

This franchise is hopeless

Smart move given the uncertainty surrounding Willie Anderson's ability to complete another season before he goes off into the sunset. It just buys the Bengals time while they wait for the market to set the value that they refuse to pay.

Which brings me to the alleged cost(8 mil) to the Bengals if they were to trade C. Johnson---that dollar amount is not a "real" cost to the organization. It is simply a one year lowering of the overall salary cap that they never spend to in the first place.

Someone said it in a previous post regarding Alge Crumpler (ha!, btw), the only change this off season that would really matter is ridding ourselves of Mike Brown. Until that time, you, me and the rest of us suckers will continue to get in line each September for our annual seventeen week beat down!

Unless the Bengals plan on cutting Willie Anderson, this move is absolutely insane. For a team with so many holes on defense, I simply can't see the Bengals keeping THREE high-priced offensive linemen. That is particularly true in this case, where Andrews (whose salary for 2008 is projected in the 7 million dollar range) would be coming off the bench in place of Big Willie. All that aside, how can you justify designating Andrews, a career back-up, as your franchise player. You would figure the Bengals learned from last year's mistake, when they slapped the same tag on Justin Smith. He rewarded the club with a whopping two sacks in 07. Rookie DB Chinedum Ndukwe had as many sacks. Any more moves like this one and 2008 will be over before it starts.

Another indication of the complete ineptness of this franchise ! We are doing everything wrong now that Marv..Less has lost control and credibility! Only a new coach can save us from more disgrace!! Keep Chad Fire Lewis ( MAD IN MASON)

I was surprised that they tagged Andrews but with the health issues that Levi and Willie, they need some depth and experience so I agree with it from that point of view. I think they should try yo resign Wiliams, Landon and Dahani Jones as well. Let Justin Smith walk, he has been terrible for a player picks in about the 5 picks of the draft, and never makes a big play when it matters most. The Bengals get better by not having Justin Smith.

Dumb move! Just like last year with Smith. How many games has this person played.

With all the maybe players that Cincy has stock piled and all the poor decisions that they've made regarding who to sign and not sign this is a joke.

The team is like the minor league farm team compared to other teams in the league.

I like this move. It gives flexibility to determine how Anderson and Jones are going to respond to rehab on their assorted injuries. I think that they would have tagged Steinbach if there had been the major injury concerns that there were this past season. If the Bengals let Andrews go and then Jones or Anderson (or both) can't go then they would have major depth/inexperience issues. Hopefully, they will look at an OL in the 3rd round and have a year to get him accustomed to the system.

I like this Franchise tag. You have to remember Bobbie Williams will be 32 and will be a FA after the 2009 season. However, we could release him now and save some cap space. Then after Willie retires we could move Stacy over to RT and sign a FA or draft a replacement for the open RG position. Heck or we could move Willie inside to RG cut B.Williams and have Stacy as the RT.

I can't stop laughing, we just franchised a backup Offensive lienman! Unreal! A new low possibly. Stacey Andrews folks is a mediocre NFL offensive lineman, not very quick, and not a good run blocker. He's a good pass blocker for a right tackle, but certainly not worth $7.5 million per season. This all gets back to the HUGE Steinbach mistake the front office made last year. Stupid stupid stupid.

I spoke with a person who I will not name from the Bengals staff this weekend about what the Bengals will be like in 2008. His reply was sell your tickets because they are going to be awful unless you want to drink beer at the games which Cincinnati leads in sales they are not going to be anything in 2008 unless something drastic happens.

Very good move. I don't comprehend how some of you cannot think this is a smart move by the Bengals. To dub him "a career backup" is stupid. You're talking about a kid who played 70 some snaps in college. To let him grow - under a great offensive line coach - and then to let him walk away and sign a 10 year deal with another team and watch him become a stud would be foolish. We invested in this guy. Now it's time to reap the rewards. Willie might not play more than a year or two. Levi is in the same situation. So now we have Andrew W at one tackle and Stacy at the other - if something goes wrong.

Stacy's best work lies ahead of him. I could just see you people complaining back in the early '80s when Paul Brown drafted an injury prone OT out of USC who barely played his senior year. Kind of worked out for the Bengals didn't it?

Yes, the defense has its share of holes. But in today's NFL, what team is totally complete? The Colts/Patriots are all about offense. The Bears/Ravens are all about defense. Yet, they've all won Super Bowls.

Plus, you're not going to remedy your team in free agency in one year anyway. Washington has been trying to do that for a decade now, and they've got nothing to show for it. Look at what the Packers and Steelers have done. Sign your best young players, draft well (not that the Bengals have been superb in this area), and get a few stop-gaps via free agency.

This is a great move. No doubt about it.

Wow, so Stacey Andrews is as good as Anthony Munoz. Guess I was worried about this move for nothing.

It's time to move Bobbie Williams to the bench, you can't pay a guy 7+ million to be a back up! May even want to release Williams and save 3mill in cap space as I think Kofstra has filled in well as a back up at guard.

Just another example of this team being run by a bunch of boneheads. They are paying a guy a salary that places him in the top 5 in the league for OL but he is the #6 OL for the Bengals. That is a genius move. Although it is slightly better than making Justin Smith one of the highest paid DE again for his 2 sacks. With the exception of Palmer, no player on the team is worthy of the franchise tag.

Good move. Now go sign a young, capable center and sign Stacy long-term, and you have a solid, deep OL for years to come. They need to draft 5 players on defense and 2 on offense, and we finally may be on to something.

Apparently, the Bengals know something about Willie and his foot that we don't. CYA move to keep the franchise quarterback from getting killed.

I am one of the biggest complainers about the Bengals and their management, however, I am not writing this one off. First off, using the tag in this way is smart, because the others we could have used it on are not worthy and a bigger waste of money. Offensive line is a major problem we must address and Stacy is a good lineman. Secondly, don't just write him off as a backup lineman, he will probably start around 12 - 13 games. He is valuable beyond most lineman because he can start at all T and G spots, not to shabby. Frankly I would like to see us release Anderson, but after looking at the cap hit, it makes sense to keep him and hope we get at least a half season out of him. So in the end, what could look like a dumb move, probably turns out to be the smartest one. This allows you to focus on DT or DE in free agency with a top tier player, and draft another offensive lineman in the later rounds to mold for next year, while locking up Andrews long term. If they would have not kept Andrews, they would have had to get a lineman who could fill a spot or two with the chance he may have to start at T. I don't think there is anyone out there in FA/draft that is even close to being what Andrews is to this line. Money well spent for once, I am sure Mike had nothing to do with it because it makes sense.

I think its a good move, but I also agree with Anonymous @ 12:33. They should have done whatever it took to keep Steinbach around for a long time. The result....a lousy running game this season. Stacy was a project and I think he's developed pretty well. It does raise an interesting question: What about Willie???

at 2/18/2008 7:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think this move tells us that the Bengals think that someone on the current O-line will not be around very long. In other words, Stacey Andrews will be a starter.

I mean c'mon...who thinks Willie will play 16 games this season? Levi the same? Andrews is a 4th Round draft pick that the Bengals have groomed to replace Willie. Calling him a career backup is not completely fair.

I'm not saying this is the best move the Bengals have made...but it certainly sheds light into the fact that they thought they needed him so much, they franchised him.

I know we cannot go back in time, but I really wish we would've given this $7 Million to Steinbach.

This just shows the poor personnel planning of the Bengals...they only react when it's too late.

I can't help but laugh at the people that are saying Bobbie Williams should be cut or benched because his backup is making more money than him.

Great move. While the defense is a work in progress, this speaks volumes about our offensive line. How nice is it to be able to franchise your back up right tackle?

Does anyone really think Willie will play a full 16 games? Let's hope so, but just in case, we've got a young guy we drafted, we developed. Why let him go and start for another team for the next decade.

Those of you who think this is foolish probably thought drafting an often injured OT out of USC very high in the early 80's was foolish too. That one kind of worked out.

Don't tell me Justin Smith (all of two sacks) or M. Williams (how many blown assignments in coverage and whiffed tackles) were worth the franchise tag.

Besides very few teams are balanced (okay San Diego and Green Bay are exceptiosn). Indy and New England are based on offense. Chicago and the Ravens are based around defense. All of those have been to Super Bowls.

Let's make this offense one to be feared again. Then let's hope a young defense can generate turnovers and maybe force a punt in a few key situations.

I (for once) agree with the move. A good investment for your franchise QB. To say Willie and Levi won't start the whole year is an understatement. This move is insurance and should be the start of the O-line revamp. With some more coaching, he could be the future cornerstone of the O-line.

Completely agree that these guys made the mistake of not tagging Stienback and they made another mistake of Tagging Andrews. This guy is good but not this good. They should have made him a multi year deal a year ago and saved a punch of money.

Classic Mike Brown Clueless-in-Cincinnati.
Steinbach wasn't worth $7 mil but Andrews is?
Horse is gone - close the barn-door, Mike.
