Odell Thurman working out

Linebacker Odell Thurman, attempting to return to the Bengals and the NFL after what has amounted to a two-year league suspension for repeated violations of its substance abuse policy, continues to work out and has daily contact with head coach Marvin Lewis.

"I see Odell daily," Lewis said Wednesday. "I think he is doing well, he's working extremely hard. He still has some hurdles to cross in terms of his league requirements. It gives him something to hang his hat on and look forward to.

"It's a case of somebody who is a good man. He has meant nobody no harm. He has been his own worst (enemy). ... At some point he obviously didn't do something right. Unfortunately, early on, when he had the opportunity to turn this around, it didn't register. Now it has."

Thurman was permitted late last month by the NFL to begin working out with teammates and strength coaches at Paul Brown Stadium. That decision was a positive indicator that Thurman would be reinstated by the NFL.

Thurman will be just 25 on July 9. His rookie five-year contract, signed in 2005, was essentially frozen during his suspension. He has four years remaining on his deal with the Bengals. He has said in court that he is an alcoholic.

"He's still a very young guy. I think he can (be productive)," Lewis said of Thurman. "This (working out with the team) enables him to get back to the baseline. If he is reinstated, his conditioning base line will be where most guys are probably at. He's not been able to be in a position to train.

"If he can continue on this road, it will be a great story. It will be one where he can be a huge positive."

Bengals policy is not to allow players under suspension to talk to the media. They didn't allow wide receiver Chris Henry to be interviewed during his suspension. The same goes for Thurman. Thurman's representatives have said they don't want to go against club protocol.

Ya know... I don't think anybody wishes any ill will to Thurman. Being his own worst enemy is probably quite accurate. I hope he is able to recover and lead a productive life, whatever that life might be. Having said that and regarding him playing in the NFL again - I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not hanging any hopes on him coming back, but if he does then that's a plus for everybody. Good luck to him, and I hope the Bengals have a real plan to bolster the linebacker corps besides counting on Thurman as part of that.

I hope Odell has been working out. He hasn't had anything to do in two years. Chad is a cry baby!

Does suspension time count against his contract? Or did the bengals just lose two years? If so wouldn't we just be retraining him for someone else?

Hey Jack Jones...Read the article buddy...It says his contract was frozen and that of the 5 year contract, he still has 4 years left on it. Get a clue.

Well JackJones, if you read the article, it states that the contract was frozen, and that he has 4 years left on it. So I'm guessing, that's the answer to your question.

honestly...11:48, is that really necessary? real mature.....anyways, if thurman is reinstated and pollack does come back (and plays up to par), how much better do you think the defense will look now? switch to the 3-4, draft merling out of clemson, maybe it won't be so bad....

Perhaps a stupid question, but does he get his old number 51 back? I sawthey held it open for him until Cory Mays came on board. While Mays is unsigned the Bengals have exclussive rights to resign him. Will the old #51 be the new #51?

I am glad that Odell is now on the right track with his life. Also, it is pleasing to hear Marvin Lewis saying positive things about him for a change. The repetitive "he's not part of us" had to be hard for Odell. Thanks to all who have supported him during his recovery. I wish him the very best.

15 yards for pilling on Jack Jones, lighten up. Odell and Brooks side-by-side will be a force, Odell will come back better than ever. His fall-back plan is back to construction this guy has more motivation than anyone in the NFL not only to succeed but to excel. Go get 'em Odell.

Anon 11:48!!!

Was that honestly necessary? No no no, seriuosly, please respond, was that really necessary. Forget the fact that you may be the guy posting all of those "lets quit talking about chad posts"- i will put that aside- but lets be real, why be an @$$? demoted, burned, you just got served... see i can also throw in childish one liners into my post that does no benefit to others and only contributes to the stupidity of myself. I ask you, Was that necessary?

Oh yeah, and Jack Jones, I am sorry for everybody getting there jimmys up there butt about you miss understanding the article. You know, it is that time of month for some of these guys and they get angry when they dont have there daily serving of beer, chips, and chicken wings with a little bit of -i wish i still played high school football- sauce. It's an ugly thing. The funny part about it is all of the bloggers adventually sinc with each other once they have been in the same blog for so long. Imagine living with 20 Insane women and its the 3rd week of the month. (its like that!)

Having said that, if odell stays out of trouble he could be the best thing to happen to this defense.

P.S. Jack, watch out for spelling errors too. They hate that. remember 6th grade English class? It like that!

I am and have been a fan of Odell since his high school days in Monticello, GA. He played basketball and football against my old high school Morgan County in Madison,GA. Being only 25 minutes away, many of the locals around here were proud and happy that "he made it" not only to the University of Georgia where he played like a junkyard dog, but to the NFL!!! A major accomplishment for someone coming from such adversity and humble beginnings. I really hope he has matured and realized what a great opportunity he has before him. Go Odell!! I'm pulling for ya young man!! GOD Bless!!

I pray every day for Odell and for his healing, and his return to the Bengals. Odell always been a good person- with a contagious grin and a good heart. I know he's had some "bumps in the road," but I've always believed that he can straighten things out. Whether he was a 'Cane, a Dawg, or a Bengal, he has always been a fighter- and I know he can fight the good fight for himself this time! We love you, Odell!
