Lewis: Bengals will not trade Chad

In his strongest statements to date about Chad Johnson, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis this afternoon said that the team will not trade the star wide receiver and has never even discussed it.
"No. 1, the guy has a contract through 2011, OK," Lewis said in an interview with The Enquirer and the team Web site. "No one within the Bengals organization has ever spoken of or ever uttered anything about trading Chad Johnson, nor will he be traded.
"There is no such thing as behind-the-door dealings in the NFL. That does not occur because the team in question (the Bengals) is not willing to trade their player nor have they thought about trading their player or discussed trading their player, or will they discuss trading their player. So I think that’s pretty clear. Things can move on.
"Our player (Johnson), we know is very passionate about the game. He continues to play at a very, very high level. He has been very, very productive. He has been well-compensated and, unfortunately … "
In the past month, Johnson has used the bully pulpit of the national media – primarily radio and the NFL’s own television channel, NFL Network – to criticize the Bengals and express his desire to play elsewhere. At one point, Johnson said Lewis stopped talking to him at mid-season.
Lewis said this afternoon that he has not spoken to Johnson since the final regular-season game Dec. 30 at Miami.
"People (in the building) talk to him," Lewis said. "It's unfortunate for Chad that he is being cast in this light because it’s not fair. So once again I will go on record in defense of him."
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the Redskins were interested in trading for Johnson because team owner Daniel Snyder wants an elite receiver. The NFL Players Association confirmed Tuesday what The Enquirer had reported a week ago, that the Bengals would take an $8.03 million salary cap hit if they traded or released Johnson before June 1.
Lewis is confidence Johnson can return to the Bengals and fit in with his teammates.
"We've had a great relationship," Lewis said of Johnson and the Bengals. "All I want to see is Chad continue to be a very, very productive NFL player and help us win a lot of football games. And that’s not going to change.
"I think everybody in the NFL realizes, unfortunately, that contracts can be a very big part of what the game is all about. What you have to do as a football team is put some of that aside and not really worry about that and go back to work and work as a football team. That happens (across the league)."
Lewis referenced the New York Giants, winners of Super Bowl XLII, though one of their top defensive players, end Michael Strahan, threatened to retire during training camp in a contract squabble.
"He came back, he didn't get paid any more money, and he just played," Lewis said of Strahan.

Finally something from the Bengals, so they aren't going to trade him. Good. Now we can just stop talking about it, and worry about the draft, and improving that defense and running game.
Why would anyone believe anything M.L. says ??? Remember he giggles after losses!! An incompetent, arrogant bafoon with NO CREDIBILITY!!!
I agree, Lewis is a joke. I could practically see the puppet strings being manipulated as I read this. Could an ownership/coaching group be any more clueless on how to run a team? To the first responder of this post: this ain't over yet. It's sad it's come to this, but, this team has Z-E-R-O credibility. Who believes they know how to right the ship?
Why didn't Lewis just say this during the middle of the season- when it really would've had an impact. If I remember correctly, Chad hadn't said a word at that point- and yet we were bombarded with rumors and speculation (ESPN, Doc, the Enquirer, etc.) about the possibility of trading Chad. It was a completely crazy sentiment at the time (same cap issues AND it was the middle of a season), yet the rumor was coddled by the local media and allowed to fester. Clearly Chad started to believe it when he heard no support from the organization. Now its become more of an issue- and finally Marvin speaks. Should have been said with this type of clarity a lot earlier. Why was that so hard to say.
I like Marvin Lewis and I have liked Chad Johnson. However, when all you hear is Chad bad-mouting the Bengals organization and coaching staff and complaining that he wants to be traded; it gets a little old. Fact: Chad is a crybaby when things don't go his way. He is far too emotional of a player for someone of his talent. There is a difference between playing with emotion and playing emotionally. Chad plays emotionally. If something bad happens he gets upset about it. If something good happens like him scoring a TD he goes nuts and does stupid stuff in the endzone. He is unstable in my opinion and needs to be disciplined. But Marvin has proven from time to time that discipline is not part of his coaching style. His coaching style is to pat them on the shoulder and say better luck next time. This may be true or it may not but this is how it looks. If you chart Chad's career you can easily see that there has been no discipline present. I like Marvin and I like Chad but something has to give. The Bengal coaches cannot afford to continue to let Chad's emotional state affect this team. Chad is the #1 Guy which means the team responds to his reactions. When he is happy the team is happy, when he is an emotional wreck the team is an emotional wreck. If I could say one thing to Chad it would be this: "Shut up and play the game."
they need to get rid of lewis and put a defense on the field that doesnt let the cleveland browns score 51 points!
Where is that idiot "Halftime" guy?
I guess its pretty obvious that he has far less than "half" of a complete understanding of the NFL salary cap. No comment at this time right? Do your friends get tired of you spouting off wildly inaccurate information?
Chad needs to stop flapping his mouth and start catching the passes he is paid to catch.
There were instances in the 1st Cleveland game, the Buffalo game and the San Francisco game where Chad had huge drops that would have been TDs if he had caught them. Chad, shut your mouth and catch the ball.
Also - he had a huge fumble vs Arizona.
Obviously 7-9 isn't all Chad's fault, but less mistakes from Chad might have meant an 11-5 season...
I'll say it again - Chad, shut your mouth and catch the ball!
Isn't it obvious to everybody....
ANON 5:44 should be head coach of the bengals. ML obviously has no idea what he is doing and does everybody see what ANON 5:44 is saying? Delightful, music to my ears. To think, our answer has been lying in the mind of one disgruntled fan that just so happens to live in this city.
He burned his chad jersey, his "in marvin we trust" t-shirt, and still wears his 05 division champions hat, ITS.... ANON 5:44. Well equiped with anger, rage, and the power to bring down anybody that has a bit of hope and/or optimism in there franchise for seasons to come.
(batteries not included. See bengals blog for more details)
Is it me or is it getting fiery stupid in this place? (gasp)
Keep Chad, keep Marvin (please post a rationally better option if you are opposed to this), fix both lines, and resign Smith, Williams, and Andrews (sorry guys, we arent getting anybody in free agency, dont get your hopes up) You may not like it but your going to have to deal with it... Root for somebody else if you are only going to complain about everything!
Mike from scratch
Mike from scratch,
In case you didn't notice, I'm not the only one bashing the team here, but I'll bite. You single me out why? Because I don't blindly support and agree with everything the team does anymore? I got news for you, I used to be a lemming just like you. 'Just wait until next year' was my yearly mantra.
I'm guessing you jumped on the bandwagon circa 2003 or so, right after things started looking up. So I'll give you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to being a 'true fan', as you apparantly claim to be. Me, I've been dealing with this for far longer and have, in my humble opinion, a much more realistic view of the situation. I'm in what is known as Marvin's 'I see better than I hear' mode. So I'm skeptical, big deal. There's no rule that says I need to be totally behind the team to post a comment. And last I looked, other people feel the same way regarding the team. You can only get kicked around for so long before you start fighting back. You keep spending your money and emotional capital, though. The Brown family needs people like you.
Chad isn't going to the skins. They're moving to the West Coast offence and chad wouldn't fit in that system or be happy in it. West Coast features lots of shorts slant routes. Chad's number of receptions would problably be reduced by 1/3 (from 90+/- to 60+/-).
"No one within the Bengals organization has ever spoken of or ever uttered anything about trading Chad Johnson, nor will he be traded."
Did he actually say that with a straight face, or was he giggling?
I guess Chris Mortensen just fabricated the whole story, and Marvin Lewis wasn't his "prominent" source.
I think the real story is not will Chad get traded. Obviously, that was a non-story all along. The real story was what was this prominent guy's motivation in starting false rumors? Did he want to create the situation he has? Is that his way of bettering the organization? And should this prominent guy keep his job, or do the Bengals need a new leader?
When Chad signed with Drew Rosenhaus, I predicted he would eventually be agitating for a new
contract. That is what happened
to Terel Owens. Rosenhaus, in
his greed to get a piece of a new, larger contract, made T.O. a pariah
in the NFL. He is doing the same with Chad, who is too stupid and immature to know what is going on. As a result, Chad is going to lose hundreds of thousands in endorsements and personal appearance fees. Pathetic. These simple minded, uneducated athletes turn their lives over to unscrupulus agents. Where are the Tim Kumries of today. Tim did his own negotiating, did very well, and never missed a practice or a
game. And he didn't have to give a chunk of his pay check to one of these leeches. Tim came from good stock--a tough as nails Wisconsin farm boy who was a wrestling champion in college and an overachieving 7th round draft choice. How I miss him!
Chad is a talented receiver but a very immature young man. He has been treated like a celebrity in Cincinnati and given a free pass for his personal life which includes illegitimate children.
Time for him to grow up and
quit whining.
