Chad and T.J. on NFL Network

Bengals wide receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh with NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes on "Put Up Your Dukes" today.

Jamie: Let's talk about Madden (video game) for a minute. We're all Madden fans, you guys play Madden and my understanding is that one of the guys from the Cincinnati team wants to trade Madden teams.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh: Uh ... I don't know if it works like that. We'll see … we'll see if they allow you to trade your team.

Jamie: I think his rating wasn’t high enough in the Madden game and so the people weren't being appreciative of his Madden skill set.

T.J.: Right.

Jamie: And so I think he's feeling under appreciated.

T.J.: If that’s the case, everybody knows how one feels so we'll see what happens. It's out of their control and we'll see. Wherever the ship takes you, that's where you go.

Jamie: But you're not going to allow him to just change Madden teams, are you?

T.J.: It's out of my control. I can't control that. I have no say-so, no control whatsoever, so you just to go out there and do what you do and whatever happens, happens.

Jamie (to Chad): Let’s talk about your Madden game, the rating. Is it not high enough, or what's the deal?

Chad Johnson: I think on Madden the ratings go up to a "99," am I correct?

Jamie: Right.

Chad: And as of last year I was a "98," so I'm one off of perfection, you know. That perfection has not been good enough in real life because I haven't gotten my team to the playoffs since 2005, I haven't gotten us to Super Bowl contention since 2001, so in other words … it is what it is.

Jamie: Do you think that just the two of you and Carson (Palmer), is that enough?

Chad: I don’t know if it's enough. I'm not sure if I'm really the solution to getting us there, you know? So far I've just really been the problem. But we have ample time to fix the problem and find a solution.

Jamie (to T.J.): Are you surprised to hear that potentially (Chad) is the problem – in perception?

T.J.: I'm not surprised by anything. Perception is reality so … I talk to Chad all the time, so I kind of know what's coming so it doesn’t surprise me. Again, whatever you can control, you can control. If it happens, it happens and will be the best for everybody and if it doesn’t, you go play.

Jamie (to T.J.): But you go out on Sunday, you watch the film, you watch tape, you know what's going on, and to see and hear what's heard and the media reports talking about this and that and they don't make any sense … that's got to be frustrating.

T.J.: I mean, you just wonder where it comes from. It has to start somewhere –

Chad: A prominent source.

T.J.: That's, that's the thing –

Chad: A prominent source within the organization. Prominent.

Jamie: You think, really?

Chad: Prominent.

T.J.: As for whoever has the "prominent source," I don’t know –

Jamie (to Chad): You believe it's really coming from within?

Chad: I think whatever happens in house gets out. That prominent source, you know. But the question will always remain, regardless … How do you stop 85? (said in Spanish). Always. (The question) will always remain. Just continue to replay it and let someone else translate it for you.

Jamie: And you think they're stirring the pot within the organization?

Chad: They've been stirring it for 16 weeks. Everybody had something to say for 16 weeks, in house, you know? I don’t know where all those voices are at now. I seem to be the only one speaking out. All those voices that talked for 16 weeks, where's all that man? Now’s the time to let it out.

Jamie: How do you see it playing out?

Chad: There's a man that sits high and there's a man that looks low. And I think he's going to take care of everything the way it's supposed to be taken care of. I've handled my business. I've done what I can do in my way … like Frank Sinatra, in my way. I've done it very well and I've done it consistently. I have not done it perfect, but I've done it consistently at a very high level. I have had a couple wrongs, I have gotten out of line every now and then, but what great one doesn't? What great one is not emotional about what he does, what great one does not have passion about what he does, what great one hates losing? Take those three, think about it, replay it and find me a great one that doesn’t do the same things that I've done in the past and I'll stop playing. Period.

Jamie (to T.J.): Do you see a resolution in sight?

T.J.: It's going to be a resolution whether somebody’s happy or not. A resolution is going to happen. The question is will it be a resolution that will make all parties happy. Of course they'll be a resolution, it has to be. Again, whatever happens, happens. You do what you do and whatever happens, you go with it.

All this “code” talking is ridicules! I love Chad but he is making a fool of himself at the ProBowl. This is to be an honor for him being at his 5th but all he is saying is “code” of what isn’t happening in Cincinnati. Truly a shame! He also better watch it, putting TJ on the line about his issues, he’s liable to lose a close friend.

However, as a Bengals organization, I can not believe they are being totally silent! But that's Mike Brown for you. This is Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon all over again.

I’m ashamed to call myself a Bengals fan when it comes to these situations….. :-(

On a much much brighter note:
YOU GO TJ!!!! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE!!! CONGRADULATIONS ON YOUR FIRST OF MANY PROBOWLS!!!!

There are easily dozens, (maybe hundreds) of great ones that haven't done it Chad's way. Can we assume Chad's a man-of-his-word? and will therefore quit. Hope so!

Just another symptom of Mike Brown's dysfunction - we're screwed.

if chad doesn't get traded and this mess gets cleaned up, what are you "fans" gonna do when he turns in another pro bowl caliber year? we all know what he is capable of on the field because his numbers speak for themselves. just suppose for one minute that the bengals turn around MIRACULOUSLY and have a very successful season. and suppose chad johnson plays an integral role in that season. are you gonna jump on the bandwagon like you did a few years ago when the bengals won the AFC north? or are you gonna boo him when he catches a game saving pass? now look at what you guys are saying...the bengals players are not gonna read this but you certainly are not helping the situation. honestly, what are the bengals supposed to do? suppose they trade him....now you've lost one of the best receivers in the game....you have a pro bowler in TJ and a guy who gets in trouble off the field in chris henry..both are talented but have benefited from having a guy like chad johnson on the field...in their pass-happy offense, who's gonna be the third receiver? tab perry? glenn holt? antonio chatman? two of those three are coming off injuries that ended their 2007 seasons and neither has been healthy for a full season since 2005. and honestly, maybe tab perry could fill the role that chris henry was in. you have to realize that by getting rid of chad, you have to expect TJ to step up and be the #1, henry to be the #2, and someone to be the #3. you need that 3rd receiver if you're going to be a passing offensive team. so you have to admit that the passing game will take a hit from his loss. so you say run the ball...well rudi johnson had a great year averaging just under 3 YPC and totaling 250+ yards LESS than kenny watson who only had 8 more carries. kenny watson did have a good year but if you expect them to become a running team, then they'll need a more established back. kenny's a great guy and he's a cog that needs to stay for the team to improve, but he's not the guy they would need to be a great running team. so then after we've established that the offense would be hurt a lot more than you would expect with 85's departure, you would say to replace him with a defensive player and concentrate completely on the defense like the 06-07 Bears because defense wins championships (which is true). well that one defensive player is not gonna solve the problem. the bengals gave up an average of about 350 YPG! they would need to revamp their entire defense in order to become an immediate dominant force in the NFL. they did a good job by hiring zimmer as a defensive coordinator but you cant turn it around without the players that are capable. all the players in the NFL are there for a reason. however, not all of those players are gonna be impact players. unfortunately, the bengals defense is full of guys that are not impact players. they have a lot of young guys that have potential but thats all it is right now. honestly, are we gonna make next year a "rebuilding" year like we have the past 10+? getting rid of him is not gonna solve the problem. when the bengals got rid of carl pickens did they ever turn into a powerhouse? what about corey dillon? so what makes you think that its gonna change and they're gonna be better this time if they trade him? is it the amazing run game that was 24th in the league this year? or is it the bone crushing defense mentioned above? with or without him the bengals right now are a one-dimensional team. at least with him they have an extra weapon on offense. so you gotta ask yourself, is getting rid of him really gonna make a difference? or are we just saying that they should get rid of him cuz it makes us sound like we care? maybe he's not the problem. maybe being an awful to average (at best) team is what really sets us off. this situation is just an excuse for you to blame someone. cuz after all, someone has to take the blame.

I'm so glad baseball is starting, I can forget about the world's worst owner, biggest jerk egomaniac receiver, and lamest set of scouts ANYWHERE.

Good riddance. Please don't draft like idiots again this year. No more running backs or receivers. All DL and OL and LB for a change, top to bottom, you clueless owner!

And trade Ocho Stinko for a class-act star LB. How can anyone love Chad? What an utterly clueless individual. All stats and no championship--the best WR in the NFL these past 5 seasons only on paper--the biggest loser amongst the top 30 Wideouts in the NFL by far.

How about just one season with duct tape over your big fat mouth, Chad?

A season where you actually catch balls that hit you in the numbers and you run routes like you're supposed to?

at 2/09/2008 1:57 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

when you try to compare this to the carl pickens or corey dillon situation lemme just state the facts...the 2000 season (first without pickens), the bengals went 4-12, the exact same record that they had the year before...the season after dillon left, the bengals went 8-8, again the exact same record as the year before....when pickens left for tennessee, the titans went 13-3. when corey dillon left for new england, the patriots went on to win the super bowl. now i'm not saying that those two players were the reasons why their new teams did well. but what i am saying is that those two players were NOT the reasons why the bengals had problems. with that being said, when you say things like "this is carl pickens and corey dillon all over again", you really don't have much of a point because in both situations, the team that eventually got those two players won their respective conferences and as stated before, one won the super bowl. so, if you are complaining about how you're sick of the bengals losing and how this is why they're losing, then do a little thinking and realize that its not chad johnson that is the problem. he certainly didnt help it but why are you trying to get rid of him when in reality what he did was just make it public that the bengals have problems. and yeah we should just be soooo offended cuz no one knew about the DUI's, supplying underage girls with alcohol, beating of GF's, substance abuse problems, etc. yeah those things were kept so hush-hush that we can't believe someone could say anything bad about the franchise. and don't get me started on mike brown.

I always liked Chad. I should have known when he supported TO and then Mike Vick that he had a few screws loose. He is not getting released or traded and he is going to get booed mercilessly so I would suggest he start growing up quickly or he will ruin 08 for himself and the team.

Hey Mr Anonymous at 2/9/2008 1:57AM,

Did you ever see the comedian by the name of Jeff Dunham? He is a ventriloquist with several hand puppets in his act. The one puppet is name Peanut and several times thru his act he points out an individual in the audience and says “Hey buddy! Vrrrrrruuuuuummmmm! This guy totally isn’t getting this.” with a swiping motion of his left hand flying across the top of his head…..Well……

The point was, Mr. Mike Brown is treating this situation the same as Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon. Got it now?

at 2/09/2008 9:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

4:00, thats not really that hard to understand....so you say mike brown is treating it just like before....well, dont you think there should be a change in his approach? obviously what he did with the previous two situations didnt help cuz both players ended up on very good teams and the bengals continued to struggle. now the point i was trying to emphasize is that getting rid of chad like how they got rid of dillon and pickens isn't gonna solve anything. did you not understand the last sentence of my post when i said "dont get me started on mike brown."? the emphasis in my argument is to point out that the previous two situations did not come out positively for the bengals. when you say that mike brown is taking the same approach, then it makes one reminisce about the previous instances when this type of situation occurred. when someone says something like "get rid of him- this is just like carl pickens and corey dillon", then i think about how those previous situations benefited the bengals. neither one seemed to turn out too well for the bengals cuz neither one solved any problems. so when you read my posts, don't just read it and think thats its just dumb logic i'm posting. i'm assuming that the majority of you have some common sense and at least a high school education so i don't expect to explain every little detail.

12:36am made my head hurt. Try a couple paragraphs next time you leave a manifesto.

Since we've moved to puppets, Drew Rosenhaus has his hand firmly in Chad's back. Having Chad wear a Ravens cap in Pro Bowl practice was his latest salvo.

Just keep sitting silent Mike Brown and let Chad/Drew run the show.

Sometimes the dumbest are the loudest. It's amazing how in the course of one year, both fans and announcers go from riding Chad's jock, admiring his skills and his fun & entertaining personality... to blaming him for Bengals' losses.

How can you do anything but jump on the bandwagon of a guy who breaks team records and NFL records while making players on both teams smile with his creative up-beat demonstrations? Every game, announcers would say something about how everyone "loves Chad Johnson" and how even though he talks trash, he is doesn't do it with the negative, rancid style that a lot of other players do. His style is more playful and makes the game more enjoyable.

It just doesn't add up. Chad is breaking records one week. The next, he is booed for dropping a pass. Like I said, it's the dumbest who are often the loudest. Do you act the same way at your children's little league games? Try to publicly humiliate them or rattle them up if they ever drop a pass? Maybe some would respond well to that, but it's clear that Chad Johnson doesn't. Whatever happened to getting your team psyched up for the next play? Cheer them on! What happened to being TRUE loyal fans? EXACTLY as Chad complains: "No one has my back."

Some say Chad is too "thin skinned". He cares too much about what the crowd says. Myabe that's true, but that's just who he is: he loves getting the crowd into it (hence all the entertaining displays) and he PLAYS BETTER when he gets that friendly roar of TRUE fans. He FEEDS on it. To the same degree, it weighs him down when idiots boo him.

It's probably like this in other cities, too, but in Cincinnati, there are not a lot of true fans. Their love of the players is QUITE CONDITIONAL... it has a lot to do with the WEATHER. It should be understood that fans here are tortured, frustrated, and starved for more playoffs. And now, a team that all thought would make the playoffs for sure... frustratingly did not. Fans in need of someone to blame now boo Chad and accuse him of being selfish and attention hungry. What a Flip Flop. Betrayal. You moody fans.

Chad is a "Great One". One of the best things to happen to the Cincinnati Bengals in a long time. Of course fans want to see improvement +/- blame someone when the Bengals don't go to the playoffs... but soon fans may be blaming themselves for what may become a monstrous & tragic loss to the Cincinnati Bengals: the great Chad Johnson has been betrayed... and may leave as a result.

I can't understand the sudden change in the way Cincinnati feels about Chad Johnson.

I think we can blame the media. This year, Chad played as hard as he could, all the year through. Sure, he has a few down days, loses his cool a few days (he admits that), but all this bizzare gossip against Chad sounds more and more like a Tabloid Soap Opera crap every day. Would media franchises defame an undeserving individual if it got better ratings?

For example, a few times this year, Carson and Chad miscommunicated. Chad didn't run the exact route that Carson was expecting. Whatever really went wrong, we as fans don't know. All we see is an extreme close-up view of a frustrated Chad and frustrated Carson talking afterwards. Chad... and Carson, both being relatively intense (you could say "emotional") guys clearly had high energy in their conversation. THAT'S NOTHING NEW! Football players feeling emphatic about the game? (Don't you WANT that?) Neither Chad nor Carson demonstrate a negative "change in character" here that would warrant them being disliked by fans.

My main point would be that, as an ignorant outsider not present in the conversation... not even being able to hear what is being said (and players not even realizing that they are being filmed and analyzed by everyone), such a little interaction could be interpreted many ways. What could be interpreted as 2 great players being emphatic about the game instead becomes "Chad Johnson aggressively arguing with Carson Palmer" or "a rift between Carson and Chad" or "Chad and Carson unable to communicate". Crap quotes like that get your attention, yes, but their value ranks up there with headlines like "Jennifer Aniston gains 5 pounds?" Chad and Carson no doubt were on the same page in the locker room minutes later.

It's Paparazzi-like reporters like Alex Marvez who fuel these degrading gossipy fires. Chad made it clear that he not interested in talking to Marvez or any other reporters at that time on the 2/8/08 Marvez report. For some reason, reporters think it's OK to thrust a camera in ANYONE'S FACE ANYTIME and air it on National TV. Clearly Marvez cares not at all for Chad as a person... Marvez just wanted to stir the pot of a clearly frustrated Chad Johnson. I guess that gets him good ratings. I'm glad that Chad wouldn't stand for it or let himself to be FORCIBLY MANHANDLED into A nationally televised interview with a person he didn't wish to talk with. The nerve of Marzen to protray Johnson as a "violent individual". Marvez, Johnson is known for being non-violent. His interactions on the field are poised and well controlled. His "trash talk" with his rivals is playful, good-natured, and entertaining.

I just wish that those who watch or listen to such media would learn to think for themselves and not be influenced by such Paparazzi crap.

Marvez, I don't know if you have plans today, but why don't you go wait outside of Brittany Spear's house? If you run up to her before being tackled by security, you may be able to get an intrusive or revealing picture of her getting in or out of her car.

I TOTALLY AGREE with: 2/09/2008 12:36 AM - "if chad doesn't get traded and this mess gets cleaned up, what are you "fans" gonna do when he turns in another pro bowl caliber year?"

I'm glad you typed all of that, so now I don't have to. Cincinnati really has no real "fans" to speak of, unless our teams are winning - no matter if it's the Reds or the Bengals. Matter of fact, to think of MOST of Cincinnati's fans, makes me puke a little. Don't worry, Man, they'll jump right back on the "Chad-Wagon" this season. Then they will see, like they do EVERY season, how friggin' great Chad is. He's one of the reasons I watch - I love his style. So, to all you so called "Bengals Fans", STFU!!! We're all tired of hearing from you!

JillAnne and 2/09/2008, finally we have a breath of fresh air, SOME INTELLEGENT SOUNDING COMMENTS, on this blog. I am the writer of 2/10/08 12:12pm and 12:49pm. You 2 are clearly true fans. It sounds like you ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE PLAYERS you root for. If only Paul Brown Stadium could be filled with fans like you instead of the grumpy weird ones that fill a large percent of it now. It's supposed to be the ROAD GAMES that are difficult to play at... but "at home" here, if Chad gets shaken up and misses a pass for whatever reason, his intellegent home crowd inspires him with a chorus of BOOS.

Well placed "STFU" JillAnne. I think I'll use it here:

STFU player haters.

Also, fair whether fans, STFU at home too, because I KNOW that you probably cause turmoil in your families and in your marriages via your negative, draining, uninspired complaining attitudes that are incapable of motivating positive progress in difficult situations.

I'm glad I don't have you all standing behind me booing me into the ground whenever I make a mistake at work. I'd never get out of the O.R.

Sir LT

It's people like you that keep this farce going for the Brown family. Blindly following and rooting for a team that, quite frankly, doesn't care one bit about you. Lining their pockets - yes. Care one way or the other about you - no. You live in a fairy tale.

There are a lot of people on here saying that Bengals fans are blaming Chad for the bad season and booing him at home games. I'm not sure who these people are talking to or what home games they attended, but no one I know has blamed Chad for the way the Bengals season went. The typical people being blamed are:
1. The Defense (or lack of it)
2. Mike Brown
3. Mike Brown
4. Marvin Lewis/Coaches
People on the blogs are upset with Chad for the way he is acting now, in the offseason. As far as being booed at the games, it did not happen much(one play stands out: when he just sat on the turf after he fumbled and didn't even attempt to tackle the CB who recovered the ball). Bengals fans are no different than any other fans, when the team lacks passion and does not play to it's potential, the fans get upset. You can call it bandwagoning, but show me a city where the fans collectively stay positive while backing a team that played the way the Bengals did this season (besides Green Bay where there is nothing else to do in Winter but root for the Packers). It's called human nature. If you invest your time and money into something, you obviously want something back in return. Sorry for the long post.
