Chad to Pro Bowl

Chad Johnson will play in his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl game.

The Bengals learned this afternoon that Johnson will replace New England's Randy Moss, who withdrew after suffering an injury in the Super Bowl Sunday night.

Johnson was voted to the four previous Pro Bowls. He was selected as a first alternative for the game this coming weekend. He will replace Moss and join fellow Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Indianapolis' Reggie Wayne and Cleveland's Braylon Edwards as the AFC's four wide receivers.

Reached on his cell phone this afternoon, Johnson hung up when The Enquirer identified itself seeking comment on the honor. He has not spoken to the Cincinnati-based media since October.

The game will be played Sunday in Honolulu.

Together, Houshmandzadeh and Johnson become the first pair of Bengals wide receivers to be named to the Pro Bowl in the same season. Their collective 205 receptions and 2,583 receiving yards in 2007 are the most for any pair of Bengals' receivers in any single season.

Johnson caught 93 passes for 1,440 yards and eight touchdowns in 2007. The 1,440 receiving yards broke his own franchise season record (1,432 in 2005), and he became the team’s all-time leader in receptions (559) and receiving yards (8,365). The 93 catches marked his fourth career 90-catch season. He now has at least one catch in 92 consecutive games, one short of Carl Pickens’ team-record streak of 93 games.

Johnson had five 100-yard receiving games in 2007, tying the team record he already shares, and has extended to 26 his Bengals career record for 100-yard receiving games. His 209 receiving yards on Sept. 16 at Cleveland was the AFC high for the year.

CHAD GOING TO THE PRO BOWL? SCOREBOARD HATERS.....Where are all the jealous, playerhating, envious, blog geeks NOW? Congrats Chad, you deserved it despite the playerhating punks who hate the fact that you make more money in one game than they will make in their pitiful lifetime. Lets see the haters call sports talk radio and complain about this accomplishment. maybe we should start a campaighn for Chad...........let's call Chad "the REAL NATURAL" not that guy with abuse problems who was just traded from the Reds. I love it....Chad in the pro bowl....not bad for a guy the playerhating media calls a "cancer"......Call Chad what you want....but make sure you call him a "PRO BOWLER".....WHERE'S YOUR MOSES NOW HATERS?

there is NO DOUBT about Chad Johnson's skills. I think the problem people are have is hearing his cry baby attitude when as you so accuratly point out he has more money than most of us will see in our live time. So he gets paid a great deal of money to play a game. Why does he have to wine & cry about the he supposely is not getting when he's got enough money to buy all the love he needs. I think if he would just pipe down and go about his business like a professional like say his fellow Bengal T.J. I don't think people would take bad about him. Congrats Chad on going to the Pro bowl now please just do your job and people will forget about the other B.S. as long as ur Agent and you allows us to be fans of the game and let you go till next August when you can start all ur chest beating then.

Chad may make more in one game check than you will make in your entire life time because you're an idiot, but he won't even make more in one season than I will make in mine. When someone ask, "How much you gettin' paid?" do you still respond with "$XX.00 per hour"? Seriously, how big of a moron are you, ex athlete who knows sports?

Congratulations, Chad...

Nobody doubts the mans talents, its just the fact he is acting like a 5 year old who didnt get his way on the playground so he goes and pouts in the corner. Your right he does make alot of money, more than most of us will ever see, however he is doing it playing a game so he needs to just be thankful and quit acting like a child.

What jersey will he be wearing?? Last time I checked, football was a team sport. Remove the cancer if he can't adapt to Marvin's rules.

Hey Marvin - it would have helped if you would have defined your rules before you got here and held someone accountable after they broke them.

Bengals trademarked the saying...
8-8 Ain't it Great!

I can't wait for Chad Johnson to walk onto the field wearing his Degree deodorant uniform. After all when you think about it, he STINKS now.

Great Job Chad, you really deserve this. Just remember football is a team sport and the only way for you to get to the Super Bowl is to play as a team. The Giants did.

Hey Mark--always enjoy your articles and blogs.

I personally think Chad is a cancer too, but have a qucik question for you:

Was it ever confirmed (or discounted) that Chad threw a expletive laced temper-tantrum during halftime of the Bengals/Steelers playoff game in '06???

If Chad would stop acting like a spoiled child when he don't get everything that he wants. I am sick of all the childish actions Chad has done. The pro-bowl is for pros that act like pros. His mouth has got to go.

Why does he deserve this??? He had an average season at best and there are other recievers that deserve it a lot more.

Chad is a great player and deserves to be in the pro bowl. He should also be man enough to honor the long term commitment he agreed to with his current contract.

Its good that Chad puts up good yard number, but how about putting up the most important number TD's!
I would put Chad on the PUP list for 2008 and send him home!

First off..that guy is an idiot. Either that guy is Drew Rosenhaus or he is a steelers fan...either way he obvioulsy didnt watch a single bengals game all year. Chad Johnson is a good football player, but he is not clutch. He drops big passes( san franscisco game, and hes scared to go across the middle). His run blocking is horrible. I would consider any guy who doesnt want to play on your team and cries about it a cancer. I would like the bengals to part ways with our malcontent reciever but Chris Henry off the field problems concern me. I am a die hard season ticket holder and dont want to see chad johnson in a bengals uniform next year. Trade him for a 2nd or 3rd draft pick and move on. Yes, you dont get the value with that draft pick especially with the history of unsuccesful draft picks in the marvin era, but you rid the team of a distraction. Build the defense. Move to a 3-4 alignment and hopefully we can stay healthy at linebacker. I picture a defensive front with rucker, sedrick ellis (9th pick), john thornton, LB Jeanty, Odell , Brooks, and Dhani, with the young secondary we could be potentially a 15th to 20th rank defense. Carson Palmer is the future and Ocho Cinco in the huddle in 08 seems more of a negative than a positve. Player Hater ? Maybe I am a player hating a guy who doesnt deserve to go to the probowl. Besides Wes Welker had a way beter year. Hater

Folks, I think we all know that the person who posted the first comment on this blog posts the same types of meaningless, racist rants under numerous handles, including "Anonymous". He no doubt does this so that it appears that there are numerous people who feel the same way he does, about Mark's reporting ability, about the "racism" of the people in the Cincinnati area, etc. He's a perfect example of a person who has never succeeded at anything he's done in his life, and so he lives vicariously through pro athletes that he feels he can relate to based on their skin color, and takes personally any criticism of those athletes as if it were directed at him.

Now, sir, I believe there's clean-up in Aisle 7 that you need to take care of. Break time's over.

I always have been a Chad defender. I am a 34 year season ticket holder and I have always wore my 85 jersey with pride. I have a picture of him with my nephew and a signed helmet helmet in my office. I hate to see Chad act the way he is now. I keep hearing from all my friends "I told you he would end up being a cry baby like T.O." C'mon Chad snap out of it! Show these people that you are not a carbon copy of these prima donna players. I just really hate this. Chad, you are disappointing a lot of your major fans and I just want to know why? If it is your agent, can him! I don't think you are really that self centered. I need to talk to your grandma, she needs to give you a good talkin' to or a hard smack up side of the head. I want the old Chad back (the one that turned my 76 year old mother onto football. She never watched or cared until Chad came around). If not, I guess I will just have to put up with everybody saying, "I told you so."

Oh yeah, to the guy from the ghetto, I am not a player hater.

It's not about Chad's involvement in the clubhouse or him being a cancer. It's about him being on a winning team so he can still get endorsement contracts. No one will want him to endorse their products if he plays for a losing football team. IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY... SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!!!!

He likes everyone when it goes well, but when things are tough he becomes the "poor little me" athlete. I am really sick of this clown and I hope that the Bengals just let him sit for the next 4 years. I know this will not happen but it would be nice to see an owner insist on a player sticking to his contract. You say we should call him "Pro Bowler"...I say we call him what he really is...."a selfish whiner who is not man enough to honor a contract he asked for".

As big a cancer as Chad is, the Bengals are just as bad. I am not an apologist for Chad. He apparently cannot live up to his commitments: won't honor contracts, not involved in his own childrens lives, etc, etc. But who can blame him for feeling the way he does about this team? They are spiraling out of control and will NEVER be a winner. They enabled (and rewarded via fat contract extension!) his behavior, what do they expect? Quite honestly, what do fans expect? Is Chad ANY different than ownership of this team? Chad will withold his services for more money. Big deal. The Bengals will withold their services (winning) for more money. You want to talk about contracts? The Bengals sold us the need for a new stadium, so they could be competitive. Did they honor their contract? I wouldn't want to play for this team either.

Hope he breaks both his knees. I can't recall a more self-centered, ungrateful malcontent than Johnson. He can go to the Pro Bowl and hopefully not finish his routes, drop critical passes and get his gold plated grill stuck in the turf again. Anyone who cares about the future of the Bengals will understand this boorish child needs to pack his stuff and leave.

spend your time covering an athlete that deserves it.

at 2/04/2008 6:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

as a former college and current professional athlete, i'd just like to say that this is a TEAM sport....this means that chad should be a TEAM player...but it also means that its the TEAM'S fault for not making it into the playoffs the past two years. now honestly, how many of you chad haters have played beyond high school? probably not too many. you're the ones who talk about how you could have gone to a small college to play a sport but you chose to just concentrate on school instead. everyone knows thats a load of BS. honestly, you have no room to speak cuz you don't know what team chemistry really comes from. do you really think that trading away the best receiver in franchise history is gonna make the difference? the problem with this franchise and city lies within mike brown, the media, and the fans. how can people like paul daugherty talk about winning a super bowl when the bengals haven't even gotten past the first round in so long. winning championships starts with a "d" and ends with "efense". lets really just think about this for a moment. the bengals defense has been the WORST in the league for quite some time. guys like rashad jeanty and justin smith don't really pose great threats on defense. its pretty much anchored by guys like smith (great first round pick by the way) and whatever linebackers are available off the street. the bengals have the smallest scouting department in the NFL and you (the fans) are saying the problem is with one of the few good draft picks they've made in chad. and yeah he's mouthed off and said some things that may upset you so called fans. so i'm gonna say the same thing you've said about him- GET OVER IT! and now, about tj- great player, great receiver, etc. but how come no one said anything about him when he stated that "next year i'm gonna lead the league in EVERYTHING" when asked about not getting any recognition for being the receptions co-champion with wes welker? so yeah, i think thats great logic from some of the worst fans in the country.

Yes, another INDIVIDUAL honor/award for a prima donna, whining, cry baby, wuss of a WR that has yet shown the maturity and ability to be a team player or leader of a team that helps his team to become better.

I think everyone would agree that he puts up great numbers and is very productive. But, especially the past two seasons, I also think that everyone would agree that he has had many dropped passes that should have been caught, has had questionable route running, and had trouble holding on to the ball(fumbles and drops) at crucial times during games.

That said, IMO, he is still a player that would be happy no matter what the team's record is, as long as he gets his numbers. Proof being in several games where Bengals have won without an "ocho cinco" dance, or huge number production, and the diva WR that is Chad, pouting about not getting the ball.

In becoming the consistent winning, playoff appearing team, all of us here want this team to be, to do so, would require becoming more physical. That goes for both sides of the ball. Meaning stop the run and pressure the qb, and controlling the ball and running it down opponents throats. This type of offense would and will not make "85" any happier, even though we would be winning games.

Unfortunately, for the Bengals, and those in Bengaldom, no matter how many games the Bengals win, "CJ" won't be happy unless every play is involving him.

Hate enough for you, kid????

Very nice MR. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE 6:14. You are right about mike brown. this team will never be a consistent winner with him at the helm. So, if baby cinqo wants out, baby cinqo never shoudl have signed that fat contract extension. Simple enough. It has nothing to do with the fans, the media, or any black helicopters you happen to see flying around the local bar as you participate in your "professional" dart league. Whether I've strapped on a jock or picked up a ball has nothing to do with my ability to identify a jack@ss.

Ginger --

Moss scored 23 TDs this year -- a new NFL record. He had over 1400 receiving yards. he also had a good, quiet, team-oriented year.

Tom Brady has said: "Wherever Randy goes, I'm going." (And I think he's only half-joking.)

Moss was surely worth the money to the Patriots this year, and the Patriots players seem to recognize that. Moss was hardly the reason they lost in the Super Bowl.

Oh -- back to our team . . . Chad is obviously very talented, and has played very well on the whole. His immaturity has hurt the team in the past and can't be helping now. I do wish he would grow up and stop acting so poorly. Chad is stopping himself from reaching his full potential. He does sound a lot like TO now.

The team should assess the options and trade or keep him depending on what they think is best for the team. If they decide to keep him -- hold him to his current contract.

We don't need you making the situation worse by airing your problems with him.

ANON 12:59 Don't blame the fans or the media. If you think CJ was not "beloved in this town, the you don't follow the Bengals, and have not been to a game in the past 5 years. Take a look at the number of 85 jerseys, listen to the reaction when he jogs down to the north end zone by himself. The fans loved him. Also he has publically blamed Marvin and 50 of his teammates, not the media. If he can't take a little criticism from the media, then he needs to stop seeking media attention.

When Johnson acts like a jerk, he gets treated like a jerk. He proves what a lousy team player he is. Just like his buddies T.O. and Moss.

He's a victim of his own poisonous stupidity.
As is Mike Brown, who sits in his castle in silence as his empire disintegrates beneath him.

If I were Brown, I'd set the record straight. I'd mention the $6 mil I pay the guy, the 3 times I tore up the ocntract to reward him, and the offense I take at his childish disregard for all those around him who helped him become a star.

Like most immature personality types, Johnson can't handle any criticism. Let him go to New York or Philly, the media will eat his Po' boy act up and spit him out in tears. Once again the Bengals are the laughing stock of the league, with M. Brown at the helm. ]

Without Palmer, Johnson goes to no pro bowls, unless he gets lucky. What a whiner. Get rid of the baby. Take away his rattle and high chair.

You think Jerry Rice would tell him to behave like this? not in a miillion years, but then JR had class, something Johnos has no idea about.

Jerry....

I am killing time.

I just thought i would argue with everybody and agree with them at the same time.

It really shows how stupid alot of the opinions (unions) on this blog are...

Including my own.

I would have to agree with the angry 12:59...

The market in this town is small. (that's all i agreed with)

Mike of the state that is to the left of West Virginia but kind of sits on top of Kentucky like a jerk (but right on the right side of Utah)

It is so amazing how when the Bengals had a winning season a few years back, all of you seemed to love Chad's celebrations. But, boy did all of you hypocrites change your attitude about it once the losing started up again.

I read in a national magazine the other day that Cincinnati has the worst fan and media base in all of the NFL, because of how quickly you turn on good players just because they may choose not to conform to your desires of how they should conduct themselves.

If I were Chad, I would purposely try and be traded to another team in the AFC North, just to come back and whip the Bengals and to give its fans a "great big finger" after I scored numerous times.

Give me a break all of you self-righteous hypocrites! Don't praise Chad one minute, and speak so negatively about him the next. And if you don't like him so much, go follow another team.

You have that right, because all of the poison you are spewing on the blogs is taking the enjoyment out of just simply loving the game.

anonymous with a race issue:
"if i'm Chad i hang up on mark also. let me get this straight, the same man who is on all the sports talk shows (except for wdbz) is all of the sudden going to call Chad and get a comment from chad as if they are friends. mark is a hack and so is Doc. if i'm Chad the only, ONLY media members i talk to are those on WDBZ. We all know what the hacks at Clearchannel are all about. mark and Doc are really no different than Willie and mcconnel. They know what get the "conservitive crowd" all riled up. A loudmouth, non boot licking reciever who likes to celebrate. Oh that is going to go over well in this small market, small minded town. But we love our Ryan freels and Josh hamilton's of the world. Only in Cincinnati."

Mark, Doc, Willie and McConnell(with two l's, you non-spelling hack) had nothing to do with "riling up the conservative crowd" in Cincy. This all the doing of one cry-babying, pouting when I don't get my touches, whining, selfish, loud-mouthed,wuss of a WR and his $ hungry agent.
Chad made his own bed with his "look and listen to me" tour during SB weeks, and now we'll see what happens. The local media, besides WDBZ, who by the way probably only has the listenership of 5???, has reported and opined(that means giving an opinion, since you probably have no clue) on the remarks of a disgruntled WR.

As for Cincy loving the Freel's and Josh Hamilton's, we also love Anthony Munoz(hispanic), Joe Morgan(african american), Max Montoya(hispanic), Reggie Williams(african american), Tony Perez(hispanic), Isaac Curtis(african american)....shall we go on???

Bottom line: Nice pathetic try using the race card, but when a player shoots off the way Chad Johnson has,of course he's gonna get a unpleasant response from most, no matter what ethnicity he is.

a terribly struggling business decided one year to hire an employee that they thought would help them turn around their continuous downslide in the economy. during his job interview, the owners saw that he was very enthusiastic and upbeat, something the company was lacking for the past few years. after years of hard work, the business made progress into becoming a more powerful corporation. that one person they hired wasnt the exact reason they had such great success. but he did have a lot to do with it because he brought a great deal of enthusiasm and positivity to the work environment. other people from different companies became interested and wanted to see what was going on. business was great. in fact, one year they were in the top 16 in the nation. however, great turmoil followed this success. a multiple number of employees got into trouble outside of work. as a matter of fact, one employee was in so much trouble that he was suspended from work without pay! but that one enthusiastic employee kept working hard. he tried not to let all those things bother him. he kept his same attitude but was criticized for it. then, he changed his attitude because he thought that's what people wanted. business got worse and everyone outside blamed him.

he decided not to even talk to anyone outside the corporation because he felt that if he didn't talk, then no one would misconstrue his words. instead, everyone blamed him for the recent downfall of the corporation. the owner kept quiet throughout the entire situation though. his name was brought up sporadically but no one really seemed to care. but that one employee (even though his work was amongst the top two in the entire organization and consistently amongst the top 5 in the country) was still blamed for everything. another department on the other side of this same business was failing in every aspect of their work. (this is the bengals defense if you don't know yet). now they were failing miserably. people were showing up late, missing tons of work, and the work they were doing was just adequate at best. no one really worked hard in that department but they didn't mind because in the end, it was that one employee that was gonna get the blame. now finally, that one employee got fed up with this. he expressed his anger within the business. once this happened, people outside decided that HE (not the failing department nor the other co-workers getting into trouble) needed to leave. apparently, his attitude suddenly became detrimental to the work environment. apparently, that same attitude that brought the entire corporation together all of a sudden tore it apart and brought the business down. coincidentally, the same time it was brought down was the same time that all those co-workers got into trouble/the struggling department's terrible work finally caught up to them. after voicing his opinion, everyone outside turned against him and decided that because it was HE who helped the corporation become more powerful, so it was HE who decided to bring them down.....FIGURE IT OUT YOU STUPID ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACKS!

hey whodey8188, a couple of those guys are in the hall of fame....so yeah you better like them..honestly, don't act like you know what you're talking about until you've played sports at least collegiately...and as for people comparing him to the T.O. situation, you're totally wrong. T.O. was coming off a year where his team went to the Super Bowl. chad is coming off a year where his team went 7-9 with losses to san franscisco and arizona. chad is supposedly wanting out of a terribly situation. T.O. was wanting out of a great situation.

Just becuase a person didn't play sports in college or the pros doesn't preclude them from making observations, or even having an opinion on sports. Whoever is trying to make the point that you can't has some serious flaws in their logic. First, this country is built on freedome of speech, so I'll say whatever I want. Second, hundreds of millions of people vote every four years on a president without having ever been in politics. Third, just becuase you played sports in college or the pros doesn't mean you're smart enough to give advice. Just look at a few of the recent Bengals drafts to see that you're not all Rhodes scholars. Scoreboard.

1:21...you're right that you don't have to play sports collegiately or professionally to understand the game....but what you don't understand is the stuff that really affects the team WITHIN the clubhouse or locker room. the chemistry within the team is something that you can talk about and say what you want but in no way shape or form can you expect to be seen as someone with any form of credibility until you have played at a higher level. if you are in the locker room every day and the bengals see you as a member of their team then yeah you can say something and sound credible. but you're not in the locker room. you don't know what's going on. all you know is what another NON-athlete is writing about without even considering that he may even fabricate the incident just so that he can create a story. i'm not claiming to know everything just because i play a team sport professionally. but i am saying that its not fair for people to label him a cancer when they really don't know whats going on inside that locker room or any other locker room. at least get an idea of what really goes on within a team and then say something with some background and knowledge of what a cancer really may be.1:21...you're right that you don't have to play sports collegiately or professionally to understand the game....but what you don't understand is the stuff that really affects the team WITHIN the clubhouse or locker room. the chemistry within the team is something that you can talk about and say what you want but in no way shape or form can you expect to be seen as someone with any form of credibility until you have played at a higher level. if you are in the locker room every day and the bengals see you as a member of their team then yeah you can say something and sound credible. but you're not in the locker room. you don't know what's going on. all you know is what another NON-athlete is writing about without even considering that he may even fabricate the incident just so that he can create a story. i'm not claiming to know everything just because i play a team sport professionally. but i am saying that its not fair for people to label him a cancer when they really don't know whats going on inside that locker room or any other locker room. at least get an idea of what really goes on within a team and then say something with some background and knowledge of what a cancer really may be.

To Anon 2/7, 1:21 PM,

Yes, you do have your freedom of speech to express your opinion regarding getting rid of Chad, but those of us who support him have the same freedom also.

Most of the people who post on this board are negative jerks, and are constantly that way. I don't blame this bad season all on Chad's antics either, I fault the inept offense, defense, the local media and many bandwagon fans who before the regular season began, were and still are so negative.

Going into next season, maybe if many of you negative fans would shut up for a change, the players would feel encouraged to have a good one.

Anon 2/07 4:09 PM: Again, playing in college or the pros is no different than playing on any team regarding the dynamics of a locker room. High school sports, a corporate team, whatever; people are people and it is still the same. Anon 2/07 4:19 PM: I never said get rid of Chad. Oh, and sure, it's the Bengal FANS causing the problems. How exactly is that again? We've been supporting a loser franchise with a loser owner for decades with 1 winning season to show for it. We get bent out of shape due to the debacle with Chad that the TEAM enabled to happen. That's right, the team created this mess. Our pateience starts to wear thin and we voice our displeasure, but now we're 'negative jerks' and 'fairweather'? Dude, people like you are the sheep and lemmings the Brown family needs to keep this farce going. What a bunch of tree-hugging, left wing, BS. Like I care about the feelings of these overpaid athletes. They get paid, lots of money, to play. What I say on this blog should have ZERO effect on a professional athletes frame of mind regarding the game. Again, failed logic.
