Yellow journalism

We have been characterized with practicing "yellow journalism" and "sensationalizing" comments made earlier this week by Chad Johnson's by linking to NFL Network's clip.

I want to thanks readers for the comments posted here, every last one of them; you add to the discussion. Simply put, Chad Johnson did make the comments, and we think it is newsworthy when a key Bengals player says he would like to play elsewhere.

Another NFL Network clip (give it a few seconds to load):

I agree with you. I ti snot like you summarized what he said... you linked to the viseo clip.

People should be mad at Johnson's agent, not you

Mark,

People are just looking for someone to blame for the way Chad Johnson is acting.

I'm sure you've heard he punctuated those comments in Phoenix today, on Rome's show.
Best thing to do is to facilitate his departure ASAP. Eliminate the problem now, before it festers. And Mark, don't let the anonymous posters/Chad apologists bother you. It's their myopic narrow-mindedness that have helped create the beast. Although supremely talented, Chad Johnson has worn out his welcome, as Dillon and Perkins did before him. Once he signed on with Rosenhaus, it was just a matter of time.

"yellow journalism" and "sensationalizing" So let me get thi straight, mark wants some type of sympathy because he has been called out for being the FRAUD that he is and is perceived to be? Give me a frickn break mark. You are the same hack/blogger/wannabe sports talk host who made up some garbage ass stat about "80% of carson Palmer's errant throws were the result of RECEIVERS RUNNING THE WRONG ROUTE"? Did Antrolr Role run the right damn route when he intercepted Carson four frickn times while taking two interceptions back for Touchdowns? It's like that fraud C. Trent rosecranns, this is the same guy who tried to make Brandon phillips out to be a bad guy because he had the "balls" to call out Josh hamilton, Homer baily. If you all remember, trnt wrote that Brandon was causing a "rift in the clubhouse" and a players did not want to retreive brandaon's glove while going out to his position because some players thought Brandons's "hot dogging" would put other players in "harms way". What a bunch of CRAP!!!! Kida sounds like the crap the media in this town is trying to make Chad out to be. No one hates on it's athletes more than Cincinnati. Yes, it is caller "yellow journalism" and here is the proof.

at 1/30/2008 2:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes but how about you guys falsely blowing this out of proportion in the first place based on a false Chris Mortensen report? Oh yeah...and btw, that's when Chad went silent until he demanded a trade. Yes he's acting like a two year old but you and others provided the spark and to act like you didn't and not apologize for those FALSE reports, which were FALSE at the time because they were based on FALSE report, is ridiculous.

To everyone who says we should trade this guy....just think of the gaping hole at receiver that this would leave.

Mark,
take pity on these poor people. They really don't know any better. These are the same people who sell out games for an owner who doesn't care and they truly believe that the super bowl is within their reach EVERY YEAR. one playoff game in 17 years. It's easy to sell fools gold to a fool. They have been force fed this crap so long they now believe it. Don't pay any attention to the elephant in the room, blame the media. Enjoy your next playoff game in 2022!

thats the problem with blogs, people dont think to look for the link and instead think that the person writing is making this story up. I really dont think that was the goal especially when the link was posted and visible. I hope everyone feels stupid for making those comments about this writer being a liar. Dumb Dumb Dumb people

Chad was at it again today on Jim Rome. He wants to be traded and should be, he said he would go to Chicago with McNabb so trade him there. The guy needs to go soon for the better.

at 1/30/2008 2:55 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, i missed the "link" that showed "80% of the errant passes thrown by Carson were the result of wrong routes". Could you give me that "link" again? Talk about dumb, dumb, dumb people. The media depends on fools like you because they know the idiots in this town can't think for themselves. Where were the report about Josh hamilton being a "
cancer" inside the Red's clubhouse? Get my point? Stupid conservitive fans

Mark, it's not so much yellow journalism as it is lack of good journalism. Why didn't you give us a little more info about where you heard/saw it and maybe added a little context? Posting a nebulous, two sentence entry on your blog is irresponsible. I hope it was an oversight on your part and not a cheap attempt to garner more hits.

at 1/30/2008 3:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mark, I'm not sure what they posters are saying - I enjoy reading your blog as it is probably the best source of unbiased (non-bengal employed) inside information available on a regular basis. Your insight and analysis help us fans get a sense for what is truly going on inside the locker room. Keep up the good work!

I just heard CJ on a nationally syndicated radio show continue his tirade on how he has been wrongly blamed for the 2007 season and that "Housh" and Carson are the only people who didn't turn on him or as he was asked, "had his back".

I'll be the first to criticize Marvin Lewis, but the disrespect Chad is showing to the person who has really stuck his neck on the line for "the self pronounced" Ocho Cinco is sad!!!

Two things Chad:

"It wasn't me"--learn the word accountability because your lack of "accountability" is what people have grown tired of...

"numbers can be deceiving"--- you proclaim that you produced, so how can you blame me? Let's not forget that you were the benefactor of an anemic running game and an offense that had to play catch up for most of the games in 2007. Additionally, lets remember the short armed drop in Buffalo which should have been an easy TD and the failed TD grab at the end of the SF game----both plays that arguably sealed the Bengals fate in those games. Alleged "Bigtime" players make that big time grab, instead of short arming a catch b/c he has been bumping his gums since the team got off the bus!!!!

The unfortunate thing is the Bengals will never get the top compensation that Chad thinks he is worth b/c he is on the downside of his career. That's not hating, that's the reality that the NFL is a young man's league.

Good luck Chad.

And to those that worry about the gapping hole at WR, the worse that the Bengals can do is not make the playoffs and that is likely to occur with or without him. Let him take his selfish side show somewhere else.

Chad is acting like a spoiled rotten teenager. Rather than shut up and work when things get hard, he whines and cries about his self-esteem. He thinks he has it tough here? Imagine what it would be like in Oakland!

He says he wants to get to the Super Bowl, but then says he's interested in... Miami? The one-win Miami? The Cleo Lemon-quarterbacked Dolphins? That's logical.

The sad thing is, he will be rewarded for this display of childishness. Either the Bengals will buck up and support him out of fear of losing their star, or he'll get traded to another team and receive exactly what he wants. If neither of those things happen, he'll just hold out.

At this point, that seems like one of the best options, doesn't it? Isn't that sad?

If 2 are for him and 51+ all the staff are against him, why on earth does he think he's the one that's right? Does he have a David & Goliath complex? Seems to me more of a Roger Clemens versus the baseball world situation to me.

Chad, being in the minority does not mean you are being slighted - in this case, it means you are wrong. Grow up. Oh, and I hope you owe your future signing bonus to the Bengals a la T.O., your apparent idol.

Hey... Case and point huh? I didnt quite agree with the whole 80% thing either (80% on incompletions that someone had done something wrong) but never the less i have never found you to be a bias writer. I dont know what Yellow Journalism is and if someone could please explain, that would be nice. ALL I KNOW IS NO MATTER WHAT THE COLOR OF YOUR JOURNALISM -WHITE, BLACK, OR YELLOW- IT IS WORKING. YOU HAVE THE HOTTEST BLOG IN THE CITY. GOOD LUCK!

Is everybody kidding?Chad is upset and darn well should B!He is the man when the Bengals R winning and the problem when they r losing because of the media.Chad IS the best reciever on the team and should be treated with respect. His so called "antics" are involved with a GAME!He made football fun and enjoyable in cincinnati again and until people see that,he will continue to "be the bad guy".I love what he has done on and off of the field. If u feel the need to judge him . . .Do your homework first.

It's apparent that a good portion of Cincinnati fans have lost their minds. This has nothing to do with the media. This is all just a blatant attempt by an agent to get a better contract and an obvious indication that Chad is much more immature than we all thought. Aww did the media and some fans say your celebrating is the cause of the bengals losing? Poor baby. Anybody with half of a working brain knows the reason the bengals were in the tank is because of it's defense and inability to run the football. But Chad you are the star, you talk the smack so when we lose you get some of the blame. Grow up and deal with it. The smart people love you and your effort on sunday's but please stop acting as if you are in the 3rd grade and someone stole your favorite toy. As for the people ragging on Mark. Do us all a favor and go to bed! He reports on what is said. GDG what else do you want? He didnt need to prefice the post. It was a video of exactly what chad said. Mark you do a great job and all of us sane people know and respect that.

Chad wants to be traded because he will lose his marketability to endorse products if he plays for a losing team. He makes just as much in sponsorship as he does on the field. Case closed.

Give me a break! Mark speaks the truth and Chad's just being Chad, always stirring the pot. The Bengals had a miserable 2007 season for lots of reasons; i.e. O-line problems, LB problems, returner problems, etc. If we were winning, know one would care what Chad says. As Al Davis says, "Just win baby!" Everyone just chill out. However, if the Bengals and Marvin have any common sense, they better call Chad to the principals office and air it out or this will be a cancer. If he really doesn't want to be in Cincy, trade him. Frankly, I'm over all this BS and just want to see 53 happy Who Dey's at PBS on Sundays in the fall.

my comment is that if chad really wants to be traded, then trade him for shaun rogers and a high/mid-round draft pick and go on,if not sit chad`s ass find out what`s what

what it really so sad about all this, is that it all started Paul Daugherty's article. look it up, the same week he wrote his opinion that Chad should be traded, Chad stopped talking to the media, and you cant blame him.

at 1/30/2008 5:21 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cincinnati Media has and always be second tier. Whether it be a blog writer or Daugherty - it's all the same schwag and drama.

Sick of the media said

"Kida sounds like the crap the media in this town is trying to make Chad out to be"

Did you not hear the Jim Rome interview. Chad HIMSELF put the writing on the wall. And if you listen to what CHAD HIMSELF said, the problems are from "Somebody in-house" i.e the players, and from what CHAD SAID it is every player except TJ and Carson.

It’s not the media or the fans causing the need for Chad to leave it is the players, coaches and organization.

at 1/30/2008 5:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure I understand why people are so up in arms over this. Chad has gone on every possible national radio and television show pleading his case to be traded. Why do people think that the media has created this? Just turn on ESPN... I saw Chad in 3 different interviews today and he said the same thing every time. Why people are such Chad apologists, I don't understand. If he wants to go somewhere else, than we should explore that opportunity. Sometimes you have to make drastic changes to improve.

at 1/30/2008 6:10 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Regardless of all this. The Bengals need Ocho and Ocho needs the Bengals. Chad has been Chad (whether it was the 11-5 season or the last 2) so I don't know why (if they even are) they want to make him the scapegoat. If they trade him, what are you getting in return? We saw what happened to the offense when we only had two legit wrs (before henry came back).

at 1/30/2008 8:46 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

"yellow Journalism"....What?
For thse of you complaining about Mark's piece...look at the facts. did you guys hear Chad today, Him and his Shark(chad's words) know exactly what they are doing. Today is a premeditated act in order to get him out of here. He was just on a Charlotte station where he has told John Fox to call him as well. All I have to say is Adios Ocho Cinco, i'm tired of defending him and won't do it anymore. See Ya Cory...i mean Ocho Cinco!

at 1/30/2008 8:58 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK, let's look at this rationally. If Chad gets his trade, what do the Bengals get in return? Surely, it is some significant draft picks, cash, or....? What are the cap implications to the Bengals and the other team? I don't think it would make financial sense for either side, so the whole thing may be a tempest in a teapot.

at 1/30/2008 9:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would Bengals put the interview front page on their website? What is going on here?

at 1/30/2008 9:58 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love how people cry that Cincy is tougher on its athletes than anywhere else. You think New York, Boston/New England, Philly, Pittsburgh, or Cleveland are easier on their players than Cincy is? Give me a break.

If Chad wants out, he'd better be ready to sit, because I'd be damned if I eat nine mil for expecting someone to do the job they signed a contract vowing they would do. And my name isn't Mike Brown, folks.

Douchenhaus is the root cause, but Chad needs to be his own person and man up. That sure doesn't seem to be happening, now does it?

at 1/30/2008 10:11 PM Blogger Jaybee said...

Someone needs to explain to Chad the realities of contract law. I think he
needs to be held to the contract he willingly signed and shut his mouth. If he doesn't want to play, fine, but he should not be allowed to leave until after the end of his contract - 010. Then let him see how valuable his skill set will be. I have no sympathy for him and his campaign to leave town but I also think it's time people stood up and said, "Enough!" No one
twisted Chad's arm to sign the contract. And maybe it's time for the people who "have his back" to tell him about the facts of life.

I applaud you, Mark, for reporting the facts and letting the people who have no opinion show their true colors.

at 1/30/2008 11:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Really, who can blame Chad for wanting out - if he really does? This is a poorly ran team, plain and simple. Maybe he just wants to win. Is he any more selfish than the owner?

YEAH !!! Pretty Good, Chad I love you...

Get out Fu**nny stupid puppet, you have nothing to do around us ! It's OK.

See you to the Super Bowl next season, Cincy-Miami...

Chad Johnson needs to man-up. If he wants out then he should say so instead of using the passive aggresive technique that is usually favored by spoiled teen girls. His dysfunctional/sociopathic personallity should be perged anyway. Look how well the Giants are doing without their "little princess" Shockey. The Bengals could benifit by a simular adition by subtraction.

Mark I find it funny how people will criticize and then hide behind Anon. Just imagine the reaqction if you or Doc tried that.
As far as posting a reaction to Chad I'd suggest people do it on his webpage. Let's face it Chad is probably not reading local blogs. If you want to let him know how digusted you are w/ his antics email him. Maybe just maybe he does read email to his webpage.

That interview was like pulling teeth- Ocho seemed very hesitant to say anything . So why appear on nfl network at the superbowl ?
Another in a series of mistakes ie....
1. few yac during season
2.several yards short then backing out of bounds on 4th down
3.running mouth but not wanting to be a team leader
4.sitting on ground pouting after fumble instead of tackling opponent
5.laughing with belicheat instead of huddling with teammates to figure out solution to our offensive woes

i have been a hugh chad johnson supporter since day 1 and have consistently defended him over the years. I looked forward to watching him grow as a player (lets not pretend his game is beyond reproach) and person. is anyone else concerned about chad's mental health? his ramblings are often incoherent, as if he is drunk. if not, the alternative is almost worse. could it be he is simply an ignorant, immature, low class, selfish, publicity-whore? i for one hope a weekend a betty ford or some prozac cures what ailes him. in the meantime the 85 jersey stays in the closet.

I see you added a line to your post regarding the source of your information. It's so easy for us to criticize your work. I think most of us could not imagine having a job where virtually all of our work is open to intense public scrutiny with the resulting comments and critiques published for the world to see. Hang in there and keep the tough skin.

Hey whatever generates the most hits on your blog, most attention in front of your bosses.

I hope you get a big raise.

I suggest the Enquirer really go after this opportunity. Start an entire new blog/section which does nothing but follow around Chad and ask him if he's happy, analyzing every sound bite anytime he speaks publicly.

All Chad, All the time!

at 1/31/2008 11:54 AM Blogger oldtimer said...

Face it, Chad's an attention whore. It's a two-edged sword, and cuts the one wielding it just as quickly as the one it's directed at.

Based on his increasingly bizarre touchdown celebrations, his paper-thin veneer for shedding criticism, and his unabashed adolation of me-first guys like T,O, and Moss, how can anyone be surprised by this, the latest in a long line of erratic and self-absorbed behavior?

Just once I wish he woulda run straight back to Carson after a touchdown pass, celebrated with him and the o-line for the team's sake, and skipped the whole flash and smoke show. If I wanted a good show, I'd go to Vegas, not watch Chad Johnson.

Whst did that great big sign in Cleveland say? Oh, yeah........."85; All Bling And No Ring". Truer words never spoken.

Course Mike Brown will keep him another two years and let the cancer metastacize. Just watch.

ANON 9:58PM is right, Cincinnati is soft on their athletes.

Sick of the media said
"No one hates on its athletes more than Cincinnati."

That is the biggest joke I have ever heard. In fact pretty much every city hates on its athletes more than Cincy.

In Philly McNabb in 8 season as a starter guided his team to
6 playoffs
4 Conference Championships
1 Super bowl
But the fans booed him since day one

New York, their fans hate A-Rod, the best player in MLB for putting up MVP numbers every year.

Neither of these player ever came out and ask teams around the league to "call me" but yes we are driving him out of town.

This is all a carefully calculated plan designed by that worm agent of his to get more money. This is the same man who masterminded the whole T.O. thing and we all saw how that worked out. We are headed down the same path.

I don't see any sensationalism here. You're just reporting on what you are seeing. Chad said these things. I'm sure he really didn't expect anyone in the local media to pick up on it, right? And as far as the 80% stat, that came from a source inside the Bengals organization. No yellow journalism there, and no one even called out Chad by name there.

He's just a whiney brat. Hopefully he'll continue not speaking to the local media next year. I've heard enough for my lifetime from the great and powerful Chad.

The Bengals have had many "cancers" since 1991 in the locker room - Carl Pickens, Dan Wilkinson, Corey Dillon and now Chad Johnson. The people of Cincinnati can either say let's continue to rid the locker room of this cancer OR realize that the Cincinnati Bengals will never be a winner as long as ownership is held by Mike Brown. Mike Brown is the only constant in this era of losing and it truly is surprising that he has yet to hire a GM or reinvest in the franchise to truly make it a winner. I don't blame Chad - he wants to be on a contender and he realizes, like those players before him, that Mike Brown will never be able to field a playoff caliber team.
