Roster analysis: Linebackers

Seventh in a series

Today: Linebackers

Starters: Strong-side linebacker Rashad Jeanty, middle linebacker Landon Johnson, weak-side linebacker Dhani Jones

Backups: Ahmad Brooks, Anthony Schlegel, Corey Mays, Roy Manning, Jim Maxwell, Caleb Miller, Lemar Marshall, Eric Henderson, Odell Thurman

Four linebackers -- Brooks, Miller, Marshall and Henderson -- were lost early in the season to the injured reserve list. Miller, Marshall, Johnson and Jones are all eligible for free agency. The Bengals have made offers to Jones and Johnson that Jones is likely to accept but Johnson reject.

Johnson moved to middle linebacker and led the defense in tackles for the third time in four seasons. Still, he appears to be under-valued by the Bengals. Miller is gone. If Marshall is healthy after tearing his Achilles' tendon, he is a valuable and productive player.

The key here is Brooks, a potential dominating force in the middle who played well in the opener but aggravated a groin injury covering a kickoff in Week 2. He had surgery, and if he can put together a second consecutive strong offseason in the weight room and classroom, the Bengals have a real gem to build around defensively.

As is the case at running back, offseason decisions by the front office and solid, productive rehab programs for the players are vital if the Bengals want to avoid the chaos that afflicted their defense in 2007.

The linebackers have a new position coach in Jeff FitzGerald. Thurman, suspended by the NFL for the past two seasons, received permission to begin working out with the team. That decision most likely will lead to his reinstatement.

Question: Let's say the Bengals are switching to the three-lineman, four-linebacker base. Without adding players, though you can re-sign any of the free agents, who are your four starting linebackers in 2008?

Ideally, you'd let Landon Johnson walk and have Jeanty and Geathers on the outside with Brooks and Thurman in the middle... However, you can't trust Thurman anymore than you can that Brooks will stay healthy. So they better make sure they keep Johnson who is nothing but class, durable, and dependable.

You need to resign Jones and Johnson the starting 4 would be Jones,Brooks,Johnson,Gathers. Thurman and Jenty can rotate in. Do you try to keep Miller for special teams? If all goes well and no one gets hurt this is a good LB core.

Re-sign Johnson and Jones. Prefferably in the perfect world of this situation. The starters would be Johnson, Brooks, Thurman, and Jones with pleanty of Geathers and Jeanty in the mix - both of who are better designed for a 3-4 anyways. This question also depends on what we do with the Line as well. When you do a 3-4 you must have bigger line men to help take up more than on blocker. Unless we sign a good lineman (Rogers...cough....or Haynesworth...cough) or draft a good lineman we may be better off in a 4-3. LETS HOPE BROOKS CAN STAY HEALTHY AND THURMAN CAN STAY OUT OF TROUBLE- AND BE BACK TO HIS 05 FORM!!!

If we go to a 3-4, I don't see how there will be room for Pollack to play DE...he is not fit to play in that sort of scheme (actually he is a perfect 3-4 LB).

I think this move to a 3-4 is stupid but I'll bite. If the Bengals are serious about competing they will bring back Johnson and Jones. Assuming Johnson comes back the lineup would probably be Geathers, Brooks, Johnson and Jeanty. That leaves Jones, Thurman and Henderson to backup. Jones is a backup on a good team. Johnson may not be an all-pro but he is a solid performer, sure tackler (something this team hasn't been good at) and turns 27 in March.

I think we should go to the 3-4 and we have to sign landon johnson. Thurman and Brooks in the middle, Landon and Jeanty/Geathers on the edges. That could be the first NFL caliber group we've had in a long time. The Defensive line still needs so much work though. Whether the 4-3 or 3-4...the defensive line needs to get some push.

I said it under another thread, I'll say it again: re-sign Landon Johnson. Others have also said it, but it's worth repeating, he's tough, durable, team-oriented and not a trouble maker. He's not a pro bowler but he does make plays. I understand the excitement over O'Dell, but to me, Ahmad didn't flash anywhere near as close as Thurman. Still, neither one, for different reasons, as proven reliable. Why re-sign Jones if you are serious about Landon? Both are best at WLB. Take the moderate money Jones would get and add that to an offer to a TE or perhaps a No. 3 WR (hey that's being a smart GM, get a no. 3 incase Henry isn't available, which duh, is likely) or a no. 3 CB once we axe Deltha.

In a perfect world (no injuries or suspensions) our linebacking unit could go from a huge problem last season to one of the best units in football next season. Brooks and Thurman could both be dominate in the middle of a 3-4. I think we re-sign both Johnson and Jones as we will need to keep 8 total linebackers in a 3-4. Pollack is suited to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 but he has stated he will only come back as a d-lineman because of the high impact collisions from the linebacking spot. He could be a great situational pass rusher from the DE position in obvious passing situations. Thus, we could have a starting 4 linebackers of Johnson, Brooks, Thurman, and Geathers. With a backup foursome of Jones, Jeanty, Henderson and a FA or draft choice we could really have a solid line backing corps. Lastly, add a 1st round draft choice to the d-line, sign a top line FA d-lineman and our front seven compares favorably with any in the AFC, and especially any in the AFC North.

The 3-4 defense will be more determined by who they get in the draft than who is available at LB. They need Ellis (DT-USC). He'll tie up two blockers. If they get him, look for Johnson as SSLB, Jeanty and/or Geathers at WSLB, and Brooks & Thurman in the middle.

I think that everyone that left a comment on here is dreaming. What makes you think that our linebacking core is any good at all? Caleb Miller, Landon Johnson, Rashaed Jeanty- they are all no good. They didn't do anything this season. Yeah we had injuries- but they didn't do anything! Why does everyone think that we would be any good? Stick with 4-3. If we switch to a 3-4 then it will just be another year where we are "adjusting" AGAIN!

I just don't think that the LB corps. are trust worthy at this point.Jones & Johnson should be resigned,Jones as a backup & ST player, Johnson as a starter(He's earned that)

Brooks,Thurman,Pollack,Marshall,& Henderson are all what-if's at this point,Not to be counted on.Sure if they are healthy then we get double the pleasure,if not healthy then they better not repeat the scenerio from last season.(Picking up scrap heap of the FA wire)

This was the problem last offseason, the front office & coaching department were just sitting still in the water, waiting to see if the guys they already had(Who were already paid for at a MB rate) were going to step up and play.

Well to say the least; The plan backfired!!!Bengals need a FA stud veteran LB to lead this corp.,draft well, maybe a possible trade for some LB help, and for sure fix the D-line.You fix the right problems & next thing you know this defense is great.

Footnote:I always thought that CB scheme played a part in the Defense failure this past season, but the Bengals are going to have to spend to win!!!!

To 12:56PM

"Pollack is suited to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 but he has stated he will only come back as a d-lineman because of the high impact collisions from the linebacking spot."

I think he said he wouldn't do 4-3 OLB because of the collision risk. He WANTED to be a 3-4 OLB because they line up close to LOS and see more side-impact than head-on. I may have read his interview wrong.

To the question ...

3-4 COULD be a good switch. But the personnel may not be perfect at LB. Geathers didn't really perform at rush LB, and he was supposed to be the best option. why would Jeanty or Henderson be better? And do we really want a rush LB worrying about breaking his neck everytime he goes for a sack?

In a perfect world, we 1) stay in a 4-3; 2) keep Johnson and Jones for another year; 3) get Thurman and Brooks back to form; 4) evaluate Pollack/Geathers/Henderson/Jeanty for their value at 3-4 OLB; draft 3-4 lineman and LBs. Then we make the switch next year.

Two things mark:
1. They have to resign Landon Johnson. He is the most solid and versitile on the group.
2. They have to draft a LB, preferably in the second or third round. A playmaker at LB can definetly be found in the 2nd round.

Question for you mark: With so many draft picks (I have heard the Bengals have 11) there is no way they will keep ll rookies, wouldn't it make sense to package a couple picks to try and move up in the second round? There is no need to move up in the first round they are sitting pretty there, but they may be able to get two impact defensive players with a trade up in the second or third round.

The Bengals' current crop of LB's are a bunch of ?'s, a CFL player and the leading tackler the last few years, on a very bad defense, who never seems to make plays on behind the LOS or anywhere else (he just tackles people downfield).

They need to upgrade their LB corps still, in the worst way. Certainly adding a stud DT or DE would help the current crop play better if that's the way they go.

Anonymous 2:07 got half of it right.

Signing LJohnson is key for continuity sake. He is not spectacular, but steady and usually stays healthy.

Most really good NFL defense have VETERAN linbebackers, so I disagree with spending a hi draft pick this year on a young inexperience LB. I'd rather dump Deltha's salary and us that money to a FA like Suggs, or even better a guy the new DC has worked with who can impart his will/leadership on the new D.

For gods sake, leave Geathers on the DE and let him do his job, speed rush.

Between all the other rehabs (Pollack, Thurman) and retreads (Jones) we should have enough bodies (Jeanty, Brooks) to complete for jobs until something better comes along, in future drafts.

First, to those who want a 3-4, it won't work in Cincy. We have to find a way to stop the run with 4 guys up front before we can think of having just 3. Second, to those people who say Geathers at any LB position, wrong....., he is not a LB, he is a DE. He is so good of an athlete that he was able to fill the hole, but why take a very, very good DE (that we desperately need) and move him around (that is why the Bengals are always loosing), we don't fix problems we create more. Third, to those who think our LB are question marks, you are right, but so is every other player on every team. You can't predict injuries, so anyone hurt or not hurt last year means absolutely nill this year. THE LB CORPS IS THE STRONGEST POSITION ON THE TEAM, yeah I said it. I would say second next to the WR, but old Ocho Cinco is really trying to cut that apart. Realistically, the starters and depth of the LB are top 5 in the league. Granted, there are some FA to sign, but until they sign somewhere else, I consider them coming back. MY ANALYSIS OF THE LINEBACKERS IS THIS: Fix the Defensive Line..... If the Bengals draft like they should, and sign a DT (Haynesworth/Allen), we would make the playoffs........maybe!

I love the idea of going to a 3-4. I feel the starters will be D.POLLACK-O.THURMAN-A.BROOKS-R.GEATHERS. D.Pollack did say he would play OLB in a 3-4. I feel like the bengals are in a good position to sign Terrell Suggs. His LB coach is here already. The D-Line should be S.ELLIS-D.PEKO-F.RUCKER. DB- J.JOSEPH-L.HALL S- M.WHITE-C.Ninduke

Best defensive setup is to be able to switch back and forth from a 4-3 to a 3-4, similar to what the Ravens and Patriots do. In this scenario, keep LB's: Brooks, Johnson, Jeanty, Jones, Thurman, Henderson. DL: Geathers, Peko, Rucker, Thornton, Pollack?, Fanene, rookie Ellis?, and another big guy like Peko to rotate in the 3-4 alignment. In the 4-3, starting front seven would be: DE- Geathers, Pollack/Rucker;DT- Peko, Ellis/Thornton; LB- Brooks, Johnson, Jeanty. In the 3-4: DE-Rucker, Ellis/Thornton; NT- Peko; ILB- Brooks, Thurman/Johnson; OLB- Pollack/Jeanty, Geathers. Draft DL, LB's are already in place!!

Why is anyone speculating about where Pollack might play, or what defense would suit him best? While his improvement is encouraging, I'll bet there is less than a 10% chance that David Pollack ever again takes the field in uniform. If the Bengals were to make any decisions about their defense, and have Pollack as a factor in those decisions, they deserve another 15 years of miserable football. Let's be realistic.
