Roster analysis: Wide receivers

Fourth in a series

Today: Wide receivers

Starters: Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh

Backups: Chris Henry, Glenn Holt, Antonio Chatman, Tab Perry (injured reserve), Marcus Maxwell, Bennie Brazell (injured reserve)

Johnson and Houshmandzadeh had huge statistical seasons. Houshmandzadeh tied New England's Wes Welker for the NFL lead with 112 receptions and made the Pro Bowl. Johnson broke his single-season franchise mark with 1,440 receiving yards but is now sulking and saying if he is indeed a problem that he should be traded.

It's a mistake to think Houshmandzadeh could post such good numbers without Johnson's presence on the field. So forget the idea that the Bengals should trade Johnson -- they won't -- and promote Henry to starter. The overall production would fall off dramatically.

Still, for a veteran group, the receivers at times showed a lack of professionalism and made fundamental mistakes in route running. Palmer, who wasn't as sharp with his accuracy as in season's past, made veiled comments that the constant complaints from his top receivers wore him out as the disappointing season wore down. Henry was inconsistent after coming back from his eight-game NFL suspension.

Perry will try to come back from a second lost season because of his hip injury. Chatman is an unrestricted free agent. Don't be surprised if the Bengals use a third- or fourth-round draft pick on a wide receiver.

Question: How, if at all, would you change the composition of the wide receiver group?

It won't be popular but the guy to trade from this group is Housh. His value will never be higher and his success is due to Johnson anyway. Housh should be worth a 2nd round pick.

Was I the only person impressed by Glen Holt this year? Not necessarily as a kick returner (where he fumbled too many times), but he seemed to be a solid receiver who caught the ball and ran good routes. I recall a few gams this year where I thought he was the only one on the field playing with any fire. And didn't he get a concussion laying out for a ball that he caught? I don't think he supplants CJ or Housh, but he seems like a good guy to keep on the roster.

Not hard to understand !
Stop selfish, Bengals must become a Team.
Bye Bye overpaid Chad, Rudi and Justin... Trade them for young 2008 Draft talents !!!

Bengals need to rebuild

To the First guy talking about a Housh trade. Shut up. There is nothing wrong with our receiving core. Are people around this place just getting way to antsy to make some sort of trade. Is there really a finger that just has to be pointed. Chad was childish this year but so was this town and the media. I support what he said to an extent. Look at every other team. No matter how stupid someone acts a player on that team will stick up for him. But No, we get one taste of cheap glory in 05 and all of the sudden we expect so much out of our players. Last year and 06 were not a hoax. We lost key players. WAIT NEVERMIND- CHADS DANCES CAUSED US TO LOSE THE SEASON! You realize if it wasnt for CHAD then you wouldnt have the came production out of TJ, Henry, or any of the other recievers. There was many-a-ball over thrown by carson that nobody else could have caught, "CHAD DID". people also call him a whimp. He will hit the ground harder than any other receiver that has played the game. THINK ABOUT ANY RECEIVER EVER... WHO ON THAT LIST HAS MADE THE CATCHES LIKE CHAD HAS, AND THEN LANDED IN THE MOST AWKWARD POSITION THAT HE HAS. NO NO NO, HE IS THE PROBLEM. Give me a break. WHO DEY!!!

I'm with the previous poster. If you trade any of the receivers, it has to be Housh.

They do not need to trade any of the receivers. I think the biggest difference will come from the running game and Kenny Irons or Chris Perry. The offense is going to be potent next year.

to call Chad selfish is one thing and possibly and understatement. but Justin and Rudi... Justin didnt decide that contract, infact most good players hate being tagged when they could rather get long term money. so there goes that blow, and number two. Rudi had most of his carries swollowed up by Kenny Watson (if you dont remember he has been our Third String RB for a couple years now) and rudi didnt say a word. If getting your plays taken by a second stringer - who was a third stringer, and if Irons and Perry would have been healthy he would have been a fourth stringer- isnt a huge blow to a once great runner ego i dont know what is. he didnt say a peep. So lets try to get this right. justin and rudi are not very productive for the money and yes we should trade them. KEEP CHAD!!!!!

Other teams would kill to have a core of receivers like ours. People need to stop believing ESPN and get off Chad's back. He was the best thing since sliced bread a year or two ago. Short memories!!!

I think the receiving core is one of the areas that the Bengals don't need to worry about. With Housh, Chad and Henry at receiver and Carson tossing the ball, the offense will be fine.

If the Bengals had a defense and a running game, they would win 4-5 more games and all the complaints would go away.

get rid of Chad? Are you people retarded? This isn't boring baseball, in football it's o.k. to have "great athletes" on your team. You trade chad you trade away the only cool thing to happen to this slow, backwater, ultr conservitive city. How about we trade away the "sticks in the mud" that have made Cincinnati the laughingstock sports town it is?

Marc, I totally agree about needing to take a WR.

Hopefully we get more than one Compensatory pick. That extra fourth rounder should be used on a Wideout.

Steve Johnson of Kentucky would be a great pick.

"Bengals need to rebuild." Implicit in this premise is that the Bengals were ever built. This roster perpetually carries the label "under construction." To the receivers. Getting Hue Jacksom back would do more to help this team than trading anyone. Chad and TJ complement each others talents. My question is who is the 3rd receiver? The logical choice is Chris Henry but he is inconsistent and unreliable. A healthy Chatman would help with competition. Maybe it's Glenn Holt. The problem with the receivers is their attitude not their talent. The real issue is that TJ and Chad are 30 years old and fans wonder if they will ever act their age.

What you need to do is get the running game going with a stable OL and Carson will have time to throw. Have a healthy Chris Perry and Henry the whole year and you can go to 5 wides and the Bengals offense will be hard to stop. 2007 was a miserable year because too many guys were hurt or unavailable to have any consistancy.

I know a good way to trade Chad Johnson without the receiving production dropping off.

We trade Chad Johnson, Rudi Johnson & our #9 pick and 1st round pick of 2009 to Miami for the #1 pick. We then select McFadden to fix our running game, let him and watson share the running game for the first season. Then use free agency and our 2nd and 3rd round picks on defense. Then maybe draft a receiver or tight end with the remainder of our picks.

By doing this it will give us a legit running game which will open up opportunities for our receivers.

TRADE AN A+ RECEIVER, A RUNNING BACK, AND 2 YEARS OF FIRST ROUND PICKS FOR A PICK THAT IS ONLY 8 AHEAD OF OURS. I HAVE HEARS SOME STUPID THINGS IN MY LIFE BUT THAT IS SHOCKING!!!!!!!!! let me get this straight.... McFadden is soooo good that he takes up all of the lost talent for possibly one of the best receivers in the league, a running back that possibly could still have some consistancy left in him, and two first round picks. (MIGHT I ADD... ONE OF THOSE PICKS IS ONLY 8 PICKS BEHIND.) NO NO NO THAT IS A FANTASTIC IDEA. FORGET ABOUT DEFENSIVE NEEDS AND OUR SECOND ROUND DRAFT PICK LAST YEAR.... WE NEED A FIRST ROUND RUNNING BACK... BECAUSE THAT MAKE UP FOR EVERYTHING.... where is Kijana Carter these days...????????????????????????

Keep in mind the Bengals draft the "best player available," so its quite possible they'll draft a WR in the second round after taking a running back in the first.

WHAT WOULD I DO WITH THE WR? NOTHING!!!!

We have the best corp in the league, even if I am wrong, we are arguably top 5. Why change that??

Obviously Chad is a little hurt, big deal, Chad I like you, but grow up and be a man and take your millions and play hard. Housh stays, why in the world would we trade him. We aren't running a minor league improvement club here (well, we shouldn't be). Keep Henry on a 24 hour monitor, when he even looks like he is going to go somewhere or hangout with hoods, 2 big linemen snatch him up in a van and work him over!!! Seriously, with those 3 and the other compitent fill ins, we are awesome. The entire offensive world would change if we had an upgrade at lineman. Add just 1 second more of protection to each play and we are 3 wins better and Palmer has about 10 less INT's. I appreciate most of the thoughts here, but there is no way I do anything to the WR, and wouldn't even think of drafting or signing one in the next 2-3 years.

To "Anonymous" who responded to my post. Sorry but Chad is not an A+ receiver nor is he one of the best in the league. He only does good against average or below average defenses. Chad needs to take his self-entertaining show out of town, if I want to watch someone promote his gold mowhawk and dance like a clown I'll go watch the circus. Any receiver will fill his spot because we have a very good accurate QB who can make any WR look good.

We only need a RB and a few defensive players which is why my plan would work. Rudi is done and has been for the past 2 years, once he got his big money contract he stopped trying.

Scott
Let me address some problems with your statement with some FACTS

"Chad is not an A+ receiver nor is he one of the best in the league"
Here are his NFL rankings in receiving yards since becoming a starter in 02
2002-15
2003-4
2004-6
2005-3
2006-1
2007-3
So you don't consider being in the top 5 in the league as one of the best?

and for
"Rudi is done and has been for the past 2 years, once he got his big money contract he stopped trying"

In 2006 he was 7th in the NFL in rushing. 1309 yds and 12TD's
Those are pretty good stats for someone who is "done" And how do you equal being injured to not "trying?" Do you know Rudi, how do you know he stopped trying?

The Bengals don't need to waste a first round pick on a RB? They have 5 to choose from, (including a 2nd rounder from last year) With a good offensive line you don't need a top 10 pick running back. Look at Denver over the years, Willie Parker was undrafted! Plus I agree with the anonymous post that why would you give up that much plus your first round in 2009 to gain 8 spots. Here I though Mike Brown was the worst GM possible. At least he didn't hire you. If the Bengals made that trade, it might beat out the N.O and Ricky Williams deal as the worst ever.

You know what. Chad and Tj should stay. if chris henry can get his act together he should stay to. the talent is there. This is the best Cincinnati team in years. get a tight end and a healthy rb and all the pieces to the puzzle are there. how dare anyone say trade chad. or tj. our offense compliments each other and getting rid of any of that is just stupid.

ocho cinco and ocho quatro all the way!!!!! to sb 43!!!!

The reason they should trade Housh (not Chad) is because he will never approach his 07 numbers again. This is a team that needs defensive players way more than Housh who can easily be replaced by Holt/Perry/Henry.

" Housh who can easily be replaced by Holt/Perry/Henry."

If you think either of those can "easily" replace Housh, you are sadly mistaken. Holt has only 17 catches his entire NLF career. Perry has not been healthy his entire career and now you want him to go over the middle and make the tough catches knowing he will be smacked. We all know that when Henry hear footsteps he drops the ball. Henry knows one route and that is "go deep" TJ is the ONLY reliable over the middle receiver we have on this team, and while his trade value may never be higher, he CAN NOT be "easily" replaced.

We've got an amazingly talented receiving corps. We have a game plan that doesn't really include throwing to the tight end ( a mistake in my opinion). We have a fairly strong roster of running backs. What's missing?
The offensive line to create holes and give the QB time and the receivers time to get down field.
The next thing missing is a strong defensive line.
Seems clear to me.

I'd cut bait with Tab Perry if the Bengals can draft Dorien Bryant (Purdue) in the 3rd or 4th round. He'd be a great kick returner (punts and KOs) and provide a 4th receiver option with speed to burn.

at 1/26/2008 12:37 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Could be wrong here and probably am but maybe it's not the receivers at all. I say this because with all his talent and gifts, Chris Henry rarely fully extends himself for the ball. How many times have we seen Henry watch a ball go by/past him and have his hands close to the body instead of FULLY FLIPPIN' EXTENDED in an EFFORT to bring the ball in? If he's uncoachable (and possibly is?) then get a third receiver who can and will play with heart. Or m aybe the coaching staff needs to light a fire under his posterior. Trade Chad or TJ, sure why not go back to the dark ages?

i say get rid of chris henery he has been a bust also keeny irons and rudi is all we need

at 1/30/2008 12:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is nothing wrong with the receiving core or any major need to change. Although Chad pouted too much and made crucial errors at times, he came within one overthrown Palmer pass to have lead the NFL in receiving yards for the 2nd year in a row and leading the AFC for the 5th year!! And Scott wants to trade him for peanuts?? Henry is also a great threat as seen by the difference in the passing game when he returned. What they need is a 4th receiver or better yet, a receiving tight end. Even more, they need a change in philosophy as they are the only team who refuses to run slants and other similar routes as other teams do.

If the bengals are having so many problems with chad johnson they should make a trade with the philadelphia eagles. They would gladly take him off your hands and in exchange the bengals would get a good draft pick for 2008. The eagles are in desperate need for a big time playmaker and i think a guy like chad johnson would get them back to the promise land.
