Roster analysis: Quarterbacks

Beginning today, for the next nine days, I will take a quick look at the Bengals roster by position group and seek reader response to a related question.

Today: Quarterbacks

Starter: Carson Palmer

Backups: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeff Rowe

Palmer, in his fourth year as starter, set a single-season franchise record with 4,131 yards, but his touchdowns were down and interceptions up in 2007. His 20 interceptions tied for most in the NFL. Palmer took every snap, fortunately, for the Bengals. They let backup Doug Johnson go after the last preseason game and traded for Fitzpatrick. As long as Palmer is healthy, the Bengals are strong at quarterback and a competitive team.

It's estimated that 80 percent of the Palmer throws in 2007 that looked errant were indeed the responsibility of receivers running the incorrect route, even by a yard or two. The line protected the quick-thinking Palmer, who rarely holds onto the football too long, with a frachise single-season low 17 sacks. The team's receivers need to regain the route-running discipline that abandoned them too frequently this past season. A consistent run offense also would help.

Question: Do the Bengals need to shop in the offseason for a more qualified backup than Fitzpatrick?

No, save the money for other positions. If Palmer goes down, so does the season.

The backup QB situation on this team is a joke. Neither Fitzpatrick nor Rowe are even qualified to be in this league. The drafting of Rowe was a complete debacle. This team desperately needs an adequate backup. We can't expect Palmer to be like Favre....he WILL get hurt and miss games. It's inevitable. A couple guys I'd like to see us take a look at are Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown, and Jamie Martin.

If they do, I doubt it would be until the pre-season. I'd like to see what Rowe can do after a year in the system. After all, that is why they drafted him in the 5th round... to back up Palmer much like Jim Sorgi in Indianapolis. Fitzpatrick could stay, but I beleive the draft pick the Bengals traded to acquire him was conditional based on playing time. Is this true? and if so, could the bengals recoup their pick?

By whom was it estimated that 80% of the interceptions were due to incomplete routes?

Let Cleveland have the high priced QB's and the Ravens the retreads ... we are fine. I would like to see what Fitzpatrick can do in the offense come preseason ... but I do not want to see what he can do in the reg season for obvious reasons ...

kramer, are you banned from the ESPN boards? I think social has a way to get back on even if they banned your IP address

No, save the money. We have other issues far more pressing. We need to fix the D, draft a center... Those 2 back ups are good enough and he goes down, with our brutal schedule, we will be dead anyway..

I can ;t disagree more.. 80%..Honestly there were plenty of times ..and i mean dozens of times this season that Carson Plamer overthrew receivers with no pass rush around him..Why is there this need to try to make it seem Carson Plamer is immune from fault..Ben Rothlesberger had injuries on his offensive line and he fnds ways to move out of the pocket instead of standing there like a statue like Carson does and Ben still makes plays..The way I see it .. the
Bengals were 7-9 largely due to sub par quarterback play..

at 1/21/2008 11:44 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think they should be shopping for an offensive coordinator not another QB unless someone can tell me that the poor play calling was the result of Carson audibling at the line the wrong adjustments. Sometimes I really wonder about that. Mark what is your view? how much impact could his line of scrimmage judgement audibling have on the offensive results?

at 1/22/2008 1:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

That depends on how good Fitzpatrick is! Doesn't it?

I mean, hasn't this team tested the three backups? I suspect that the money should be spent on a new stud center!

at 1/22/2008 1:34 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look, if Palmer goes down they ain't winning anyway. Fitzpatrick is bright and Rowe looked good in the preseason.

Who is the source that claims 80% of the errrant throws were bad routes? I'm sure it was a big problem but Carson missed some throws as well and you can't just lay all the sins of the offense at the feet or your loquacious receivers.

at 1/22/2008 4:38 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Do any of you understand Football if a WR runs the wrong route then the ball would seem to be over thrown. sure some of the blame goes to Carson but 8 out of 10 the reciver read the defence wrong and cut his route short or over ran it. As far as Fitzpatric he did a fine job as Back-up with the Rams.

Once we get to the point where we are actually a playoff contender, then it will be necessary to have a backup that could possibly carry a team. It is a waste to have a replacement player search, while we still need adequate starters, especially on defense. We had Palmer completely healthy this year, and look where it got us. our 07 record sure can't be blamed on Fitzpatrick or Rowe.

I think that 80% is rediculous, Carson had a bad year he is still the QB in town but he was definitely the main culprit for the passing woes this season, be a man and step up like Favre did when he set the interception record, blaming recievers isn't the right way to go.

at 1/22/2008 7:21 AM Blogger Al in Ohio said...

I have to say that the 80% estimation seems to be outrageously generous to Palmer. I suspect it's based on the belief that he is so good that the mistakes can't POSSIBLY be his fault.

Anyway, I also think the Bengals need to focus on their defense first and foremost this off-season. Upgrading the backup QB is important, sure, but right now they could have a hybrid of Favre/Marino/Unitas/Brady and it wouldn't matter, if the defense can't stop anyone.

at 1/22/2008 8:03 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is no way that 80% were due to the wrong routes. If this is a figure from a coach, please provide your reference. Carson was bad this year...not Klingler bad obviously, but a LOT worse than what Bengal fans expect from him. I think the media needs to put to rest the "one of the best 5 QBs in the league" garbage until he steps up as a leader and takes this team somewhere.

Hey 10:27 I'm not on the staff or in the huddle are you? You say dozens of times you saw Carson over throw receivers, I guess you know what play was called to be able to make that assumption since you must know what the route was. Oh you aren't on the staff or in the huddle or have locker room access? Wow and you still know what the correct route was? I did not realize Kreskin was a Bengals fan.

Who cares about the backup QB situation? Carson is the franchise, and everybody knows that (God fobid) if he gets injured, the season is already over anyway. Might as well look for some quality backup linemen to protect Palmer than waste money on someone who, if they played, would be THE WORST thing that could happen to the team.

"Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeff Rowe".

Who?

Better upgrade the O-Line first or all 3 of these guys could end up as toast. All football games are won or lost with the O-line.

at 1/22/2008 9:51 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Getting a consistent running game going will help much more than chasing after a journeyman quarterback who may or may not be better than the ones the Bengals have. And yes, if Carson goes down, the season may also. The same is true in Indy and New England. Bottom line is, though, invest time and effort in a solid running game and everything will work itself out (offensively, that is).

at 1/22/2008 10:09 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who in the world came up with the 80 percent statistic? How in the world did they come up with it? (where they in the huddle with a clear understanding of the playbook?). Honestly, this is not Miami, Oakland, or Buffalo. If Carson goes down so does that game and possibly that season depending on the severity of the injury. Last i checked we didnt quite have a top 5,10, or even 20 defense. HELLO?!?!?!No no no, we really need to be worrying about our 2nd string quarterback. We have the worst recieving trio in the game. I doubt they could catch anything that hasnt been thrown by a possible future hall of famer. I am a fan mark. But this artical is a joke.

It is all about the wide recievers coach....new coach this past season and all goes to hell...

Congrats mark, you have officially become the BIGGEST JOKE IN THE MEDIA. to say 80% of palmer's "errant paases" were the result of 'recievers running the wrong route" is an ABSOLUTE JOKE"!!!!! It's no wonder Marvin Lewis and many of the Bengals fans view the media as a bunch of jelous, unathletic geeks with theie pants around their ankles. So let me get this straight, the two ALL PRO RECIEVERS all of the sudden FORGOT TO RUN THE RIGHT DAMN ROUTES? Tell that garbage to Antrelle Role who intercepted carson Palmer 3TIMES and returned TWO INTERCEPTIONS FOR TOUCH DOWNS. Did Chad or T.J. "run the wrong route" when Carson Palmer underthrows a "frickin fly pattern"? I realize carson plamer has taken obver the mantle as "THE GREAT WHITE HOPE" for Cincinnati sports with the departure of sean casey and josh hamilton but this takes the case. Next you will wite how carson plamer needs to become mentally stronger to deal with the "inner-city" attitudes of Chad and T.J. ............80% of carson palmer's passes were the result of recivers running the wrong route my A#$. mark you are a joke!!!! What's next, a job on 1530 homer?

I'd keep it as is until camp. If Fitzpatrick doesn't inspire much confidence at that point, then look at the waiver wire for a veteran. It's too early to tell on Rowe.

at 1/22/2008 11:45 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

"So let me get this straight, the two ALL PRO RECIEVERS all of the sudden FORGOT TO RUN THE RIGHT DAMN ROUTES?"

By that same argument, a two time ALL PRO QB all of the sudden FORGOT HOW TO THROW THE BALL?

at 1/22/2008 11:56 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

There are much bigger needs on this team then acquiring a veteran backup QB. Pick one of the two current backup and let the other go.

Then I'd like to have find a slash type QB/WR on the cheap/in the late rounds or as a free agent, just to put him in every now and again to run options, rollouts, etc. or other things to change up a bit. No sense having two traditional QA backups sit there and chart plays.

IMO, one negative thing about our offense is we are so predictable in our drop back and pass in the pocket approach, and that gives defenses an advantage.

There is no need to tie up a LB as a spy because they no Carson is not going to scramble. This makes it harder for the receivers to find opening in zone coverage.

tired of media free passes for Carson Palmer............... You have the Football IQ of a Peanut
Sure Carson is to blame too(20%) but look at the whole picture WR's are running bad routs(80%), I bet you think it's always th CB fault when he get's beat deep on a cover 2 But it in fact may be the safety's fault for not getting over fast enough. Open your eyes! YOU might be the Biggest Joke?

at 1/22/2008 12:28 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

To qoute johnny mack 'you can not be serious"? Who thought of the 80% wrong route crap? this seems like a stat a geek like Lance mccalister would think up. there is NO WAY IN HELL 80% of the routes run were 'wrong routes". is the media scared of caeson palmer? Why is it o.k. to blame the recievers but not o.k. to blame carson plamer? When did carson palmer's 'stuff stop stinking"? Let carson palmer stand on his own two feet. Stop making excuses for palmer. the guys in the locker room will start to turn against palmer if they feel he is getting a "free white boy pass".

at 1/22/2008 12:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

For anyone to believe the reason for carson palmer having a less than "carson palmer type year" because the "recievers ran the wrong route 80%of the time" is just FLAT OUT STUPID and the media in this town depends on your STUPIDTY. it's nowonder cincinnati has the "rep" for running star athletes out of town. Is there anyone out there who actually believes this garbage other than weak a$$ lance mcallister?

at 1/22/2008 1:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

No reason to shop for a backup. They've already wasted a 5th round pick on Rowe & a 7th round pick (conditional) on Fitzpatrick, who are both under contract. Let's face it, if Carson goes down, the Bengals are done anyway.

at 1/22/2008 1:13 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

They Both are to blame. I'm sure Carson missed his receivers at times, and I'm sure receivers ran the wrong routes at times. If either one of them is slightly off, the passing game goes south fast. You can't deny that Carson and Chad both had bad years. Too many overthrows and too many dropped passes. You also can't deny that both of them are still considered among the top at their position in the league.

Bringing in the race card only weakens your argument.

Bringing in the race card only weakens your argument.

no....bringing in "80% of carson palmer's bad throws were due to recievers running bad routes" weakens your arguement. You people would have to be out of your damn mind to believe 80% of carson's passes were due to "bad routes". What, does mark think we are all stupid? I guess he believes some of you are. from this point forward mark canutte has lost all creditbility. he may as well become a sports talk host, becuase they dont have any "cred" either. It's not as if marvin lewis gave mark those stats,

at 1/22/2008 2:30 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

To all those who seem to lack simple reading comprehension skills:

Mark never said the WRs ran the wrong route 80% of the time nor did he say that 80% of all incompletions were the WRs fault.

He was clearly writing only about the passes where it appeared that the QB and WR were not on the same page regarding the route (i.e. when the WR turned one way but the pass was thrown the other way or when the WR cut too soon).

He is saying, in only those select cases, 80% of the time the QB had it right and the WR ran the wrong route.

He was not including the normal incompletions where the players were all on the same page but the ball was just off target.

Point one
"becuase they dont have any "cred" either"

Could you please define this "cred" Do you have this so called "cred"?

Point two
"It's not as if marvin lewis gave mark those stats"

Those Stats came from the Bengals. Marvin Lewis is the voice of this franchise, so yes he did.

at 1/22/2008 3:17 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

ANON 2:16

How do you know that when Carson misses a WR that the receiver is not in the wrong place. Where is your proof. Mark is just reporting on what the Bengals released to him. Come on, show some of that "cred"

at 1/22/2008 4:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dont believe the hype people, this is just another way for the Cincinnati media to cover the ass of the "golden boy' and his weak mind. next mark will write about how scarred Carson is of Chad and T.J......damn inner city recievers always trying to intimidate little old carson.....boo frickn hooo....throw the damn ball carson or get your punk butt off the feild.i hate soft california types....grow a pair golden boy....the blonde bombshell act has already been taken by overrated boomer easiaon.

at 1/22/2008 5:50 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

"i hate soft california types"

Let’s see
Dhani Jones
Leon Hall
Andrew Whitworth
T.J. Houshmandzadeh

They all must be soft, because they were all born in Southern California.

As for you being sick of "Blond bombshell" Since Boomer we have had one Blond QB, Carson. We did however have several non Blond QB such as
Dave Klinger
Neil O'Donnell
Jeff Blake
Scott Mitchell
Gus Frerotte
Your right, they were ALL better than Carson.

Your points are ridiculously stupid.

IMHO, 8:49 said all that needs to be said here:
"All football games are won or lost with the O-line."

Repeat after me, slowly.

at 1/24/2008 5:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Much has been made out of the receivers running wrong routes..and as normal, Chad gets the blame...But is this to say that Carson didn't throw the ball to the right spot 20% of the time? or that if routes were run properly, that all balls would have been caught? and not intercepted? Once again, let's get back to the real problems of the Bengals. Too much focus on Chad and not enough on Defense...Running game...Tight End needs etc etc..

at 2/15/2008 6:49 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't hold your breath that Ryan Fitzpatrick will be around when training camp rolls around. Another team (Dolphins, Falcons, etc.) are going to give him a shot at QB because he's a gamer. Those of us who've seen him play know he's gonna start in this league within the next 2 years.
