On Zimmer, and who would you keep?

Question: Which of the Bengals defensive free agents do you re-sign if you're making the decisions? Or not? Why?

Defensive line: End Justin Smith, end-tackle Bryan Robinson.

Linebacker: Landon Johnson, Dhani Jones, Lemar Marshall, Caleb Miller.

Secondary: Madieu Williams.

Mike Zimmer, introduced Wednesday as Bengals defensive coordinator, certainly has an impressive resume with seven years experience as Cowboys coordinator, followed by one year trying to hold together the defense as the Atlanta Falcons fell apart.

Chuck Bresnahan, Zimmer's predecessor, did, too.

The most impressive element in Zimmer's background might be his ability to work for Bill Parcells and to have been re-hired off the previous Cowboys staff by Parcells.

Zimmer looks like the right fit at the right time for the Bengals.

So did Bresnahan.

Head coach Marvin Lewis talked about the need for he and his coordinator to be aligned philosophically. He and Zimmer talked about Zimmer's visit to Baltimore when Lewis was Ravens coordinator and Zimmer had just completed his first season as Cowboys coordinator.

But was Zimmer the first choice? Was it Rex Ryan, the former Ravens coordinator now a finalist for the Atlanta Falcons head-coaching job?

Moot point now.

Zimmer said all the right things Wednesday. How much control will he have, though, or is he essentially a puppet for Lewis' role as de facto coordinator?

Lewis talked about how Zimmer agreed to fit into what the Bengals were already doing defensively.

I asked Lewis about Bresnahan's comment in an Enquirer interview, about how Bresnahan lamented the unfinished business of fixing the defense and convincing management to spend a more equitable amount of salary cap money on the defense, compared to the offense.

"Chuck worked his tail off for us," Lewis said. "We'll let it go at that."

Zimmer's success as coordinator might depend on how much latitude Lewis gives him and if the organization, indeed, will spend more defensively. Will Zimmer be able to maintain the fire that apparently burns inside as a coach? Or he will become defeated in Cincinnati?

The secondary appears to be in good shape, thanks to some smart drafting. Proven depth is needed, though, especially if the team terminates the contracts of cornerback Deltha O'Neal and safety Dexter Jackson. Re-signing safety Madieu Williams would be smart because he also can play cornerback.

Linebacker is an interesting position because of the injured players who will return, namely Ahmad Brooks and Eric Henderson. Will the team re-sign any of the following combination of free agent linebackers: Landon Johnson, Dhani Jones, Lemar Marshall? I would sweeten the deal to keep Johnson. He is something few defensive players have been for the Bengals -- reliable and consistently productive, though not flashy. Johnson can play any of the three linebacker positions well.

Most of the heavy lifting from a personnel perspective needs to be done on the defensive line. Veteran Bryan Robinson, for one, is gone. Offensive lineman Adam Kieft was moved into Robinson's long-time locker cubicle at Paul Brown Stadium. Will the Bengals spend anything in free agency? Lewis said again Wednesday that free agency doesn't fix NFL teams.

Justin Smith was the team's franchise player, as designated in free agency, which cost the Bengals $8.64 million for one season. He had two sacks.

I am sick of Chuck's departing remarks about the Bengals spending more money on offense. All of the top dollar offensive players on the bengals were drafted just as the defensive players were. The only difference was that the offensive players were developed into star players and were rewarded with big contracts. Chuck didn't develop a single player into a defensive player worth a ham sandwich let alone a big contract.
Chuck's remarks just validate his firing and poor coaching.

Justin Smith - Let him go. Move Geathers to RDE and have Rucker and Fanene take over at LDE. Then bring in a free agent DE to back up Geathers and also draft a DE to develop.

Bryan Robinson - Let him go. Replace him with either a free agent DT like Corey Williams or draft a DT.

Landon Johnson - Bring him back. Hes one of the few linebackers that the Bengals can count on.

Dhani Jones - Bring him back. He helped improve special teams right away and then helped fill a hole on defense. Hes a veteran player that set a good example on the field for the younger players.

Lemar Marshall - undecided. If hes healthy I would bring him back, but his injured has me worried.

Caleb Miller - Let him go. Hes undersized and can't stay healthy. He can be replaced in either free agency or the draft.

Madieu Williams - Bring him back. He like the rest of the secondary will play better once the defensive front 7 improves. Right now the guys in the secondary have to run around forever because the front 7 can't get any pressure on the QB.

I agree slightly with the anon poster! Yes you are right, Chuck is just making excuses for his lack of knowledge and skill as a D-C. However, I must say from an organizational stand point, it is a little easier to draft offensive productivity than defensive, as a rule that is. The problem I have with Cincy, we reach for players on the defensive side of the draft, and never look to adjust with FA. Case in point this year, we are in need of defensive help. We need to draft 3 or 4 guys that can be productive at DT, DE, and S. But we all know that draftees should not be counted on to come in the first year and start or contribute alot (exception to some guys), therefore we also need to go out and sign some top tier FA. If we do not get either Haynesworth or Allen in the middle and a competitive pass rusher, the draft won't matter and the defense will again be ranked in the lower 3rd. Its all about utilizing all resources and not count on one area. MB spoke about the % of our draft picks who play immediately and play alot as compared to other teams and our scouting department, HUH! That was a very ignorant statement (not calling him ignorant, but the statement), that is not something to be proud of. Draft picks play for one of three reasons, 1) They are freakish in the fact they are mature and ready to contribute at a high level (20%). 2) Injuries to other players open the door for them to play (30%). 3) The organization is so cheap and uncommited that they are willing to play draft picks instead of recruiting and paying high end FA (50%). We know what area we fall into and that is why draft picks play. I am going to give ZIM a chance and hope he is given some input into players and change things. If not, he will be better than Chuck, but not much.

Bring Landon Back! In a 3-4 he's a perfect weakside OLB. It was a very dumb move, if it's true they offered Landon & Dhani the same contract and just shows how dumb this organization really is.

Bring Dhani back also.

Williams needs to come back (if he doesn't demand a large contract) just so he and Ndukwe can start at safety, then in the nickel, bring in Marvin White to SS and let Williams be the 3rd corner in the Nickel package.

As for Smith -- gone, Robinson -- gone, Miller -- gone. Marshall -- not a necessity like Johnson, Williams, & Jones, but wouldn't mind seeing him back. Draft/and pick up FA line help.

*On another note, as for WR, this is the deepest draft class of WR's I've seen in years, with both seniors and the underclassman that are coming out.

Bring back Landon Johnson??? Are you kidding me??? The guy plays wayyy too soft, and is Injury prone, you know why he led the team in tackles?? check the stats, teams ran his way 80% of the time, cas he couldnt tackle till they got 6 yrds a carry, now think,if you knew you was gonna get 6 yrds a carry on Johnsons side, wouldnt you run his side every !@#$ time?? This Front 7 is horrible, other than Peko,I wouldnt bring anyone back, till you get some talent(even average would work, geez)this defense will never improve, period. Did you hear Zims comments when he come in,bend dont break with what you got,wth is Lewis telling these def cordinators to brain wash them into thinking that,I useta have big praise for Marvin, but the guy has a ego problem with def cordinators,he dont mind bringing them in,as long as they always know his defensive guru ego wont be matched, that means the def cordinator cant do HIS OWN thing, thats the problem, ever wonder why we have went thru 3 def cordinators in Marvins 5yrs here with only one winning season to show for it,scroll up,he wont let them do there job!

Problem with our WR's are they never had no competition via draft or FA,I believe you bring in some new faces that they wont have time to run there mouth cas they may be getting there butts handed to them fighting competition wideouts, dont you think they be more worried about someone makin them look bad in camp, then they would shootin there mouth off,I do believe that shuts them up.

Folks: We must all realize that players and D-CO won't matter if M.L. is the H.C.!Please check the record...and former D-CO Leslie F.!!We do have poor talent on defense and worse yet most of them are very stupid! However, the biggest problem is our complete lack of disipline! This is on M.L. & we'll get worse if he stays!!!!

D-End Justin Smith: Bye-bye. They never should have kept him last year. They should have spent that money to keep Eric Steinbach, and sign another good free agent.

D-end-tackle Bryan Robinson: He's probably affordable and provides depth.

Linebackers Landon Johnson, Dhani Jones, Lemar Marshall, Caleb Miller: They probably can't afford Johnson. Everybody else should return. Miller is good when he can stay on the field. Dhani Jones was a great pickup.

Safety Madieu Williams: I like Williams. If they can sign him for a reasonable price, they should keep him, but the two rookies kinda make Williams expendable to some degree. I would try to sign Williams as the nickle and cut Deltha O'Neal.

Until Marvin Lewis is gone, it wont matter who is the DC or who we decide to keep. Hes not a good coach, The whole staff needs to go bye bye. Marvin had all these good D's how come we are horrible every year? Move him to DC and bring in Marty or Cower! 1 winning season in 17 years.... Thats all u need to say about that.
