Chad: 'If I am a cancer, we need to get chemo'

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

The Chad Johnson trade-me-if-I'm-the-problem tour of sports radio hit the ground running this morning with his appearance on ESPN's Mike & Mike in the Morning.

Asked what’s going to happen in the future with the Bengals, the wide receiver said, “I’m not sure what’s going to happen. … I’ve been labeled as selfish, as the reason we’re losing. I’ve been told I’ve been a cancer to my team."

Johnson's offseason campaign is believed to be orchestrated by agent Drew Rosenhaus in an effort to get a new contract for Johnson with another team.

Johnson did not return a message left today on his cell phone.

The Bengals finished 7-9. At midseason, when the team slumped to a 2-6 start, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the Bengals had discussed the possibility of trading Johnson. Johnson would not speak to the Cincinnati-based media for the remainder of the season.

Head coach Marvin Lewis and team president Mike Brown, in an early November interview requested by The Enquirer, both said the team would not trade Johnson and that his contributions were valued.

"Chad Johnson is a tremendous football player," Brown said in November. "We’re glad he’s here. He is an integral part of what we do. And he isn’t going anywhere."

Johnson is under contract through 2011 with the Bengals. He signed a $35.5 million extension in April 2006.

Johnson, today morning on ESPN radio, went on to say that if he is indeed a cancer, "then the team would need to get chemo. If I am a problem, the problem needs to be dealt with."

Johnson was hurt because no one within the organization came to his defense.

"To do me the way I was done, not too many people really having my back within," he said.

Johnson finished with a single-season franchise record 1,440 receiving yards. He has six consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards.

"Now the season is over," Johnson said on ESPN radio. "I was the problem, I have been a distraction. Chad Johnson, the fingers were pointed at me. My celebrations, all this stuff was the reason we were losing.

"The only thing for me to do or say now is, if you guys, as a team and organization, want to further yourself in the playoffs, I think you need to get rid of what the problem was during the season."

The Bengals late today declined to comment on Johnson’s radio interview, spokesman Jack Brennan said.

Sadly, maybe the best thing for a football fan and Chad is that he does leave. The Bengals ownership doesn't seem to be committed to a winning program. It's no fun for fans and it's gotta be worse for a player.

How about this Chad: Grow up, act like a man and not some little girl orchestrating a game of patty-cake; buckle your white, team-issued chinstrap (not the orange one you've been fined for), run your routes precisely, catch the ball in crunch time, and quit gesturing like a convulsive idiot if the ball isn't delivered directly into your chest. Oh, and maybe block somebody. Good riddance, I hope you end up in Oakland.

This all started after the Pats game with Marvin talking post-game about 'selfish' players and then the media ran away with it and assumed he was talking about Chad. Albeit he didn't have a great year by his standards (he and Carson weren't always on the same page), he still opens up the field for TJ and the rest of the offense.

Major mistake to trade him. Who is going to replace his productivity, Chris Henry? yeah right, you can't count on Henry for anything. The logic of some Bengals fans on here disgusts me. Keep drinking the Kool-aid and keep waiting for next year, which never arrives.

Unfortunately I think Mark is right about Rosenhaus. Hopefully Chad wises up and drops that pathetic megalomaniac. What a weasel.

Send him to Baltimore. That'll teach him. Every WR's that's ever played there struggles just to be ordinary. Most suffer short, painful and uneventful careers while playing there.

Chad spends too much time talking. Pack your bags man and gooooooooooooo!

Chad, young man, shut up-GROW UP-suck it up-play some hard nose football-and learn to downfield block like nobody else, and take it up a few notches!!!! And you don't deserve any more money until you do perform much better.....If you insist on being the center of attention and it's me-me-me-me all the time and not the team, then git out......we do love ya here, but shut up and just play football!

Hm, let's see.. Drew Rosenhaus, nobody has my back, everyone is talking about me, if I'm a cancer trade me..I guess next are sit-ups in front of PBS...sounds like we want more money!!!! sounds like someone named TO...be careful Chad you may be the next "next question".....

Westministerian
Sure every player in Baltimore struggles just to be "normal" but they've had five winning seasons since 2000. We've had one. Oh, and the Ravens also won the Superbowl in that period.
Perhaps when you said they struggle to be normal, you meant 8-8 or worse is normal.

Chad should see if he can compete on American Idol. That is the only thing that will make him happy.

at 1/11/2008 8:17 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The word Westministerian used is 'ordinary', which is not synonimous nor necessarily tantamount with 'normal' in the context that it was used. I think the point may have been missed.

Keep Chad. Get rid of Marvin - he's the problem. Lack of discipline is the fault of the coach.

Concidering that Chad probably reads this because he is a drama queen. That man needs to grow up and quit being a sissy all his life. If he wants to go let him go and be a baby somewhere else. He may free TJ to make plays but when was the last time he made a catch that mattered. Half of Carson's interceptions were his fault because he was afraid to go accross the middle and then he fakes a injury and goes off on a stretcher because he's embarressed after dropping yet another ball. It is pathetic that we have to talk about this.

Has Jerry Rice or Marvin Harrison ever acted this childish?? How many Patriots or Colts WR do you see spouting like this?? CJ85 says he wants to be one of the 'greatest'...sorry CJ, you're not even in the same league as Jerry or Marvin... you see, they PLAY THEIR BEST IN THE BIG BALLGAMES. Anybody can have a good day against the Dolphins. Do this team a huge favor Mike and Marvin...trade CJ to some sucker team NOW!!!

Can someone here answer a question for me? I'm serious. Who called Chad a cancer? I don't remember anyone from the media and certainly no one from the Bengals - players, coaches, anyone - saying anything negative about him. Marvin mentioned the selfishness, but I don't know that he meant Chad.

Is Chad just making all this stuff up for more money? Does he read the negative stuff in blogs or hear people who call into radio talk shows and then expect the Bengals to publicly dispute those people on his behalf?

I don't get it. Must be more to the story. Either that or Chad has gone over the edge.

To whomever was saying ordinary and normal weren't the same in this context,

Okay, I agree. "Normal" in a league where nearly half the league makes it into the playoffs is making it to the playoffs.
"Ordinary", on the other hand, is a team that win some, lose some but never reach an extreme like winning the division, the league, or Super Bowl in seventeen years.
Enjoy ordinary.
As a dad with a sports fan in the house, I don't have that luxury. My kid's only seen one winning season.
Chad plays at the top of the league and expects the team to be there too.

Marvin, Carson, and TJ, when asked about the stories about Chad being selfish, have all had Chad's back. I just don't understand what his gripe is.

I think it's more about playing for a team who has only had one winning season since he's been here.

Chad better be careful what he wishes for, not every team in the NFL has a QB that can get him the ball like Carson.

actually many fans and certain talk show hosts did imply Chad was a "cancer"..

so what? ..when you are a sports star making millions of dollars a year ..you are going to hear both good and bad

Conversely..both Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis..as late as this past November had nothing but good things to say about Chad. I have never heard of another team mate diminishing him

there is no denying that Chad is a very good ballplayer. yet his downfield blocking, route running and making catches when needed in big games leave something to be desired.

For whatever reason Chad has this need to be the center of attention and these current comments by him clearly suggest this

What he is doing is now doing is absolutely no different from what those "bad apples" on other teams have done in the past and it might be best if he was traded

You have too many players on this Bengals team worried about their own stats ,performance and contracts. Sadly Chad Johnson is one of these players

Chad forgets that this is a TEAM game, he said that the TEAM did not have his back. Marvin and Mike comments were correct, Chad is a value to this TEAM. What more did he want them to say without making the other 44 players on the TEAM feel like second class citizens. However, Chad forgets that he is not the TEAM.
Chad needs to do a reality check if he was in NY the media and the public would be not tolerate it and the coaches would call him out by name, this behavior and that 1440 yards would turn into 800 yards and his agent would disappear looking for the next career he can ruin to line his pockets.
So be careful what you wish for Chad, the next TEAM may not have a TJ on the TEAM that demands double coverage.

For anyone to say we should get rid of Chad proves they don't understand the game. Chad is the reason TJ caught so many balls, just as Moss is the reason Wes Welker caught so many. Chad is one of the 5 best recievers in the league and runs the best routes of anyone in the league. We are an embarrasing group of fans sometimes. No wonder we suck. Chad brought fun a media attention to a bad football team. God luck finding a better player or interesting character around here again. IDIOTS!

Now is the perfect time for Marvin to retake control of this team. Send a message, no one is bigger then the team. Trade Chad and get some draft picks. Also, dump some players that have over stayed their time. I love you Big Willie but you gotta go. Domato your hair flys in the wind but you don't get it done. See ya!

When does Chad's contract end? 2010? If I'm Mike Brown I do nothing, let Chad keep inserting his foot in his mouth and become the heel of the team. If Chad sits out then so be it, contracts should matter.

Will someone give me a break. When will I be able to turn on a radio sports talk show and not have to listen to hours of complaints about Chad? OK we all agree that he is immature..And with that said, getting rid of him will NOT solve the Bengals problems on defense...running game...poor play calling...depth of talent etc etc SO what's the point. Do we now feel better somehow after going on and on and on about Chad's poor attitude? This has to be the most over rated and over bloated subject in Cincinnati Sports History. BUth then again, spring is just ahead and the media can start on Adam Dunn. When will this ever end. with so many great Cincinnati sports stories happening right now, why do we have to listned to this worn out subject.

ain't it funny how a person like Chad Johnson won't speak to the local media but notes every word said about him. A few people, out of thousands, call him a cancer and he's ready to quit? It says a lot about you Chad, it says an awful lot.

CHAD: I think you are a great player, and arguably top 5 in the NFL, but you are not perfect. You are also not a cancer, and tend to bring enjoyment to the fans, players, coaches, and analyst throughout the league. YOU DO DROP PASSES, a lot like T.O this year, you made big plays and put up good numbers, but you dropped some big passes. Does that make you a bad player NO, but whinning does not help your status. Here is how most fans feel, you make millions of dollars a year, more than we will see in our life time, YOU signed your contract at your discretion, go out and play. We are tired of players (no matter how good they are) who sign contracts or extensions, then have a great year or two and immediately feel they need a new contract to keep up with the Jones's. Would you or any other NFL player be willing to take a pay cut in the 2nd year of a 5yr deal if you had a season in which you were rated 14 or 15th in the league? The answer is NO! I do not defend Mike Brown because he is cheap, and irrational on most NFL decisions, but in this case you are wrong. Quit making threats, quit making ultimatums, quit talking period and just play. FA comes and you want to leave, then leave, but right now you are a Bengal, and just like us true fans, suffer through it and go on.

The NFL is ENTERTAINMENT based around the game of football. Chad is a master of his craft and I applaud him. Who would be happy as a Cincinnati Bengal? LOL - PLEASE! This organizayion is a joke from top to bottom. Do you folks realize that Chad set a new career high in receiving yards this season?...All while having NO running game and a terrible year from his QB. Chad is an easy target. The "old guard" are the only ones who are griping. To me, you old guys aren't true fans. You're the ones that keep going to PBS. You're the ones who year in and year out adopt the Mike Brown mantra that "we're only 1 or 2 players away." NEWSFLASH: This team is a good 6-7 defensive starters, a running back, and an entire coaching staff away from competing. That's a FACT. Chad isn't a problem at all. How can anyone blame him for wanting out, though?

Pleazzzzzzzzze open the door for Chad and let him out!

Chad keep the faith, it won't get better here without a GM, but FA keeps getting closer!

at 1/14/2008 9:01 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chad's upset that no one inside the team 'had his back.' Well maybe, Chad, that's because they all thought you were wrong? Maybe everyone knows that you are sensitive, and they didn't want to hurt your feelings by telling you directly, but they agree that didn't perform to your ability, you didn't put out the effort in some plays and in some games, and that Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties after touchdowns when the game is not yet won hurt the team. So, they didn't defend those actions; they didn't have your back. Ever thought about it that way?

If Chad's going to play hard and with joy and play as a teammate, EVERYONE wants him to stay here.

its whining and complaining like this that makes him a cancer.

Is it possible that Chady is too stupid to understand any of this?

I'm starting to believe.

Now i know why sports talk radio works well in this town. You people need help! The media convinces the idiots of the worls that Chad is the problem and you geeks fall for it. The media says Marvin lewis has "lost the team" and you fools fall for it. It's no wonder the Bush Adm. was able to convince the stupid that Saddam huiesan had something to do with 911. if you idiots believe everything guys like Lance mccallisters says then you deserve the type of team you will get. They know you are stupid and you guys do a great job convincing those who ACTUALLY PLAYED SPORTS that the dumb, unathletic and geeky are the majority of those in the sports media. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES........THINK ABOUT IT GEEKS
