Rolling through the wires

UPDATED: 9:22 a.m. -- The Enquirer reported Monday on its Web site and again Tuesday morning in the print edition that the Panthers denied the Bengals permission to interview secondary coach Tim Lewis, who remains under contract with Carolina.

A quick look at the NFL news this morning that affects the Bengals:

-- From the Associated Press in Buffalo, N.Y., comes word that former Bengals offensive line coach Jim McNally of the Bills has retired.

(January 9, 2008) — BUFFALO — Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Jim McNally retired Tuesday, ending a 28-year NFL career that included tutoring Hall of Fame tackle Anthony Munoz.

"I have truly enjoyed my coaching career in the NFL, and I just feel that the time is right for me to retire," McNally said in a statement issued by the team. "I want to offer a big thank you to all the players I've coached. ... I can only hope that I've been as instrumental in their lives as they have been in mine."

McNally, who turned 64 last month, spent the past four years with the Bills, ending his career in his hometown and where he broke in as a coach with the University at Buffalo in 1965. He's best known for the 15 seasons — from 1980-94 — he spent with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he coached both Munoz and Pro Bowler Max Montoya, and made two Super Bowl appearances.

-- From Baltimore, Sun NFL columnist Mike Preston has launched this trial balloon, speculating that the Ravens might trade draft picks to the Bengals to release Marvin Lewis from the final three seasons of his contract in order to hire Lewis to replace the fired Brian Billick as head coach:

-- And, out of Miami, former Bengals defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, now with the Vikings, as well as former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan have interviewed for the Dolphins head-coaching position. Ryan, of course, is now believed to be the top pick of Lewis to replace Chuck Bresnahan as Bengals defensive coordinator.

Yesterday, WKRC news kept repeating that the Bengals had received permission to talk to Tim Lewis. I don't see that in your recap. Were they in error?

WOW this speaks volumns of what others think of Marvin and our team of misfits here in Cincy. A must read of the 77 posts on this site from Baltimore.

Trade Marvin for Baltimore's 1st or 2nd round pick, grab Shottenheimer or Cower (long-shot) to bring accountability and discipline to the organization, then hit the ground running in 2008. This could be Shottenheimer's opportunity to have more power than he had in San Diego

How about MB sells the team to someone who knows football and wants to win. Until then we will continue to lose and suffer with the loser organization.

What good are draft picks to the Bengals?

Why would they trade him within the division (to the former Browns)?

Well, maybe the Bengals would do it for a pile of cash, but not for picks. :)

I'd be willing to give picks to Baltimore just for them to take Lewis. They should be careful about what they're asking for, as they just might get it. Preston's 'one of the brightest minds in football' comment made me laugh out loud.

I am split on this one!!! I was and still am a ML fan, although I think he has lost respect and the HYPE has landed. I would definately not trade any picks to get Rex Ryan as D-Cord, that would be stupid. I would however, consider the draft picks for Lewis. If we are talking 1st and 3rd or 2nd, 3rd, and 4th or any combo with a first in the following year, I think you take it. Lewis is a good coach, but lets be honest, he hasn't done anything here. And although I don't blame the personnel, if that is the case, you need multple picks to build the team. And, the other poster has a point, there are a lot of good candidates out there including Schottenheimer, BILLICK (even though he faltered and was fired, he is a proven SB winner), Cam Cameron, and THE CHIN. Cowher likes a challenge, and with all those picks he could build something good. Is there anyone on here who believes ML is a better head coach than these guys, I didn't think so. A very interesting concept to consider, and I could see this happening if not for the Browns $$$ cheapness. To sign another coach means more money, and that isn't going to happen. I like Cowher as Coach and GM, not usually a good idea, but he is just so good at both and drafting is easy for him.

If they can get the Jon Gruden deal I would take it and hire Billick. He's kinda' jerky, but he went to the playoffs 4 out of 9 seasons and won a Super Bowl. Plus the Bengals desperately need high draft picks as they have many holes on defense and aging players on offense.

consider Marvin gone. His dream job is open and he can now pursue it all the while saving Mike Brown a few bucks and getting new talent on the field. Mike Brown is a genius!

Get rid of WhoDey. The new chant is:

Bengals are 8-8, ain't that great!
