Coyle a candidate: Hebert's background

-- Don't discount Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle in the race to become Bengals defensive coordinator as Chuck Bresnahan's replacement. He and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese are two of the hardest workers on the staff and are known for watching untold hours of film.

Coyle was defensive coordinator for five college programs: U.S. Merchant Marine, 1981; Holy Cross, 1986-90; Syracuse, 1991-93; Maryland, 1994-96; Fresno State 1997-2000. Then-Bengals defensive coordinator Mark Duffner, Coyle's boss at Holy Cross and Maryland, brought him to the Bengals after the 2000 season.

Coyle also isn't afraid to speak his mind with head coach Marvin Lewis.

-- Other defensive coordinator candidates are Carolina Panthers secondary coach Tim Lewis and former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, fired along with Brian Billick and his entire staff Monday.

-- This note from a column written and posted earlier this week by Paul Friesen on Slam Sports Canada about safety Kyries Hebert, signed to a two-year contract by the Bengals following four seasons playing in the Canadian Football League.

"Hebert's life appears to be at a crossroads, both professionally and personally.

Early this year he was charged with assaulting his wife, which is what initially scared off most CFL teams in the dispersal draft. The charges have since been reduced to misdemeanours through a plea bargain.

"I've taken 100 percent responsibility for the incident that occurred between my wife and I," Hebert said. "I've been in the church ever since, and I've sought out counseling. I'm a lot better person. Hopefully, through time, I'll build relationships and people will see who I am."
As a player, they already know, at least in the CFL.

Ottawa thought enough of him to sign him to a five-year contract in January, a deal the Bombers took over when they claimed him.

A hard hitter who can run, Hebert would look good beside free agent acquisition Barrin Simpson, especially now that linebacker Sean Woodson has retired.

But the Louisiana native says bigger things are calling him south.

"There's just so much I have on my table right now, as far as my family is concerned, as far as trying to make my marriage work. I mean, everything I need in my life is pointing me towards the NFL right now."

NO to Kevin Coyle! I believe everything about him, and that is why he needs to stay as the CB coach. They need the consistent coaching and this team needs a fresh change! Rex Ryan would be a nice choice, he fits the mold of the defensive look we need and is familiar with the division. Oh yeah, I know it is early, but the DC needs to be a guy who knows talent. And in a year that we need to draft mostly D line help, he has a good eye for talent.

Is it possible that guys who have stable personal lives and are good citizens are better disciplined football players, play better as a team and are able to gel? Is it possible, that dispite great individual talents, some guys can't be members of a team? Is it possible that police blotter bargains aren't the key to this team winning the super bowl?

Marvin Lewis is the problem. He is too soft on his players.

Historically, the Benagals have been successfull under tough coaches like Paul Brown, Forest Gregg, Sam Wych (before he got soft), and Bruce Coslet (before he tried to be the players friend).

Hebert might be the nicest guy on the planet... HOWEVER, doesn't this raise a red flag for the team, given it's recent history!?!? Police blotter bargain was the term used a few posts ago, and it couldn't be any more accurate. Can it be ANY MORE APPEARANT ownership/management of this team does not care about their image? Or really, winning? Exactly how does this guy, with his recent transgressions and the teams 'commitment' to staffing character guys, help the team?

Bravo on the decision to change Def Coordinator, long overdue.

Here a concept Mikey Boy, hire someone who has a resume and history of building and executing solid NFL defenses, not some unknown up and comer who we hope will blossom/grow into the role.

The only person I've heard of in that category is Rex Ryan, but I suspect Kevin Coyle could be had for much less $$$ so there is your answer. Anyone know what Ryan made last year?

Memo to self: Don't spend any more than you absolutely have to, remember 8 and 8 is great.

Anon 11:40 --

Isn't it possible that we shouldn't worry so much about a signing designed, in the first instance, to fill out the practice squad?

P.S. Tough coaches also have to be flexible and imaginative enough to change with the times. PB wasn't.

He passed on Bill Walsh to promote Tiger Johnson to head coach, he ran the organization with a skeleton staff and made his son Mike the "GM", and he allowed the Bengals' facilities to deteriorate to dismal and almost dangerous levels by the early 1990s.

PB is a legend for good reason, but he wasn't much help to us by the 1980s -- and the team has not yet fully adapted to the salary cap/free agency era some 15 years after it began.

Not to disparage the accomplishments or dedication of these two assistants; The fact that they are already under contract makes them frontrunners in the mind of this small minded owner.
I know we try to delude ourselves into thinking that
letting Bresnahan go will make a difference, but deep down we have to accept the fact that ours is a hopeless cause.
Even if the team were to improve significantly, the schedule next year makes 8-8 look like a pipe dream.

I could be hopeful and believe that we will hire some proven DC. But it won't happen. Mike Brown will promote someone from within and we will still see our CB's 10 yards off the line of scrimmage every play. Marvin is the head coach. He ok'd playing our CB's so far off the line that they can't see who the wideout is that they are covering! Unfortunately the defensive scheme will not change much because Marvin is ok with the scheme. If he is not ok with it then why did they run it? Useurhead.

If would be nuts to hire anyone other than Rex Ryan:

1. He has coached top 10 defenses for mor than five years running.

2. It would hurt Baltimore a team in our division.

3. because he was coach at Baltimore, he knows their personnel and weaknesses.

4. Terrell Suggs will be a free agent (unless he is franchised). What better way to recruit him than getting his old coordinator?

5. Plays the aggressive, swarming defense any team would want.

The whole thing is a Joke. I was optimistic about ML but I am starting to think he's soft. The comment about ML being fine with the D scheme is the truest thing I had ever heard. If there was a problem in his eyes he should have fixed it,but he never did all season!!!

Bengals are doomed with MB & his cohorts running this team.I;m a fan because of hometown pride and great memorys I had at Riverfront,w/ SW,BE,IW,KA,AM, TK, etc.... The bengals used to be a force to be reckoned with, then the 90's came(With a tag as worst sports franchise of the 90's,not worst NFL team WORST FRANCHISE) How many cities actually sue the Owner of a NFL TEAM because enough is enough.MB has used this city to his profit and cares nothing about you,me,or even the players.(Ever heard the story of how Kijiana Carter had to buy the good towels for the team out of his own pocket because the were using motel 6 material type towels, true story)

The D cord. should be proven!!!Bottomline!!!!!
Rob Ryan the D cord. from Oakland got fired from Oakland and he knows his stuff too just like his brother Rex That WOULD be a good fit.If K. Coyles was so good at coaching then why did we have toast for DB's all season. The 3rd down play was the killer, a toss for 12 yrds, 1ST DOWN Why because The db's were toast.(And yes alot of that was CB & ML's faults because of scheme, but Coyles is still a coach of that regime)We need outside blood to change the culture of this underachieving team.

I don't think we should replace the fired coaches. Who needs a separate defense "coordinator" anyway? We don't need scouts...then we don't need no fancy-dancy defense coordinators.

About as useful as a marriage coordinator.

Use the head coach. And all he has to do is say to the defenseive guys: "If he comes your way, tackle him. If they're throwing to him knock it down or knock the snot outta the receiver."

And if they don't, he kicks their ass.

See MBrown -- I just saved you some more cash.

(PS: no need for any offensive "coordinator" either.)

A couple of thoughts (since I now know I have a following.. more on that later):
1. Marvin has played the local media so badly that if you guys give him any quarter for the next 5 years that he is here, then you really are suspect. He gave the "Cleaning house" interview to the Columbus Dispatch on the same day he was still telling local sports reporters (aka, his beeotches), that nothing drastic would happen. Wow, what a slight and for what? You guys have given this guy the longest free pass in pro sports history.
2. Yes I said it, 5 years. Marvin is going nowhere. literally and figuratively. He is obviously going to be given the chance to rebuild this team as he will have sold the GALs and Mikey Mike on it taking a few years to see the results, and they will sell this rebuild to us on injuries, and fired coaches. It will be the old texas side step right here in Ohio. I figure it will take about 3 years to rebuild, have some success, then a dropoff in the 4th to 5th years and then a Marvin firing. The sad thing is, Marvin sold himself to Mikey Mike on the premise of building a program like the Steelers, long term coaches etc. Now you are all stuck with him.
3. Firing Bresnahan was stupid, plain and simple and he will come back to kill you in the end. Here's why: No one in the league could have had less to work with on D in the last two years than Chuck yet he has kept the Gals in games. Remember, this year the Gals D was not the issue. The offense couldn't do crap, and the D was on the field a lot. If I were the Ravens or any other team that is willing to go get the talent, I'd love to se eChcuk running my D. My point is, you could have Lebeau, Ryan, Phillips, Parcells, or even the genius in NE running this D but unless your GM/Owner/Pres/CEO/Maintenance man/valet/ will pay for talent or scouts to find talent, you will be subpar, always.
4. Yes, subpar, always. This is what you will be. look at the 40 years this team has existed and tell me that you have any reason to be optimistic in terms of success, let alone a dynasty. I think, and this will never happen, you should sue Mike. I think a contigent of wealthy fans should take up a class action suit and charge Brown with fraud. He sold the stadium on the premise that it will make the team competitive. He took tax money, and gets tax breaks on this very premise. Sue him for the exact amount the taxpayers put into the stadium. You can line up expert witnesses from around the league and through history and paint a bleak picture of how he runs things including the subsequent hiring of Bedinghaus. I think it is not only viable (thus protecting you from countersuit for fees etc), but is winnable if taken before the local federal district. At least, through discovery, you can expose this guy and the various idiocies he has displayed through the years.

A lot of the draft blogs on the internet have the Bengals taking Sedrick Ellis DT from USC with their first round pick. You did not include him in the 5 defensive players you listed in your article. I know it is real early but what are your thoughts on the Bengals drafting him?

Being a longtime Syracuse fan, I can tell you Coyle did a great job with his defense there. They beat Ohio State in the '92 Hall of Fame Bowl to go 10-2. His defense sacked Buckeyes quarterback Kirk Herbstreit four times.

They went 10-2 again the next year, and picked off Colorado QB Kordell Stewart three times to win the '93 Fiesta Bowl.

I was highly annoyed when Coyle left for Maryland.

All I'm saying is, Coyle is not some young up-and-comer who'll maybe develop into a good defensive coordinator. He's done it before at a high level. He's been coaching football for well over 30 years.

The Bengals were lucky to get him to coach defensive backs. All you have to do is look at their performance this past season. Look at the difference between that unit at the start of the year, and at the finish. Huge difference. That's a sign of good coaching. You didn't see that kind of improvement on the defensive line, for example.

Trust me, Coyle can coach. He could definitely handle the coordinator job.

Does Marvin Lewis have the confidence to hire a strong Coordinator, say someone who could take his job if the team continued to wander in a stupor...someone like Ryan?

And Mike Brown- hire a GM! The draft is approaching, once it becomes obvious to fans it is probably way overdue. Follow Parcells lead and hire a GM.

You know what they say, if you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always gotten.

Change it up!

Hmmm for all the hours of Video they watch, why they never see our Tight- end is hardly ever covered on the line?? That Carson will focus on ONE receiver instead of faking out the opposition and throwing to another receiver/tight-end? The Corners give 10 yard cushions when a opposition is 3rd and 7?
that this teams offense is so predictable, the opposition can figure it out and our own players cant?? NO THANKS...
Rex Ryan is the best choice, BUTR the sad thing?? MIKE BROWN is still in charge.. 1-16 in winning seasons!! NOTHING CHANGES

I know everything there is to know about football. If the Bengals would listen to me they would win the Super Bowl. The answer is as plain as the nose on Mike's face..... That is what all of you sound like. I am so sick of hearing all you EXPERTS tell us what needs to be done. Bottom line... The talent level is better now than when Marvin got here. The record of the team is better since Marvin got here. It certainly isn't Mike making the personnel decisions. There is a thin line between 8 - 8 and 10 - 6. The Bengals were terribly unlucky with injuries this year. Even with that they could have easily finished 9 -7. Relax people.

You just know they'll pick Coyle because they planted this story and he'll come the cheapest.

Plus if Rex Ryan is sane he'd stay the heck away from this franchise! Bresnahan is never going to work again in the NFL and if he does work it certainly won't be as a defensive coordinator. Marvin Lewis, with a couple more years in Cincy, will have to work at Dave Shula's pizza hut.

Marvin Lewis and his lil girl scout voice isnt gonna hire any Def Cordinator thats gonna make his Def Guru Ego look bad, thats why your gettin the no names for cordinators in here,he believes giving minorty chances knowing the Bengals have no choice or his lil girl scout voice gets more whinier cas she cant sell her girl scout cookies, enter your next Def Cordinator,Donnie Henderson,Marvin has had him with the team most of the season just for this reason. Can you imagine what Chuck had to be thinking when Lewis had Henderson overseeing the talent on the Def side of the ball from Preseason on? Think about it,Marvin isnt about winning, hes more now about minorties, the Bengals have no choice into listening to his lil girl scout whinney voice about it,he'll just up and take his Girl Scout Cookies and go home!

Are you serious? We are talking about football, not rocket science. The numerous problems with this team ARE obvious. Mike Brown DOES make personell decisions, and bad ones at that. I'd be happy to elaborate if you need me to. Who do you think signs off on free agents, or more correctly, DOESN'T sign off on free agents. You are exactly the type of person the Bengals rely on to keep this farce going.
