CFL safety Hebert in fold

The Bengals this afternoon announced that they have signed four-year Canadian Football League safety Kyries Hebert, who started the past two seasons for Winnipeg after playing his first two seasons in the CFL for Ottawa.

Hebert played college ball at Louisiana-Lafayette and is 6-feet, 3-inches, 220 pounds.

He will be 28 on Oct. 9.

Hebert comes aboard as the second Canadian Football League veteran signed by the Bengals in the past two years. On Feb. 13, 2006, the Bengals signed linebacker Rashad Jeanty, who has made 16 starts for Cincinnati after playing for three years at Edmonton.

Hebert's Winnipeg team advanced to the 2007 Grey Cup championship game, losing to Saskatchewan. The Blue Bombers had the CFL’s second-ranked defense.

A three-time team tackling leader at Louisiana-Lafayette, Hebert signed his first pro contract as a college free agent with Minnesota of the NFL in April 2002. He was on the Texans 53-player roster (inactive) for the final game of the 2002 season. He was briefly on Tampa Bay’s offseason roster in 2005.

Anybody want to bet their paycheck the Brown & Co will pick an inside man and leave a better pick alone because it would be too EXPENSIVE? Come on, ANYBODY I bet ANYBODY that that is what we will see. I watch with HORRIFIC fascination as the organization makes one blunder after another. It's like the adrenelin rush you get when you like......GET IMPALED! AAAAHHHHH!

OK, I need someone to enlighten me, since I didn't grow up here in the Cincy area as a Bengals fan.

This most recent signing, of a 28-year old CFL player, helps the Bengals in what way, exactly? First off, let's look at the facts. He's 28 years old. And STILL in the CFL. I'm gonna guess we're not talking about Ronnie Lott here. This is a move that just baffles me, with all the other needs the Bengals have.

Maybe they're hoping that the "Warren Moon factor" will strike, and this guy might actually turn out to be a good NFL player.

On second thought, no way.

Mike Brown is incompetent. They only get rid of two coaches? What a joke. Every single coach ought to go. Too bad the owner just won't admit that he's as bad at running a team as his Dad was good at it!

Give it up already, Mike! You know you're not only too cheap but too stupid to do what needs to be done!

And, can anybody say the name "Rex Ryan"? Hello.....Marvin? Mike? Bueller? Anybody?

Okay, I'll stop now. I was just thinking maybe the Bengals might be interested in hiring someone who had actually HAD success at the NFL level before. My bad.

In regards to the firing of Chuck, Do the Bengals have any coaches to promote from within. Do they bring young guys up through their staff? I feel every coaching opening is always an outside hire. Maybe Marvin should bring in some young guys teach them the game & promote from within. Any thoughts?

This guy has a history of off the field violence - against women - and should be (but for some luck and some strong lawyer-ing) a convicted felon. He should not be here.

Look Al --

First, no one signing is designed to cure all of the team's woes.

Second, I suspect the thinking is that the Bengals might need more depth at safety -- with the uncertainty around whether Williams and Jackson will be back.

Third, Rashad Jeanty came out of the CFL, and he seems to be doing pretty well (admittedly he is a bit younger).

So, don't be a hater.

P.S. I'd bet Ryan gets the Baltimore head job. The former Steelers/Giants D-coordinator that folks are rumoring about seems to have a good track record.

P.P.S. Blogger stinks.

Don't know much about this guy! How many goals did he have last year (ha) just kidding. If the statement about him having a criminal record is true than we just don't learn, but I can't comment because I don't know anything about him. In regards to promoting within...HUH! We are pitiful, why would we want to promote from within, that is the problem we've had for years (and the Reds), that is why we need a change. Hey Mike Brown, I am not going to call you stupid, but its time to take a look around. You are not getting it done, do what Castellini did, go out and hire a proven guy. How about this, Schottenheimer as GM, Lewis Coach, Cameron as Offensive Co. and Rex Ryan as Defensive Co. Sorry, I lost it there a moment....

Frank, is that really what the Bengals are looking for, or need? A Rashad Jeanty-level of production? And as for depth at DB, there are no practice squad guys or back-ups that they could look at? I think we can probably list the ex-CFL guys who have had success in the NFL on one finger - Warren Moon (maybe Doug Flutie). And in Mark's following post, we find the guy has a history of legal problems? I don't care if he says he's turned the corner. These guys ALWAYS say they've turned the corner. Some have, some haven't. And the Bengals most definitely do NOT need another guy with a questionable background.

Anon 9:35 --

You must be a youngster. Marvin Lewis and his group were the first outside hires in _forever_. Really.

I think Forrest Gregg and Sam Wyche were both from outside the organization, but those hires were 25-30 years ago.
