Lewis: Chad won't be traded

The Bengals had a news conference at 11 this morning to introduce Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator, but the most telling answer was head coach Marvin Lewis' take on Chad Johnson's radio-broadcast trade demand.

"There will be no trade of Chad Johnson," Lewis said after he and Zimmer both discussed the team's defense. "He felt he was unduly chastised, ridiculed, we defended him then. ... He is a professional football player. He is a Cincinnati Bengal for quite a while."

Lewis also left open the possibility of more changes on his coaching staff. Quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese has interviewed for the Rams offensive coordinator job. Falcons offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who coached Bengals wide receivers for three seasons, is rumored to be coming back to Cincinnati but is in the race for coordinator jobs in St. Louis and Washington.

"It is not an imminent possibility now," Lewis said of a potential Jackson reunion.

In Zimmer, 51, the Bengals have a coach with eight years NFL experience as a defensive coordinator. He is Lewis' third, a position, Lewis said, "I haven't got this right once before."

Lewis and Zimmer said they are philosophically aligned defensively, but that's what Lewis said three years ago about Chuck Bresnahan when he replaced Leslie Frazier.

Lewis said Zimmer's primary job is to create an identity with the defense. Lewis wants a tough, physical defense.

"To be tough, you have to be coached tough," Zimmer said. "I'm an aggressive coach, a tough coach. ... Typically, I can (holler) and (be a) screamer. I'm a stickler for doing things right -- big on technique, play hard all the time, (have) hands in the right place, feet in the right place."

I'm sure Zimmer is a good coach, but it doesn't matter. He will be Bunglized. Leslie Frazier = Superbowl ring with Indy (Who's DB's were a large reason they won the SB), then turned around Minnesota's Defense and is now interviewing for head coaching jobs. Chucky B came from a Super Bowl Oakland Defense, did he really forget everything when he came here? Every player & coach has success at other organizations, but never success here, even Marvin. 0 playoff wins in 17 years. The organization is a joke and will continue that way. Thank You Brown Family.

If this team thinks it is going to win with Landon Johnson and Dhani Jones as LB's....they will never win....why are TE's always open against us...because Landon is TOO Small to cover him. Dhani is great in run support, but he can't blitz and can't play the pass. We also have no middle at Safety or Defensive Tackle....soft middle...soft defense....Mike in Mason currently selling my PSL's on EBAY....DONE WITH THE BENGALS!

Zimmer is a solid choice, but I expect Rex Ryan to be on the market for the same job very soon. The real issue is whether the Brown family will give up some cap money to sign some good defensive linemen.

Unlike some people who are not TRUE fans (see above post) I am willing to give Zimmer a chance...

Go Bengals !!

Yep, does not matter. We could have Vince Lombardi coaching the defense next year, as long as MB is calling all the shots they will go nowhere. Perennial losers. They never get ahead, because they are always trying to cut corners with staff, salary, players, coaches, etc. But, as MB knows the sheep in Cincinnati will still come to the games. Traded in my season tickets for some Reds seats and a few Bearcat game. Tired of lining MB's pockets.

Agree it won't make much difference who is brought to coach the defense. You have to have the right players and the right scheme. Playing in their division you have tough, physical teams that like to run the ball. Our front four, like the rest of our defense is based on speed, not plugging the line. My wish list is to sign Albert Haynesworth, trade our #1 and #2 draft picks (along with Chad Johnson if it will help)to Miami and draft Dorsey from LSU. Then we will have a tough up the middle group which will make the rest of the defense better.

All I care about is not having to watch another regular season of preseason defense! I am so tired of watching our DBs stand 7-10 yards off the line on a 3rd and 4, or worse yet, 3rd and Goal on the 4! I am also tired of seeing our defense sit still for 4-5 seconds before every play, allowing the opposing QB the opportunity to plan the entire play before he hikes the ball!

All that said, if we don't bring in a MAJOR defensive free agent to lead this defense on the field through words AND dominating play, don't expect anything to change significantly...

I am convinced that the idiots in Cincy who simply listen to talk radio and only read the paper and simply parrot what they hear do not deserve a winning football team. Get a freakin life. Would YOU want to come play here? We build Chad up - he starts believing what the Enquirer writes about him - they turn on him and suddenly he is evil incarnate. To listen to people this year Palmer was the worst QB in the league. It's depressing.

I have lost confidence in Marvin, but at least he got the Chad call correct. He is going nowhere. He wasnt and aint the problem. Guy is a competitor who just needs to be coached from time to time. Could say the same about Carson and TJ.

I am glad Chad is staying! He is a top 5 WR, and is a hard worker. I believe things will be just fine with him, and I hope he learns from this experience. CHAD, forget about all the time thinking up new endzone dances, and concentrate more on watching the ball into your hands, too many dropped balls at big times.

As far as ZIMMER goes, I am willing to give him a chance. Maybe a change will be good for bothsides! The fact is, if we don't upgrade in some areas, it won't matter. Stopping the run is priority #1! Haynesworth or Allen must be signed by Cincy, there is no question about it. 2nd tier guys won't do and draft picks can't be relied on in the first year. Priority #2 is to get pressure on the ball! When we get healthy at LB, we have more than enough athletes there, we need a big time DE. I think we need to look at FA, but definately need to add a couple in the draft, and Gholston would ideal! After that, you have to look at upgrading the O-Line, and get younger. ITS ALL ABOUT BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION ON BOTH LINES, IT STARTS AND ENDS THERE.

We have the same HC....he is the problem on the field! We were a disgrace last year on & off the field!M.L. laughs and giggles after losses....I will NOT buy a ticket until he is fired!!!

I'm encouraged. 6+ years ago we would have thought 7-9 was a pretty good season. At least we now think that's a fire-the-coach season.

The defense improved in the second half, and if that can be maintained or improved further and coupled with a more team-focused receiving corps we should see 10-6 next year.

If the offensive line gets healthy we might even do better.

It won't make any difference if they don't spring for the impact players. Midlevel players will get you to 8-8 if all goes well, if not you get 7-9. I also think ML has his fingerprints all over the D but only enough to confuse it into disarray. Tell the owner and DC what you want and get the heck out of the way.

you know I agree about Mike Brown..it would be better if he stepped back..

For those of ya that know me I am not easily swayed by anything.. But..

If Odell does come back along with Ahmad Brooks ..with the addition of a good defensive tackle( maybe the draft) and the way that our secondary is playing..no more dexter jackson and Deltha...we just might have a decent defense

I sure would like to see the Bengals get Nakamura in the 3rd round if he is available

Lewis changed the chemistry slightly and this was good. zimmer is a tough Shanahan type of coach

Congratulations to Turk Schonert as the new offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.

My prediction is that he will be the next head coach of the Bengals in a couple of years.

Anyone who wants to complain or not buy a ticket, don't! Anyone not giving Zimmer a fair chance should be slapped, there is a reason no one posting on here is a NFL coach or assistant. Give the guy a chance, Rex Ryan may or may not have been the answer. We won't know. I agree with some posters, the scheme and the personnel are going to be the most important. Get that in place and there is no reason we can't be a middle of the pack or better defense! Personally, I like the idea of young guys playing and dropping some of the dead weight (dexter, john thorton, bryan robinson). No offense, but they're old and not good enough to improve our team. Give the young guys who fly around the ball and are aggresive the chance to play. With all of the young guys stepping up, what better time to bring a no non-sense dc in here. He's proven he can coach youngsters, no-namers, and big time studs (deon). To me that resume is pretty darn good. All you haters want to complain, and be mad, if you don't like it don't buy the tickets, the jerseys, or watch the games. Get over it, you're not going to make a change by complaining, haven't you learned that yet? No one outside of that locker room cares what you or I think. They want to win and get to the SuperBowl, just like MOST of us want them to be. All the people getting down on the Bengals will be the same ones bragging and talking crap for them when they're winning and in the playoffs. Don't just be a fan when we're good, be a true fan and deal with it and defend them in any and everyway you can. Who-Dey and I got faith in 08!

Nick Heb - Cincy

P.s. Chad if you read this, I've defended you non-stop, you're my favorite player in the league, don't get down, it's going to be better! I love your game, your antics (good and bad), you're my boy, stay up!

Marvin Lewis should either go into politics or get a job as a publicist for some troubled celebrity. The spin he put on Carson Palmer's comments after the season were nothing less than a work of art. Even though Carson stated very clearly, in a nutshell, "changes need to be made to the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball", Marvin spun it as frustration, Carson putting too much pressure on himself, etc.

Beautiful. Just a beautiful job of spin, non-answer answers, sleight of hand, refusing to address an important topic directly coach-speak. The guy's a genius. But, he'd also better pray he holds onto this job. If he ever loses this head-coaching gig, he has zero chance of ever getting another one in the NFL.

How about next time Marvin gives one of his standard non-answers, an Enquirer reporter steps up and slaps him upside the head? "Say something Marvin, anything".

He gets fired ... & then hired in a real national gig, at a higher salary. And he won't have to go to the "Marvin press conference torture" anymore.
