Brothers in arms

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

Jordan Palmer and big brother Carson talked before Jordan signed a two-year contract this morning to join the Bengals.

"We made sure we both understood that it's a business first, that I'll get out here and get my own life," Jordan told The Enquirer before boarding a plane back to California. "Still, whether it's football or another job, it's going to be fun to work with your brother."

Carson Palmer is 28 and headed into his sixth NFL season. Jordan is a first-year NFL player, a sixth-round draft pick last year by the Washington Redskins who played in just one preseason game before being waived Sept. 1. Jordan will turn 24 on May 30.

The reason Jordan was flying back to California?

"Carson is heading for the Super Bowl on Thursday," Jordan said. "I'm dog-sitting for him. Always the little brother."

Jordan is not physically little, just young. At 6-feet-5, 231 pounds, he started 42 games for Texas-El Paso and threw 88 touchdowns. The Bengals like his physical size, arm strength and overall strength.

"They see me as having the tools to play," Jordan said. "They have the confidence that they can coach and develop me into the player they want."

Coach? Jordan, through his brother, already knows quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese and offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski -- the only position coach and coordinator Carson has had in the NFL.

"They know I kind of fit the mold, too," Jordan said. "I'm not going to go in there and try to run around. I'm like Carson."

Jordan Palmer played in 46 career games (42 starts) for UTEP. He finished his UTEP career with 11,084 passing yards and 88 touchdown passes, both school records. As a senior in 2006, he set single-season records for passing yards (3595), completions (282), completion percentage (65.7) and passer efficiency (149.6).

The Bengals have two other quarterbacks under contract: Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jeff Rowe. Fitzpatrick is a restricted free agent, but he is expected to return to the Bengals. He was the No. 2 quarterback behind Carson Palmer.

When Jordan Palmer entered the 2007 draft, he and Carson didn't want Jordan to sign with the Bengals.

Why?

"There were 31 other teams out there," Jordan said. "It was important for me to go somewhere else and get my career established. Now it is different. He is a great guy to learn behind. I can learn a lot from Carson, and I will offer him all of the support I can."

Since he was waived by the Redskins in September, Jordan Palmer "flew all across the country and tried out for about 37 teams. I worked out. I got in great shape. I did some media and charity work. And I got ready for a chance like this."

Parents Bill and Danna Palmer are happy.

"Of course they are," Jordan said, "cheaper airfare and great photo ops."

So who are they going to cut?

I remember before the 2007 draft that the Palmer family did not want Carson and Jordan on the same team, because they thought that both were good enough to be starters. Apparently Jordan's unemployment situation has changed that thinking.

From the Bengals' perspective, does this mean the end of the Jeff Rowe era?

I recall Carson saying that he didn't want the Bengals to pick up Jordan. Any comment from Carson yet?

Great, more nepotism! Just what this team needs. What a blatant suck up to Carson. This move makes NO sense. They traded for Fitzpatrick and drafted Rowe. Assuming he does make the team by bumping either of those two, he would be a waste of previous draft picks. I guess that shouldn't surprise me.

This looks like an attempt to appease Carson, since when he left town after the season he stated that he didn't feel things could be fixed without changing coaches.
Well guess what... no coaching changes on the offense. How bout we sign your brother instead?

Wow,
That'll be awkward when they have release him.

The Bengals are still spinning their wheels. How about doing something meaningful to fix the chemistry of this team by trading Chad for DEFENSE!

So we have two of our best players... Chad and Carson... Chad is already upset with the organization... I clearly remember Carson saying he didnt want his brother on the team last year... Unless he changed his mind i think this organization is trying its hardest to ruin itself and implode............................ Also, 12:25 Jeff Rowe was a wasted pick anyways. What difference does it make. Plus Jordan may be good because who else will know the system better besides Carsons (his brother[and every defense in the NFL])

Weird....just plain weird.

Maybe little brother can play, who knows? The Redskins didn't see it. How can he compete on an even playing field here, he'd have to beat out his brother and if he did, can you imagine Carson's reaction? Backups are worthless unless they want to start and beat out the guy in front.

One more bizarre personnel move in a long long list of them...I agree with the poster above who mentioned nepotism. Hey, Mike, could you check and see if Dave Shula has a son, let's get him to take over for Marvin. Oh and could you try to sign some more Ivy Leaguers?

For an Ivy Leaguer, Mikey Boy, you sure are one dumb GM.

And like someome else said, how awkward will it be to cut him? I can see it now, little brother gets cut, Carson doesn't agree, gets pissed and joins T.J. and Chad in leading the league in pouting. Now that's something to look forward to.

In the meantime, the Bengals have three bad backups instead of two.

Its funny but i dont get it? How does this make sense coming from a 6th rounder that was released from the redskins after one preseason game........????????

good move by the Bengals, maybe now Carson palmer can stop acting like a little punk. maybe now carson palmer can have somebody to lean on instead of having the media cover his ass when he makes a mistake. Remember"80% of the arrant throws were because receivers ran the wrong route crap"? maybe now carson palmer can grow a pair instead of acting like alittle rich white boy from the culdesac who is scared of his inner city raised receivers. Jusy maybe, but something tells me the media in this town has invested to much into making carson the next and greatest white hope/gloden boy. One things for sure, Cincinnati media types love their white athletes ad despise the big mouth, highly athletic balck athletes.

Jordan Palmer is a stud with the same capabilities as Eli Manning. He will be the second string quarterback and by game four next year, you will see this for yourselves as he will come in the game when Carson gets hurt.

God

I believe Fitzpatrick is a free-agent, and therefore, apt to leave.

This is the only way Mike Brown knows how to ruin, I mean run, an organization. He does hire for competancy in management, (only nepotism) what should be different for the players?

No disrespect to Jordan, but what a useless move. Unless you can teach Jordan to do something else, who cares how good he actually is. The Palmers are not the Barbers.

Just like Mike, Katie, Troy and Marv. We'll fix this team--let's start by finding the right third-string QB. Probably the last big move of the off-season.

Hmmm... Maybe Chad has a brother we could sign too?

OH, I get it now....

They're gonna switch him to defensive end. Makes perfect sense, how could I be so dumb?

Can't wait for the photo ops. Might take my mind off the score. Oh and Jordan,so glad you waited to get your career established before coming here: trying out for 37 teams, not making one, should be enough prep to play for the Bengals.

What a bunch of hoooey.

And the beat(ing) goes on in Bengalville.....

We gave up a draft pick for Fitzpatrick, now we might have a chance to deal him or Rowe for a 2009 draft pick. Why's everyone all bent-out-of shape about this pickup? Let's be serious, is Jeff Rowe any better than Jordan? If Free Agency comes and goes and we did nothing but sign a Kendrick Allen, then everyone can start cryin......

"Cincinnati media types love their white athletes ad despise the big mouth, highly athletic balck athletes."

When you don't have a good point to make just use the race card.

Simply put...this is really stupid.

Only the Browns could do something has simplistic and mom-and-pop as this. "Hey...let's sign his brother." Combine this with the CJ news and it's enough to make me want to puke.

Hudepohl Dey,

There is already too much family involved in this organization. The term is nepotism, and it usually doesn't work. My point is why trade for guys or even draft them, if you're going to replace them with an UFA that costs you nothing? The Bengals CANNOT afford wasted draft picks. You're dreaming if you think anyone will trade us for our backup QB's.
