Roster analysis: Defensive backs

Eighth in a series

Today: Defensive backs

Starters: Right cornerback Leon Hall, left cornerback Johnathan Joseph, strong safety Dexter Jackson, free safety Madieu Williams

Backups: Cornerback Deltha O'Neal, strong safety Chinedum Ndukwe, free safety Marvin White, safety Herana-Daze Jones (injured reserve), cornerback Blue Adams, safety John Busing, safety Kyries Hebert, cornerback David Jones

Youth was served in 2007, and youth served back. In the final two games, the Bengals started three rookies (Hall, Ndukwe and White) and second-year cornerback Joseph. They stuffed the high-flying Browns pass game with four interceptions, two by Ndukwe.

Maybe a testament to the lack of playmakers on the Bengals defense, but Ndukwe created more excitement with his play as a rookie than any Bengals defender in recent memory. His intelligence, instincts and effort more than make up for what might be a slight lack of speed. White is a hard hitter that has been missing, too. Hall rebounded from a slow start to show the savvy that made the Bengals call him pro-ready on draft day.

Joseph came back from a stress fracture in his foot to show the same closing speed that he displayed as a rookie.

Williams is a free agent the Bengals would like to re-sign; he wants to stay. Jackson might be released, though he has two years left on his contract. O'Neal has a year left on his deal and has asked directly and through the media to be released. But O'Neal's experience was a huge asset when he came in as a third cornerback. He still can play at a high level, though his inconsistency can be maddening to coaches and fans.

Question: How comfortable are you if the Bengals decide to go with Ndukwe and White as their starting safeties in 2008? Or do you re-sign Williams, who also can play cornerback?

More comfortable than having Williams and Jackson back there

Williams may very well be the most important re-sign we can make. With O'neal leaving (most likely) we need someone that can still help out these young players (and has the ability to play nickle if he must). Dexter could but he isnt quite the producer he use to be. Re-sign Williams, switch it up with White and Ndukwe, if we release dexter then we should still try to get another veteran DB through free agency. We dont need to spend too much money in the back field but we do need leadership... and that goes for the whole defense (and team for that matter). I know we havent quite been the best passing game unit in the NFL but we sure as heck have the potential to be one of the best. We really need good pass rushers. Champ Bailey, Chris McAllister, Bob Sanders, and Ed Reed would get smoked all day if the QB had nobody in there face. WE NEED A D-LINE.

Sign Williams. Drop Jackson and O'neal.

We tried bringing in a veteran DB two years ago -- it didn't help.

I'm not comfortable with Ndukwe and White, but I wasn't any more comfortable with Williams and Jackson. We have our starting CBs for the next few years in Joseph and Hall -- let them develop without the distraction of O'neal. Start Williams and Ndukwe/White; add the other in the nickel.

This has to be cheaper than carrying O'neal and Jackson another year. Use any money you save by cutting Jackson and O'neal (and others?) to shore up special teams.

As 9:01 said, though, none of this matters if the DBs have to cover for 6 seconds.

Definitely re-sign Williams. Ndukwe and White are good, but they are also cheap right now, so take advantage of that and keep the depth at safety.

What about Kilmer and Herana-Daze Jones? Why aren't they in your list? Will H-D Jones be a Bengal in 2008?

Where is Herana-Daze Jones? He is a special team ace, yet wasn't even listed on your group!?

Hey Mark, what about Ethan Kilmer? Did I miss something?

I don't understand how the Bengals can want to re-sign Madieu, who is not a real playmaker at his position, when they have a lot of depth there in White, Nduwke, even Busing, Herna-Daze Jones and Kilmer. Landon Johnson would be the better re-sign, as he's more of a playmaker at his position than Madieu, he's proven more durable than Madiue, and there is weak depth at LB.

Put the money for Madiue and Dhani towards Ben Troupe or a veteran cornerback like Pat Surtain that might be released.

I wouldn't be THAT comfortable with Ndukwe and White back there but the first comment hit the nose- would you be any more confident with Jackson and Williams? I also noticed a lot of plays this season that O'Neal didn't put out 100% effort- that's not real leadership...get people in here that care and that show effort...and another thing off the subject- I'm tired of Chad Johnson dropping passes and getting false starts.

YES ! First of all, we need DLine to help pretty good DBs...

Really confortable with Hall, Joseph, Ndukwe and White...

Release Jackson and O'neil, don't overpaid Williams.

Select a CB in the late rounds draft.

Does it frustrate anyone else that Chad wants to go to Miami and is openly talking about it. It did all start with this city jumping on his case for dancing... and a QB argument. WHICH WAS STUPID. QB's and Receivers argue... Its called passion. I recall a few times last year that carson argued with his receivers and not a word was said (Henry against the Ravens doesnt count). Who Dey Carson Palmer and Who Dey Chad Johnson... if it wasnt for the both of them we wouldnt be half as good as we are.

First off at 1 mill I think it's a good Idea to keep O'Neil as your 3rd DB. I would try to get a deal done with Willams He is a soild player. I like Ndukwe and White back there they will make some plays. Don't forget the kid signed from the CFL he is a ball hawk and a hard hitter. I like Joseph and Hall as your starters. and If the DB out of Michigan is there in the third rd I take him. Dexter is gone he might be a leader but he has lost a step

Cut Jackson and save $1.25 million against the cap. Re-signing Williams is a good insurance policy if Marvin White isn't ready. But Williams' performance has declined since his shoulder injury and seems incapable of running with better tight ends. The Bengals need a veteran a FS, it may just not be Williams. I would keep O'Neal who has been productive as a nickel corner, but if you do release him who replaces him as the third corner? I thought the 4 young guys played well together at the end of the season. The Bengals should look to add veteran depth through free agency. Also, drafinting a safety and/or CB in rounds 5-7 may not be a bad idea to add depth.

I completely agree with gabb.

Would be nice have some veteran leadership with Madieu in the fold, but only at a decent price.

Get a real D-line for once, and the entire secondary automatically gets alot better.

I agree with previous post! We should drop O'Neal and Jackson. We have some young guys who need some more seasoning, however, I feel they can learn on the job and produce as well as those two. I believe after this season, it is time to take a look at cutting a lot of guys for salary cap reasons. Rudi/Perry - Willie - Frostee/Justin - and these two. I think the DB's will be o.k, probably get burnt several times, but overall will be good......AS LONG AS WE FIX THE PROBLEMS ON THE LINE. It all starts up front, if the Line doesn't get pressure on the QB, you can't expect guys to cover receivers for 8 or 9 seconds.

...and now Kyries Hebert enters the mix. Does this mean that Madieu is history?
