Back to football

For now, today, Chad Johnson is quiet.

If the tour of radio row and NFL Network at the Super Bowl, as well as the scripted message delivered Wednesday by Johnson, were the ideas of agent Drew Rosenhaus, credit Rosenhaus for doing his job.

If Johnson wants a new contract with a new team, he hired the right man in Rosenhaus. Look at what the agent has done for client Terrell Owens and many other NFL players. He's made them very rich men.

Some thoughts:

-- Chad Johnson was not the reason the Bengals were 7-9 last season. Coach Marvin Lewis and team president Mike Brown both defended Johnson from media criticism and talked of his value to the team.

-- If the Bengals are my team, I build around quarterback Carson Palmer. As long as he's throwing the ball and running the offense, you have a chance to win.

-- I take a serious look at going to the three-four defense with four linebackers. Odell Thurman appears to be on his way back from league suspension. He will have a chance to work with new position coach Jeff FitzGerald and coordinator Mike Zimmer, both self-described taskmasters.

-- If I were a Bengals fan, I like the fact that Zimmer ran into linebacker Ahmad Brooks in the locker room a couple of weeks ago doing rehab on his surgically-repaired groin. A second productive offseason in a row from Brooks is a harbinger of good things for the Bengals defense.

-- Add bodies to the offensive line, defensive line and secondary in the draft and free agency.

-- Re-sign linebacker Landon Johnson and safety Madieu Williams. Bringing Williams back allows the Bengals to let Deltha O'Neal go (he wants out with one year left on his contract) because Williams could work as the third cornerback or the nickel defender. Williams worked in that role in training camp last season.

-- Besides leading the defense in tackles three of the past four seasons, Johnson has worked on the punt cover team as the signal caller in front of Kyle Larson.

-- Run the ball next season. Make sure Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry and Kenny Irons have productive rehabs this offseason. Bring Johnson to training camp and see how he looks.

-- Keep close tabs on the health of offensive tackles Willie Anderson and Levi Jones.

-- If swingman Stacy Andrews is asking for starter's money, pay him. He is an invaluable sixth man on the offensive line and has a perfect attitude and work ethic.

Very Well said mark. This O-line is falling apart from time to time and we shouldn't gamble with out players like Andrews. This franchise did have Chads back for the big picture. We really should wait until training camp to see how things will go with Rudi, Ahmad, Odell, and a possible 3-4 defense. I strongly recomend resigning Williams and Landon. Williams may not be fantastic and i am sure we are investing a future into Ndukwe and White but we need an insurance Safety/nickle. With the probable departure of Oneal and the lack of experience in the back field we need Williams. Johnson......... well, if the money is right then why wouldnt we sign him. Focus on team needs and not Chad needs. I AM A HUGE CHAD SUPPORTER, but i dont remember the franchise or the city doing anything to deserve what he is putting us through. If he stays and doesnt complain, I and many are most likely willing to forgive... but this has gone too far.

Chad Johnson used to be one of my favorite bengals. That has since changed. Message for Chad.... The reason the fans love you is because (in the past) you seemed to be a team player. Now for some reason you have gone the rout of T.O., Carl Pickens, and Corey Dillon. Why would you want to be one of those guys?? Why can't you (and more pro athletes) be like Barry Sanders? Catch a TD pass, hand the ball to the ref! Act like you've done it before. Marvin Harrison doesn't have to dance and everyone knows how great he is. L.T. doesn't have to put on a H.O.F jacket on after he scores. You are a great receiver and a piece that could help get the bengals to the Super Bowl soon. Stop listening to bad advise from your agent. You will get your money if that is what your problem is. Be someone you can be proud of after you retire. Your current course of action will not get you there!

I agree with every point you make, Mark. Is it determined how many compensatory picks the Bengals will pick up? Two spots I think will need to be addressed earlier rather than later in the draft is wide receiver and center.
Chad and TJ are both closer to the end of their careers than the beginning, Chris Henry is one moving violation away from being out of the league, Tab Perry's proper role is special teams and as we have seen, exposing him to any more than that has taken a toll. After that who is there?
At the center position, Eric G. hasn't been able to stay in the lineup, and when he's in there, he struggles with the big 3-4 tackles.

If Chad wants to go, let him. I'll take a first-round pick with probably something else. He wasn't the problem nor the solution last year. This team should be built around CARSON not 85.

If Chad is just talking during the off season and performs once the season starts we'll be fine. If he pulls a T.O. or a Pickens then Bengals Mgt needs to get rid of him as he will poison the team regardless of any moves we make. Should we trade him now or just hope for the best in September?

Mark,

Have you heard anything about how Ahmad Brooks and Tab Perry are doing after having surgery?

Also did Chad Johnson already have surgery to clean out his ankle?

So long Chad! This is one fan that prefered Franco Harris types to Erick Dickerson types. LEss talent if it means less mouth and more team focus is just fine with me. Nobody is blaming you for the 7-9 seaon and nobody is giving you credit for it either! Keep running your big mouth, keep feeding your huge ego and by all means keep up the great marketing strategy! Maybe you'll get lucky and end up with a ring. But that is not really what you care about is it? All you care about is CHAD. Tell your agent to get your sorry butt traded....Cincinnati fans, the Bengals and the NFL deserve better than what you have given them recently! Good luck you idiot!

I would add that they should keep LBs Dhani Jones & Lemar Marshall, both solid veterans - the type of veterans that New England has: versatile, smart, & hungry.

Wow, read Doc's artical about chad. It hits it right on the Head. We need great players at more impotant positions (D-Line, O-Line). Wide receiver is replacable when you have a great line and a great QB. All i know is, "I SUPPORT THE BENGALS BEFORE I SUPPORT A PLAYER OR COACH" (even if it was Carson or TJ). If we can get a better Offensive lineman or Defensive Linemen then lets trade Chad.....

Let's think... Who has a well off pash rushing unit that is lacking at receiver?????????????????

Chad is a "PITA" Pain In The Ass, trade the cry baby and then we can get along with our season and it would be great to see the Bengals in the playoffs and then "PITA" can be on one of the stations doing what he does best" run his mouth" giving color comentary, while his team is on the sidelines watching the playoffs, all he has turned into is a smaller version of that other big mouth TO , so pleases Marvin trades this idiot for a good pass rusher or top draft pick . "PITA" keeps the Bengals in the news media all the time and it is always negative and gives the bengals a bad name, so let "PITA" go and get on with coaching the "TEAM" Marvin not one idiot.

People, the simple truth is that the Bengals can not afford to trade Chad Johnson. Not becasue he is an all world receiver but becasue the cap hit would casue them to be unable to sign any of our free agents much less other teams free agents. It is a stupid and pointless debate, one we as a city just need to drop. Why is it we needed to build this issue up which only makes things worse in the long run. When Chad says nobody has his back he means you as fans as much as anyone. Let it go. 85 is and always will be in Cincinnati (and thats a good thing!)
On a related note, Mark gets called "yellow" for sticking by the team (positive spin on issues) while Thom Brennaman get ripped for telling the truth (mostly negative but true). Make up your minds people.

This team has bigger issues than worrying about Chad's bruised ego or giving him a new deal (again). I wouldn't trade him. If he is still doing this tired "Trade Me" routine come summer I would just sit him. See how he likes not playing and, hopefully, the Bengals can win without him. That would be the ultimate slap in the face to Chad. The Bengals have a lot of needs and question marks right now on the roster including DE, DT, LB, RB, TE, WR, and O-Line. These positions need to be solidified before worrying about Ocho Stinko.

Chad said that Housh and Carson were the only ones in the locker room that 'had his back.' I would bet that is really only Housh. Carson would publicly defend Chad because that's the way Carson is, he's not going to dress his teammate down in the media. But I'll bet in the back of his mind after some of those touchdown celebrations he's thinking, "you know, I played a part in making that touchdown, and the line played a part in that touchdown." Who's back has Chad ever 'had?'

I just wish he'd stop making such a fool of himself because he does come off as someone who might be a nice guy down deep.

I agree with you Mark! I would also add the following: Keep Dhani Jones and release Lemar. Add up a good DT such as Ellis or Dorsey. Sign up another LB through Free Agency. I really hope MB is reading your thoughts.

This is the best headline written here in weeks.

The fans and media need to just ignore the whole Chad thing, he will do what he will do. I don't care if he cries like a baby for the next 2 years, as long as he keeps producing on the filed.

The organization should go about its business, ala the Bears handled Lance Briggs. If nothing else, it keeps the Bengals in the news, and they even post his videos on bengals.com

Chad is under contract for two more years. In the end, he will have to just show up and do his job. If he keeps his current pro bowl level of performance he will be well worth the money, and any distraction.

In two years, if he wants to leave then he can leave and sign a very lucrative new contract. In the meantime, lets keep our focus and build a better team, starting from the lines on up.

Mark,

You drink the Bengals Kool Aid too much....LANDON JOHNSON IS NOT THE ANSWER AT LB....For you uneducated Fans and Media, he tackles people 5-7 yards down the field. When has he ever made a tackle for loss.

He is a loser and we should let him go while we have the chance.

Mark I am with ya for the most part. With the exception of Rudi and Perry, its time to move them on. Willie should be gone, great player but his time has come, maybe a line coach here. The main thing I disagree with is the Geathers issue. He is not a LB, he is an end and should be playing there. The 3-4 issue is a bad thing for the Bengals, we do not have the players, coaching, or insight to make it work. Our 4-3 defense has not been our problem, it has been Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis not having the proper scouting and drafting, and NOT GOING AFTER THE FA we need. Stay at the 4-3, use the LB for its depth it has, not an excuse to change. Keep Geathers on the line and add Haynesworth or Allen at the DT spot with Peko. Draft a stud DE with the #9 and then a DT with your second round pick, and HOPEFULLY Pollack can comeback and add depth and energy to the other DE spot.

Mark: In your assessment of the Bengals, you fail to mention M.L.!! WHY Not????This guy falls on his face & you don't have the guts to even bring up his name??? If you are a coward...get out of town!!! MAN UP!!!!

Sooooooooo, let me get this straight.

12:28

thinks that if we get rid of Landon Johnson we are all of the sudden going to have this amazing all pro linebacker... because it would be the bengals to sign an all pro free agent!?!?!?You know what, he does make tackles 5-7 yards down the field. So, does the Rest of the team. I would rather have a linebacker do that than a lineman. This is true, he is a solid mediocre player. However, he does alot better then most of our inconsistently bad players with a flash of talent once every blue moon. We must be idiots. I cant believe we would even ponder the thoughts of re-signing a consistant tackler. I say we get rid of him and let his back-up go in and instead of making tackles 5-7 yards down field, lets let him miss it at 1-3 and leave it to our secondary which is a bunch of tackling mavericks.

Firefly,

Are you suggesting that since MB and ML are heading this team that we should make absolutely no adjustments at all as far as strategy. dont get me wrong i can see where you are coming from with geathers. but if they switch to a 3-4 i doubt they will forget how to play a 4-3. You just proved my case and point of moving to 3-4. WE HAVE DEPTH at linebacker. (not according to 12:28, but he also suggested we get rid of one.)We have jack squat at lineman though. i doubt we resign Smith and then we have Peko, Thorton, Rucker, Fanene, Meyers, and Geathers. Other than Geathers, none of that sounds to great. At linebacker we will have, Brooks, Jones, Johnson, Thurman, Jeanty, and i doubt we leave it alone from there but never the less we will have a talented core of backers. Hopefully we pick up a man in the front 7 in the draft and free agency. seriously we may not be completely built for a 3-4, but what has shown you that we where made for a 4-3. (oh yeah, and seriously, dont count on pollack being back. an angel loses its wings every time you say that. -he had a neck injury for pete rose sake)
Wow, you should both be coaches!

Mark, sorry but you don't get it and never have. I'm going to come across as a jerk but you need to report on something you know about which, unfortunately for the readers, is not football. This team has enough "bodies" at the O and D lines. What the Bengals need is warriors at these positions who are winners. We don't need anymore guys like Levi Jones who play for a paycheck and have no heart. When was the last time this team consistently controlled the line of scrimmage. I'll tell you, Munoz, Montoya, Krumrie, etc. It's been a long time. It will never matter how good Carson is or who surrounds him at the skill positions unless he first gets guys who can protect him and block for the running backs. This team is in freefall and only the easiest schedule in the NFL last year allowed them to post a pitiful 7-9 record. Regardless of their off season moves, they still have an unqualified head coach who does not command an ounce of respect from his players. With a tougher schedule next year, 5 or 6 wins is as good as it's going to get.
