Report: Chad might sit if no trade

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

Will Chad Johnson sit out the 2008 season?

ESPN.com reporting today that the Bengals wide receiver might not play this coming season if he is not traded. The Web site cited an unidentified source.

Reached this afternoon by The Enquirer, Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson's agent, said he had not seen the report, had not talked to reporter Chris Mortensen and did not know the identity of the unnamed source.

"Chad Johnson will play football in 2008," Rosenhaus said when told of the ESPN.com report.

Will Johnson be playing for the Cincinnati Bengals?

"Our plan is for Chad Johnson to play football in 2008," Rosenhaus said. "That is how I will respond to the report."

The Bengals chose today not to respond to the ESPN.com report, said club public relations director Jack Brennan.

The Bengals would be hurt significantly on the salary cap if they were to release Johnson.

The Bengals signed Johnson to a six-year contract extension in April 2006. They tore up a deal that had four years remaining. Johnson is under contract with the Bengals through 2011. The total deal is worth $35.5 million, $16 million of which was paid in the past two years.

If they were to trade Johnson, use the Corey Dillon situation as an example, I can't see the Bengals budging for less than a second-round pick. That's the round they took Dillon. That's the round they took Johnson. Dillon had just finished the 2003 season, during which he turned 29. Dillon turned 30 in October 2004, his first season with New England. Johnson turned 30 last month.

there's no turning back, he tears the locker room apart. keep him and deactivate him. sit him for the next four seasons until his contract runs out. lets see how big of a contract he gets in 2011 after not playing football for 4 years. take the power away from drew rosenhaus and the other players.
players will be less inclined to hold out if they look at what happened to chad johnson, who lost his football career.

Mark,
Would Chad sitting out be the best option for the Bengals? They wouldn't have to pay him, but would he still count against the cap?

make him sit. make him sit on the sideline or at home until his contract is up and he's a 34-35 year-old who hasn't caught a ball in four years.

Chad has done this to himself. He is the one who 'was called a cancer' and is acting like a cancer now.

I'm fine with paying him to stay home and sit. Not a problem at all.

It's so sad. Chad always said he considered himself an entertainer and now it turns out he's more like Terrell Owens than he ever let on. Chad get over it! Get over yourself and play football! Maybe if you concentrate on that you'll stop dropping easy catches on 3rd and long as you did all season.

Let him hold out for the the next 4 years. He is a big disappointment with what he is doing. Another case of a ego getting to big. Just go to work and do your job like everyone else in the world has to when its not going exactly like they want. Chad gets paid much more than the everyday joe who comes to the game and supports him. Shut his career down if thats what he wants.

Hi Mark,
Is there any way the Bengals (or the league) could suspend Chad for the season (without pay) for conduct detrimental to the team? Something needs to be done to prevent this type of behavior.

He would still count against the cap, but they would not have to pay him if he sits out. If he reports and they deactivate him they have to pay him unless they come up with a reason to suspend him for some number of games.

Chad really IS a cancer and he is proving it every time he opens his fat mouth. My kid tossed her Chad jersey and I would bet that Chad is losing support amongst most fans.

TJ is the number 1 WR on this team and Henry should be given a chance to be the #2. It might hurt the Bengals to sit on him but there isn't any way that I release him or trade him for a 2nd round draft pick. You help nobody in either case but Chad and he doesn't deserve it.

If he refuses to report let him sit on his butt for 4 years as was mentioned. He wouldn't make it through the first season. His selfish, ego driven antics being the only thing that he cares about he would report by week 2.

mike brown will not let chad guy for less than a first round pick or an equal player there is no way. Dillon didn't play as much the year he was traded chad is still at the top of his game. If i were mike brown I would not give chad up for less than 2 first round picks.
If chad does not like it he can lose all of that money!

chad aint gonna sit out for less than three or four plays once the season begins lets get real

Chad, Corey, this sort of stuff will continue to happen until the organization gets a clue. This is the worst run franchise in any sport. Even Carson left frustrated this year. Good for Chad. I wouldn't want to stay with this lousy team either. I wish Mike Brown had left Cincinnati years ago when he threatened to. By now our team would be successful again, like the Browns. But now we will stink until Brown dies or the team goes bankrupt, because he will NEVER change.

Addition by subtraction. Let him sit out the year - the team gets better and makes a run deep into the playoffs and Chad gets to watch from his home with his buddy, Drew. How cool would that be. He's another in the list of talented players who ruined their careers by putting their ego first. Chad is proving by his actions that there really were problems inside the locker room last year and the problem was . . . CHAD! In no way should the Bengals let Chad call the shots in this situation.

Who is the source, a 14 year old kid?

at 2/03/2008 3:13 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Where are all the people who said, "typical Cincinnati media blowing a story out of proportion. Every one in Cincinnati is racist and this is an example."

Please come defend Chad and tells again why Mark Curnutte was making this up and was using "yellow journalism".

Chad needs to go. The Bengals will not, I repeat, will not get a first round pick for him. In the NFL first round picks are held in high regards and Chad probably won't get a first rounder in return. Look for a player and a second round pick for him. Cut him loose before he causes even more problems.

Good riddance.

I'll believe it when I see it happen! Until then, even remotely listening and responding negatively because "a source" (a coward who remains nameless)said so is stupid.

Step up and validate your source Chris Mortenson and other "shabby" analysts and sportswriters, who love to try and keep "crap" started. Has Marvin or Chad confirmed this so-called story yet?

at 2/03/2008 3:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

He's making himself less attractive for a trade by letting this play out in the media. Anyone who thinks another team will give up 2 first round picks to get Chad Johnson is crazy. Think about it - Randy Moss was traded for a 4th round pick.

The Bengals signed Johnson to a six-year contract extension in April 2006. They tore up a deal that had four years remaining. Johnson is under contract with the Bengals through 2011. The total deal is worth $35.5 million, $16 million of which was paid in the past two years.

Johnson's contract calls for a $3 million base salary in 2008, and he would count $6.3 million against the Bengals salary cap next season. That cap number would go up to $8.8 million if he were traded or released.
Chad has a very short memory from the time he signed that contract which gave him a significant raise. Let him sit it out and I hope he will be happy. He has finally proven to me he is a CANCER to this team. I gave him the benefit of the dought before this.

at 2/03/2008 3:19 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

He signed a contract that said he would get paid more if the team traded him or released him. Now that he wants to be traded doesn't that mean the team has the right to re do the contract so they can trade him and not get a cap hit. Also isn't Chad obligated to re do the contract so he can get traded if thats what he wants.

at 2/03/2008 3:24 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is a typical Drew Rosenhaus
ploy. He did it with Owens and others and now he is doing it with Chad.

It is just an attempt to get Chad a new contract or traded to what he considers a more attractive team.

The Bengals need to stick to their guns and let Johnson sit if necessary.

I hope the Bengals keep Chad Johnson and let him sit out the 2008 season. Then fine him for every meeting, practice and game he misses.

Gang, despite Rosenhaus' denials, he is the unnamed source. This is one of those deals where Rosenhaus gets to float a story and see what the reaction is, and Chris Mortensen gets a "scoop" for ESPN.

The conversation between the two went something like, "You can say that Chad might sit for 2008, but you can't use me as the source." This way, the story gets out, Mortensen can cover his butt with his editors if they ask who the source is.

And it is no surprise that he denied everything in his interview with the Enquirer. That's how agents operate in this day and age.

at 2/03/2008 3:29 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is anyone really surprised by this? As soon as Dufus Rosenhaus got involved the clock started ticking toward this end.

Besides, when was the last time Chad actually ran the right route. Seems to me he broke off his route depending on who was about to crack him.

How good does TJ look now?

at 2/03/2008 3:49 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

why is there a cap hit for trading him? That seems bogus and unfair to both the Bengals and the player. They should be able to amicably part ways. I understand releasing him isn't an option, but with that cap hit, there's no way to trade him and that's BS.

at 2/03/2008 4:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am tired of this crap. Chad is a punk. He has the "look at me" syndrome. Problem is, TJ is better than he is.

Sit him or trade him, just don't play that cry baby!

What about trading Chad to Miami for a first round pick? We could land Dorsey from LSU in the draft, replace Justin Smith. That could free up salary space too.

i'm not a bengals fan (go seahawks!) but having grown up in ohio and having moved back to cincy a couple of years ago... i'm sick of chad johnson.

on the one hand, i do appreciate a guy who really doesn't seem to talk trash with any malice towards his opponents - it seems like nobody around the league really hates the guy even for all his, uh... flamboyant talk.

even so, i think this guy has turned into poison in the bengals clubhouse. i want to see the bengals do well (unless they play my 'hawks) since i love cincy, and i don't think it's going to happen while this guy is here. rosenhaus is the real cancer in the nfl. chad johnson has listened too much to his hype and not concentrated enough on winning football games.

it seems that the bengals, in general, need a culture change. trading johnson (i wouldn't let him go for less than a 2nd round pick, out of principle) or letting him sit out seems to be the way to go. i've never seen a player worshiped more by fans for having done so little in terms of winning games. he needs to be knocked down a peg.

i agree with some earlier comments - his ego (which can be a GOOD thing in a professional athlete) won't let him sit out too long. if marvin lewis is serious about taking control of his team back, he'll nip this in the bud. let him sit out. the 'hawks did the same thing with their overrated selifsh wide receiver (last name rhymes with "galloway") a few years ago and it wound up being best for the team.

here's hoping that mike brown and marvin lewis have enough sense to stand up for the team in this situation... for the sake of the franchise.

still,

Get all you can & let him go...we must move on. Marv..Less allowed the monster to grow out of contol and needs to take some responsibility for this mess. The problem is we have more concerns that will surface...we are more & more a disgrace.I blame Lewis!!

at 2/03/2008 4:26 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Get rid if him. I'm tired of reading all these articles wondering were the news is coming from. It sounds like he's not happy here and wants to be traded...grant him that wish and trade him. He's a cancer and will bring the whole team down if you don't.

at 2/03/2008 4:41 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

While I under the cap ramifications if a trade was orchestrated under Chad's current contract, is there room for an alternative under the CBA? That is, restructure the current contract and negotiate an absorable cap number. That way if the trade is made, cap space is preserved. If Chad wants his "walking papers" that bad, negotiations should be simple. If Dorsey or Ellis are the prime targets, then the Raiders are the ideal trading partners....

at 2/03/2008 4:46 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I never thought I'd feel sorry for the Bengals - congratulations, Chad and agent. You've accomplished the (seemingly) impossible.

In one fell swoop, Chad is destroying all of the goodwill he has built up over the years in Cincinnati. For years well-intentioned people have defended his antics, taken him to heart as a fresh breath of air, only to see now that he did not deserve the benefit of the doubt after all. Apparently, the cynics were right.

If his agent is giving him advice, it is phenomenally bad. If it is Chad's idea, he deserves all of the criticism he is getting. It is impossible to feel even a little bit sorry for someone who has so much and is willing to flush it down the toilet in an ego-driven tantrum.

The man agreed to a contract. No one put a gun to his head to sign it. Chad: walk the walk. Honor the obligation, the same way you expect the team to do for you, the same way the rest of us (aka the Real World) must do so. It's not like if you were injured and not out on the field, you would give back, say, fifty percent of your pay for services not rendered. Agreements are a two-way street, Chad. Deal with it. Man up.

In this reader's humble opinion: if Chad refuses to play, sit his butt until he comes to his senses and realizes that the team is more important than he is. The best way to punish a child or a Chad is to deny him what he really wants at a time of unruly behavior. Please, Bengals and other sports franchises: do not reward such bad conduct by giving Chad, his agent, and others like them what they want. Take a stand and send a message!

at 2/03/2008 5:06 PM Blogger CapCityRed said...

I actually understand some of Chad's frustration. Sure, he's not a model teammate or anything, but Chad has somehow become the funnel for the entire team's negative image. Whenever something goes wrong Chad is always the first one to be blamed and why? Because he's emotional on the sidelines? Because he celebrates after a touchdown? Is a selfish player really detrimental to a team? What's wrong with a guy wanting to put up Pro-Bowl stats every year? He's in the top-3 in receiving yards year after year. Does that not help the team? And from what I've seen Marvin Lewis hasn't exactly proven that he can manage a team and keep his players on the same page. If Chad is traded to a coach who knows how to handle his type of personality he will become an elite receiver and torch the Bengals every time they play. With Chad off the team TJ's numbers drop, Carson's numbers drop, and this offense becomes mediocre at best. Chad's not the one to blame; it's poor coaching and a poor ability to bring a team together as one. We can point fingers from the outside all we want, but it's pointing fingers from inside the locker room that started this whole mess.

at 2/03/2008 5:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's all up to the players now. If the players don't like Marvin he is gone.

My bet is Palmer will make the call on this. If he says to Mike Brown that he does not like Lewis either than Marvin is toast.

I personally would dump Marvin and keep Chad. Look at all the arrests and problems MArvin has brought. At the end of the day he is the coach and should not allow these issues to occurr.

at 2/03/2008 5:17 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

If he doesn't want to play let him sit. Then if he wants to come back put him at the bottom of the depth chart and let him pay special teams. He is the Bengals best receiver and a great player but has no right to whine - he GETS TO PLAY FOOTBALL FOR A LIVING. Let him go get a real job and see how he likes it.

You people have just lost your minds?! You really want to let Chad go? Can anyone out there please explain why last season is "Chad's fault?" Seriously. Like him or not, there's no way he "lost" those games for us. Explain that point to me and maybe I'll understand. If/when Chad goes, the Bengals will be laughing stock of the NFL - again. Is that really what you want? If you think Chad is "the" problem, you're just dumb. Be careful what you wish for...

Chad Who????

at 2/03/2008 7:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

We're really talking about $2.5 million EXTRA counting against the cap this year since if he's on the team he counts 6.3mil, if he's traded then 8.8mil. For the right package in return I could see Chad being moved this offseason. They wasted 8mil on Justin Smith last year, why not throw 2mil away to upgrade the defense and get rid of a disgruntled player?

First, 2+MM buys 2-4 reserves for special teams, or goes a long way to resigning Stacey or Landon.

Second, neither TJ or Henry would perform nearly as well without Chad on the field. So we will have a worse passing offense to go with our poor running offense.

So, let him sit this year. If he plays and phones it in, suspend him.

As for Marving and Mike, they are not THAT bad. Their recent drafts have been pretty good on paper. Pollack and Thurman were good choices at the time. Joseph and Hall have performed well. Irons was necessary b/c Perry wasn't coming back.

I do think Chad is a prick and should take his 3MM and be quiet.

Wide receiver is the 2nd easiest player to replace in the league after running back. Name 1 Eagle wide out from the 4 conference championships (TO only was there for 1). Name 1 patriots reciever prior to this year. TJ and Chris would be fine as #1 and #2 wideouts. If Chad wasn't running his routes, let him go. Great teams don't put up with this sh*t at all. Heck, the Giants just won a superbowl the season after their "superstar" retired. Screw Chad Johnson, let him sit. Don't give him up for less than a 2nd round pick, if not a 1st.
That being said, there is an obvious lack of discipline in the locker room. Time for Marvin to lay the hammer down.

Also, why does the NFL still do business with Drew Rosenhaus? His clients always seem to cause problems. It seems that the NFL should suspend his priveldges.

at 2/04/2008 12:23 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree w/ all those saying Marvin is a huge problem - but put yourself in his position. Mikey wants a coach who causes him no problems/challenges (just look at the last 5 hires).

Sooo ... Marvin tells Chad to shut up (publicly). Now, Mike has a problem (support his coach or one of his stars?).

Mike to Marvin >> "your upsetting the status quo. If you keep it up, you're fired".

Marvin understands this.
Why else would Marvless put up with Chaddy?

This is really just sad. When Chad was making touchdowns and entertaining everyone, no one that was a Bengals fan had anything negative to say. Look at all the Chad Johnson mechendise sold in Cincinnati alone. Remember the blonde mohawk??? Did it ever occur to anyone that part of Chad's game is getting people to talk about him? Last season he attempted to tone it down and keep his mouth shut, and he didn't play as well. It doesn't help that teams are double and triple covering him either. When he was confident and in the spotlight, he performed well. It is obvious that the Bengals have given him a free pass to talk to the media and get the hype up about him again in a effort to bring his game back up.
Do not compare Chad to Corey Dillon! Dillon was worse. He came right out and said he wanted traded. He even went as far to say he would rather flip burgers then play another season in Cincinnati. Chad has not said anything negative about the Bengals or Cincinnati directly. It is reported that he said no one had his back. What he is talking about no one having his back is when he started all these trading rumors and told the media that they were false. So now he is playing games and leading everyone on. Another report said Marvin has been giving Chad the silent treatment since the beginning of last season. As I recall, they were talking on the sidelines last year and even embraced after Chad caught a touchdown pass. Marvin looked genuinely happy for Chad and I don't believe it was an act. Basically this is all BS and I think it is terrible that Cincinnati fans are not supporting Johnson. How can we expect anyone to want to play for Cincinnati if every time they have a bad game, we turn our back on them? I think that is what Chad needs and wants. He needs to know he is appreciated. Not for fans to beg him to stay but to let him, and all the other Bengals players, know that we love to watch them play and we want them to play for Cincinnati. Now is not the time to turn our backs on these players. They have the potential to be a superbowl team, and maybe, with more fan support, they can be the superbowl team we all want so badly.
I don't know about any other Cincinnati fan but Chad, Carson, T.J., Chris, and all the other players, I want that trophy in Cincinnati as much as you guys and You are the team that can bring it home!

And the Bengals will continue to be a losing franchise.

That's NOT Drew Rosenhaus's fault!

You know it’s funny because as you recall it was a report by Chris Mortenson that said earlier in the year that the Bengals were trading Chad. Also, every time Chad speaks he conviently refers to this story. Now CM is reporting from an unnamed source that he will sit out. All of this is being done by Chad’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, he’s the source from the beginning to the present and poor Chad is about to ruined his likable reputation around the league. I guess the object is to turn the fan base, city, and organization against you so they will happily trade you. I have some questions for Chad, you say no one had your back but how about the time that you had a temper tantrum and allegedly hit a coach – as I recall the organization and the team defended you stating nothing happen (but in you own words there is always some truth to every story) What about all those times you were seen on sidelines in arguments with teammates wanting the ball and Marvin coming over to attempt to calm you – at this point Marvin’s constantly having to answers questions about your behavior at press conferences. Not once did he or others say anything negative about you or the situations. In fact, Marvin vowed to get rid of the locker room snitch after your tantrum. You say you never cause any off the field problems, but in my opinion you have created a mess that lingers much longer than a DUI, too bad you can’t be pulled over and made to walk a straight line!!!!

I think the Bengals should make him SUFFER! Keep him and he will probably play- but whenever he steps on the field the fans should turn their back and BOO him! This would hurt his precious ego the most.

5:50, thats the worst idea i've ever heard of....yea lets see, the team resolves the issue of him but we as the fans are not satisfied because we're stubborn so we're gonna turn our backs on him even though the important part of him staying in cincinnati has already been accomplished..how is that gonna help the franchise move on? is that gonna make the bengals a tougher squad? you guys need to stop talking about chad because right now, he's still a bengal. you're hurting the team more than you're hurting him (if thats what you're going for)...its guys like you that pretty much show why cincinnati has the worst fan base in the country....
