Team waives LB Manning

The Bengals today waived linebacker Roy Manning. Manning, from the University of Michigan, is a fourth-year NFL player in 2008. He was acquired by the Bengals off waivers from Jacksonville on Nov. 13 and played in five games, with seven special teams tackles.

The Bengals did not have to make a roster move to add another player. They are more than one but less than five under the offseason roster limit of 80. In other words, if linebacker Odell Thurman were about to be reinstated -- he has been allowed to return to workouts with the team -- the Bengals would not have had to waive Manning to put Thurman back on the roster.

Are they making room for Odell?

Somewhat of a minor deal I think, but could the implications be bigger? Mark, do you think this a move to make room for Thurman or even possibly Pollack, or is it just dumping money and a roster spot before the draft/free agency?

Also, do you see them cutting ties with a few more players including not signing some big salaries? I read where we might tag Smith again, why would use so much money on him?????

Obviously no one cares because no even knew he was on the team.

firefly118,

I agree, the logic is resigning Smith as a Franchise player is beyond me. Probably has a lot more to do with a general lacking in available DE/DL free agents.

Yeah, he's solid, plays alot of snaps and would be better if he had better talent around him. Who wouldn't?

By the way, no Chad update today? I'm sure he said something somewhere to somebody...

Didn't watch too much of the probowl but the announcers seemed to pretty much ignore him. Well done. Of course I may have missed something...

Good to see us make a cut...still a few more to come in my book. John Thornton, Rudi Johnson and Dexter Jackson are no-brainer cuts to me because they are completely replaceable and save a ton of money.

Justin Smith should not be brought back and neither should Bryan Robinson or Caleb Miller.

I say keep Deltha because he's got one more year at a reasonable price and will be in a contract year so when it comes down to it, he'll play hard.

Re: Mark's article on franchising Smith. Was there any source to this? Or are you just saying they might do it? There is no reason to do this. Justin Smith had 2 sacks last year and made $8.8 million.

Mark... Have you seen Odell as of yet at PBS? A reinstated Odell like he was in 2005 would be great but i've heard whispers that he was rather large at the moment. Any truth to that rumor, and if true is he working on getting in shape at PB

There is no way the Bengals should get rid of anyone with the last name Manning. They are all related and all win super bowls.
