More from Lewis interview

In an interview late this afternoon in his Paul Brown Stadium office, where he discussed the upcoming NFL scouting combine next week, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said:

-- The Bengals will use their franchise tag, though it would rather not. He would not say if defensive end Justin Smith, offensive lineman Stacy Andrews or safety Madieu Williams would be the recipient.

-- Smith and Andrews, as the team's own unrestricted free agents, play key roles in the two major areas of need heading into free agency and the draft, and those are the defensive and offensive lines.

-- Praised Andrews. "No question Stacy is a very important part of our football team," Lewis said. "We watch growth wherever we put him, left guard or right tackle."

-- The defense remains a base four-lineman, three-linebacker scheme, though that setup could change in the next two months depending on personnel shifts.

-- Injuries at running back make it an area where the team will investigate adding new players, though Lewis added that he is encouraged that Rudi Johnson will return as an invigorated, re-energized player after a 2007 season marred by a hamstring injury. Lewis called Johnson a "prideful young man."

-- The Bengals are hopeful to get production from oft-injured Chris Perry but were "a little bit unsure" about Kenny Irons at running back.

-- "(Pass) rushers on defense, that has to be a priority," Lewis said. "You have to be able to affect the football game by knocking the quarterback around."

-- Tight end is an area that the team might finally act on, adding an athletic pass receiving tight end and teaching him how to block as he matures physically. Still, Lewis praised the trio of tight ends who ended the season on the roster, starter Reggie Kelly and backups Daniel Coats and Nate Lawrie. "We might take a lesser physical player at this point and get a better receiver," he said.

-- The team would again, as it did in 2007, stay away from draft picks who have character issues. "You don't allow the discount (in where the player becomes available in the draft) to play a part in the decision," Lewis said.

-- The offseason strength and conditioning program is likely to start March 24.

Mark, some good stuff here from Lewis. Something needed to be said about Chad and free agency. More telling what he said about free agency than the standard fluff with Chad.

Yes, we do need to put more pressure on the passer, part of that is Geathers not being on the line for the better part of the season, but I'm stunned Lewis didn't say anything about a run-stuffer. Hopefully that's a smoke-screen, because we NEED a stud DT. Maybe it would help our DEs and LBs look better...(sarcasm, it would)

Finally, some talk about a TE. How about a player you mentioned in a print article a few weeks back, UK's Jacob Tamme? He has shown willingness to block in the games I've seen. He's a type of TE you can create mismatches, and will lessen the coverage on your WRs or how many defenders are in the box.

I get Justin or Stacy getting the franchise, how the HECK did Madieu come into that conversation? Did Lewis identify those three by name? Are those yours and/or Hobson's assumptions? I mean, Madieu should not be franchised whatsoever.

No mention at all of Landon Johnson? All the other FAs, Madieu, Justin, Stacy get mentioned, nothing about Landon? Very disconcerting...

We do NOT need to add another running back. Rudi, Perry, Irons, DeDe, Watson, Quincy Wilson, take 'em all of camp and keep the top three. Heck, Jeremi Johnson can also play RB if there's a major pinch. No need to waste a(nother) draft pick on the same spots over and over again (also LB), while spots like DT and TE never get addressed.

Regarding the character issue on draft day: let's just wait and see. Brown has proven he cannot help himself when the opportunity arises to get a steal (no pun intended) - character be damned.

Mark - is the Transition Tag still an option? Couldn't they do something like that with Williams, which would leave the franchise tag out there for Andrews (or Smith)?

I simply cannot believe the continuing idiotic personnel decisions that Marvin Lewis makes. His quotes regarding drafting tight ends and running backs severely scares me!
First of all, the NFL has proven you can almost insert any decent back at RB and be successful. Didn't the Giants and Pats prove that this year? The best running back in Giants history retires and committee of 3 unkowns (Jacobs, Ward and Bradshaw) win the super bowl? How? With a strong D, a good O-line, a QB and decent weapons.
Year after year in the Marvin era...what's our problem...NO DEFENSE! Then why do we continue to draft Running Backs on high picks? And he's mentioning that again?
We need LBs, D-line and O-line! Carson got killed last year and lost virtually all mobility...he needs protection!
Insert anyone at RB (Rudi, Watson, Perry, Irons, Dorsey, etc.) and we'll be fine. Our recievers are fine, even without Chad. Tight Ends are fine, we just never throw to them. When we constantly run 3 reciever sets, someone has to stay in to block?
Lastly, Marvin's personell decisions are horrible. He let Steinbach go and to keep Willie, who hardly played last year and is virtually finished. (No disrespect to Willie, but it's business...he's like 35, why give him a multi-year deal and let your best young Pro-Bowl Lineman go to Cleveland?) His continuation to draft RB's high (Perry, Irons) when that clearly isn't the need. His decision to keep Justin Smith, perhaps the slowest and most ineffective pass-rusher in the league. All his sacks come at the end of halfs or games and never in crucial situations. Let the guy go, put Geathers as the primary rusher, and bring in someone faster than Smith. Ed Hartwell as our big free agent last year??? What the heck did Marvin see in him? Notice he went the entire season without being picked up by ANYONE, even the Dolphins!!! What does that tell you about Marvin's choice of talent? Oh yeah, we even started a game last year with only 3 LB's on the active roster (and 1 got hurt in that game). How does that even happen?
It's time for Marvin to go. Something just doesn't click with him. He's lost control of the locker room, continues to make the worst personnel decisions, and quite frankly...can't win.

No word yet on Thurman? We heard earlier that he'd received permission from the league to begin working out with at the teams’ facilities, but has he?

First of all to Anon 9:39, talking about Carson getting killed? Let me remind you that the O-line as maligned as it was allowed the fewest sacks in franchise history. I'll agree that he was rushed and got hit, but he didn't get killed by any means. As far as running backs go, I say go to camp with what we have, I like the competition and like the different options we have there. Franchise tag wise, I think we need to put it on Stacy Andrews. We've been discussing with J.Smith long enough, if we can't get a deal done then, it's time to move on. Andrews is too important to our 0-Line.

Tight End wise, I think it's great Marvin is talking more about a pass catching tight end and looking for it. It's just another element to the already potentially explosive offense. Having 3 health, 2 great, 1 good recievers and a threat at tight end is going to open it up, ala the Patriots offense.

Everyone needs to get off of Marvin Lewis. He has done nothing but a great job. Cincinnati fans are unbelievable, no respect for the reality of a situation. All of the "haters" out there will be the biggest fans all of the sudden when the Bengals are on a roll. Quit being fair weather Cincinnati, I've grown up being a Bengals fan and defending them even through 2-14...one thing I can't defend is the ignorance level of fans and the "we're the best when we win, or worst when we lose" attitude. Either support the team or let it go. PERIOD! I'm sick of it, just like every other TRUE Bengals fan!

Finally, Marvin, I'm so happy you came out and squashed the issue with Chad. I love him, I think he's great and he expects to be great. I can understand how he feels and for the fans/media to react the way they have, makes me SICK! Everyone wants to find an excuse for last season, first it was Marvin, then it was Chad, then it was the defense...We just sucked! No way around it, no way to make it sound good. It is what it is. Chad I love you, I love your game, and I know you'll be back and better than ever!

Cincinnati Bengals, I love you...I got faith in my owner, my coach, and my team...If you don't, then move on and cheer for someone else. Why would you put yourselves through this thing we call being fans if it makes you feel so bad...

Who Dey!

lets not go too far anon 9:39...
i will agree that our top priority should be a strong D. if we dont go DT or DE with the ninth pick, it will be a mistake. i also dont think the need for a new RB is so great that we should select a RB before the sixth round. justin smith has to go btw...
HOWEVER, how can you say carson got killed last year??? we were one of the best in the league in sacks allowed, our problem came with running the ball. when willie was out there, we ran the ball pretty well. you can't say the pats and giants just plugged nobodys into RB because its not true. if im not mistaken, maroney was a first round pick and jacobs was a second round pick. those are too high of draft picks to say they are nobodys. i believe we can get a good TE in the fourth or fifth round, so no need to pick one up too early. we have to go D-line, O-line, and LB in the first 4 rounds...
oh yeah, give madeau the tag. he costs a LOT less than justin smith or stacy andrews. plus, he can play nickel-back or corner.

Nevr know with marvless but I think he said Andrews gets the Tag. IMHO, both lines need new-blood - my priority would be on offensive side to protect Carson.

"I mean, Madieu should not be franchised whatsoever."

If someone is going to get franchised it should be him. The franchise tag for a safety is much less than what it would be for Stacey Andrews or Justin Smith.

Using the franchise tag on either Andrews or Smith would likely take away any chance to sign a big free agent.

It's silly and uninformed to say things like "Carson got killed last year." The truth is, Carson got sacked only 17 times, one of the lowest numbers in the entire league. By comparison, Jon Kitna got sacked 51 times. Fifty-one! Ben Roethlisberger, 47. Donovan McNabb, 44.

That said, I agree there was a problem with the offensive line. The problem started with letting Eric Steinbach go. He is probably the best pulling guard in the league, and that role is key to the Bengals' bread-and-butter play, the power lead.

Whitworth is a fine player but he does not have the footwork Steinbach has. Whitworth is a tackle doing an admirable job of imitating a guard.

Injuries added to the problem, which can be summed up as a lack of consistency. People moving around, playing different positions... kills an offensive line. You want to run the ball in the NFL, your line has to be a crisp, well-oiled machine.

The other problem there is Eric Ghiaciuc. I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft another center, or look for one in free agency.

As far as the d-line, Lewis said a mouthful when he said "rushers on defense, that has to be a priority... You have to be able to affect the football game by knocking the quarterback around."

Absolutely, coach. Can I assume this means you will be personally delivering lovely parting gifts to Justin Smith's locker? He's durable, I'll give him that. But 43.5 sacks in seven total seasons is certainly not $8-million-a-year caliber production. Let me help you out with the math, coach, let's see... six sacks a year, eight million a year, that works out to, umm, WAY TOO MUCH FREAKING MONEY.

"hopeful to get production from oft-injured Chris Perry but were "a little bit unsure" about Kenny Irons at running back."

This is a bit unsettling, although he's coming off an injury, this was a second round draft pick. You're supposed to get production from a second round draft pick, especially when you refuse to add any free agents. When you're building strictly through the draft, you should expect production from your second round draft pick.

If he actually follows through with all of what he just said. I think we will have us a good coach!

I would really like to see Kenny Irons and Chris Perry back. Other than the line that is a key component to an explosive offense.

Is it me or did 9:39 just post several paragraphs of dumb?!?!?!

Carson got killed?

We shouldn't even think to tag Williams?

Steinbach was a probowler?

TE scare you?

You say that our recieving core will be fine without chad and no recieving TE's?
We will then have TJ and Henry, and nobody else that is even semi-proven. ( Tab- injured every other week, Holt- seen better hands and has a fumbling problem, Chatman- if you think he is worth anything more than punt returns you are just hopeless, Kelly- No hands and no YAC, and Coats- has proven what, to give you so much confidence?)

I think it is best that ANON 9:39 stop watching games... it is too hard on him.

9:39, I don't know when, but Soccer is also on TV (and its easier to understand).

I didn't think with Marvin White and especially Ndukwe showing so much promise last year, so many people on this board would want to re-sign Madieu.

For those that say franchising J. Smith or Stacy would prevent us from signing a big name FA, (and that's why we should tag Madieu) consider this:

We're having plenty trouble signing our own FAs, guys we've had MONTHS to deal with. Whether it's Madieu, Justin, Stacy, Landon, Larson, not sure if we're trying to re-sign all, but we're not getting any deals done.

So even if we don't use the franchise at all on anyone, or even on Madieu, I wouldn't expect a big name FA...if we can't get our guys signed, the Bengals won't win in a contract war with a FA that isn't under contract and has other teams knocking down his door.

Let Justin Smith go!

Way too much time and effort in Andrews to let him walk...Smith thanks for the memories(or lack of),and maybe if the TE was more of the game plan, they might actually look decent..If our D would get off the field on 3rd downs, our offense might be able to run 10-15 more plays a game, with some plays focused on the TE...I think Coates has nice upside....

This is Anon 9:39 again...

First of all, it's funny how I make a bunch of solid points and a couple people ignore those and latch on to 1 comment (regarding Carson getting killed).

Second of all, just because Carson didn't get sacked a lot, doesn't mean he didn't get killed. In case you bafoons weren't watching any freakin' games...our offense wasn't nearly as "potent" last year as it was the 2-3 years prior. Reason being? The line couldn't hold anyone and as a result Carson's timing was severly off, causing him to throw it away or timing issues with the WR's which weren't there in the previous years...hence the frustration of Chad and TJ! Carson's too good of a QB to get sacked that much, he throws it away...but point being, he was rushed way too much all season. And you can't make comments like "well when Willie was in there, we ran the ball well". Yeah, no kidding, but he's never in there, that's the point. Neither was Levi (or when he is, he stinks!). Whitworth is pretty good, but doesn't have the footwork of Steinbach. But I definately agree that Stacey Andrews needs to be the franchise tag!
Oranged00D...you are right on the money! Well put.
For Anon 11:47...are you sure you're not the soccer fan!
See above for explanation of Carson getting killed. Never mentioned the tag issue at all (although it should got to Andrews), Steinbach was a Pro-Bowl Alternate while with the Bengals (where were you...). Drafting a TE high (above DL, DE, LB and O-Line scares me). A stud TE will not fix our Defense and be the missing peice to a Super Bowl...Do you have any idea on how to build a freaking team! Look at the Giants...I believe their D was awesome and there weapons on O were pretty good (not as good as ours though) and they won with Shockey (that high pick TE) on the bench! Oh yeah, Tyree the WR that virtually won the game...he wasn't the next Chad Johnson...but where did he come from? Oh yeah, the 6th round...kinda like our stud TJ (7th). Which just proves WR's and RB's are a dime a dozen. (Of course there are expections like A-Pet, LT, etc.)
So maybe you're right...keep Chad, keep Marvin, never build a D, keep drafting RB's, continue to have no respect/control in the locker room (verballed by Carson), don't hold anyone accountable...just pat them on the back, and continue with 8-8, 7-9 seasons...that's the goal!

I'm a die-hard fan...and the goal I want to see is winning! I'm thankful for being better than 2-14, but I don't Marvin is exactly getting the job done...and some of the reasons are within his control.

I think Anon 9:39 is right about Carson.

"Throughout much of the Bengals now-completed 7-9 season,Palmer looked tired and worn out.

This morning we found out why.

"Oh, yeah. I think the amount of sleep I lost this year. I think I've aged. I'm 28 going on 34. I got beat up this year. I think I lost a couple years," he said.
