Bengals sign WR Gabriel

The Bengals today signed free agent wide receiver Doug Gabriel to a one-year contract.

Gabriel (6-2, 215; Central Florida) is a fifth-year NFL player in 2008. He has played in 57 games with 12 starts and has 101 career receptions for 1,550 yards and eight touchdowns. He also has 86 career kickoff returns for a 21.5-yard avg., with one touchdown.

He was a fifth-round draft choice of Oakland in 2003 and played for the Raiders through 2005. He was traded to New England just before the start of the 2006 season and played for the Patriots before being re-acquired by Oakland on waivers in December of that year.

He was released by the Raiders on Aug. 27, 2007 and was not with an NFL team during the 2007 season.

Let me get this right. Gabriel was with the Raiders. The Raiders are one of the worst teams in the NFL. They released him in Aug of last year. Gabriel was not picked up by another team. He sits out the 2007 season. So, he can't make one of the worst teams in the NFL. No one else wanted him. Now our beloved Bengals sign him. Just great!!! Mike and Marvin, another masterful personnel move!!!

Wow I missed the part where they named Gabriel the starting QB. I mean calm down, I hope the Bengals sign 90 KR/PR and one of them turn out to be decent. This move should affect you none what-so-ever.

You have to remember that the Raiders were great at rushing the football the last couple of years but were truly terrible in the passing game. Any receiver that was with them had terrible #'s (Randy Moss, Porter, etc...) so I wouldn't worry about how well he did with them. With Carson as his QB he could have a breakout year with us. I'm more worried about our defense than the offense. Our defensive line couldn't stop my grandma in a wheelchair...

Lighten up. This is simply a move to get enough warm bodies around to get through off season practices. This guy is not seen as a viable player for a lot of minutes next year. But you never know.

Wow, mentalmidget.
I couldnt have said it better myself (your name that is)! It is just a small signing of a reciever that can be a good practice contribution, maybe even show some return talent and catch a few small balls on offense. It isnt hurting us. Why complain? We are most likely looking at a better receiver with our compensitory pick in the 3rd round anyways. I tell you what. Lets just do things your way. We should just sign probowlers from here on out. Totally, i cant believe out of the huge crop of affordable probowl calliber recievers this late in the offseason with just recently releasing one of our better recievers because of trouble with the law we picked up gabriel for such a huge contract. Hah! Jeez dude, its a cheap reciever. Masterful understanding of the friggen NFL!!! I do however think that drshatterhand1 has the right idea though (even though i didnt exactly lighten up on mentaldwarf [i think he is a good mix between dopey and grumpy).

Carson Palmer is going to be MVP (just sayin)

I stand by my point. Not ONE team in the NFL wanted Gabriel on their roster AT ANY POINT of the season last year!! Now, I hope he comes in hungry, performs above and beyond and shows 31 other teams what a mistake they made!!
Mike in littlevillage(?), I don't quite remember posting how the Bengals should do it MY WAY and just sign pro-bowlers from here on out! There's one thing worse than putting words in someone's mouth; a sarcastic mind-reader!! I've been a Bengals fan since 1972. I haven't missed a game since 1973. I think I have somewhat of an understanding of the "frigging NFL"! Then again, I'm sure you were still breastfeeding in 1972 if you were even around then!! Wait.....no! By calling posters names (mentaldwarf? a mix between dopey and grumpy?), you must be 5 years old!! Hey little boy, go ahead and post as anonymous (hiding behind mommy's skirt?)and keep calling people names. I think that's what 5 year olds do. Carson Palmer is going to be the MVP? I hope your right! Then, you can live your little life as a soothsayer AND sarcastic mind-reader!

Actually i am pretty sure i have my real name down at the bottom (you know i hide behind the whole anonymous thing -did you notice that you even said it) I will totally agree with you about the fact that you did not post anywhere that you wanted things your way or anything about probowlers, i will say you got me there. However, we know how all of you cynical geezers think. You get upset with every single mediocre move the bengals make then rip on mike brown and marvin for all of there "masterful personnel moves" (talk about sarcastic)! Oh, and the best part, the "prove your knowledge by the amount of years you have been watching a team and/or have had season tickets" that is one of my favorites. Thats actually a knee slapper. Listen, i work with many people that can tell you about football in the 70's and trust me i have heard some GREAT stories about it. However, the game has gotten a bit more complicated (there wasnt even free agency until 89). Age proves nothing, in some cases it just says you have just been dumber for a longer period of time (i am not saying you are). Listen, i am sorry for the name calling and i dont think that you are an actual mental midget or geezer (unless you want to be). I say that it was just a move that could possibly turn out to be somewhat beneficial. At the time the Raiders released him i think Aaron Brooks was the QB and the line was, and still is one of the worst in the game. Recievers cant do much with balls that arent thrown to them. Anyways, sorry, lets just agree to disagree and if i see you at a game ill buy you a beer. I personally think there is so much talent in the draft at all of the right spots this year so for all we know Gabriel could be released and we wouldnt even notice.

Carson Palmer will be MVP (just sayin)

Call me another person who is confused about the hate for the signing of Gabriel. He is simply taking up a free roster spot for the summer. This is probably due to someone at the Bengals having a connection to him, and giving him a last chance, that actually costs the Bengals very little. For some reason all teams in all pro leagues seem to hate having vacant roster spots, so when they get them they fill them, so it is not like the Bengals are doing something out of the norm(the day before the Gabriel signing Seattle signed a Saftey, Omare Lowe, that had not played since 2006, just like Gabriel. I did not have to look hard to find it, I just clicked on transactions for the NFL, and boom there is was a competent team doing the same thing the Bengals did, the day before the Bengals).

Heck he could be here only until the draft, you never know. If there is an undrafted player the Bengals like better than Gabriel, then something tells me that Gabriel will be gone so the Bengals can sign that player.

So why anyone who claims to be knowledgeable about football would get so upset over the Bengals signing Gabriel is beyond me. Plus really does anyone else find it ironic that someone who chooses to use the nickname "mentalmidget", then gets upset when someone ribs him or disagrees with his comments?

You have to look at this signing for what it is and we don't even know the contract terms yet. It's likely a one year deal for the league minimum. We're just creating competition at the WR spots and hoping we can improve the position as much as possible. With Antonio Chatman the current #3, it's hard to disagree with. There are no WRs on the current free agent market and we are likely to draft a couple but assuming you draft 2 WRs, the WR corp would be:

TJ
Chad (maybe)
Chatman
Holt
Marcus Maxwell (who?)
2 rookies

You might as well throw this other guy into the mix and see how he matches up. He's not going to get any significant guaranteed money so there's not much of a risk. Plus he returns kicks.

Mike from BENGLadesh,
I accept your apology and, by the way, I owe you one. After re-reading my retort, I could see how I came across like an old geezer. I did get a little carried away. The dopey, grumpy thing lit me up for no reason. I CAN take a joke and a little ribbing and I should have that time, also. I guess I had some sort of "mental" moment. If you've seen any of my other posts I can be quite self-depreciating. I'm also rarely, rarely negative with the Bengals, at least in the last 5 years.
Look, I know what the Bengals are doing. They are thin at WR right now. I also remember what Doug Gabriel did to the Bengals a few years back when he was with the Patriots. I said what I said to create some sort of discussion with the Bengals. We love football and our Bengals or we wouldn't be here on the Bengals blog for almost 12 months a year. The draft? I'm looking forward to what our beloved Bengals are going to do with 10 draft picks. I'd like to see them draft a BIG WR in the 3rd or 4th round. By big, I mean tall and in the 210-220 lb range. I really, really like Jordy Nelson from Kansas State. 6' 4" 217 lbs, runs a 4.51 40. A super clean kid. He's projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round. If you'll excuse me, I have some "humble pie" to eat.

My 4:28 comment I removed was a dupe from 4:25. I didn't know it post as "author deleted comment" .
