Dungy: Utecht will be good

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Colts head coach Tony Dungy had nothing but good things to say about his former backup tight end, Ben Utecht, now with the Bengals.

"He’s going to be a really, really good player for Cincinnati," Dungy said this afternoon as the NFL annual meeting ended. "He’s an extremely smart guy. He can catch the ball, he runs routes. He had to be the blocking tight end for us, so that part of his game really improved over three years because he was thrust into it. He’s a leader. He’s a hard worker. We hated to lose him. I’m sure he’s going to help them.

"He’s looking forward to playing with Carson (Palmer) and probably get in the same type of deal that Dallas (Clark) had, where you had two great outside receivers and he’s going to be the guy that works the middle of the field. I know he’s really looking forward to it.

"I don’t know if they've ever had (a stretch-the-field tight end), maybe since (Rodney) Holman and Dan Ross. Those guys that get down the middle and make big plays as a tight end. He can do that. He can run and he s a big target. He can run and he can run after the catch. He’s going to help them offensively."

Did you expect him to say anything bad? Of course not, they never do.

He didn't have to say ANYTHING. And from what I know about Dungy, he isn't going to lie. He certainly didn't have to go on and on about the guy the way he did...

This is a good insurance move by the Bengals.

If Chad is a no show, this frees TJ up from running a lot of the middle routes that he had to.

Yeah, but what he said was true. Holman was the last great one, maybe Tony McGee. If Utecht can do as well as McGee, with the receivers we have, that should leave absolutely no excuses for the running backs.

No matter what you say geez, if Dungy says something about a very good player then I believe him. Look at his success with a pass catching TE. This is what we have needed for so long now. We need him for the threat in the Redzone and to help better in the running game and play action pass. Look at his stats for the amount of plays he has played. Indy had too many TEs and plus they had no money to keep him. They are CAP strapped. He may and may not work out, it is all up to Brat to get him involved into the O scheme. Will he is the question.

He could have just said nothing if he didn't have anything good to say. I think the fact he made an effort to say something positive makes it a legitimate comment.

Tony Dungy is a class guy, and one of the smartest guys in the NFL, if not the smartest. He is not obligated to say anything, nor say as much, but he did.

That tells me a lot about Ben, and I am excited to hear it. There are 5 guys in the NFL, that when they speak, I listen to every word: Parcells, Holmgren, Shanahan, Belicheat (I don't like him), and Dungy. These guys are the smartest guys in football, and know more about ALL ASPECTS OF THE GAME, than anyone. If one of them speaks this highly of a guy, he is worth it........

Do you get the feeling Dungy lobbied for him to stay and mgmt. said he cost too much with Clark there? Yay for cap casualties - not overpaying for a backup cost us Kaesviharn and Simmons, so it's nice to see karma (and our 10 draft picks) evens everything out.

This just in - Henry is going to be arrested for punching a man in the face and throwing a beer bottle through his passenger's side window. Why he continues to drink is beyond me, but I'll bet we cut him after this stunt - a moot point, since Goodell will send him to PacMan Land for a year. If Ellis and Dorsey are gone, let's figure we're looking at pulling another WR and our return man from Cal.

we cannot get a break reddlegg in colorado may be right we must be cursed with knuckle heads cut henry. chad says he will play next year i bet he is loving this or maybe chad knows things the public doesnt i listened to his latest comments maybe marvin has lost controll and chad wants other players to be as hard working as he is. he goes about it the wrong way but there is more to this stuff than we realize. we are in a tough spot as far as recievers goes chad has to play for us or it be tj and utecht. we can not take a runing back, or dlineman know we have to take a wide reciever this sucks. henry must have a pea for a brain the bengals should have babysitters for some of these guys my lab has more sense. carson has to feel like what else can happen he has amazing character it is time he took control of the team like payton manning and brady does.maybe it is time for some goodluck. have fun in prison chris henry your life could have been great.
