Lewis on Chad, running game

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, holding court at the annual AFC Coaches' Breakfast during the NFL annual meeting, said this morning that the Bengals are committed to running the ball offensively in 2008 and does not "know what (Chad Johnson) is going to do.

Johnson, the team's disgruntled, five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, has made a series of comments -- most of them negative about the Bengals -- over the past three months. He has threatened to sit out, though he remains under contract through 2011 with Cincinnati.

"It's unfortunate that Chad has put himself in that situation because a lot of people who really had affection for him now see him in a different light," Lewis said. "Hopefully some of the things he said, he's going to have to face one way or another. If he shows and does things, and does (them) the right way, I'm willing to take the bullets for him again and allow him to come back the right way."

The Bengals will not trade Johnson, Lewis said again.

"We are prepared to move on," Lewis said when asked if Johnson decides to sit out. He is not required to be in Cincinnati until the mandatory full-squad minicamp in the middle of June.

Lewis said he has told his staff that the offense will run the ball like it did in 2003 and 2004 and will be "more physical" on offense. "There are a lot of times you need to run the football to finish the game, and we didn't."

On the injury front, the Bengals are optimistic that tailback Chris Perry might be on the field come May and June, but Lewis said that Perry – who has missed most of three of his first four NFL seasons because of injury, including all of 2007 because of a serious ankle injury – remains under the supervision of the Bengals’ athletic training (medical) staff.

The team is not counting on tailback Kenny Irons, who missed all of his rookie season after sustaining a knee ligament injury in the preseason.

And linebacker Odell Thurman, who has been serving a two-year league suspension, might know by mid-April whether he will be re-instated, Bengals president Mike Brown said Monday night.
Still, Lewis said this morning, “We’re not counting on Odell."

In terms of rules changes the league's owners will vote on today and Wednesday, Lewis said he favors keeping the playoff seeding the way it is, to reward a division-winning team with a home game. "I would hate to see us go away from that model," he said.

He favors the rule to eliminate the "force-out" call on a receiver and the in-helmet communicator for a defensive player.

Why won't the Bengals be counting on Kenny Irons this upcoming season? Was his knee injury career ending?

I'm confused. The team is going to run the ball more but isn't counting on Kenny Irons. Are they counting on Rudi to be productive?

And they haven't upgraded the line backing corps and aren't counting on Thurman. Who replaces Chad if he decides not to play? I liked the Utecht signing but from what I've seen so far 7 wins would be a good season in 2008.

We won without Corey Dillon when he went through this, and we will win without Chad J. Protect Carson and I dont care who you put out there, he will get the ball to them...

I've torn both the ACL and meniscus ligaments in my knee at once. It's one thing for a QB to come back and drop straight back it's entirely another for a running back to come back and do all he has to do to be successful, and to take the hits he takes.

It's not career-ending but he's probably not gonna be 100% until spring 2009.

With the money they can save by cutting Rudi, I would not be surprised to see them draft a running back in the 2nd round.

And I'll bet you some bubble gum no one has been talking about the running game this offseason more than Carson Palmer. It'll make his job so much easier.

Ben-I agree with everything you say.

Jausterman-The bengals won when CD was on the team,Last time I checked They were 8-8 & 8-8 his last two seasons.
(03' & 04')

I winning season in 18 years. No big signings at LB,this team needs to learn how to stop the run too.

I'm not trying to be negative, but I don't expect much out of the 08' season. 7-9 or 8-8 at best.I would like to be proven wrong, though.I just don't see the any major upgrade's,We have alot of draft picks, maybe there they can plug holes, but don't hold your breath

Utecht is a good signing, but not enough to take this franchise to the next level.Odom had to be signed,he just replaces JS.Besides the 2 back up LB's from AZ,what else have they done to make this team better.I don't see much effort of trying to put together a winning team.

That's ok with Mikey Brown,he still get's paid & the fairweathers keep drinking his overpriced kool-aid.

"Business as usual."

I don't think the Bengals will be better with CJ if he maintains his attitude. I won't be suprised to see him hold out, either. Right now, he's a cancer. Theres no way the Bengals are going to trade him with the hit they're going to take on the salary cap.
I heard David Fulcher on McAllister's radio show last week and he hit the nail on the head with CJ and TJ. He said CJ is under contract and by CJ refusing to show up for volunteer workouts shows his lack of respect for his team. A $250,000 bonus for attending the workouts? A lack of respect for $250,000! If he doesn't respect $250,000, then chances are he doesn't respect himself, either. Apparently, CJ has forgot where he came from. The same applies for TJ. He's just not running his mouth. It's hard to believe TJ doesn't get a workout bonus! I'm sure he does. His excuse for staying in California is just that,,,,an excuse. He is also disrespecting his team! If he wants more one on one with his training, then he should bring his trainer. This is the time start working on the 2008 season and the Bengals starting WR's ARE NOT HERE! They have no regard for the Cincinnati Bengals- their teammates! They should automatically drop all the way down the depth chart!!
The running game? Some of the fault HAS to lay with Bratkowski. He got to be so predicable last year. I don't remember with game, but the analysist was calling the plays before the ball was snapped! Yes, the offense has to execute, but the play-calling got to be too predictable. Speaking of plays, all offensive players love an occasional "trick play". Does Brat have such an imagination? Even Paul Brown had an occasional trick play!

What is the salary cap hit if he gets traded after June 1? Is it spread across 2008 and 2009?
