Police cite WR Henry for expired plates

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- This bit on The Enquirer's Web site this morning from my colleague Jennifer Baker:

In his latest brush with the law, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry was cited earlier this month for driving a vehicle with an expired license plate.

Henry, 24, of Florence paid a $149 fine on March 26, Hamilton County court records show. Cincinnati police pulled his red, 2007 Land Rover over March 16 in the 2100 block of Vine Street in University Heights, his ticket shows.

The National Football League suspended Henry for most of last season (the first eight games) due to violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, including a January 2007 conviction involving alcohol and minors in a Covington hotel room in the spring of 2006.

He was sentenced to 90 days in jail with all but two of the days suspended. He was warned that future misconduct could result in the end of his NFL career.

Although it is public info, is this what the media is reduced to? Just waiting for something like this to report on, shows my lack of respect for media types. I have been stopped for expired tags, just an oversight that tens of thousands of Americans make every year.

I guess, if this is the most exciting negative to report on in the offseason, we are doing o.k!

I agree with firefly, this is not newsworthy. He paid the fine, end of (non) story.

I agree and I disagree with firefly.

One one hand, this is one of the most minute things that can happen to a person when being pulled over. An expired tag? That's far less of a deal than UC's Byrd smoking weed, even though the fine is apparently bigger. Not newsworthy at all, much less on a major American city's daily newspaper site. Something more important has to be happening in the city.

On the other hand, how dumb of a dummy does Chris Henry have to be? If the NFL had told me that I could no longer run, jump, catch passes from a future hall of famer, celebrate TD's with another disgruntled future hall of famer, be on tv, travel the country free of charge (in fact get paid quite nicely), get hit on by cheeerleaders, and have 6 months off every year if I screwed up again, I wouldn't even walk out of the house without making sure my shoestrings were double-knotted for fear of them coming untied. God forbid I trip on an untied shoelace, stumble into the street and get hit for jaywalking. Honestly, how dumb is dumb? Chris, you're rich. HIRE SOMEONE TO MAKE SURE THESE THINGS DONT HAPPEN TO YOU ANYMORE.

And by the way, who the heck is his agent?! Isn't that what they're paid to do, make sure their meal tickets don't get thrown out of the NFL for driving on expired tags? Again Chris, you're rich. HIRE SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PERSONAL AFFAIRS.

I think Da Phoenixx has it right. See, one time with a stupid mistake I can live with, but this is part of a PATTERN of stupid stuff. Last year, it was the Rental Car fee he didn't know he was responsible for paying. People said that was ticky tacky too, and it was.... all by itself. But it was "Just another brick in the wall" so to speak. One thing is for certain, Chris Henry will never be a MENSA member.

He's always a BIG IF.I've said it before & I'll say it again.IF CH can stay out of trouble he has the potential to be great.Boneheaded moves like this are small in comparison, but still reflects his judgement on simple matters.

Meaning;Use your head you bonehead,You live in Cincinnati, your black & you drive nice ride, & the cops are known for messing with black folks in nice cars.Any wrong move in that town, your back in jail & a football career down the tubes too!

CSA, and Mike, the answer is Chris Henry should. Reddleg in Colorado put it pretty well. I'll go one step further, he needs to be doing it better than the next guy! I agree, its a no big deal screw up, but he isn't in a position to afford that luxury, and that is by his own actions.

Chris needs to realize that the NFL police will always be watching him. I know what he did was wrong in the past, however time served is just that. No player has ever been suspended for expired tags and it won't happen this time. The Bengals will be a lot better off with Henry able to start game one and on. My issue is with the NFL and how they pass out their suspensions. Odell Thurman received a massive penalty for his conduct missing the last 2 seasons. But when I heard the news the other day that Pac Man Jones has been entertaining trade offers and plans to be reinstated this summer I was floored... This guy was supposed to be out for a long while and because he remains in the media spotlight he's going to get some lesser sentence??? Another quick thought... Jared Allen got caught for DUI last summer and only served a 2 game suspension. This leads me to my conclusion:

Yes there are a bunch of young players who have a huge sum of money thrust upon them and are expected to make all the right decisions. Well that ain't gonna happen. These are college kids some as young as 19 with millions at their disposal. Let's not forget that they may not have the best upbringing or common sense that should needs to go with a great deal of money. I am not excusing the actions, just understanding that 18-24 year old men do not make the greatest decisions all the time. I am not refering to gun charges.

What I feel needs to be done is a set penalty system. 1st offense 2nd offense and so on. No more of this Jared Allen gets 2 games and others get full seasons crap. Roger Goodell is not a judge and he shouldn't be able to have ultimate power. If you haven't noticed I'm just a bit angry over the NFl's handling of Thurman's case. Finally Chris still needs to grow up a bit more as do a lot of league players. Maybe classes should be required for any non-senior players entering the draft. Or ultimately they should offer NFL, NBA, MLB etc as majors in college and require these athletes to possess at least an associates degree in their field of choice to better prepare them with life skills and proper knowledge that is needed for what they are about to endure. Just a thought, sorry for the length.

Go Bengals!!!

I can't believe how screwed up our government is and how they place people like henry on a pedestal where he can't be touched and all he gets is slapped on the wrist. If this happened to a "normal" person, they would be in the cell, lose their license for at least a year, and have to pay many penalties. It cost the "normal" person a fortune, but we all know money can buy you out of many things, and henry has proven this. WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLE ARE YOU ALLOWING THIS NO GOOD PERSON TO SHOW OUR KIDS THAT ARE GROWING UP???? He doesn't have the right to be a player, because he can't control his addictions and thinks he is above the law, which he has proven this to be true. Wake up and treat him like you would the rest of the people that aren't ballplayers.

It was an expired tag?!!!

Which reminds me... i think i need to get my tags soon, seriously. Thanks Mark (actually i should say chris)

Having said that! What the H E double hockey sticks. Its a friggen minor traffic violation. I got a speeding ticket a year ago (i thought i should share that with everbody since these things are apparently news worthy). If he is caught beating women, waiving guns, makin it rain, or selling blow to 15 year olds then we have a story (seriously 16 or older, i dont want to hear about it) but just leave that go.

by the way you phrased the story it sounded like you were looking for something he did. Is this true mark? (not bashing just curious)

guess maybe the expired tag thing might have been part of a PATTERN, ya think???
