... is another man's treasure

INDIANAPOLIS -- Word around the NFL scouting combine this morning is that Bengals defensive end Justin Smith, now free of the binding franchise tag, will be a popular player on the market when free agency opens Feb. 29. One suitor might be Smith's home-state St. Louis Rams, who are in need of a defensive end.

Tampa Bay is said to be interested in Smith, as well.

It's not as if he was exactly classified as garbage while he was in Cincinnati. We did slap the franchise tag on him last year and apparently thought he was worth the average of the top 5 at DE.

He was just a 2.5-sack a year luxury that we can't afford. He'll be the same for the Rams.

Garbage is still garbage.

I never thought they should've used the franchise tag on him last year. They should've let him go. When they found out he wasn't going be a big-time pass rusher, they should've tried switching him to a tackle. He's a good player, just not a great one.

I am going to assume that it is only going to be me but personally i would like to have smith back. if he asks for to much money then let him go but i wouldnt drop him yet. i have seen better pass rushers in my life (trust me), but i still think he has a good run stopping cabability and can be worth more than 2.5 sacks a year if we fix our tackle problem.

I say keep smith (big for a 3-4) and draft a better tackle. with help all of our players will be better.

Smith had a motor. Not much else. In terms of him being a run-stopper, his tackle numbers were always misleading. Much like Landon Johnson, a majority of Smith's tackles were 5+ yards down the field. This signifies hustle and determination, but not overall effectiveness.

270 pounds is actually on the small side for a 3-4 end.

The thing about J. smith is this: he's not the type of player you build around. He's the type of player you fill in around star players. Very consistent, always plays, but pricey. We just need stars...NOW.

Smith had a motor for sucking. We played the franchise tag perfectly on him. He has a motor with one move the bull rush. That is why he only had 2.5 sacks in 2007. Let the bum go.

Zach said "a majority of Smith's tackles were 5+ yards down the field."

Actually, an analysis of all of Justin's tackles from the 2006 season proved that nearly 70% of his tackles were within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage.

But too many Bengal fans let their emotions blind them to reality.

Just say you don't like Justin or you want a DE who is a sack specialist. It's OK.

But this nonsense about Justin's tackles all being 5 yards downfield is false.

Sacks are dependent upon many factors. JS only had 2 sacks....how many sacks would you expect with virtually no linebacking core and a young secondary?

How many of the stud pash rushing DE's have played almost every snap in every game over the last 6 years?

Should they break the bank on him? No. Should they make an effort to keep him? YES!
