T.J. to Pro Bowl

From seventh-round draft pick as the 204th player drafted in 2001 to bubble player at training camp in 2002 and 2003, T.J. Houshmandzadeh's journey as an NFL player reached a peak this afternoon when he was named to the AFC all-star team for the Pro Bowl.

The game will be played Feb. 10 in Honolulu.

AFC and NFC rosters: http://www.nfl.com/probowl/story;jsessionid=36C2AEEA2C7A23855CFD53DDD0C75ED0?id=09000d5d8053b226&template=without-video&confirm=true

The Pro Bowl nod is the first Houshmandzadeh, who was a third alternate in last year’s voting.

Houshmandzadeh and Cleveland's Braylon Edwards are the backup AFC wide receivers, behind starters Reggie Wayne of Indianapolis and Randy Moss of New England.

In 2007, he leads the NFL with a Bengals-record 101 receptions through 14 games, and he has gained 1,028 yards with 11 touchdowns. On Saturday night in the loss at San Francisco, Houshmandzadeh set the franchise's single-season receptions record with 101, besting Carl Pickens' mark of 100 from 1996.

Houshmandzadeh played college ball at Oregon State, with fellow Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson.

"T.J. has worked very hard to earn this honor," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement released by the club. "He has worked through some injuries during the course of the season, and he has been a very consistent performer and producer for us for the last three years."

Houshmandzadeh becomes the seventh Bengals wide receiver to make the Pro Bowl. The other six have been Isaac Curtis (four times), Chad Johnson (four), Cris Collinsworth (three), Carl Pickens (two), Eddie Brown (one) and Chip Myers (one). Additionally, tight end-wide receiver Bob Trumpy was selected to two AFL All-Star games and two Pro Bowls.

Houshmandzadeh scored at least one touchdown in each of the season’s first eight games. He became the first Bengal to find the end zone in each of the first eight games of a season, and his streak of eight is the franchise’s longest at any point within one season.

Houshmandzadeh’s season-opening streak of eight straight games with a score tied for second-longest in NFL history at the start of a schedule.

The team’s total of Pro Bowl players could grow. Four Bengals earned alternate status for the AFC team: wide receiver Chad Johnson and kicker Shayne Graham as first alternates, and left tackle Levi Jones and quarterback Carson Palmer as third alternates. Alternates take roster spots if players in front of them are injured or opt out of the game.

Pro Bowl spots are determined based on voting by players, coaches and fans,. Each group's votes count one-third.

well, since this is a "me-first" team, i'm sure TJ is pretty proud of himself.

If there is one guy deserving in this pile of crap season it is TJ.
Kudos to him. I wish that we had more guys like him on the field.

Congrats to T.J., however if the rumors are true that both T.J. and Chad have been causing problems in the locker room and yelling at Carson all the time, then I have to agree with the first poster.

I can't wait to hear or see Chad cry like a baby, or even not give his full effort in the remaining games, because he didn't make the Pro Bowl. You know we can expect to hear some complaining from this selfish SOB as he loves the camera and the spotlight. I hope Chad is traded after this season...he is turning into Cincinnati's T.O., a cancer to the team.

I agree 4:22. During Saturday's game, Deion and Marshall were saying T.J. would be ticked if he didn't get picked for the Pro Bowl. Uh, hey T.J., how about being ticked at an underachieving season? Who cares about his numbers? The only number that matters is 5-9, and 16 out of 17 non-playoff seasons. Digest that, T.J.

To T.J., the season is no doubt a success now. He got the individual attention he so greatly wanted. Team success and chemistry be damned.

Great for TJ...but going a few posts back...MARVIN IS A JOKE.

I am a Cincy native but now live in Chicago. One thing I give Lovie credit for is coming in and saying "We are going to beat the Packers." Well, guess what...They beat the Packers. This year included.

So if you don't take the Steelers as more than another game and the Browns are no reason for Revenge, then why bother to have a division?

Isn't one of the best ways to win a division to win those six games?

But Marvin is SOOOO smart and we are so dumb.

Well, Marvin...maybe in the hills of Morgantown they will fall for your garbage. You will fit in perfect at WVU given Chris Henry and Pacman Jones are products of that environment. I hope the whispers that have you going there are right. 50 miles from your hometown, so makes sense to me..."going home" can be your out.

I get the sense the folks back home have had enough. Plenty of help packing your stuff.

Best thing season ticket holders could do is boycott Sundays game.

NO CHAD ON THE PRO BOWL TEAM, how did that happen. He is having a career year with 11 games with no td catches.

"I wish that we had more guys like him on the field."

I wish TJ would stop complaining to the refs after every play.

Well that pro bowl award and a dime should get the Bungles into the playoffs right? Worse franchise in the NFL, thanks Mikey Boy.

I don't see any TRUE Bengals fans here! Stop talking smack about TJ who has had a great season and Chad..who is still one of the most talented receivers in the league. He has kept his mouth shut, do you think he feels good about his season..support your team and your city!

TJ's attitude is no different than his dumb ass looser owner. All about himself and the money! I am a life long Bengals fan. I grew up in Cincy and have been living in San Diego for the past 12 years. This year finally did it for me. I am so sick of being disappointed by this team. I pay for the NFL Sunday ticket just to watch them. I'M DONE!!! THANKS MIKE FOR FINALLY FORCING THE ISSUE. YOU RUINED IT FOR ME!!! YOU SUCK!!!! I suffered through the 90's of you crap, NO MORE!! You have received my last dime. It looks like I will break down and start cheering on the Chargers. They attempt to put a winning team on the field and make the playoff.

TJ's a lone bright spot in an otherwise most horrific season. Chad - terrible. Carson - terrible. Rudi - terrible. Defense - terrible. Special Teams - terrible. Coaching - terrible. Time for change in 08.

I wish I could be happy for TJ, but for all the reasons that have been stated, why should I be? Up until this year, because of all of Chad's antics, TJ had been considered by many the "unselfish one"...the proverbial glue that holds the offense together. But now, he's just another over paid, selfish NFL player who made the pro bowl. Football is a team sport, so if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. It's amazing how quickly Marvin has lost control of this team. My favorite secquence of events from Saturday's game vs. the 49ers was when Marv chose not to go for it on 4th & 6 with 3 minutes to go after the defense had been on the field the entire second half. Did Palmer show that he is the leader of the team and demand that they go for it? No. I'm still waiting for the first time for that to happen. He probably rolled his eyes and pouted. Then Marv changed his mind after SF called a time out. The Bengals convert with a pass from Palmer to TJ and Housemazzili unloaded on the coaches right there from the field. It was simply embarrassing.

Stop taking you frustration out on TJ. That's not fair. He deserves props for what he's accomplished. You guys obviously don't remember back when Termain Mack was our only Pro Bowler. The team has regressed this year for sure, but they are nowhere near as awful as they were back then. Oh, and leave Chad alone too. If you don't think these two guys want to win you're crazy.
Happy Holidays

funny, the same people complaining about Chad and t.J. are the same people who would take their kids to get an autpgraph from ryan freel and josh hamilton. has T.J. or Chad ever been convicted of DUI or Smoking CRACK? thought so.... you fools are the reason Cincinnati has the bad backwater rep. it has.

Chad Johnson wants to be traded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He will lose his endorsement money now that the Bengals stink again. No one will use him as an endorsement for their products if he plays for a losing team. He can't afford to take the pay cut so he needs to be traded to a winning team. Mike Brown won't pay the extra money to keep him in town anyway. So long Ocho Stinko. smooch xoxo

You forgot: owner terrible, scouts terrible, cincy journalists who ask wimpy questions terrible.

TJ is the man,

Of course the Pro Bowl is the most boring meaningless useless sporting event--this is one sport that doesn't need an all-star game. Yet recognizing the best is proper and good.

It would be more interesting to watch all the Pro Bowlers play 18 holes at Pebble Beach.

TJ is deserving of awards but too bad for him he has to be stuck in the pile of crap that IS the Cincinnati Bengals organization.

I can't believe T J has become a Professional Bowler. Congrats on your new venture TJ. Hope you strike them down hard. No gutter balls.

Some of the people on this blog just never cease to amaze me.
TJ leads the NFL in receptions, makes the tough catches across the middle for 1st downs, makes great blocks, hustles on every play. He makes the Pro Bowl (deservedly at last), and now he's "selfish".
ANON 12:35 -- "All about himself and the money".
rasta dog 10:22 -- "But now, he's just another overpaid, selfish NFL player." Then he points out that TJ MAKES the crucial catch on 4th down and YELLS at the coaches for almost not going for it -- the same thing he does in his post!
I don't understand you people. You deserve the team you have.
TJ is one of the few bright spots in a miserable season.

Steve, no one said T.J. wasn't talented and having a career season.

The complaint is about the "me me me" comments from Chad and now T.J. He was openly saying he deserved to be on the Pro Bowl team and he would be disappointed if he didn't make it.

The only thing he should express disappointment about is the awful season by an under performing team.

And who cares about the Pro Bowl anyhow? No one watches the game, and the players only care because the have bonuses in place if they make the Pro Bowl team.

Fans only care about one thing, winning. I'm sure Jaguars fans are much happier with their team despite not having any players going to the Pro Bowl.

anonn 9:57/ you need to get a frickn grip!!!! You are the typical small town, conservitive, small market, small minded fan that many in the 'sports media" rely on. To say T.J. is being a"me,me,me" player becuase he thinks he deserves to be in the Pro bowl is not being selfish, it's pointing out a fact or is making an opinion. An opinion from a guy who unlike you puts his ass on the line every Sunday by catching passes. of course T.J. is "disappointed" with the season and has stated just that numerous times. You either didnt hear those qoutes or decided to not listen because you are the classic Cincinnati athlete player hater. And you cant bet your last damn dollar that their are plenty of players on the jaguars team who would love to be named to the Pro Bowl, so i dont know where you got that garbage from. If you were a "player" you would understand that simple fact. Get a grip loser.....this isnt Mayberry or plesantville........this is football, played by real men not geeky blogpagers who dont know what end of the jock strap goes on the front. In your case you should wear your jock strap over your head because you are not using your brain.
