So what's the truth?

MIAMI -- At his news conference last week, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said not to expect "earthshaking" news in the offseason and said the media jumped the gun in reporting the potential for changes on the roster and with assistant coaches. He said the club has re-done coaches' contracts but not announced the deals to the media.

The front office, while not allowing any excuses publicly, has pointed to a long list of reasons for the 6-9 season to date -- including series of injuries that "wiped out" the linebacker and running back positions.

Then Lewis told The Columbus Dispatch, in the most general terms, that there's the potential to "blow the whole thing up and start from scratch" -- whatever that means.

"We need to empty these shelves, empty these offices and start from scratch," Lewis told The Dispatch. "Yeah, because we haven't been good enough. We're not going to sit here and be complacent with it."

Bengals president Mike Brown holds the trump card to whatever Lewis might want to do.

For three weeks in a row, I had asked Lewis about the possibility of changes in the offseason. He has either refused to talk about it, even in vague terms, or answered in coach-speak generalities. No one else in the organization is authorized to talk on the record.

What I heard from other reliable sources inside the organization is that the front office doesn't think the Bengals are far away from contention.

Mark! Good job trying to pry it from Coach about what is going on, but the fact is, he doesn't refuse to tell you, I don't think he knows what to do.. Listen, I am a big Coach Lewis fan from day one, but lets be honest, what has he done. Yes we have changed some things, and we have won a few games, but now we are back to the old ways with NO PLAYOFFS. I have heard the excuses, injuries, players not buying in, attitudes, etc. and there is truth in them all, but really, all other teams deal with the same things. My biggest problem with Coach Lewis and Mike Brown is their refusal to open there eyes and place blame where it belongs. These players try hard, and they work hard, they are not always perfect but they do play. When you see the team (especially the defense) do a great job in a game, it is not the coaching, its actually inspite of the coaching. If any Bengal fan, Sports writer, Head coach, or Owner can say that our defensive coordinator is anything other than outmatched every game, you don't know football. We need to blow things up all right, but enough about this "buying into the system" and "play together" crap, they are buying into it, the problem is we bought into a LEMON. There are definite wholes to fill from the draft and FA, and we can be competitive soon, but we need a "FOOTBALL GUY" to be general manager (see Parcells in Miami) and we need coaching philosophy changes. We could have Julius Peppers, Bob Sanders, Brian Urlacher, Dwight Freeny, and the best CB in the league and we would still loose and would have to hear that guys are not buying into it. FACT is, our play calling is horrible, our schemes are High School level, and we don't know how to adjust. It is time for a change and blow it up, but lets do it the right way. I garauntee that if we get a proven guy to run operations and select players in a general manager type role, and get a defensive coordinator who is proven in this league we will win soon and often. Our talent is real and here, we need someone to mold it. Bratowski gets a pass for now, but he too needs to advance with the new NFL and get more movement from the offense. Sorry to go on for so long, but this is the reality, anything less than what I stated here, and we are talking about the same thing on December 30, 2008, 2009, 2010,...

A not so subtle hint sent by Lewis to the Cincinnati media in geberal, and the Enquirer in particular with his comments to the Dispatch. It's going to be a long, cold, QUIET winter.

"Not so far from contention" means Mike Brown's goal isn't to win the Super Bowl. Never has been, never will be.

As long as Mike Brown owns this team it will be a joke. They'll make excuses for everything but the true cause, which is Mike Brown and his family nepotism clown show.

Nobody in the Cincy media will call Mr Brown out on it, you continue to be his (and Marvin Lewis') sycophants.

Nobody asks Mr Brown or Marvin Lewis what planet he lives on that he thinks team is "not so far" from contention when their defense has been bottom five for three straight years under Chuck Bresnahan, even though they supposedly drafted for defense over and over again. Meanwhile the offense has regressed.

Groundhog day.

It sounds like you are pretty bitter about getting scooped by the Dispatch, honestly.
