Lewis on the future: Nothing `earthshaking'

For the fifth consecutive Marvin Lewis news conference, I have asked about the team's plans for the future:

This answer was what Lewis had this afternoon.

"Don't get your hopes all up on Monday. I think you really kind of, the comments I've heard jumped the gun. For the most part, we've redone our coaches' contracts each and every year. So you can relax, for the most part.

"And, so, things that way, we'll make decisions as we go forth in the offseason, but we're not going to have earthshaking news that you can run home about.

"We're going to evaluate our players and our coaching and try to move forward. We've got to build a better team that can go win games in this division week in and week out, and that means being able to run the football more effectively, being able to take care of the football, defend the run and eliminate explosive plays, and make plays on special teams. So that's what we're going to go back and look very, very hard at, how we got started and look at where we went sideways and make sure we get back on track.

"You're going to have injuries always play a part, but that's no excuse for it. When you have injuries you got to have your good players step up and got to go win games for you. We didn't do a good enough job as coaches to get our guy in position to do that, and that's why we're sitting here and looking at not playing on."

At least Marvin is working for the right guy. Neither one of them has a clue.

The only person that doesn't have "a clue" seem to be you. Thank God we have marvin lewis as "OUR COACH". I've the "other guys" and they dont compare with lewis. You can go back to the "Shula years" if you want to, but prefer to stick with lewis. Lets just hope the bengals pay as much attention to you and other with their ignorant ramblings and do whats best for the team and not the media or fans. When was the last time the media ever put together a team or win a game/ thought so.....lets just hope the media hacks in this town dont get in the way and drive marvin lewis out of town they way they have so many great people and athletes who have had the displeasure of having to deal with Cincinnati media and lemmings/fans.

considering that the Bengals had the easiest schedule in football this year (Mia, NYJ, STL, SF, AZ,& Balt twice)the only thing earth shattering next year will be a 4-12 finish when we play the NFC East & AFC South Divisions.

Only in Cincinnati do we have the low standard of "The Shula Years" to compare a proven mediocrity like Marvin Lewis to. In any other city Mr. Lewis would be history, because all other teams are not owned by greedy Mr. Nepotisms.

The Bengals will continue to be mediocre, and some gullible fans will continue to fill Paul Brown Stadium and line Mike Brown's pockets. The fans who are lemmings are the ones who put up with all the losing.

You know they make 2 switches on a tv and radio one changes the channel and the other turns it off if ya don't like what ya see stop complaining and turn it off or change the channel i mean its not rocket science and if ya don't like whats going on with either team you don't have to support them oh imagine that but then you wouldn't have something to complain about it seems in this town someone has to have something to complain about

Only 1 winning season in 5 years. Yes let's keep the coach and the same players again. It's a proven winner!

Mark, Are these really direct, true Marvin quotes from a news conference??

Enquirer brass need to support you to step up and ask "Marvin, what the h_ll did you just say?!?"

"Could you please interpret to English?"

how much difference is there between the patriots and the bengals? Miles and miles. The pats made the conf title game last year and did 2 earthshaking things (Moss and A. Thomas). The bengals go at best 7-9 and the status quo is ok? 5 years and nothing to show for the ML era. Fire him, fire ALL assistants, hire a GM, a real VP of football ops, a good coach. Everyone works under the same cap, so money isn't a reason, it is the people who run this organization. And we have to pay for that stadium. What a bunch of crap.

Marvin Lewis has proven that he is, at best, an average coach. The defense sucks, and the offense can't score when it needs to. I keep hearing "The coach doesn't make the plays, it is the players." The only problem with that is that the coach picks the players. The thing that is most disenhearting is that nothing substantial will change at least until 2010. I think that Cincinnati deserves a great coach.

Go ahead and use the "Shula years" as your standard to evaluate the performance of Marvin Lewis. I will use the "Paul Brown, Forrest Gregg and Sam Wyche years" as my standard. Lewis fails miserably if you compare him to coaches that had the respect and control of their players. Lewis fails when compared to coaches who actually understand the game of football. Lewis and the other idiots who pretend to be coaches must go.

Thank you Mrs. Lewis. I think your husband has done a great job!
Sincerely- The rest of the NFL

I think Marvin could be a really excellent coach if he worked in a well run organization. As it stands now his ability as coach will be stunted as long he stays in this mickey mouse organization.

Eventually Marvin (and Chad, and Carson, and TJ) will figure that out, move on to a real franchise and probably win super bowls. For those of stuck with the brown family, we aren't so fortunate.

A 27th ranksed defense? Hey thats fine by us. Lets give all the D coaches another contract. How long has it been that we've had even a mediocre defense?

Until then, 8-8 is great. Keep buying those seat licenses, and Bengal gear everyone, the bengals have to keep paying Bob "screw the taxpayers" Bedinghaus' lifetime salary...

Onto some actual pro football... Good luck to the Jags and Steelers, I hope to you both in the AFC championship game!

we may be able to switch the channel to turn off these crappy teams, but we have to pay for their stadiums no matter what.

that ain't rocket science either.

I agree with the poster who commented on the relative ease of the Bengals' schedule this year, which has lead to the 7-9 record (I'm giving the B's the Miami game...which if they lose, wow...) If it wasn't for the easy schedule, they'd be a lot worse off, I believe.

Also, look back at the 11-5 season's schedule... Another cake-walk schedule.

Anyway, the B's always seem to pull of 6-10, 7-9, 8-8 or whatever, just good enough to get the fans excited that next year might be better.... But look back, it's the same year after year.

We all know what needs to be done to "fix" this franchise... The Browns need to sell it, to someone who is NOT related to them in any way.
