Post-mortem, Bengals 19-14

Marvin Lewis: We had two goals -- win the football game and not allow them (Browns) to earn a playoff spot here in our place."

Lewis on rookie starters Marvin White, Chinedum Ndukwe and Leon Hall in the secondary: "They did a good job. There's only one guy back there with more than two year's experience (backup cornerback Deltha O'Neal). They made plays, and they had fun."

Browns coach Romeo Crennel, whose team needed to win today to clinch a playoff berth: "We were not able to get it done today. It's disappointing, realizing what was on the line and what was at stake."

BROWNS IN BIND: Tennessee’s 10-6 victory against the Jets, coupled with the Browns loss, moved the Titans into the sixth and final seed of the AFC playoff race. If Tennessee can win at Indianapolis on Sunday night, the Titans are in and the Browns out, even if the Browns were to defeat San Francisco in Cleveland on Sunday.

Post-mortem, Bengals Season.

Yea we won. whoop whoop. I want to know who the bonehead was calling a pass play late in the game when we needed to kill the clock and Kenny had run all over the Browns. The OC or did Carson change it at the line? Even Toni Grossi made the same comment in his blog during the game.

Wow, once again a Bengals team can't even put three good quarters together, never mind four! Thanks for the gift Cleveland--you did a splendid Ravens/Jets imitation today.

Mike Brown and all the coaches suck and need to be run out of town ASAP.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Marvin Lewis wants idiot Mike Brown to make "serious" changes (like hiring a REAL General Manager and a few scouts who know what the heck they are doing)?

Why are you getting scooped by ESPN on these things????

Let's see....

We win a game that hasn't mattered in weeks....

Our backup quarterback still hasn't seen a regular season snap...

Our draft position got worse....

Pittsburg goes to the playoffs instead of Cleveland....

I don't see this win as any benefit to either the '07 Bengals or the '08 Bengals.

Mark,

You are a flippin idiot and about one of the worst sports writers I have have read. You have no balls and continue to coddle the Benglas by not asking the tough questions. You only publish what the Bengals PR department and Marvin Lewis tell you. How is that reporting?

And now you publish an article about payback. You are so out of touch with not only the fan base, but fail to recognize that even the Bengals said this game was not a revenge game. If you would have spoken to many of the fans yesterday, you would have seen that the fans were generally mellow about this game, with many wanting to see the Browns win so that Pittsburgh didn't clinch. Even Carson said he didn't see it as a revenge game. Yet you put out all this dribble about revenge and payback which was only fabricated by you.

So in closing, in 2008, I hope you grow some balls and become a real reporter. And, I hope you stop twisting stories into something that isn't there. If not, I hope you lose your job, like Marvin Lewis.

Just wanted to point out to Marvin that his "two goals" were really one goal. Then again, the finer points of the English language are as foreign to him as are the finer points of offensive and defensive strategy. Anyone else nauseated by Marvin's tired old responses to interview questions? And how about asserting control of your team, Coach, by benching Ocho Farce-O after he dropped that pass in the first series? Carson, maybe you should get yourself traded to a team whose receiver corps is not a group of punks.

just kind of putting this out there. is Carson palmer just trying to get the first round draft choice, or is he shaving points? his potential is much higher than how he has played, and we all know that being Bengals fans. he doesn't seem worth the trouble anymore on wasting our money on his salary.

Breshnahan has been the brunt of anger, but the fact is once the linebacker situation improved, the defense was better than the offense.Dhani was a find and Jeanty is solid. What has deteriorated is the offense. Predictable, too many dropped passes, bad throws and emotional outbursts.

can we finally say that Kenny should have started this year over Rudi? Why didn't the Bengals coaching staff ever get the hint?

If anyone could show me a receiver who doesn't drop passes I will show you a wet dream. T.O. is one season away from having the most dropped passes in a year. Real football fans would know that and not sweat Chad Johnson as much as they do. I would be more concerned about Carson's passes than anything because it wouldn't matter what receiver was on the other end, they would have to be over 10ft tall to catch Carson's passes. Allen Cutler is an a**. A whole game of mistakes and all he can talk about is Chad going out of bounds? Calling him soft and a pus was simply uncalled for. I remember the Buffalo game. No Pus there. Chad going out of bounds would of cost them the game no more than Carson's interceptions and Kenny's fumble. Lets try and keep it real people. To let your number one receiver go without anyone to fill in his spot would be stupid. Who do we have Chatman? Holt? I respect them but they are not Chad and never will be. Keep your head up Chad. A winning season and they will all soon forget.

I've lived in Cincinnati for the past 18 months and I've become a fan of the Bengals. I must say that I'm a bit surprised by some of the sentiment. It seems that if the Bengals lose, that they are terrible and if they win that they shouldn't have for some "other" reason. Admittedly, I don't have the history of pain but thought I would make some observations:

AFC North foes - We should always want the others to lose. We don't want the Browns to get playoff experience and confidence (and certainly not a parade near the flammable Cuyahoga River). Momentum can be big in the off-season. I hope a QB controversy starts in Cleveland. Did the Steelers win against the Bengals on the last game of the season last year affect the team dynamic in Cinci last year? I imagine it did. Bottom line, the Steelers were going to make the playoffs this year. Let's hope the other teams are in pain.

I don't know Mark and he doesn't need me to defend him, but ease up on the guy. It's absolutely clear to me that Marvin is NOT going to say anything relevant. When Mark reports ML's "non-quotes" he's doing us a service and probably smirking to himself that we will see the things he sees every day. I don't think the Mort report on Sunday was much of a news flash. Heck, the Bengals only had 2 healthy LB's dressed for the Pats game. ML had better be questioning the personnel department. Mark can't force the Bengals to talk (Is the reporter in Boston getting anything good from the Pats?)

There will always be plays and players for us to challenge. Kenny is a good example. He had a great game yesterday until his fumble almost cost the team the game. Personally, I'm still questioning the 2-pt try in the first half. But of bigger concern should be that another AFC team is going to be reloading. The creation of a VP of Football Ops in Miami is troubling. They are making a statement about the state of their organization. Why would Parcell's put himself in the AFC when he had a shot to go to the (horrible) NFC South. Anyone think the Dolphins make the playoffs before the Bengals do? (3-4 years out perhaps)

The off-season will be troubling for the fans. I assume there will be wholesale coaching changes which will lead to some player changes. Nothing guarantees us that the new players will be materially better than the ones we have now. All things being equal (salary), if you were a free agent (or an existing Bengal not under contract...like Dhani), would you rather be in the 'nati or anywhere else that has demonstrated a commitment to winning football games and having talented players?

Go Bengals. Merry Christmas.

ANON 12:23 is right. For as bad as our defense has been, and it has been horrible at times, Bob Bratkowski is the coordinator they should get rid of first. He has done a horrible job. This offense for all the talent and money invested in it needs to put up more that 19 on the Browns (and the defense gave them the two touchdowns) This offense is so predictable that I can almost call every play, and I am only a fan. Lord knows how easy it is for a defensive coordinator to call all their plays. Both the coordinators have done a lousy job this year, but Bob has the players, Chuck doesn’t We should look at Cam Cameron, he will be available at season’s end.

Your an ASSHOLE! Keep up the good work Mark!

At the end of the day, how a story is written is not a life and death issue. Mark does a nice job covering the organization that has an owner who is stuck with a 1960s mindset and a frustrated coach who doesn't say a whole lot. Back off and just be happy about the win.
