NFL suspends Joseph for KC game

The Bengals will be without starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph for the game Sunday at Kansas City. The NFL has suspended the second-year player for one game and fined him one game check as discipline, stemming from his marijuana possession arrest in Northern Kentucky last January. He violated the league's substance abuse policy.

Rookie Leon Hall is likely to start in Joseph's place, opposite eighth-year pro Deltha O'Neal.

This just in from Bengals PR:

The Bengals have been notified by the NFL that CB Johnathan Joseph has been suspended without pay for one game -- this Sunday at Kansas City -- for violating the NFL Substance Abuse Policy. Joseph will also be fined an additional game check, for the week following the Kansas City game.

Joseph’s penalty relates to his arrest in Kentucky last January for possession of marijuana. After accepting a diversionary arrangement, he has since complied fully with all league and law-enforcement obligations in regard to resolving the matter, and his case has now been dismissed by Kentucky authorities.

Joseph may not attend practices this week, but will be allowed to attend meetings and to work out individually at team facilities. He will be able to rejoin all team activities on Monday of next week.

Does anybody want my tickets?

My gosh, I think this is going to get worse in Bengaldom before it gets better unfortunately!
I was hoping we'd still get to 10-6 with our week schedule and the injured/suspended players coming back, but I'm beginning to lose faith for this season.

Note To Marvin: While I do hold each player responsible for their actions I hold YOU responsible for choosing these players. This is way too much. Get your act together please. If not, it is time to move on.

The Bengals get to play against Jared "2 DUIs" Allen this week.

Someone should ask Allen how he was only suspended 4 games and then had that suspension reduced to 2 games.

I didn't think players could get suspended until their second substance abuse violation. I thought this was part of the collective bargaining agreement.

Joseph gets a game for a charge that was dismissed but Joey Porter attacks another player at a casino and only gets a fine?

This latest suspension is ridiculous.

Joseph gets punished in GAME 5 for something that happened off the field 9 months ago.

In contrast, Bill Bellichick does not get suspended at all for blatantly cheating, but his punishment is swiftly handed out.

If JJ was to be suspended, it should have happened in Game 1, NOT in the middle of the season.

Roger Goodell is not a good commissioner. His decisions are capricious at best and smack of favoritism towards large markets and the "old boy" network. As long as he is in office, you can bet the Bengals will not get a fair shake.

That said, this decision further emphasizes the point that you just can't screw around off the field in today's NFL. ARE YOU LISTENING BENGALS????

We have a bunch of thugs, babies, and jerks! It was tolerated just because we were winning for the first time in over a decade. But lets face it, Marvin Lewis is out-coached on the field most weeks, and makes us the laughing stock of the NFL with all of the off-the field trash he has brought in. We would still be the big "worst headline" team if not for Vick. Wonder if Cowher would be interested in Cincy? Bill Evans

Allan's right - marijuana possessions should be small potatoes compared to cheating and fighting. By the same token, if I were a Bengal, at this point I'd watch my every move. You got an idiot doling out punishment, but he ain't goin anywhere anytime soon.

Typical Bungles. They should follow the lead of our great Sheriff, in learning how to flaut the law and get away with it.

I don't think we need to jump off a cliff. The Bengals had to know that this was coming sooner or later. The NFL is cracking down on every violation they come across. Now, they are down the list to Jonathan Joseph. It's his turn. We can survive one game without him. Hopefully, this is the last on our team anyway.

news flash cincy:

i love you, you are my hometown. i live in new york city, all i hear about is bengals and jets. you broke my heart on monday. youve been breaking my heart since you collapsed during that wild card game. more importantly, i have beef with the bengals PR/.com SQUADRON.

you (bengals.com) constantly give away key points about our football team, dog players, over analyze key plays. etc. other teams read our site and most importantly our players read our sight. its time to stop analyzing this football team, and start playing football.

i think its bunker time. this team needs to dissapear and stop talking to the press. marvin needs to get a bunker strategy. tie these dudes up, feed them film and reps. STOP PAYING ATTENTION TO THE PRESS BENGALS!!! our players minds are getting polluted. they even recently commented, we need to stop reading our own press clippings. screw you cincinnati news/pr spin machine for putting to much pressure on a young team. weve got 2 more years or so to get a ring, so lets stop agonizing over losses, and pick up the pieces and move on, with marvins bullshit or not. ive never seen a coach so silent during games.

Let's face it the bengals are a joke at the tax payers expense. If marvin does keep his job after this season which will be a wash, it's because the fans fill the seats. But trust me Mike Brown, if we continue with these 8-8 seasons they won't be filling the seats anymore. Marvin has been here 5 years and only one playoff game to show for it.

Gheeezz! Why the long delay? That's crazy. I agree these players need to be disciplined, but do it in a timely manner.

Any word of explanation why they waited so long?

Not being a conspiracy theorist or anything, but this sure seems suspicious. Maybe what doesn't kill them will make them stronger.

You can say what you like about the Bengals off-field troubles, but Marvin has done a great job of turning the Bengals into a respectable team. I remember the bad years when the Bengals were a joke on the field. I'd take today's Bengals any day. With that said, I do think it's time the Bengals address the on-field and off-field problems. Had we not lost key contributors like Chris Henry to suspension, we might have a couple more W's. As for anyone who suggests that Marvin should move on, I'll just say 8-8 is a lot better than 2-14.

Dear Mr Marvin Lewis,

Please resign and take your staff with you. On your way out, please suggest management put in the St X High School football coaching staff for the rest of the season.

Warm Regards,

Cincinnati Bengal Fans

I am cincy raised and have been in Phoenix since 1991. ( literally the month PB died.)I cannot stand much more of this circus. I have held firm in my loyalties but when is enough enough?? I pay for Direct TV to watch ONLY Bengal games. My rewards are: more lackluster efforts, seeing opposing players have "career Days" vs our defense, and continual legal embarrasments for my city. Get some order!
This team has been cursed since that " incident" in Seattle a long time ago. Who knew it would be the start of a long nightmare?

Marvin you have wore out your welcome in Cincinnati. Your shortcomings as a coach a very clear and your players have lost faith in you. Thanks for your time, but your opportunity is over. Your fan base is dropping like a Britney Spears' panties.

The only sport in the world where millionaire players shoot at night clubs, fight in casinos, habitual drug users and dui offenders, and or course DOG FIGHTERS. Note to players: When you get rich leave your felony friends behind and start being a role model for kids.

Seems odd to me at best.

Here you have a commissioner (supposedly a Pittsburgh native, BTW) who can just sort of run his own dictatorship thanks to an undefined and (Odell/Travis Henry aside) unchallenged "system" for discipline.

Seems pretty arbitrary. Also unfortunate for a team owner who voted against The Commish.

Marvin Lewis is one of the worst coaches in the NFL. Please leave, take all your assistants with you, and bring in a real coach who knows what character is and how to draft it (or trade for it).

Time and time again the Bengals or other football players land in trouble. This is why I follow college football. GO BEARCATS!!!

yet another reason why marijuana is taken waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously by authorities. i know we all have our stories, but seriously, if youre an nfl player, i dont doubt that marijuana may help with the pain of dealing with moss (another smoker) and ward and all the greats out there that push your body to the limit and inevitably to discomfort and pain. the Nixon admin. threw out a report saying grass should be decriminalized, and its only a matter of time before such petty matters aren't worth tearing down teams because someone chose to relax with something safer than alcohol

Marvin's lack of attention to detail with his own players has caught up with him and the team.
His time here was needed---but now someone else needs to come to town and give this team an attitude adjustment. Two words: BILL COWHER!
We love Chad too--but Cowher wouldn't let him rule the roost.

Note to whining/not in touch with reality Bengals fans: You went 15 consecutive years with losing records. You were considered the WORST franchise not only in the NFL, but in all of sports. How quickly you forget how pathetic you were. Your franchise had no facilities, no coaches, no talent, no ability to sign free agents, no sell-outs, and absolutely no hope. You also had ZERO community involvement. Let's not forget the the hundreds of thousands of dollars of charity work that Marvin and his players have done in the city. All things have changed because of Marvin. The job he has done in 4 years is nothing short of extraodinary. You're still stuck with Mike Brown, and he makes most of these player personnel decisions, not Marvin. Then Bengals are one of only 5 teams that have not had a losing record in the last 4 seasons. 5 teams. Marvin has things pointed in the right direction, despite having some setbacks with knuckleheads and punks. I read your rantings, and I can only think you've been a Bengals fan for about 5 years. Have you really forgotten about the dark ages of doom? Wake up.

Marvin your a new younger head coach and it's time to pull in the raines on your team and learn from your mistakes durng the next round of recruiting. You need to stay in Cincinati and get the Bengals to a level of play like other successful teams as you said you'd do. Cincinati is a patient city as shown with the Reds and Bengals but time is short and we really do not need any more bad news. Additionally if we're in a rebuilding year why not let the younger players play more to see waht they have to offer. A Bengal fan in Tennessee!

I got a thought. How about being a role model to your own kids. You lazy bunch of cry babies. Half the team are damn near kids themselves. Another thought, how much money were any of you bringing in at the tender age of 22. Who are the losers now? I love the bengals but really hate the fickle fans. I go to the games and half the fans don't even get out of their seats, so much for a 12th man. Who since the 88 super bowl has done a better job than Marvin??? I'm waiting for an answer.... Way to go fan base... You guys suck more than the team. Quit crying and go jump on somebody else's band wagon.

So Joseph can't be a Young Leader in Cincinnati, start foundations, support his community, but isn't allowed to enjoy a relaxing smoke?

Thank you War on Drugs, you continue to waste my tax dollars and levy your hypocritical punishments upon the populace.

I love the fan critics. Marvin might be BETTER than what we had and yes we're saddled with the dumbest owner in the history of ALL sports (not just the NFL) but Marvin is an incompetent coach when it comes to game strategy, clock management, replay handling, and time out economics. He's proven over and over and over again that his #1 skill is LOSING games that are won. He might be a great guy, and a decent coach, but he's not a great coach, and never will be, and this team needs to fire all its coaches and go in a different direction. Not going to the playoffs is not going to the playoffs whether the team is 1-15 or 7-9.
