Keiwan Ratliff waived

The Bengals just announced that cornerback Keiwan Ratliff, their first of two second-round draft picks in 2004, has been waived. He leaves with 51 career games played and eight starts for the Bengals. Word inside the coaching offices was Ratliff was not a courageous player and lacked toughness.

In training camp, Ratliff said if he was going to be the team's fourth cornerback -- and he was -- he would rather be released.

The Bengals today signed Blue Adams, formerly of the University of Cincinnati, in Ratliff's spot. Adams is expected to make an immediate contribution to special teams.

Adams had a neck injury in minicamp for the Bengals and was limited in the preseason and training camp.

Adams signed a two-year contract. Adams opened 2007 with the Bengals, signing as a free agent on May 7. He missed the first three preseason games while rehabbing his neck injury and played only in Cincinnati’s preseason finale. He was waived by the Bengals on Sept. 2. Adams played for Jacksonville as a rookie in 2003, did not play in 2004, and played for Tampa Bay in 2005-06. He played in every game for Tampa Bay in 2006, ranking third on the team with 19 special teams tackles.

I guess you can call it his "Keiwan Song" as a Bengal.

He leaves as the worst draft pick of Marvin Lewis' career so far. At least the other guys lost to suspensions or injury had some talent. This guy was a 2nd round pick. You'd have expected him to be a starter after a couple of years if he was as good as his draft position.

Would it not have been wiser to cut Chatman in the first place and keep Frazier? At least Ratliff was on the field of play in a position to make some plays!

Mark, is there any update on Kilmer and other special teams players who have been dinged?

It's interesting three weeks into the season to see that Kaesviharn, Simmons, Stewart and Wilkins have not made any impacts with their new teams. Three tackles between the four of them...and not many positive numbers in the win column either. One in total between them all (and that was Oakland against the Browns).

Still, a shame the Bengals took their eye off the ball on special teams. It killed last season and it will do the same this time round.

Should have signed Eddie Drummond when he was released from the Lions. Proven to return kicks and punts.

It's a shame Keiwan doesn't have better speed, he probably has the best instincts on the ball and is a decent tackler...It's mainly about speed for many positions anymore.

Releasing Ratliff has to be a wake-up call for the rest of the D. Good call, Marvin!!!

The Bengals have lost thier eye for talent like the Reds cannot judge a good pitcher. When LaVar Marshall signed and started in 1 week it appeared to me that we were toast then. I was searching for Bruce Coslet on the sidelines lately with all the absurd plays.

This is why Bengals cannot get better and reach the next level. Questionable coaching notwithstanding. Personel moves have been worse. I understand about injuries but on ield this ream lacks character. Which you saw last year off field. With salary cap an draft picks within first 3 rounds are like gold. If Ratliff had become a stater you don't have to draft a CB this year. So instead of drafting players to improve weak positions. Bengals have draft to fix other positions they already drafted and misfired on. Next year Willie may retire. So you need improve O Line. Rudi may be feeling effects of pounding over years. Bengals may have to draft a RB high if Perry and Irons look iffy. Look at Detroit drafting a those WR's high and look at there team. Yea now they have good WR's but overall team weak. With Henry back only postions Bengals really strong at are QB & WR.

BTW Bengals should sit any injured players Monday nite. I predict Patriots 48 - Bengals 20. Not trying be smartazz. It could be ugly Monday nite. Really, really ugly!
