Seahawks win 24-21

Seattle took the lead back, 24-21, on a 22-yard pass from Matt Hasselbeck to Nate Burleson.

The Bengals lost the kickoff return on a fumble after Glenn Holt was hit hard and caughed up the ball.

The Bengals had all three timeouts remaining.

Shaun Alexander recorded his 36th 100-yard rush game, and the Seahawks are 30-6 in those games.

The Bengals turned the ball over four times.

Absolutely pathetic showing by the Bengals in the final two minutes.

at 9/23/2007 7:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice effort by "special" teams:
- Opening kickoff goes for 70+ yards, setting up an early touchdown
- 2 punts were fair caught on the 5 yard line
- After going ahead late in the game, the kick-off goes out of bounds, setting up Seattle's game winning drive on the 40 yard line
- With one minute and three timeouts to go, the kick-off is fumbled away and the Bengals never get a chance
Kind of makes the defense's effort against the Browns look solid.

Okay, enough is enough. Even with a normal host of available linebackers, their defense looks no different than the garbage they threw out in 2006. Not able to come up with any plays on big 3rd downs. And Special Teams again? I know coaching didn't cause that final fumble, but what about earlier in the game...Marvin is going to not make a move with his coaches that will cost him his job. 7-9 at best this year.

You just KNEW they were going to lose when Kenny Watson got that touchdown and the Seahawks had 2:42 left on the clock with all their timeouts.

So how many games has it been since our franchise player has had a sack? Single biggest mistake of the offseason: franchise tagging Justin Smith.

You can't be surprised at the outcome. You must admit, the Bengals are not a well coached or disciplined team, no matter how much you like Marvin Lewis. The facts don't lie. They aren't getting it done. Line play on both sides of the ball were weak today, as was special teams and pass defense. Take off the 'rose (orange?)colored glasses', folks. This is a 6-10 team. The truth hurts.

There is little difference between the Bengals of 2007 and the Bengals of 2000 except there's more talent on the offensive side which makes the results even more frustrating. Despite all the lousy play, they still had a chance to win the game if the defense can step up and make a play (3rd and 10 or 4th and 1) on the last drive, but that just doesn't happen. It happened in the opening game only because they were lucky that Heap didn't catch the touchdown pass that was right there. Marvin has made absolutely no difference in this franchise's ability to be tough when it counts despite all of you media's constant characterization of the new attitude. The Bengals are the same mediocre organization of years ago which translates into 8 and 8 and continual mediocrity.

Here is a list of people who should be fired tomorrow:

Marvin Lewis - pitiful, hugging the opposing coach after the game.
Why go for 2 in that situation? Bizarre. This guy is an idiot.

Chuck Breshnahan - because he should have been fired last year.

Special Teams Coach. obvious.

Shane Graham, because what idiot kicks the ball out of bounds in that situation?

Holt - because why do we need a fourth string receiver who fumbles the game away?

anyone else?

I know! We had too many mental mistakes. Our team hung in there until the very end. Blah, Blah, Blah!
Our Punt return team has been playing like %@*&
Our defense needs help and has had for 5 years. Please just say it Marvin changes they are a comin!!!

Hard to believe the fans of Cincinnati coughed up all that money to build this crappy franchise a stadium... it would have been better spent on something else.

Until Mike Brown is gone this team is doomed.

Marvin Lewis deserves to get fired. Most teams don't wait five years for no playoff wins.

The Bengals loss today and the manner in which they lost it smacks of one thing, a team in disarray...Yes Marvin, we are smart enough to recognize that when we see it...Remember, before you were here, we went through years off it...Our team is lost under your lack of leadership, as displayed today by the penalties, turnovers and missed opportunities...Oh, and lets not forget the failed 2 point conversion...You know the one...Had we just kicked the "meaningless" extra point the Bengals would then had a minute left with 3 timeouts to kick a field goal...I'm sure it was a good call Marvin, or maybe I just wouldn't understand...

This is a very sorry team. We have a sorry head coach and definately a sorry defensive coordinator. I mean if he wasn't with the Bengals, would he even have a job in this league? I doubt it. Its gonna be another long year. 8-8 is a pipe dream at this point. It would actually be better to go 4-12 than 8-8 because then maybe some coaches would actually be held responsible for this mess and get fired.

Mark,

Leadership of this football team has to change as 3 glaring weaknesses continue to haunt this organization:

1 - No discipline on and off the field. Today several late hits, personal fouls, and offensive/defensive offsides played a major role in the time of possession.
2 - Special teams - We continuously give up the big play and we lack execution in crunch time. Dating back to even last year, we find ways to keep teams in the game or stay one step ahead.
3 - Defensive letdowns - Some discipline, some youth, some injury, but the bottom line is that we cannot ask the offense to win every game. You have to hold the other team at the end of the game sometime.

Marvin has brought the Bengals back to respectability, but is no better than a competitive 8-8 team. We need someone like Marty Schottenheimer (just a thought) to take us to the next step.

what a joke. this looks like the 90's bengals again-they just keep finding a way to lose games. can't wait to see marvin's non-comments after this one. i'm no football genius, but our safeties can't help on the deep ball at all. maybe we should stop running the cover 2.

it's time to fire darin simmons, too. squib kicks for an nfl team are unacceptable, and they still can't cover any of them. they're better off just kicking it out of bounds.

The Bengals simply are not winners. Winners like the Steelers, Patriots, Colts.....would have won that game. This is all a reflection of the coaching staff.....starting at the top!!!!

Again, it is time or Marvin to go!!!

This team with so much talent makes every game seem like amateur hour.

How many lousy defensive games in a row (over the last 2-3 seasons no less) does it take to before we will see sme improvement?

Next week the Bengals will be 1-3; by the end of October they'll be lucky to be 2-5 with the season and by the end of the season 7-9.

Each passing game shows what a fluke the 2005 season was without a very abnormal and very lucky take-away rate, how far would the Bengals have gone? Not very...

Someone with a proven record of success needs to step in now and make something of this team -- Bill Parcells would be a great candidate.

I think the poll, "Who gets your game ball?", is ridiculous. They LOST - no one gets a game ball!

Burleson gets a game ball, duh! This team stinks. Five years of the "new regime" and it's the same as the old regime.

I am so tired of this team finding a way to lose the game. What is it going to take for UP-Chuck to get some juevos and call a couple all out blitzes when the game is on the line. And can ANYONE tell me why our coaching staff is so happy with Justin Smith. He seems like a good guy, but as a football player he is just not cutting it. When was the last time he made a big stop, game changing play, or even a sack. He is out of position so often, he leaves our defense open to the cutback run. But enough picking on Justin, how about Jonathan Joseph. Is he our new TOAST? What was he thinking letting the receiver get behind him with a minute left????

What is wrong with our safeties?? Why can they not help cover the deep ball. It seems like Joseph and Hall were counting on help and it just was not there. Someone help me out here... Whose fault was that last play. Jonathan Joseph for letting the receiver get behind him, or Madieu Williams for not getting back to give him help. Or even better, was it the defensive line for not even getting a whiff of a pass rush on a HUGE play with less than a minute in the game. Would it be asking too much for a couple of big blitzes with the game on the line. Not Up-Chuck... His Philosophy - bend but break when it counts!

Special teams aside, the Bengals actually played a fairly good game, given the hostile environment and the caliber of the opponent. The running game really started clicking once Kenny Watson was the feature back. Rudi looks like he's lost a step and no longer bounces off tackles like he did before the big contract, the weight loss and the new diet. The offensive play calling was really horrible. Why so many deep balls? The Seahawks repeatedly demonstrated that they couldn't cover Ocho Cinco and Housh on the intermediate routes, yet Bratkowski kept going for home runs. Bratkowski should really go back and watch the tape of today's Packers' victory. Favre dinked and dunked the Bolts to death. Did anyone see a single slant route today? I didn't. And the 2-point conversion call was one of the all-time worst I have ever seen. You've just run the ball right down the Seahawks throat and you call a slow-developing sweep to the left? Kick the extra point, then if the Seahawks score, all you need is a field goal to win.

I have a proven recipe for success, and this is better than Skyline Chili...

Ingredients needed: undisciplined talent, loyal fans, difficult ownership, and conistently underperforms

Recipe: mix all ingredients and just before it explodes, add Marty Schottenheimer!

Tastes like: PLAYOFFS YEAR-IN AND YEAR-OUT

Feeds: The entire Jungle!

see also: 80's Browns, 90's Chiefs, and early 2000's Charges. See also same teams now without the figure out what's missing!

Get off the defenses back. They did what they needed to do to give this team a chance to win. The team started two possessions on Seattle's side and recorded no points, so the D was even giving them good field position. Sum it up to say even mediocre special team play would have resulted in a 10 point win. Terrible kick coverage to start the game led to the first touchdown, a short field led to the last touchdown, a Palmer pick led to another one. If special teams play doesn't improve, Carson's gonna have to be perfect. And another point on the defense--if a good number of the players on your D that actually play a vast majority of the snaps are also playing special teams, you've got a problem.

You guys act like your surprised. Some of us predicted a 6-10 or 5-11 season before the season started and we were mocked. This is exactly what anyone who knows football knew would happen. It's simple-"marvin can't draft talent". It looks like a top ten draft pick for Marvin to pickup a speed back.

Everything the Bengals have handed us fans since last year's meltdown has been unfiltered crap. They're all a bunch of blustery trash talkers at the skill positions on offense and defense. I feel bad for Willie, Geathers, Palmer, etc. They have to suffer defeat with these fools.

I'm done with this team. From the top where they won't spend money on quality free agents, to the coaching staff that demeans the fans and mismanages the games, to the players who are always getting arrested or talking trash they can't back up, its ALL GARBAGE!
Even if they were 3-0, I'd still be sick of this team because they'd be acting way too tough for their track record. GET OVER YOURSELVES MARVIN AND CO. YOU HAVEN'T DONE SQUAT!!!!!!!!

Give me back my Reds, at least they don't act stupid like the Bengals. I'll take Grif, Dunn, and Phillips at sub 500 anyday over the Bungals.

bottom line: you can talktalktalktalktalktalktalktalktalk
until you're blue about how great the bengals are, but show me.

Lewis continues to mis-manage the game and/or clock. The failed 2 point conversion attempt speaks for itself. Since Lewis is so consistently poor at managing this part of the game, why should we believe he manages the other parts very well?

MARK, Pleeeeaaaaase ask Marvin to explain the logic on the 2 pt conversion atempt? I am serious! WHAT WAS THAT? Marvin should thank Glen Holt for fumbling that kickoff. Could you imagine if Palmer had taken them down for tying FG. Then Bengals lost in OT? How would Marvin explain that? It makes absolutely no sense. Bengals scored with what 3 mins to go? So even if 2 Pt conversion works. It's 23-17 Bengals. 1Pt it's 22-17. So Seattle needs a TD either way correct. But if Seattle scores TD and Cincy gets ball back. The last minute drive is for the win not the tie. After thinking about it I realize what Marvin thinking. Marvin thought if Seattle scored TD. There would be no time left for Bengal Offense to score. So he thinks they will miss extra point? Why would anyone think Bengal Def was gonna play tough there? Marvin outcoaches himself. He screwed up end of Tampa game last year too. MARVIN NEEDS TO GO RIGHT NOW! I am serious. Marvin is a poor coach and his staff sucks too. The Defensive staff and special teams coach should have been removed last year. I love see what a Bill Parcells type coach do with this team. It's sad how screwed up this organization is. Monday night is going to be a bloodbath. Patriots 48 - Bengals 20.

1 win 5 losses in the last 6 regular season games. The 1 win was a fluke. It's time for Marvin to go, But it ain't gonna happen. He works cheap and after so many years of far below .500 teams, .500 suits Mike Brown just fine, especially when the stadium sells out and he is raking in the dough.

Bearcats vs. Louisville, Homecoming Oct 13. This is a probably a sell out. The Bungles are back.

Anyone that is knowledgeable about football expect the Bungals to actually compete?? This team will always be subpar and below average.Marvin Lewis is supposed to be a defensive guru so why does he need an idiot like Bresnahan? It's all about the money and MB is not going to pay for top caliber coaches.
Time to trade Chad for Hawk or Merriman. Mike Brown needs to resign and let anyone with football skills run this organization-he can still count the money-which is the only thing he is capable of

I didn't watch the game yesterday. I was watching the Steelers, who, by the way, are a well-coached, disciplined, good football team.

However, I wish I would have watched the Bengals. I would have gotten a good laugh out of it.

I agree with all the posters who have seen the similarities between the 2000 Bungles and the 2007 Bungles. The key similarity (other than the team as a whole are buffoons), is Mike Brown...

How do you manage to shank a kickoff out of bounds? And then Ocho Stinko running his mouth that no one could stop the offense... Apparently, Seattle could and DID stop the offense, including two interceptions... And two fair catches on the 5 yard line? Poor coaching at best...

I almost feel bad for Carson Palmer, and to a certain extent TJ and Chad Johnson - Three excellent players, with HOF credentials at this point in their career, stuck on a team that will never go anywhere, ala Dan Marino.

Anyway, Mike Brown is the root cause of this conundrum called the Cincinnati Bengals.

Everybody wants to talk about what they think is needing to perged from the team. Ok lets play GM for a second and ask, What is the alternative? Who would want to come in and Coach this team? Anybody?...... Hmm.... Seems like there is DEAD SILENCE in the room. So anybody have any ideas who we could get to come in and fix this? Before we go hacking off limbs, lets be realistic and admit. NOBODY respects Brown as a GM. He got lucky when he got Lewis.

Justin Smith is the most overpaid defensive player in the NFL. Did you see his sorry attempts to rush the QB yesterday?

Man, people really get worked up after the Bengals lose. Its just a football game, you are supposed to watch the games for fun. If you aren't having fun watching the Bengals, which it seems like most of you aren't, just don't watch them. Just cause they lose doesn't mean its the end of the world. They play again next week. And if they lose, they play again. Get over yourselves, nobody cares how mad you are about the Bengals losing.

Mark, if you haven't read them already, check out the post game stories on the Seattle Times website.
One story talks of the Bengals receivers bragging post game on how they were able to run up and down the field on Seattle and the other talks of the humility of Seatte WR Nate Burleson compared to Ocho Cinco who spent time last week leaving braggart voice mails for each Seattle sports writer. Classy.

Half of Lewis's defense isn't playing, between the injuries and the DUIs. He is having a hard time keeping his backups in the game. And for everyone that talked badly about the Fraiser dumping and signing Jones, Look at how it worked out in the game. Fraiser wouldn't have done squat. Jones looked like a professional that should be playing.
One other point, special teams is made up out of linebackers and safties. Guys that can run and hit. With half of the linebackers injured and the other half being pulled off specail temas to play every down on defense. The Specail teams is going to be bad. Face reality, the Bengals have injuries, bad luck and guys suspended. All on a team that would be average if they were healthy and all playing. This defense and specail teams shoul;d be bad. They have plenty of realsions to be bad. The greatest coach of all time couldn't make these guys great. Give Lewis a break.

Jeff some people invest real time and money into this hobby called watching sports. Sometimes this hobby carries on for a lifetime. When "your team", as they say, repeatedly fails and things look bad, it tends to frustrate the fan. This is not such a foreign reaction and don't let it scare you away.
Furthermore, people come to this blog to share opinions. If you don't want to hear other peoples opinions, don't come here. I would say its getting to the point where many people will quit watching the Bengals, but it won't be because you reprimanded them for getting upset.
Lastly, if they lose their chances of getting to the PLAYOFFS, the goal of any season, is greatly reduced. Losses actually have consequences for those who enjoy the hobby of watching sports.
I hope this clarifies the situation for you.

The Bengals got screwed by the refs. Why was the Hasselbeck fumble not reviewable? I have looked at the replay several times and it's clear that the ball was moving before his knee hit the ground. With 2:01 left in the game and the Bengals having recovered the ball with the lead they would have won. Again the quetion is why was the play not reviewable and why aren't the refs held accountable? This clearly cost the Bengals a victory.

The answer some things before, as in the comment for who should be fired form the Bengals.
Marvin Lewis- He hugged the Seahawks coach, big friggin deal. ALL THE BLOODY COACHES DO THIS.

Chuck Breshnahan- … No comment.. He’s up against top rank offences.. Give him a freaking break, it’s not easy being a coach.

Special Teams Coach- Why? He’s our best in like…forever

Shayne Graham- He’s under pressure. He can’t help but kick it out of bounds. Look at other teams. He’s not the only one to kick a ball out of friggin bounds.

Holt- Fourth String? Wow, with what he does he doesn’t seem like a fricking fourth string receiver.

I’d love to see you play who they do. Now stop bashing them.
